Identification of a Na + -Binding Site near the Oxygen-Evolving Complex of Spinach Photosystem II

The oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII) is an oxomanganese cluster composed of four redox-active Mn ions, and one redox-inactive Ca 2+ ion, with two nearby bound Cl – ions. Sodium is a common counter-ion of both chloride and hydroxide anions, and a sodium-specific binding site has not been identified near the OEC. Furthermore, we find that the oxygen-evolution activity of spinach PSII increases with [Na + ], particularly at high pH. A Na + -specific binding site next to the OEC, upon deprotonation of the D1-H337 amino-acid residue, is suggested by the analysis of two recently published PSII cryo-EM maps in combination with quantum mechanical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations.

A visible to near-infrared nanocrystalline organic photodetector with ultrafast photoresponse

Organic photoelectron conversion devices, due to their solution process and wide use in portable devices, have attracted intensive interest. In this work, a newly developed active layer of D18:Y6 is used to fabricate an organic photodetector and the device of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/D18:Y6/Phen-NaDPO/Ag shows a responsivity of 680 mA W –1 and a detectivity of 6.35 × 10 13 Jones (1 Jones = 1 cm Hz 1/2 W –1 ) at a wavelength of 850 nm. Additionally, this device shows a wide linear dynamic range of 120 dB, indicating a potential near-infrared region (NIR) detector system. Owing to the minimal exciton binding energy of 37.6 meV for Y6, a desirable energy offset for efficient electron–hole pair dissociation and an ultrafast charge transfer of ~58 ps at the interface of D18:Y6, the obtained organic photodetector has demonstrated a photoresponse time as fast as 1.8 μs upon laser light excitation without an external driven voltage. More importantly, D18 shows a preferred out-of-plane orientation with strong intensities and Y6 exhibits a preferred orientation along the in-plane direction on lamellar stacking, which facilitates charge transport. This work has demonstrated significant progress in exploring D18:Y6 NIR organic devices with a wide photosensitivity linearity and ultrafast photoresponse.

Long-wavelength-infrared laser filamentation in solids in the near-single-cycle regime

We experimentally demonstrate long-wavelength-infrared (LWIR) femtosecond filamentation in solids. Systematic investigations of supercontinuum (SC) generation and self-compression of the LWIR pulses assisted by laser filamentation are performed in bulk KrS-5 and ZnSe, pumped by ∼ <#comment/> 145 f s , 9 µm, 10 µJ pulses from an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier operating at 10 kHz of repetition rate. Multi-octave SC spectra are demonstrated in both materials. While forming stable single filament, 1.5 cycle LWIR pulses with 4.5 µJ output pulse energy are produced via soliton-like self-compression in a 5 mm thick KrS-5. The experimental results quantitatively agree well with the numerical simulation based on the unidirectional pulse propagation equation. This work shows the experimental feasibility of high-energy, near-single-cycle LWIR light bullet generation in solids.

Modeling the use of mobile modular gas samplers in near-field detection

The Wireless Independent Noble Gas Sampler (WINGS) is a mobile, modular gas sampling system designed for use in low infrastructure environments. In the case of a suspected underground nuclear explosion (UNE), WINGS units could be deployed to detect noble gases emanating from the suspected explosion site or identify gases originating from another source entering the local area from offsite. In conclusion, this work uses the atmospheric transport modeling tool inline WRF-HYSPLIT to test the effectiveness of WINGS units around a suspected UNE site as a function of sampler density and distance from the emission point of gases from a UNE.

Transient Symmetry Controls Photo Dynamics near Conical Intersections

Excited-state chemistry lacks generalised symmetry rules. With many femtochemistry studies focused on individual cases, it is hard to build up the same level of chemical intuition for excited-states as exists for ground states. Here, we unravel the degrees of freedom involved in ultrafast internal conversion (IC) by mapping the vibrational coherence of the initial wavepacket, and the dependence on molecular symmetry in various cyclic tertiary amines. Molecular symmetry plays an important role in the preservation of vibrational coherence in the transit from one electronic state to another. We show here that it is sufficient for the molecule to simply have the possibility of a more symmetric structure to achieve the preservation of vibrational coherence. It can be transient and still lead to preservation. Furthermore, this finding provides an additional angle on how symmetry influences electronic transitions and an additional piece to the puzzle of establishing symmetry-based selection rules for excited-state processes.

Multi-Model Future Typical Meteorological (fTMY) Weather Files for nearly every US County

Exploring climate-induced impacts on building energy consumption can provide valuable insights for sustainable energy planning and environmental management in the face of a changing climate. By utilizing future weather data statistically downscaled from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) General Circulation Models (GCMs) from 2020-2100, this paper presents a broadening industry-consensus approach for generating future Typical Meteorological Year (fTMY) weather files through a combination of statistical downscaling and high-performance computing that generalizes across decades, multiple locations for a region, and varying climate models. Furthermore, these fTMY files have been generated for 3,128 US counties for capturing potential weather on a 20-year basis.
