The role of chemical potential in compensation control in Si:AlGaN

Reduction in compensation in Si-doped Al-rich AlGaN is demonstrated via chemical potential control (CPC). The chemical potentials and the resulting formation energies of carbon on the nitrogen site (C N ) and cation vacancy complex with Si (V III + nSi III ) were related to growth variables through a thermodynamic supersaturation model, which quantitatively predicted the incorporation of C N and the generation of the V III + nSi III complex. The compensation “knee” behavior, i.e., decreasing conductivity with increasing Si incorporation beyond a certain concentration, was successfully controlled. The maximum free carrier concentration was improved by impeding the formation of V III + nSIi III complexes under III-richer conditions, while the impurity compensation by C N was reduced by making the growth environment N-richer. The results of Hall effect measurement and photoluminescence agreed well with quantitative theoretical predictions of the CPC model. Based on the developed model, the highest conductivity of 160 Ω -1 cm -1 with free carrier concentration of 3 × 10 19 cm -3 in Al 0.7 Ga 0.3 N ever reported was achieved on single crystal AlN substrates. The demonstrated predictive power of the CPC model should greatly reduce the empirical analysis or iterative experimentation that would otherwise be necessary.

Implications of first neutrino-induced nuclear recoil measurements in direct detection experiments: Probing nonstandard interaction via CE ν NS

PandaX-4T and XENONnT have recently reported the first measurement of nuclear recoils induced by the B 8 solar neutrino flux, through the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering ( CE ν NS ) channel. As long anticipated, this is an important milestone for dark matter searches as well as for neutrino physics. This measurement means that these detectors have reached exposures such that searches for low mass, ≲ 10 GeV dark matter cannot be analyzed using the background-free paradigm going forward. It also opens a new era for these detectors to be used as neutrino observatories. In this paper we assess the sensitivity of these new measurements to new physics in the neutrino sector. We focus on neutrino nonstandard interactions (NSI) and show that—despite the still moderately low statistical significance of the signals—these data already provide valuable information. We find that limits on NSI from PandaX-4T and XENONnT measurements are comparable to those derived using combined COHERENT CsI and LAr data. Furthermore, they provide sensitivity to pure τ flavor parameters that are not accessible using stopped-pion or reactor sources. With larger exposures and consequently improvements of statistical uncertainties, forthcoming data from these experiments will provide important, novel results for CE ν NS -related physics. Stochastic Look-Ahead Commitment: A Case Study in MISO

This paper introduces the Stochastic Look Ahead Commitment (SLAC) software prototyped and tested for the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) look ahead commitment process. SLAC can incorporate hundreds of wind, load, and net scheduled interchange (NSI) uncertainty scenarios. It uses a progressive hedging method to solve a novel two-stage stochastic unit commitment. The first stage commitment decisions, made only for those generators whose decision to commit or not in each time period cannot be deferred, can cover the uncertainties within the next three hours. The second stage includes both the dispatch for each of the scenarios and the commitment decisions that can be deferred. Study results on 15 MISO production days show that SLAC may bring economic and reliability benefits under uncertainty.

New directions for joint neutrino oscillation measurements with T2K and NOvA

The first joint analysis of data from the NOvA and T2K neutrino oscillations experiments was published in 2025, offering the most precise measurements of the larger mass splitting $\Delta m_{32}^{2}$, the largest mixing angle $\theta_{23}$, and the CP-violating phase $\delta_{CP}$ available at the time. In addition to working towards a reanalysis with additional data collected since that analysis, the collaborations are now exploring possible constraints on BSM physics scenarios. This poster will discuss the potential of a joint measurement of parameters in a framework treating effective non-standard neutral-current neutrino-matter interactions, NC-NSI. Uniquely, the differing baselines and energies of T2K and NOvA allow strong constraints to be set on the electron-muon and electron-tau parameters of NSI contributions to the Hamiltonian, while at the same time maintaining good sensitivity to the standard 3-flavor neutrino oscillations parameters, including the CP phase.

