sas-temper

Modeling remains a considerable challenge for practitioners of SAXS and SANS because the materials being studied are not highly ordered, the length scales being studied are large, and the information content of the data is low. Data analysis is both challenging and time consuming. Novices often rely on the assistance of an expert, such as the instrument scientist who supported them at the facility where the experiment was performed, to analyze their data. The high flux provided by modern facilities makes it possible to study dozens of samples or sample conditions during a single trip. Ultimately, the high throughput of modern instruments limits access to instrument scientists. A bottleneck in the research effort results that reduces facility productivity. Sas-temper seeks to address this problem, as well as the intrinsic difficulties of being confident in non-linear least squared fitting of data, by providing tools that automate much of the manual process of initial data fitting and refinement, as well as by providing tools for characterizing the nature of the parameter space that fits the measured data. The tools provided by sas-temper help small-angle scattering practitioners transition data into results.

epJSON Editor

The software provides an interface to the EnergyPlus input file, providing similar functionality to the IdfEditor tool but written in Python and specifically targeting the JSON-formatted input file. This interface occupies (as IdfEditor did previously) the niche between directly editing the input file and use of a more full-featured graphical user interface, providing both advanced and novice users with a simple interface. An extensive effort was made to gather stakeholder feedback in order to avoid merely duplicating the features of IdfEditor and to build an interface that met the needs of users both now and into the future.

Method to Investigate Cognitive Aging Effects in Nuclear Operations Using the Rancor Microworld Simulator

Many nuclear power plant (NPP) operators are close to, or at retirement age. Since NPP operators are responsible for tasks that engage different and complex cognitive abilities, human factors researchers recently called for the need to examine cognitive aging effects and potential interactions with modernized control rooms. One way control rooms are being modernized is by replacing paper-based procedures with computer-based procedures (CBPs). This paper outlines a method for testing preference and usability of three types of CBPs as a function of age, in simulated NPP operations. The Rancor Microworld Simulator will be used, which mimics an NPP control room, allowing novices to learn to perform operator tasks quickly. The experiment will have two independent variables: age (young and old) and CBP-type (Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3). The three types of CBPs vary in levels of embedded instrumentation and controls. Adults aged 18–25 years (young group) and =60 years (older group) will be recruited from the general population. The dependent variables will be preference and usability metrics via survey and simulator logs. All participants will perform two scenario types (startup and loss of feedwater operations) and will be randomly assigned to one type of CBP to guide them through the scenario. Analyses of variance (ANOVAs) will be used to determine whether there is a main effect of age and any age x CBP-type interactions on the preference and usability dependent variables.

Coal-based Bricks & Blocks (CBBs): Process Development to Prototype Fabrication Coupled with Techno-Economic Analysis and Market Survey

The decline of coal use for energy production provides an abundance of local feedstock for new innovative uses and value-added products. Expanding the U.S. coal-value chain to manufacture high-value carbon products can strengthen the nation’s energy and mineral security, enhance the U.S. national defense security, increase the United States’ economic prosperity, while achieving U.S. environmental objectives. The primary project goal is a relatively light-weight composite product with superior (or comparable) compressive strength. Both virgin and, where available, post-consumer recycled thermoplastic versions are tested for each thermoplastic species. A useful attribute of thermoplastics as binders is that they can be heated to their melting point, cooled, and reheated again without significant degradation. A key advantage of thermoset CBBs is that they require only mixing and molding. CBB advantages include low cost, availability, binding ability and processability. Coal-based bricks and blocks (CBBs) weigh about 50% less than clay bricks and can be manufactured with an interlocking design to promote ease of use for the novice builder. CBB formulation is evaluated according to a design-of-experiments (DoE) approach. DoE variables are a) relative weight fractions of binder, b) relative proportions of large versus small (milled) anthracite size fractions, and c) additive percentage. Fabrication methods include hot-press molding and extrusion, the later being the most commercially viable. CBBs are tested for compressive strength, modulus of rupture (by flexure test) and water absorption per ASTM C67, with density determined by the Archimedes drainage method. Fractured interfaces are examined by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) to resolve fracture dynamics and interior microstructure uniformity. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used to compare plastic transition temperatures i.e., glass and melting temperatures to contrast virgin with post-consumer recycled thermoplastics and optimize their usage. These results are used in the DoE analysis to identify the binder and relative weight percentages for optimum strength, density, and porosity. Overall, CBBs possess strength comparable to clay-based bricks but are non-permeable and hydrophobic, and hence resistant to degradation by freeze-fracturing, corrosion, and efflorescence. The strongest composites have been made with the following thermoplastic binders (in order of strength): thermoset, high-density polyethylene crosslink resin, high-density polyethylene, nylon 6/6, and polypropylene. Results from a techno-economic analysis TEA show economy of scale for CBBs by modularization and reveal the binder as the cost driver for material costs. Ideally, the incorporation of post-consumer recycled thermoplastic will decrease material acquisition costs and increase product sustainability. Notably, CBBs do not require the high temperature calcination needed to produce cement, nor do they require firing in the 1600-2400 °F range for three days using natural gas, as do clay brick equivalents. Instead, CBBs are heated to a modest <600 °F according to the melt flow index of the thermoplastic binder. Existing anthracite mines can be expanded to produce CBBs to reduce aggregate transportation costs and emissions that exist for clay bricks. TEA reflects this reduced energy cost while a comparative CO2 emission analysis quantifies the reduced environmental footprint. The market survey identifies several commercialization opportunities, dependent upon the brick classification.

