Interaction of magnetic fields with spinons in a fractionalized state

The 4d-electron trimer lattice Ba₄Nb₁₋ₓRu₃₊ₓO₁₂ exhibits either a quantum spin liquid (QSL) or a heavy-fermion strange metal (HFSM) phase, depending on Nb content. In the QSL state, itinerant spinons act as effective heat carriers, enhancing thermal conductivity. Strikingly, applying a magnetic field up to 14 T causes an abrupt, up-to-5000% increase in heat capacity below 150 mK, disrupting the linear temperature dependence typical of both phases. Meanwhile, AC susceptibility and electrical resistivity remain nearly unchanged, while thermal conductivity drops by up to 40% below 4 K. These results suggest spinons, despite being charge-neutral, are highly sensitive to magnetic fields at low temperatures. We propose that the magnetic field could induce Anderson localization of spinons, creating emergent non-magnetic two-level systems responsible for the Schottky-like anomaly in heat capacity. These findings point to a previously unexplored regime of spinon dynamics, potentially governed by field-induced localization and distinct from conventional magnetic or transport signatures.

Weak trimerization in the frustrated two-dimensional triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3

To understand the 2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system, we investigated the magnetic structures and the dynamics of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 in detail. The substitutions are adjusted to the Mn atomic position close to x Mn =$\frac{1}{3}$. The neutron powder diffraction data claims that the magnetic structure of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 is described as a mixture of Γ 3 (P6' 3 cm') and Γ 4 (P6' 3 c'm) at the x Mn position for y=0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. The ratio of Γ 3 and Γ 4 depends on temperature and composition and the fraction of Γ 3 increases upon cooling, while no clear trimerization was observed at the xMn position. We estimated exchange parameters from the analysis of the low-energy part of the spin waves. The results showed a weak trimerization effect on cooling because the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is slightly enhanced. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave dispersion around the Γ point shows that the spin gap closes with increasing temperature because the exchange interactions in the nearest Mn-Mn neighbor become smaller. Gapless diffusive magnetic excitation from a Mn triangular lattice has been observed in a wide range in Q and E space of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 . We found that Lu 0.3 Y 0.7 MnO 3 could be an ideal case to investigate the trimerization, frustrated magnetism, and magnetoelastic coupling often observed in two-dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet systems.

Direct observation of electric field-induced magnetism in a molecular magnet

Abstract We report the direct observation of an electrically-induced magnetic susceptibility in the molecular nano- magnet [Fe 3 O(O 2 CPh) 6 (py) 3 ]ClO 4 · py, an Fe 3 trimer. This magnetoelectric effect results from the breaking of spatial inversion symmetry due to the spin configurations of the antiferromagnetic trimer. Both static and very low frequency electric fields were used. Fractional changes of the magnetic susceptibility of 11 ppb $$\pm 2$$ ± 2 per kVm -1 for the temperature range 8 . 5 < T < 13 . 5 K were observed for applied electric fields up to 62 kV m − 1 . The changes in susceptibility were measured using a tunnel diode oscillator operating at liquid helium temperatures while the sample is held at a higher regulated temperature.

Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Data for Ba₃Zn(Ru₀.₁Sb₁.₉)O₉

This dataset contains inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the magnetically dilute compound Ba₃Zn(Ru₀.₁Sb₁.₉)O₉, collected at the Spallation Neutron Source using the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) and the SEQUOIA Fine-Resolution Fermi Chopper Spectrometer. The sample consists of nominally 5% magnetic Ru⁵⁺ ions (S = 3/2) randomly substituted into a diamagnetic Sb⁵⁺ matrix. Measurements were performed at base temperature (2–5 K) and 300 K using multiple incident energies (1.00, 3.32, 12.0, and 100 meV) to resolve magnetic excitations from isolated monomers and small Ru clusters (dimers, trimers, etc.). The dataset includes raw event-mode files, momentum- and energy-resolved spectra, and supporting metadata for instrument configuration, sample environment, and reduction parameters.

