Intermediate memory devices

Several methods of transfer and processing of data whose practical implementation requires operational memory devices are described. Devices incorporating multistable elements are proposed and their main parameters are given. The possibility of using the proposed devices for storing information for transmission in space radio communications channels is examined.

Measurement of irregularities in angular velocities of rotating assemblies in memory devices on magnetic carriers

Problems in measurement of irregularities in angular velocity of rotating assemblies in memory devices with rigid and flexible magnetic data carriers are discussed. A device and method for determination of change in angular velocities in various frequency and rotation rate ranges are examined. A schematic diagram of a photoelectric sensor for recording the signal pulses is provided. Mathematical models are developed to show the amount of error which can result from misalignment of the test equipment.

Comparison of single event upset rates for microelectronic memory devices during interplanetary solar particle events

Variability in the methods and models used for single event upset calculations in microelectronic memory devices can lead to a range of possible upset rates. Using heavy ion and proton data for selected DRAM and SRAM memories, we have calculated an array of upset rates in order to compare the Adams worst case interplanetary solar flare model to a model proposed by scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition, methods of upset rate calculation are compared: the Cosmic Ray Effects on Microelectronics CREME code and a Monte Carlo algorithm developed at the Applied Physics Laboratory. The results show that use of a more realistic, although still conservative, model of the space environment can have significant cost saving benefits.

Open coil structure for bubble-memory-device packaging

Concept has several important advantages over close-wound system: memory and coil chips are separate and interchangeable; interconnections in coil level are eliminated by packing memory chip and electronics in single structure; and coil size can be adjusted to optimum value in terms of power dissipation and field uniformity.

Fast, Capacious Disk Memory Device

Device for recording digital data on, and playing back data from, memory disks has high recording or playback rate and utilizes available recording area more fully. Two disks, each with own reading/writing head, used to record data at same time. Head on disk A operates on one of tracks numbered from outside in; head on disk B operates on track of same number in sequence from inside out. Underlying concept of device applicable to magnetic or optical disks.

Controlling reversible phase transitions in rare-earth nickelates for novel memory devices

Resistive switching in correlated complex oxides is lucrative for emerging applications in neuromorphic computing, and densely scaled non-volatile memory. Electrical conductance of such complex oxides can be controllable switched across multiple orders of magnitude by either (a) electroforming a conduction channel (e.g., in tungsten oxide), or (b) inducing Mott-Hubbard transition (e.g., in rare-earth nickelates)– both via controlled migration of defects (such as oxygen vacancies) under applied bias. Nevertheless, the promise of such defect-driven electronic transitions are far from realized due to a lack of fundamental understanding of the atomic-scale processes that underlie migration and spatiotemporal evolution of oxygen vacancies over nano-to-mesoscopic length/timescales under applied electric field. In this project, we employ a synergistic integration of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, ab initio/classical molecular dynamics (AIMD/CMD) simulations, machine learning (ML), precision synthesis, and multi-modal X-ray imaging experiments to address this knowledge gap. Such an integrated approach offers to elucidate the correlations between subtle structural distortion and oxidation states; treat localized charge carriers; describe defect/ion transport in the presence of electric field; and, in turn, greatly advance the current understanding of microstructural evolution in complex oxides under applied bias. The fundamental knowledge gained from this work will enable precise control over hierarchical defect structures and unravel new routes to manipulate resistance states in complex oxides. This, in turn, will accelerate design of novel devices with desired set of neural functionalities, and high-speed densely-scaled resistive random access memory technologies.

Investigation of fluctuations in angular velocity in magnetic memory devices

The fluctuations in the angular velocity of individual assemblies of a precision mechanical system were analyzed. The system was composed of an electric motor and a magnetic drum which were connected by a flexible coupling. A dynamic model was constructed which took into account the absence of torsion in the rigid shafts of the electric motor drive rotor and the magnetic drum. The motion was described by Lagrange differential equations of the second kind. Curves are developed to show the nature of amplitude fluctuation of the magnetic drum angular velocity at a specific excitation frequency. Additional curves show the amplitudes of fluctuation of the magnetic drum angular velocity compared to the quantity of damping at specific frequencies.

High-performance ultra-low power VLSI analog processor for data compression

An apparatus for data compression employing a parallel analog processor. The apparatus includes an array of processor cells with N columns and M rows wherein the processor cells have an input device, memory device, and processor device. The input device is used for inputting a series of input vectors. Each input vector is simultaneously input into each column of the array of processor cells in a pre-determined sequential order. An input vector is made up of M components, ones of which are input into ones of M processor cells making up a column of the array. The memory device is used for providing ones of M components of a codebook vector to ones of the processor cells making up a column of the array. A different codebook vector is provided to each of the N columns of the array. The processor device is used for simultaneously comparing the components of each input vector to corresponding components of each codebook vector, and for outputting a signal representative of the closeness between the compared vector components. A combination device is used to combine the signal output from each processor cell in each column of the array and to output a combined signal. A closeness determination device is then used for determining which codebook vector is closest to an input vector from the combined signals, and for outputting a codebook vector index indicating which of the N codebook vectors was the closest to each input vector input into the array.

A Novel 3D DRAM Memory Cube Architecture for Space Applications

The first mainstream products in 3D IC design are memory devices where multiple memory tiers are horizontally integrated to offer manifold improvements compared with their 2D counterparts. Unfortunately, none of these existing 3D memory cubes are ready for harsh space environments. This paper presents a new memory cube architecture for space, based on vertical integration of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS), 3D stacked, DRAM memory devices with a custom Radiation-Hardened-By-Design (RHBD) controller offering high memory capacity, robust reliability and low latency.Validation and evaluation of the ASIC controller will be conducted prior to tape-out on a custom FPGA-based emulator platform integrating the 3D-stack.
