Post-Landing Major Element Quantification Using SuperCam Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

The SuperCam instrument on the PerseveranceMars 2020 rover uses a pulsed 1064 nm laser to ablate targets at a distance and conduct laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) by analyzing the light from the resulting plasma. SuperCam LIBS spectra are preprocessed to remove ambient light, noise, and the continuum signal present in LIBS observations. Prior to quantification, spectra are masked to remove noisier spectrometer regions andspectra are normalized to minimize signal fluctuations and effectsof target distance. In some cases, the spectra are also standardized or binned prior to quantification. To determine quantitative elemental compositionsof diverse geologic materials at Jezero crater, Mars, we use a suite of 1198 laboratory spectra of 334 well-characterized reference samples. The samples were selected to span a wide range of compositions and include typical silicate rocks, pure minerals (e.g.,silicates, sulfates, carbonates, oxides),more unusual compositions (e.g.,Mn oreand sodalite), andreplicates of the sintered SuperCam calibration targets (SCCTs) onboardthe rover. For each major element (SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, FeOT, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O), the database was subdivided into five“folds” with similar distributions of the element of interest. One fold was held out as an independent test set, and the remaining fourfolds were used to optimize multivariate regression models relating the spectrum to the composition. We considered a variety of models, and selected several for further investigation for each element, based primarily on the root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) on the test set, when analyzed at 3m. In cases with several models of comparable performance at 3 m, we incorporated the SCCT performance at different distances to choose the preferred model. Shortly after landing on Mars and collecting initial spectra of geologic targets, we selected one model per element. Subsequently, with additional data from geologic targets, some models were revised to ensure results that are more consistent with geochemical constraints. The calibration discussed here is a snapshot of an ongoing effort to deliver the most accurate chemical compositions with SuperCam LIBS.

l1-optimal control of multivariable systems with output norm constraints

This paper considers the l1-optimal control problem for general rational plants. It is shown that, for plants with no poles or zeros on the unit circle, an optimal compensator exists and that the resulting closed loop transfer function is polynomial whenever there are at least as many controls as regulated outputs and at least as many measurements as exogeneous inputs. Exactly or approximately, optimal rational compensators can be obtained by solving a sequence of finite linear programs for the coefficients of a polynomial closed-loop transfer function. No assumptions on plant poles or zeros are required to obtain at least approximately optimal compensators. It is shown that constrained problems in which a set of outputs is regulated subject to l(infinity)-norm constraints on another set of outputs can be solved using a slight modification of the same algorithm.

Robust integrated autopilot/autothrottle design using constrained parameter optimization

A multivariable control design method based on constrained parameter optimization was applied to the design of a multiloop aircraft flight control system. Specifically, the design method is applied to the following: (1) direct synthesis of a multivariable 'inner-loop' feedback control system based on total energy control principles; (2) synthesis of speed/altitude-hold designs as 'outer-loop' feedback/feedforward control systems around the above inner loop; and (3) direct synthesis of a combined 'inner-loop' and 'outer-loop' multivariable control system. The design procedure offers a direct and structured approach for the determination of a set of controller gains that meet design specifications in closed-loop stability, command tracking performance, disturbance rejection, and limits on control activities. The presented approach may be applied to a broader class of multiloop flight control systems. Direct tradeoffs between many real design goals are rendered systematic by this method following careful problem formulation of the design objectives and constraints. Performance characteristics of the optimization design were improved over the current autopilot design on the B737-100 Transport Research Vehicle (TSRV) at the landing approach and cruise flight conditions; particularly in the areas of closed-loop damping, command responses, and control activity in the presence of turbulence.

Guaranteed robustness properties of multivariable, nonlinear, stochastic optimal regulators

The robustness of optimal regulators for nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic, multi-input dynamical systems is studied under the assumption that all state variables can be measured. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, such nonlinear regulators have a guaranteed infinite gain margin; moreover, they have a guaranteed 50 percent gain reduction margin and a 60 degree phase margin, in each feedback channel, provided that the system is linear in the control and the penalty to the control is quadratic, thus extending the well-known properties of LQ regulators to nonlinear optimal designs. These results are also valid for infinite horizon, average cost, stochastic optimal control problems.

Structural reliability and robustness properties of optimal linear-quadratic multivariable regulators

Strong sufficient conditions are derived for the robustness of optimal linear-quadratic (LQ) regulators to large parameter perturbations. In particular, it is shown that under certain conditions LQ designs remain stable in the presence of actuator channel failures. The general results can be specialized to provide insight into the gain margin, gain reduction, and phase margin properties of optimal LQ regulators.

Optimal uniform-damping ratio controller for sequential design of multivariable systems

An optimal uniform-damping ratio controller is developed for the sequential design of a multivariable control system so that the designed closed-loop poles of the respective multivariable system and reduced-order observer are exactly placed on the negative real axis and/or the boundaries of desired sectors with constant-damping ratios. The functions in the quadratic performance index to be minimized are chosen as a combination of the weighted outputs, reduced states and inputs. Also, the optimal uniform-damping ratio controller is a combination of optimal output-feedback and optimal reduced-order state-feedback controllers. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the design procedure.

