System and method for multi-channel pyrometer allowing non-contact temperature measurements down to 800 K on the microsecond scale

The present disclosure relates to a system for sensing temperature changes on a microsecond scale. The system uses a multi-channel pyrometer that works in the NIR spectrum to receive thermal radiation. Each channel includes an interference filter tuned to pass thermal radiation within a specified wavelength range, and a detector. Each detector detects thermal radiation focused on it. Each channel further includes an interference filter which reflects thermal radiation which does not pass through it to a subsequent downstream interference filter of a subsequent channel. Each subsequent interference filter is oriented to reflect the thermal radiation not passing through it to a next downstream one of the subsequent interference filters. A subsystem is included for receiving the output from the detectors and determining sensed temperature data therefrom, allowing measurement of temperatures down to 800 K.

Uncovering Uranium Isotopic Heterogeneity of Fuel Pellets from the Fifth Collaborative Materials Exercise of the Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group

In 2017, the Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group (ITWG) organized their fifth 37 Collaborative Materials Exercise (CMX-5). The exercise samples were two uranium dioxide fuel pellets 38 manufactured from the same starting materials by different processes to have similar bulk isotopic 39 composition, but different spatial uranium isotopic distributions. Sets of identical materials were sent to 40 all participating laboratories, who then utilized their existing nuclear forensic capabilities to 41 independently analyse fuel pellets and identify similarities and differences of the materials’ 42 characteristics. The analytical methods used to probe the fuel pellets included ex situ, such as sectioning 43 or breaking up the pellets and analyzing dissolved pieces using inductively coupled plasma mass 44 spectrometry (ICP-MS), analyzing particles collected from intact or fragmented pellets by secondary ion 45 mass spectrometry (SIMS), as well as in situ methods, such as laser ablation coupled with ICP-MS, 46 autoradiography and nanoSIMS. In this paper we present the results of these independent analyses and 47 compare the capabilities of those nuclear forensic analytical methods to uncover details of the isotopic 48 heterogeneity of uranium fuel pellets.

Design and Operation of Energy Systems with Large Amounts of Variable Generation: IEA Wind TCP Task 25 (Final Summary Report)

This report summarizes findings on wind integration from the 17 countries or sponsors participating in the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Program (IEA Wind TCP) Task 25 from 2006-2020. Both real experience and studies are reported. Many wind integration studies incorporate solar energy, and most of the results discussed here are valid for other variable renewables in addition to wind. The national case studies address several impacts of wind power on electric power systems. In this report, they are grouped under long-term planning issues and short-term operational impacts. Long-term planning issues include grid planning and capacity adequacy. Short-term operational impacts include reliability, stability, reserves, and maximizing the value of wind in operational timescales (balancing related issues). The first section presents the variability and uncertainty of power system-wide wind power, and the last section presents recent studies toward 100% shares of renewables. The appendix provides a summary of ongoing research in the national projects contributing to Task 25 for 2021-2024. The design and operation of power and energy systems is an evolving field. As ambitious targets toward net-zero carbon energy systems are announced globally, many scenarios are being made regarding how to reach these future decarbonized energy systems, most of them involving large amounts of variable renewables, mainly wind and solar energy. The secure operation of power systems is increasingly challenging, and the impacts of variable renewables, new electrification loads together with increased distribution system resources will lead to somewhat different challenges for different systems. Tools and methods to study future power and energy systems also need to evolve, and both short-term operational aspects (such as power system stability) and long-term aspects (such as resource adequacy) will probably see new paradigms of operation and design. The experience of operating and planning systems with large amounts of variable generation is accumulating, and research to tackle the challenges of inverter-based, nonsynchronous generation is on the way. Energy transition and digitalization also bring new flexibility opportunities, both short and long term.

Investigation of oxygen evolution reaction with Ni foam and stainless-steel mesh electrodes in alkaline seawater electrolysis

We report alkaline seawater electrolysis is a promising method for hydrogen production; however, little progress has been made in investigating the substrates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Ni foam and stainless-steel mesh (SS mesh) were investigated systematically for OER in alkaline seawater electrolysis in this work. The overpotentials and Tafel slopes with SS meshes are smaller than Ni foams, and it also exhibits excellent stability. Interestingly, the performance of the SS mesh even outperforms various non-noble metal electrocatalysts and is comparable to commercial RuO2 and IrO2. The corrosion conditions of Ni foam and SS mesh electrodes were studied and revealed. Furthermore, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Ni foam is 12 times higher than SS mesh in the same geometric area, indicating the electrochemical activity of SS mesh is much superior to Ni foam. This work expands on promising substrates for alkaline seawater electrolysis, with cost and performance advantages.

Critical Assessment of MetaProteome Investigation (CAMPI): a multi-laboratory comparison of established workflows

Metaproteomics has matured into a powerful tool to assess functional interactions in microbial communities. While many metaproteomic workflows are available, the impact of method choice on results remains unclear. Here, we carry out a community-driven, multi-laboratory comparison in metaproteomics: the critical assessment of metaproteome investigation study (CAMPI). Based on well-established workflows, we evaluate the effect of sample preparation, mass spectrometry, and bioinformatic analysis using two samples: a simplified, laboratory-assembled human intestinal model and a human fecal sample. We observe that variability at the peptide level is predominantly due to sample processing workflows, with a smaller contribution of bioinformatic pipelines. These peptide-level differences largely disappear at the protein group level. While differences are observed for predicted community composition, similar functional profiles are obtained across workflows. CAMPI demonstrates the robustness of present-day metaproteomics research, serves as a template for multi-laboratory studies in metaproteomics, and provides publicly available data sets for benchmarking future developments.