PUFFIn Software Modeling for Quality Management

PUFFIn (PENELOPE User Friendly Fast Interface) was designed as a fast and simple Monte Carlo simulation tool for the transport of photons and electrons, with a primary purpose as a learning and education tool for a broad range of static configurations in the radiation processing industry. Development of the PUFFIn software is funded by the Office of Radiological Security (ORS) within the United States National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). PUFFIn helps fill the education and knowledge gaps in the industry, as identified in reports by Fermilab (2017) and the IAEA (2020). PUFFIn uses the PENELOPE (NEA-2023) physics engine to perform simulations on static configurations. PUFFIn has support for multiple geometry types from simple, single material simulations to full 3D configurations created from CAD input files or images from X-Ray Tomography scans. PUFFin was designed to be easy for the novice user, it will generate the input and geometry files required by PENLOPE and will display the output plots within the PUFFIn interface. PUFFin is distributed for free but requires a free workshop so users can be adequately trained in its use. Workshops have been presented in the past at Texas A&M university, the Aerial-CRT facility in Strasbourg France and Jakarta Indonesia. PUFFIn simulations have been validated by 10 MeV ebeam experiments done at Aerial-CRT in France (Radiation Physics and Chemistry 222 (2024) 111774). Further user experimental comparisons were made at the medical product hands on workshop at Texas A&M in October 2024.

Improving Performance via Energy Efficiency JUSTIFI: Open-Source Software for Identifying and Quantifying Non-Energy Benefits

Energy efficiency is pivotal to achieving operational excellence, as it enhances value while reducing waste. This presentation explores the integration of non-energy benefits (NEBs) into energy efficiency projects, which can lead to risk reduction, value creation, and cost savings. By quantifying NEBs - such as improved safety, decreased pollution, and increased productivity - companies can strengthen their business cases for energy investments, ultimately improving payback periods and aligning with strategic goals. Designed for a diverse audience, from trained auditors to novices in energy assessments, we have developed open-source software called JUSTIFI, NEB finding methodology, and training materials which build on existing frameworks and leverages resources from the U.S. Department of Energy and Better Plants energy system analysis software suite such as MEASUR. This work aims to maximize ROI through NEB identification, utilizing tools like JUSTIFI and the NEBs Discovery Protocol.

Active Learning for Rapid Targeted Synthesis of Compositionally Complex Alloys

The next generation of advanced materials is tending toward increasingly complex compositions. Synthesizing precise composition is time-consuming and becomes exponentially demanding with increasing compositional complexity. An experienced human operator does significantly better than a novice but still struggles to consistently achieve precision when synthesis parameters are coupled. The time to optimize synthesis becomes a barrier to exploring scientifically and technologically exciting compositionally complex materials. This investigation demonstrates an active learning (AL) approach for optimizing physical vapor deposition synthesis of thin-film alloys with up to five principal elements. We compared AL-based on Gaussian process (GP) and random forest (RF) models. The best performing models were able to discover synthesis parameters for a target quinary alloy in 14 iterations. We also demonstrate the capability of these models to be used in transfer learning tasks. RF and GP models trained on lower dimensional systems (i.e., ternary, quarternary) show an immediate improvement in prediction accuracy compared to models trained only on quinary samples. Furthermore, samples that only share a few elements in common with the target composition can be used for model pre-training. We believe that such AL approaches can be widely adapted to significantly accelerate the exploration of compositionally complex materials.

