Electroencephalographic changes in albino rats subjected to stress

Twenty one albino Wistar rats were subjected to stress for 7 hours. There was a significant difference in the slopes of regression lines for 7 nonulcerous rats and those for 14 ulcerous rats. Nonulcerous rats subjected to stress showed greater EEG curve synchronization than did ulcerous rats. If curve synchronization can be equated to a relaxed state, it may therefore be possible to explain the protective action of hypnotics, tranquilizers and analgesics on ulcers.

Highly separated transonic flows

Attention is given to the wind tunnel, to photographic visualization of the flow, and to measurements by pressure probes, hot wire anemometry and laser anemometry. The simultaneous use of different means of measurement provided a good description of the phenomenon, and indicated the existence of shocks and their stability, as well as the existence of the bubble, its dimensions, and in particular, the reattachment of its front. The results show that the bursting (or transition) of the bubble front is produced at an unstable position and creates a point of turbulent intensity which diffuses over the entire height of the flow.

Determining the general circulation of the ocean - A nonlinear inverse problem

The usual inversion procedures for determining the oceanic circulation take the density field as given. This does not explicitly account for the mismatch between the data (which are typically a single realization of the density field) and the circulation being estimated (which may be a time mean or some other smoothed quantity), but explicit consideration of the uncertainty of the density data renders the problem nonlinear, and new estimation methods have to be used. As an example, a nonlinear inversion is successfully applied here to the simple analytical model of Stommel and Veronis (1981). It is also shown that their linear procedure, if properly used, yields a much better result than they obtained.

NASA standard GAS Can satellite

The Get-Away Special canister (GAS Can) satellite is a small, (150 lb) low-cost satellite making it possible for commercial and scientific institutions to conduct experiments in space on an economical and short-term basis. The current model is called Xsat (Exceptional Satellite) and is designed to be launched from a GAS canister on the STS Orbiter; also provided is a low-cost automated PC-operated ground station for commercial, scientific, and government users. The Xsat structure is diagrammed, and details such as payload interface, weight restrictions, and structural loads are described in detail, pointing out that Xsat has a maximum payload weight of 50 lbs, and has a natural vibration frequency of around 45 Hz, with a minimum requiremet of 35 Hz. Thermal designs, power system, electronics, computer design and bus system, and satellite operations are all outlined.

General circulation of the South Atlantic between 5 deg N and 35 deg S

The TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter will provide the temporal mean seal level. So, secondly, we propose to compute the difference between these two surfaces (mean sea level minus general circulation dynamic topography). The result will be an estimate of the marine geoid, which is time invariant for the 5-year period under consideration. If this geoid is precise enough, it will permit a description of seasonal variability of the large-scale surface circulation. If there happens to be enough float data, it may be possible to infer the first vertical modes of this variability. Thus the main goal of our investigation is to determine the 3-D general circulation of the South Atlantic and the large-scale seasonal fluctuations. This last objective, however, may be restricted to the western part of the South Atlantic because float deployments have been scheduled only in the Brasil basin.

Next Generation Flight Controller Trainer System

The Next Generation Flight Controller Trainer (NGFCT) is a relatively inexpensive system of hardware and software that provides high-fidelity training for spaceshuttle flight controllers. NGFCT provides simulations into which are integrated the behaviors of emulated space-shuttle vehicle onboard general-purpose computers (GPCs), mission-control center (MCC) displays, and space-shuttle systems as represented by high-fidelity shuttle mission simulator (SMS) mathematical models. The emulated GPC computers enable the execution of onboard binary flight-specific software. The SMS models include representations of system malfunctions that can be easily invoked. The NGFCT software has a flexible design that enables independent updating of its GPC, SMS, and MCC components.

The Solar Orbiter SPICE Instrument An Extreme UV imaging spectrometer

Aims. The Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) instrument is a high-resolution imaging spectrometer operating at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. In this paper, we present the concept, design, and pre-launch performance of this facility instrument on the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission. Methods. The goal of this paper is to give prospective users a better understanding of the possible types of observations, the data acquisition, and the sources that contribute to the instrument’s signal. Results. The paper discusses the science objectives, with a focus on the SPICE-specific aspects, before presenting the instrument’s design, including optical, mechanical, thermal, and electronics aspects. This is followed by a characterisation and calibration of the instrument’s performance. The paper concludes with descriptions of the operations concept and data processing. Conclusions. The performance measurements of the various instrument parameters meet the requirements derived from the mission’s science objectives. The SPICE instrument is ready to perform measurements that will provide vital contributions to the scientific success of the Solar Orbiter mission.

PERLE: A novel facility for ERL development and applications in multi-turn configuration and high-power regime

The development of ERLs has been recognized as one of the five main pillars of accelerators R&D in support of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP). The international panel in charge of the ERL Roadmap definition recognized PERLE project as “a central part of the roadmap for the development of energy-recovery linacs”, with milestones to be achieved by the next ESPP in 2026. PERLE project is aiming at the construction of a novel ERL facility for the development and application of the energy recovery technique in multi-turn configuration, high current and large energy regime. It will operate in a 3-turns mode, first at 250 MeV, then upgraded to 500 MeV with 20mA beam current. Such challenging parameters make PERLE a unique multi-turn ERL facility operating at an unexplored operational power regime (10MW), studying and validating a broad range of accelerator phenomena, paving the way for the future larger scale ERLs. PERLE will be the necessary demonstrator for the future HEP machine (LHeC / FCC-eh), with which it shares the same technological choices and beam parameters. Furthermore, PERLE opens a new frontier for the physics of “the electromagnetic probe”. It will be the first ERL dedicated to Nuclear Physics for studying the eN interaction with radioactive nuclei. Here we will report on the project status, introduce the main ongoing achievements and describe the staged strategy we will adopt toward the construction of PERLE machine at its nominal performances.