Sweden surpasses the UNAIDS 95-95-95 target: estimating HIV-1 incidence, 2003 to 2022

Background: Sweden reached the UNAIDS 90–90–90 target in 2015. It is important to reassess the HIV epi- demiological situation due to ever-changing migration patterns, the roll-out of PrEP and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim: We aimed to assess the pro- gress towards the UNAIDS 95–95–95 targets in Sweden by estimating the proportion of undiagnosed people with HIV (PWHIV) and HIV incidence trends. Methods: We used routine laboratory data to inform a biomarker model of time since infection. When available, we used previous negative test dates, arrival dates for PWHIV from abroad and transmission modes to inform our incidence model. We also used data collected from the Swedish InfCareHIV register on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Results: The yearly incidence of HIV in Sweden decreased after 2014. In part, this was because the fraction of undiagnosed PWHIV had decreased almost twofold since 2006. After 2015, three of four PWHIV in Sweden were diagnosed within 1.9 and 3.2 years after infection among men who have sex with men and in heterosexual groups, respectively. While 80% of new PWHIV in Sweden acquired HIV before immigration, they make up 50% of the current PWHIV in Sweden. By 2022, 96% of all PWHIV in Sweden had been diag- nosed, and 99% of them were on ART, with 98% virally suppressed. Conclusions: By 2022, about half of all PWHIV in Sweden acquired HIV abroad. Using our new biomarker model, we assess that Sweden has reached the UNAIDS goal at 96–99–98.

RNA-Puzzles Round V: blind predictions of 23 RNA structures

RNA-Puzzles is a collective endeavor dedicated to the advancement and improvement of RNA three-dimensional structure prediction. With agreement from structural biologists, RNA structures are predicted by modeling groups before publication of the experimental structures. We report a large-scale set of predictions by 18 groups for 23 RNA-Puzzles: 4 RNA elements, 2 Aptamers, 4 Viral elements, 5 Ribozymes and 8 Riboswitches. We describe automatic assessment protocols for comparisons between prediction and experiment. Our analyses reveal some critical steps to be overcome to achieve good accuracy in modeling RNA structures: identification of helix-forming pairs and of non-Watson–Crick modules, correct coaxial stacking between helices and avoidance of entanglements. Three of the top four modeling groups in this round also ranked among the top four in the CASP15 contest.

Migration of Ga vacancies and interstitials in β – Ga 2 O 3

Pathways and energy barriers for the migration of Ga vacancies (V Ga ) and Ga interstitials (Ga i ) in β–Ga 2 O 3 are explored using hybrid functional calculations and the nudged elastic band method. Considering β–Ga 2 O 3 as primarily being an n-type semiconductor, we focus on defect charge states relevant under such conditions: $V^{3 –}_{Ga}$, Ga$^{3+}_{i}$, and Ga$^{+}_{i}$. Notably, we describe a mechanism by which V Ga can transform between its different split configurations. In all cases, the intermediate state consists of a vacancy split between three Ga sites—a three-split vacancy—which enables passage over a significantly lower energy barrier. This is because it avoids the unfavorable simple vacancy at the tetrahedral Ga site. The proposed mechanism lowers the overall barrier for $V^{3–}_{Ga}$ diffusion along the [001] crystal direction from 1.73 to 0.97 eV, whereas the 2.08 eV barrier for the [100] and [010] directions is unaffected. For Ga$^{3+}_{i}$, we obtain similar overall migration barriers of 0.72, 0.80, and 1.02 eV for the [010], [001], and [100] directions, respectively. Ga$^{+}_{i}$ exhibits a strong preference for diffusion within the large eight-sided channel; the overall migration barrier is 0.92 eV for the [010] direction, and 2.16 eV for the [001] and [100] directions. The limiting step for the two latter directions involves ionization of Ga$^{+}_{i}$ followed by a jump to an adjacent large eight-sided channel as Ga$^{3+}_{i}$. Finally, our results are discussed in light of experimental observations of thermally activated recovery processes in irradiated material.

Targeted alpha therapy in a systemic mouse model of prostate cancer - a feasibility study

225 Ac-PSMA-617 targeted-therapy has demonstrated efficacy in 75-85% of patients; however, responses are not durable. We aimed to establish translatable mouse models of disseminated prostate cancer (PCa) to evaluate effectiveness of 225 Ac-PSMA-617 at various disease stages. Methods: C4-2, C4-2B, or 22Rv1 cells were injected into the left ventricle of male NSG mice. Disease progression was monitored using bioluminescence imaging (BLI). For treatment, mice were injected with 40 kBq 225 Ac-PSMA-617 at one (early treatment cohort) or three weeks (late treatment cohort) post-inoculation. Treatment efficacy was monitored by BLI of whole-body tumor burden. Mice were sacrificed based on body conditioning score. Results: C4-2 cells yielded metastases in liver, lungs, spleen, stomach, bones, and brain - achieving a clinically relevant model of widespread metastatic disease. The disease burden in the early treatment cohort was stable over 27 weeks in 5/9 mice and progressive in 4/9 mice. These mice were sacrificed due to brain metastases. Median survival of the late treatment cohort was superior to controls (13 vs. 7 weeks; p<0.0001) but inferior to that in the early treatment cohort (13 vs. 27 weeks; p<0.001). Late cohort mice succumbed to extensive liver involvement. The 22Rv1 and C4-2B systemic models were not used for treatment due to high kidney metastatic burden or low take rate, respectively. Conclusion: C4-2 cells reproduced metastatic cancer spread most relevantly. Early treatment with 225 Ac-PSMA-617 prevented liver metastases and led to significant survival benefit. Late treatment improved survival without reducing tumor burden in the liver, the main site of metastasis. The current findings suggest that early 225 Ac-PSMA-617 intervention is more efficacious in the setting of widespread metastatic PCa.