Magnetic order and spin liquid behavior in [Mo 3 ] 11+ molecular magnets

Molecular magnets based on [Mo 3 ] 11+ units with one unpaired electron per trimer have attracted recent interest due to the identification of quantum spin liquid candidacy in some family members. Here, we present comprehensive measurements on polycrystalline samples of ZnScMo 3 O 8 , MgScMo 3 O 8 , and Na 3 Sc 2 Mo 5 O 16 with the same Mo 3 O 13 magnetic building blocks. In this work, the crystal structures are characterized with x-ray or neutron powder diffraction and the magnetic ground states are determined by performing ac and dc susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Our work indicates that ZnScMo 3 O 8 and MgScMo 3 O 8 have ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperatures of 18.5 and 11.9 K, ordered ground states with net moments (low-moment ferromagnetism or canted antiferromagnetism), and zero field ordering temperatures of $T_c$ = 6 K and $T_c$ < 2 K, respectively. On the other hand, Na 3 Sc 2 Mo 5 O 16 hosts a dynamical magnetic ground state with no evidence for magnetic ordering or spin freezing down to 20 mK despite an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of –36.2 K, and therefore is a candidate for quantum spin liquid behavior. By comparing the present results to past work on the same family of materials, we construct a phase diagram which illustrates that the magnetic ground states of these Mo-based molecular magnets are very sensitive to small changes in the nearest-neighbor Mo-Mo distance.

Thermal hysteretic behavior and negative magnetoresistance in the charge density wave material EuTe 4

EuTe 4 is a van der Waals material exhibiting a charge density wave (CDW) with a large thermal hysteresis in the resistivity and CDW gap. In this paper, we systematically study the electronic structure and transport properties of EuTe 4 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), magnetoresistance (MR) measurements, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Here, we observe a CDW gap of ~ 200meV at low temperatures that persists up to 400 K, suggesting that the CDW transition occurs at a much higher temperature. The ARPES intensity near the Fermi level shows large thermal hysteretic behavior, consistent with the resistivity measurement. The hysteresis in the resistivity measurement does not change under a magnetic field up to 7 T, excluding the thermal magnetic hysteretic effect. Instead, the surface topography measured with STM shows surface domains with different CDW trimerization directions, which may be important for the thermal hysteretic behavior. Interestingly, we reveal a large negative MR at low temperatures that can be associated with the canting of magnetically ordered Eu spins. Our results shed light on the understanding of magnetic, transport, and electronic properties of EuTe 4 .

Visualizing symmetry-breaking electronic orders in epitaxial Kagome magnet FeSn films

Abstract Kagome lattice hosts a plethora of quantum states arising from the interplay of topology, spin-orbit coupling, and electron correlations. Here, we report symmetry-breaking electronic orders tunable by an applied magnetic field in a model Kagome magnet FeSn consisting of alternating stacks of two-dimensional Fe 3 Sn Kagome and Sn 2 honeycomb layers. On the Fe 3 Sn layer terminated FeSn thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO 3 (111) substrates, we observe trimerization of the Kagome lattice using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, breaking its six-fold rotational symmetry while preserving the translational symmetry. Such a trimerized Kagome lattice shows an energy-dependent contrast reversal in dI/dV maps, which is significantly enhanced by bound states induced by Sn vacancy defects. This trimerized Kagome lattice also exhibits stripe modulations that are energy-dependent and tunable by an applied in-plane magnetic field, indicating symmetry-breaking nematicity from the entangled magnetic and charge degrees of freedom in antiferromagnet FeSn.

Geometrical frustration and competing orders in the dipolar trimerized triangular lattice

Here, we introduce and explore low-energy configurations in two-dimensional arrays consisting of Ising-type dipolar coupled nanomagnets lithographically defined onto three-nanomagnet vertices arranged in a triangular coordination. Thus, the system is dubbed the trimerized triangular lattice. Employing synchrotron-based photoemission electron microscopy, we perform temperature-dependent magnetic imaging of moment configurations. These states are then characterized in terms of spin correlations and magnetic structure factors. The results reveal a competition between ferromagnetic and vortex dominated orders, which can be controlled by varying the relevant lattice parameter and the corresponding competing interactions.

Structural and magnetic transitions in the planar antiferromagnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

We report the structural and magnetic ground state properties of the monoclinic compound barium iridium oxide Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 using a combination of resonant x-ray scattering, magnetometry, and thermodynamic techniques. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits a pronounced antiferromagnetic transition at T N ≈ 25 K, a weaker anomaly at T S ≈ 142 K, and strong magnetic anisotropy at all temperatures. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a second order structural phase transition at T S and a magnetic transition at T N . Both structural and magnetic superlattice peaks are observed at L = half integer values. The magnetization anomaly at T S implies the presence of magnetoelastic coupling, which conceivably facilitates the symmetry lowering. Mean field critical scattering is observed above T S . The magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic ground state is discussed based on the measured magnetic superlattice peak intensity. Furthermore, our study not only presents essential information for understanding the intertwined structural and magnetic properties in Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 but also highlights the necessary ingredients for exploring novel ground states with octahedra trimers.

