Theoretical Study of Indium Compounds of Interest for Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition

The structural. electronic and therinochemical properties of indium compounds which are of interest in halide transport and organometallic chemical vapor deposition processes have been studied by ab initio and statistical mechanics methods. The compounds reported include: indium halides and hydrides (InF, InCl, InCl3, InH, InH2, InH3); indium clusters (In2, In3); methylindium, dimethylindium, and their hydrogen derivatives [In(CH3), In(CH3)H, In(CH3)H2, In(CH3)2, In(CH3)2H]; dimethyl-indium dimer [In2(CH3)4], trimethyl-indium [In(CH3)3]; dehydrogenated methyl, dimethyl and trimethylindium [In(CH3)2CH2, In(CH3)CH2, In(CH2)], trimethylindium adducts with ammonia, trimethylamine and hydrazine [(CH3)3In:NH3, (CH3)3In:N(CH3)3, (CH3)3In:N(H2)N(H2)]; dimethylamino-indium and methylimino-indium [In(CH3)2(NH2), In(CH3)(NH)]; indium nitride and indium nitride dimer (InN, In2N2), indium phosphide, arsenide and antimonide ([InP, InAs, InSb). The predicted electronic properties are based on density functional theory calculations; the calculated thermodynamic properties are reported following the format of the JANAF (Joint Army, Navy, NASA, Air Force) Tables. Equilibrium compositions at two temperatures (298 and 1000 K) have been analyzed for groups of competing simultaneous reactions.

A diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic study of adsorbed hydrazines

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy of fuel hydrazines adsorbed on silica, silica-alumina and alimina surfaces indicates that the primary surface-hydrazine interaction is hydrogen bonding. Hydrazine, on adsorption to a deuterated silica surface, undergoes a rapid H/D exchange with deuterated surface silanol (Si-OD) groups. Adsorption equilibria are rapidly established at room temperature. Monomethylhydrazine and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine are similarly adsorbed. On adsorption, the C-H stretching and methyl deformation modes of the methylhydrazines are shifted to higher frequencies by 10 to 20 cm(-1). These shifts are postulated to be due to changes in the lone-pair electro-density on the adjacent nitrogen atom and an electronegativity effect.

Kinetic Re-Evaluation of Fuel Neutralization by AKGA

Baseline characterization testing previously identified alpha-ketoglutaric acid (AKGA) cis a potential alternative to the current standard hydrazine (HZ) family fuel neutralization techniques in use at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Thus far, the reagent shows promise for use in hardware decontamination operations and as a drop-in replacement for the scrubber liquor currently used in KSC four tower vapor scrubbers. Implementation of AKGA could improve process safety and reduce or eliminate generation of hydrazine-Iaden waste streams. This paper focuses on evaluation of the kinetics of these decontamination reactions in solution. Pseudo first order reaction rate constants with respect to the pyridazine products (6-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyridazine-3-carboxylic acid, (PCA) and 1-methyl-6-oxo-4,5-dihydro-pyridazine-3-carboxylic acid (mPCA)) in the presence of excess AKGA were determined by monitoring product formation using a ultra-violet visible absorption spectroscopy method. The results are presented here in comparison to previous data obtained by monitoring reactant depletion by gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC-NPD).

Study of monopropellants for electrothermal thrusters. Evaluation test program task summary report

An electrothermal thruster designed for operation with MIL-grade hydrazine is suitable for operation with propellants having lower freezing points. These propellants are 76% hydrazine - 24% hydrazine azide, Aerozine-50, 50% hydrazine - 50% monomethylydrazine, and a TRW-formulated mixture of 35% hydrazine - 50% monomethylhydrane - 15% ammonia. A steady-state specific impulse of 200 sec was exceeded by all propellants. A pulse-mode value of 175 sec specific impulse was exceeded by the azide blend for pulse widths greater than 50 ms and was met by the carbonaceous propellants for pulse widths greater than 100 ms. Longer residence times were required for the carbonaceous propellants; the original thruster design was modified by increasing the characteristic chamber length and density of screen packing. A substantial amount of thermal energy must be supplied to initiate decomposition of propellants containing unsymmetrical-dimethylhydrazine and monomethylhydrazine. The rate controlling factor appeared to be the endothermic removal of methyl radicals.
