Graphite Oxidation Rate Study on ET-10 and ETU-10 Grades - Task 4: QA Support and Testing for Structural Graphite Oxidation

INL performed targeted oxidation tests to measure oxidation rates for samples of ET-10 and ETU-10 graphite under CRADA No. 21CRA22 Mod. 3, Annex A, “Tritium Testing to Support Kairos Power Advanced Reactor Demonstration” (04/02/2024). All testing was conducted within INL’s Carbon Characterization Laboratory (CCL) using test standard ASTM D7542-21 "Standard Test Method for Air Oxidation of Carbon and Graphite in the Kinetic Regime" [ASTM International, 2021]. Kairos Power provided all test specimens through its graphite vendor Ibiden, Inc. to INL and ASTM specimen specified dimensions. Information within this report only provides the Arrhenius oxidation rate plots as a function of temperature for each graphite grade tested. The raw mass loss per time data will be provided on the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS) portal located on the INL information system.

ECAR-1943 AGC-1 INDIVIDUAL SPECIMEN FLUENCE, TEMPERATURE, AND LOAD CALCULATION AND TABULATION

This ECAR calculates the fluence and temperature of the AGC-1 specimens as they change elevation through the course of the experiment. The specimen elevation varies as the specimen stack shrinks due to irradiation and load induced creep. The compressed specimen stacks (S-1 thru S-6) have a graphite pushrod that applies a gas cylinder load. The top of the pushrod position is measured and recorded in the NGNP Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS). The bottom of each of these compressed stacks is supported by the lower specimen holder which also shrinks as a result of irradiation and load. The specimen holder post-irradiation length was recorded during post-irradiation examination (PIE). Assuming the specimen holder shrinkage is linear with respect to the fluence received, the position of the top of the specimen holder can be calculated with respect to reactor integrated power. Assuming that individual specimen shrinkage is proportional to the fluence received, and that the shrinkage behavior is similar in all the specimens, the individual specimen position can be calculated.

ANS Winter 2024 Summary: MCCAFE: The Monte Carlo Constructor for ATR Fuel Elements

The Irradiation Experiment Neutronics Analysis Department at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has implemented a new analysis workflow for experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). One key piece of this workflow is the Monte Carlo Constructor for ATR Fuel Elements, or MCCAFE. For each ATR operating cycle, the Reactor and Nuclear Safety Engineering (RNSE) Department first solves the core in eigenvalue mode and depletes the driver fuel materials. In a separate calculation, neutronics analysts model and deplete the materials of one or more irradiation experiments, usually in a series of fixed-source Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) models of the ATR for neutron transport calculations. It was desirable to use the results of the former calculations to inform the models of the latter. MCCAFE is a Python program developed using American Society of Mechanical Engineers Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 procedures at INL. Its purpose is to take the calculated results from the RNSE depletion solutions and the measured or projected operating parameters from the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS) to generate fixed-source models of the ATR core at given points in time across one or more cycles.

Anomaly Detection for Online Monitoring of Thermocouple Sensors in the Advanced Test Reactor

This study explores data-driven anomaly detection methods to analyze sensor fail- ures in the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) nuclear fuel irradiation experiments. Specifically, we examine failures of thermocouples (TCs), which are critical for mon- itoring and controlling in-reactor temperatures during operation. Failures were pri- marily observed during abrupt power transitions and manifested as sensor drop-outs, drifts, or unexplained behavior. We applied three time-series analysis techniques— rolling mean smoothing, matrix profile, and vector auto-regression (VAR)—to de- tect anomalies in TC data prior to failure events. The rolling mean method effec- tively highlighted deviations aligned with reported failures, while the matrix profile provided partial early warning but sometimes flagged normal fluctuations during power-down periods. VAR shows potential in capturing multivariate dependencies but requires further calibration. A rare case of TC drift was also documented, which did not result in failure, underscoring the challenge of building predictive models with sparse positive examples. Our findings demonstrate that traditional statistical tools can aid anomaly detection but have limited predictive power without richer training data. We propose future directions including synthetic data generation, real- time surrogate modeling, and multi-modal feature integration. This work provides a foundation for applying robust anomaly detection frameworks to mission-critical sensor systems in experimental settings.

AGR-1, AGR-2, AGR-3/4, and AGR-5/6/7 DimensionalChange Analysis

A series of fuel irradiation experiments have been planned in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to support the licensing and operation of the Advanced Reactor Technologies high temperature gas-cooled reactor. The advanced gas reactor (AGR) experiments are comprised of multiple independent capsules containing multiple cylindrical fuel compacts, placed inside of a graphite cylinder in ATR. The purpose of the AGR experiments is to provide data on fuel performance under irradiation, support fuel process development, qualify the fuel for normal operating conditions, provide irradiated fuel for accident testing, and support the development of fuel performance and fission product transport models. The advanced graphite creep (AGC) experiments provide irradiation creep data for design and licensing. To date, six irradiation campaigns have been completed: AGR-1 (December, 2006 – November, 2009); AGR-2 (June, 2010 – October, 2013); AGR-3/4 (December, 2011 – April, 2014); AGC-1 (September, 2009 – January, 2011); AGC-2 (April, 2011 – May, 2012); and AGC-3 (November, 2012 – April, 2014).

Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System Plan

The United States Department of Energy Advanced Reactor Technologies Program was formed in Fiscal Year 2015 and encompasses the Next Generation Nuclear Plant Project and Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) Program as they were known previously. The VHTR Program was created to support design and licensing of the first VHTR nuclear plant. Data created for and used by the program must be qualified for use, stored in a readily accessible electronic form, categorized to assure the correct data are used, and controlled to prevent data corruption or inadvertent changes. The Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System was designed to support the data needs of the VHTR Program, at the time and now the Advanced Reactor Technologies Program. Since its inception, use of the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System has expanded to support additional projects and programs with similar requirements for control, analysis, and availability of large data sets.