Fluctuating Ru trimer precursor to a two-stage electronic transition in RuP

Superconductivity in binary ruthenium pnictides occurs proximal to and upon suppression of a non-magnetic ground state, preceded by a pseudogap phase associated with Fermi surface instability, and its critical temperature, T c , is maximized around the pseudogap quantum critical point. By analogy with isoelectronic iron based counterparts, antiferromagnetic fluctuations became ''usual suspects" as putative mediators of superconducting pairing. Here we report on a high temperature local symmetry breaking in RuP, nonsuperconducting parent of the maximum- T c branch of these novel superconductors, revealed by combined nanostructure-sensitive powder and single crystal X-ray total scattering analyses. Large local distortions of Ru chains associated with orbital-charge trimerization, further assembled into hexamers, exist above the two-stage electronic transition in RuP. In the pseudogap regime the precursors order with distortions retaining their strength, whereas they acquire spin-singlet characteristics which dramatically enhances the distortion as the nonmagnetic ground state establishes. The precursors enable the nonmagnetic ground state and presumed complex oligomerization, and the relevance of pseudogap fluctuations for superconductivity emerges as a distinct prospect. As a transition metal system in which partial d-manifold filling combined with high crystal symmetry promotes electronic instabilities, this represents a further example of local electronic precursors underpinning the macroscopic collective behavior of quantum materials.

Short-range magnetic order and planar anisotropy in the topological ferrimagnet Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6

Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 is a ferrimagnetic topological nodal-line semiconductor that exhibits unconventional colossal magnetoresistance behavior, with short-range spin fluctuations being potentially intimately linked to the emergent properties. Here we determine the short-range magnetic order and anisotropy through total neutron scattering and polarized neutron powder diffraction measurements on polycrystalline Mn 3 ⁢Si 2⁢ Te 6 . Strong in-plane anisotropy is quantified on the Mn ions through extraction of the local site susceptibility tensor. Here, the real-space local spin structure is determined through the application of magnetic pair distribution function analysis covering a wide temperature range. Short-range order over a locally frustrated trimer of three nearest neighbors is found to exist well above the long-range ferrimagnetic transition.

Electronic structure and magnetic tendencies of trilayer La 4 Ni 3 O 10 under pressure: Structural transition, molecular orbitals, and layer differentiation

Motivated by the recent observation of superconductivity in the pressurized trilayer Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelate La 4 Ni 3 O 10 , we explore its structural, electronic, and magnetic properties as a function of hydrostatic pressure from first-principles calculations. We find that an orthorhombic (monoclinic)-to-tetragonal transition under pressure takes place concomitantly with the onset of superconductivity. The electronic structure of La 4 Ni 3 O 10 can be understood using a molecular trimer basis wherein n molecular subbands arise as the d z 2 orbitals hybridize strongly along the c axis within the trilayer. The magnetic tendencies indicate that the ground state at ambient pressure is formed by nonmagnetic inner planes and stripe-ordered outer planes that are antiferromagnetically coupled along the c axis, resulting in an unusual ↑, 0, ↓ stacking that is consistent with the spin density wave model previously suggested by neutron diffraction. Such a state is destabilized at the pressure where superconductivity arises. Despite the presence of d z 2 states at the Fermi level, the d x 2 –y 2 orbitals also play a key role in the electronic structure of La4Ni3O10. Finally, this active role of the d x 2 –y 2 states in the low-energy physics of the trilayer RP nickelate, together with the distinct electronic behavior of the inner and outer planes, resembles the physics of multilayer cuprates.