FLASSH 1.0: Thermal scattering law evaluation and cross section generation for reactor physics applications

The Full Law Analysis Scattering System Hub (FLASSH) is a modern, advanced code which evaluates the thermal scattering law (TSL) along with accompanying cross sections. FLASSH features generalized methods which accommodate any material structure. Historical approximations including the incoherent and cubic approximations have been removed. Instead, the latest release of FLASSH features advanced physics options including distinct corrections (1-phonon contributions) and non-cubic formulations. The non-cubic elastic and inelastic contributions are necessary to accurately evaluate 1-phonon contributions. Both non-cubic and 1-phonon calculations require high-density sampling of the various scattering directions. Optimization and parallelization of these routines were therefore necessary to produce results in a reasonable timeframe. With these notable improvements to the generalized TSL, FLASSH 1.0 meets benchmark requirements, demonstrating noticeable agreement with experiment for both TSLs and the resulting integrated cross sections. Additional features including a graphical user interface (GUI), plotting diagnostics, and formatted output options including ACE files allow users to complete a TSL evaluation with minimal input and maximum flexibility. The user GUI creates input files for FLASSH, reducing user error and also providing built-in error checks. Autofill options and suggested input values help make TSL evaluation accessible to novice users. The FLASSH code is compiled to run on both Windows and Linux platforms with automatic parallelization. Precise Motion Control of Hybrid Hydraulic Electric Architecture (HHEA)

Off-highway heavy-duty vehicles have been long-standing users of hydraulic systems for power transmission and control. However, traditional hydraulic systems suffer from significant energy losses which lead to increased operating costs and a larger carbon footprint due to higher CO2 emissions. Improving the efficiency of these mobile machines is crucial not only for reducing their environmental impact but also for saving billions of dollars in operating costs. Currently, the state-of-the-art Load Sensing Architecture uses throttling valves for control, which significantly reduces its efficiency and does not recuperate energy from over-running loads. Researchers have developed several architectures such as Common Pressure Rail systems, Displacement Control, STEAM, and Electrohydraulic Architecture to improve the efficiency of off-road mobile machines. However, each of these architectures has its drawbacks. To increase system efficiency and take advantage of electrification benefits, our research group has developed a novel Hybrid Hydraulic-Electric Architecture (HHEA). The HHEA can significantly improve efficiency, decrease the size of electrical components, and maintain control performance. This new architecture has the potential to revolutionize the off-highway mobile machine industry and lead to a more sustainable future. The HHEA uses a set of common pressure rails to provide the majority of power to the actuators via power-dense hydraulics and uses electric motors for precise control and power modulation. In the context of off-road mobile machines, energy savings are undoubtedly important but it is equally important to consider the machines’ ability to perform tasks with precision and accuracy according to given commands. Therefore, precise motion control is of utmost importance to maintain the utility of Hybrid Hydraulic-Electric Architecture (HHEA). The HHEA presents a unique challenge to motion control due to the discrete pressure changes that occur when the system switches between selected pressure rails. These changes are made to minimize system inefficiencies or to keep the system within the torque capability of the electric motor. Hence, it is important to solve the motion control challenges for HHEA. This thesis aims at developing an effective motion control strategy for HHEA. The dissertation presents a two-tiered control strategy for HHEA, comprising a high-level and a low-level controller. The primary responsibility of the high- level controller is to optimize energy efficiency by making informed pressure rail selections. On the other hand, the low-level controller is focused on achieving precise motion control of the HHEA, which is crucial for realizing the desired reference trajectories. To achieve this, the low-level controller utilizes a passivity-based backstepping integral controller as the nominal control, which handles the motion control between two pressure rail switches. Additionally, a separate least norm controller is utilized as a transition controller to manage motion control during pressure rail transitions. The effectiveness of the combined control strategy is demonstrated through experiments conducted on two hardware-in-the-loop testbeds. Furthermore, the HHEA is installed on the boom and stick actuators of a backhoe arm to build a Human-in-the-Loop system that a human operator can control. A real-time rail switching algorithm is developed to determine pressure rail switching based on present duty cycle information from the operator. Modifications have been made to the human-machine interface to achieve more intuitive control. Modifications include performing control in the task-oriented coordinates, incorporating pressure feedback to enhance control with physical interaction, and using velocity field control to simplify multi-degree-of-freedom tasks and to enable novice operators to perform them with reduced risk, improved efficiency, and productivity. The research in this dissertation makes significant contributions to the field of off-road mobile machine control, providing a novel and effective control strategy for the HHEA, and demonstrating the potential for simplified machine operation.