Application of multivariable search techniques to the optimization of airfoils in a low speed nonlinear inviscid flow field

Multivariable search techniques are applied to a particular class of airfoil optimization problems. These are the maximization of lift and the minimization of disturbance pressure magnitude in an inviscid nonlinear flow field. A variety of multivariable search techniques contained in an existing nonlinear optimization code, AESOP, are applied to this design problem. These techniques include elementary single parameter perturbation methods, organized search such as steepest-descent, quadratic, and Davidon methods, randomized procedures, and a generalized search acceleration technique. Airfoil design variables are seven in number and define perturbations to the profile of an existing NACA airfoil. The relative efficiency of the techniques are compared. It is shown that elementary one parameter at a time and random techniques compare favorably with organized searches in the class of problems considered. It is also shown that significant reductions in disturbance pressure magnitude can be made while retaining reasonable lift coefficient values at low free stream Mach numbers.

Multivariate Parameter Sets for Optimal Synthesis of Compliant Mechanisms

This paper will propose the use of control maps along with discretized elements or meshes in the design parameter set for optimizing compliant mechanisms. The use of control maps will be demonstrated to encode the motion of groups of nodes or control points within a compliant mechanism design with simple mapping rules. The technique will serve as an alternative to increased mesh size or node wandering techniques that have been proposed to increase the number of alternative design shapes that may be considered. As an alternative approach, the proposed control map parameterization has the significant benefit that it minimizes the number of design parameters necessary (parameters increase linearly with the mesh size) in describing a given design making it computationally efficient. A limited number of tiles can produce a map that has a significant effect on the final shape. If the tiles are chosen appropriately, the problems such as material overlap and non-convex mesh elements are avoided automatically. This paper will describe the implementation of these control maps and provide several examples showing their implementation in the compliant mechanism topology synthesis process.

Optimization of Air-Breathing Propulsion Engine Concepts

Air-breathing propulsion engines play an important role in the development of both civil and military aircraft Design optimization of such engines can lead to higher power, or more thrust for less fuel consumption. A multimission propulsion engine design can be modeled mathematically as a multivariable global optimization problem, with a sequence of subproblems, which are specific to the mission events defined through Mach number, altitude, and power setting combinations.

Decadal Prediction Skill in the GEOS-5 Forecast System

A suite of decadal predictions has been conducted with the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office's (GMAO's) GEOS-5 Atmosphere-Ocean general circulation model. The hind casts are initialized every December 1st from 1959 to 2010, following the CMIP5 experimental protocol for decadal predictions. The initial conditions are from a multivariate ensemble optimal interpolation ocean and sea-ice reanalysis, and from GMAO's atmospheric reanalysis, the modern-era retrospective analysis for research and applications. The mean forecast skill of a three-member-ensemble is compared to that of an experiment without initialization but also forced with observed greenhouse gases. The results show that initialization increases the forecast skill of North Atlantic sea surface temperature compared to the uninitialized runs, with the increase in skill maintained for almost a decade over the subtropical and mid-latitude Atlantic. On the other hand, the initialization reduces the skill in predicting the warming trend over some regions outside the Atlantic. The annual-mean Atlantic meridional overturning circulation index, which is defined here as the maximum of the zonally-integrated overturning stream function at mid-latitude, is predictable up to a 4-year lead time, consistent with the predictable signal in upper ocean heat content over the North Atlantic. While the 6- to 9-year forecast skill measured by mean squared skill score shows 50 percent improvement in the upper ocean heat content over the subtropical and mid-latitude Atlantic, prediction skill is relatively low in the sub-polar gyre. This low skill is due in part to features in the spatial pattern of the dominant simulated decadal mode in upper ocean heat content over this region that differ from observations. An analysis of the large-scale temperature budget shows that this is the result of a model bias, implying that realistic simulation of the climatological fields is crucial for skillful decadal forecasts.

Multidisciplinary optimization of a controlled space structure using 150 design variables

A general optimization-based method for the design of large space platforms through integration of the disciplines of structural dynamics and control is presented. The method uses the global sensitivity equations approach and is especially appropriate for preliminary design problems in which the structural and control analyses are tightly coupled. The method is capable of coordinating general purpose structural analysis, multivariable control, and optimization codes, and thus, can be adapted to a variety of controls-structures integrated design projects. The method is used to minimize the total weight of a space platform while maintaining a specified vibration decay rate after slewing maneuvers.

Three applications are discussed: (1) air bearing systems in two dimensions that yield high quality free-flying, flexible, and contact dynamics; (2) validation of docking mechanisms with misalignment and target dynamics; and (3) computer vision technology for target location and real-time tracking. All the testbeds are supported by a network of engineering workstations for dynamic and controls analyses. Dynamic simulation of multibody rigid and elastic systems are performed with the TREETOPS code. MATRIXx/System-Build and PRO-MATLAB/Simulab are the tools for control design and analysis using classical and modern techniques such as H-infinity and LQG/LTR. SANDY is a general design tool to optimize numerically a multivariable robust compensator with a user-defined structure. Mathematica and Macsyma are used to derive symbolically dynamic and kinematic equations.