Structure-Spin-Transport Anomaly in Quasi-One-Dimensional Ba9Fe3Te15 under High Pressure

Recently, a series of novel compounds Ba3MX5 (M= Fe, Ti, V; X=Se, Te) with hexagonal crystal structures composed of quasi-1-dimensional (1D) magnetic chains has been synthesized by our research team using high-pressure and high-temperature methods. The initial hexagonal phases persist to the maximum achievable pressure, while spin configurations and magnetic interactions may change dramatically as a result of considerable reductions in interchain separations upon pressurization. These compounds therefore offer unique possibilities for studying the evolution of intrinsic electronic structures in quasi-1D magnetic systems. Here we present a systematic investigation of Ba9Fe3Te15, in which the interchain separations between trimerized 1D chains (~10.2 Å) can be effectively modulated by external high pressure. The crystal structure especially along the 1D chains exhibits an abnormal expansion at ~5GPa, which accompanies trimerization entangled anomalous mixed-high-low spin transition. An insulator-metal transition has been observed under high pressure as a result of charge-transfer gap closing. Pressure-induced superconductivity emerges at 26GPa, where the charge-transfer gap fully closes, 3D electronic configuration forms and local spin fully collapses.

Role of magnetic and structural symmetry breaking in forming the Mott insulating gap in Nb 3 ⁢Cl 8

The α-phase of the gapped insulator Nb 3 Cl 8 has recently emerged as the long-sought critical testing bed for examining the importance of strong interelectronic correlation vs symmetry breaking in understanding insulation of such Mott compounds. Structural symmetry breaking detected by density functional theory (DFT) energy lowering (such as dimer formation, disproportionation, or Jahn-Teller distortions) explains insulation in both d-electron Mott-like systems and in non-d-electron cases without recourse to strong correlation. Yet, in Nb 3 Cl 8 , structural symmetry breaking alone (viz. formation of Nb trimers) fails to explain insulation, leading instead to a partially occupied metallic flat band, in contrast with experimental observations. We examine the role of magnetic symmetry breaking, noting that Nb 3 Cl 8 is an observed paramagnet (not an antiferromagnet), thus potentially carrying also short-range ordered magnetic moments. Describing the latter as a polymorphous distribution of nonzero local moments with total zero net magnetization is demonstrated to lower the DFT total energy, while gapping the system without recourse to strong correlation or long-range magnetic order. This suggests that degeneracy removal by symmetry breaking in mean-field-like approaches—either structural, or magnetic, or both—can reduce or eliminate the need for strong correlation, allowing the use of DFT for such Mott systems.

The Structure of Liquid and Glassy Carbamazepine

To enhance the solubility of orally administered pharmaceuticals, liquid capsules or amorphous tablets are often preferred over crystalline drug products. However, little is known regarding the variation in bonding mechanisms between pharmaceutical molecules in their different disordered forms. In this study, liquid and melt-quenched glassy carbamazepine have been studied using high energy X-ray diffraction and modeled using Empirical Potential Structure Refinement. The results show significant structural differences between the liquid and glassy states. The liquid shows a wide range of structures; from isolated molecules, to aromatic ring correlations and NH-O hydrogen bonding. Upon quenching from the liquid to the glass the number of hydrogen bonds per molecule increases by ~50% at the expense of a ~30% decrease in the close contact (non-bonded) carbon-carbon interactions between aromatic rings. During the cooling process, there is an increase in both singly and doubly hydrogen-bonded adjacent molecules. Although hydrogen-bonded dimers found in the crystalline states persist in the glassy state, the absence of a crystalline lattice also allows small, hydrogen-bonded NH-O trimers and tetramers to form. This proposed model for the structure of glassy carbamazepine is consistent with the results from vibrational spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance.

IrGe 4 : A Predicted Weyl-Metal with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Polycrystalline IrGe4 was synthesized by annealing elements at 800 °C for 240 h, and the composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. IrGe 4 adopts a chiral crystal structure (space group P3 1 21) instead of a polar crystal structure (P3 1 ), which was corroborated by the convergent-beam electron diffraction and Rietveld refinements using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure features layers of IrGe 8 polyhedra along the b axis, and the layers are connected by edge- and corner-sharing. Each layer consists of corner-shared [Ir 3 Ge 20 ] trimers, which are formed by three IrGe 8 polyhedra connected by edge-sharing. Temperature-dependent resistivity indicates metallic behavior. The magnetoresistance increases with increasing applied magnetic field, and the nonsaturating magnetoresistance reaches 11.5% at 9 T and 10 K. The Hall resistivity suggests that holes are the majority carrier type, with a carrier concentration of 4.02 × 10 21 cm –3 at 300 K. In conclusion, electronic band structures calculated by density functional theory reveal a Weyl point with a chiral charge of +3 above the Fermi level.