Sensitivities to neutrino non-standard interactions from the disappearance of muon (anti)neutrinos at the NOvA experiment

The experimental confirmation of the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations provided evidence for a non-zero value for the mass of neutrinos, a property not initially predicted by the Standard Model of Physics. Investigations of the existence of the so called Physics Beyond the Standard Model is a subject of growing interest and effort in the field of particle physics. Interactions of neutrinos with matter are well described by the Standard Model, however in the presence of new Physics, additional phenomena regarding neutrino properties would be possible, including non-standard interactions of neutrinos with matter. The NOvA experiment, at Fermilab, has been investigating neutrino oscillations through studies of ν µ produced at the Fermilab accelerator facilities, and also comprise a suitable environment for investigation of additional phenomena taking part in the neutrino oscillation framework. We show in this thesis the results of the sensitivity studies to neutrino non standard interactions in the NOvA experiment through investigation of the disappearance of muon (anti)neutrinos during their evolution in the NOvA 810 km baseline. We investigate the effect of the NSI parameters, |ε µτ | and δ µτ , on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters sin 2 (θ 23 ) and Δ$m^2_{32}$, as well as the relation between each parameter, for both neutrino mass hierarchies. This study makes use of an exposure of 9.48 × 10 20 POT for neutrino beam (FHC), and 12.33 × 10 20 POT for antineutrino beam (RHC). No deviations from the standard oscillation scenario is found at the 90% CL limit. The joint neutrino and antineutrino fit yields a limit of |ε µτ | ≤ 0.086 (0.085) for a fixed value of δ µτ = 0, and |ε µτ | ≤ 1.054 (1.053) for the case where both NSI parameters are fitted, for the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy, at the 90% CL. In the current sensitivity, all values of δ µτ are found to be allowed. The 90% CL interval for the standard oscillation parameters are Δ$m^2_{32}$ ϵ [2.379, 2.580] and sin 2 (θ 23 ) ϵ [0.420, 0.602] for the normal hierarchy scenario, and Δ$m^2_{32}$ ϵ [-2.639, - 2.438] and sin 2 (θ 23 ) ϵ [0.418, 0.602] for the inverted hierarchy scenario.

BSM Studies Using Long-baseline Neutrino Experiment

The standard model of particle physics cannot account for the various physical phenomena present in nature. For instance, the visible matter constitutes only about 5$\%$ of the whole universe, and the remaining content is believed to be dark matter and dark energy. Unfortunately, the standard model does not provide us with a good candidate for dark matter. The leading dark matter candidate is weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) having a mass of less than 1 GeV. We will require a broad, fixed target neutrino experiment to probe the vast parameter space for the light-dark matter particle. NOvA is a high luminosity long-baseline fixed-target accelerator neutrino experiment at Fermilab. It can provide a potentially exciting probe in searching for signatures of DM scattering with electrons in its near detectors. We aim to search for the MeV-scale dark matter particles that might be generated within the NuMI beam and produce detectable electron scattering signals in the NOvA Near Detector. Not only in the dark matter sector, the standard model cannot explain the neutrino mass and mixings. The neutrino propagation in matter can be affected by non-standard interactions (NSI), which is beyond the standard model phenomena. The constraints coming from the NSI sectors can affect the standard oscillation parameters like atmospheric mixing angle $\theta_{23}$ and CP-phase $\delta_{CP}$.

How to identify different new neutrino oscillation physics scenarios at DUNE

Next generation neutrino oscillation experiments are expected to measure the remaining oscillation parameters with very good precision. They will have unprecedented capabilities to search for new physics that modify oscillations. DUNE, with its broad band beam, good particle identification, and relatively high energies will provide an excellent environment to search for new physics. If deviations from the standard three-flavor oscillation picture are seen however, it is crucial to know which new physics scenario is found so that it can be verified elsewhere and theoretically understood. We investigate several benchmark new physics scenarios by looking at existing long-baseline accelerator neutrino data from NOvA and T2K and determine at what sensitivity DUNE can differentiate among them. We consider sterile neutrinos and both vector and scalar non-standard neutrino interactions, all with new complex phases, the latter of which could conceivably provide absolute neutrino mass scale information. We find that, in many interesting cases, DUNE will have good model discrimination. We also perform a new fit to NOvA and T2K data with scalar NSI.

Neutrino non-standard interactions: Complementarity between LHC and oscillation experiments

We explore the complementarity between LHC searches and neutrino experiments in probing neutrino non-standard interactions. Our study spans the theoretical frameworks of effective field theory, simplified model and an illustrative UV completion, highlighting the synergies and distinctive features in all cases. We show that besides constraining the allowed NSI parameter space, the LHC data can break important degeneracies present in oscillation experiments such as DUNE, while the latter play an important role in probing light and weakly coupled physics undetectable at the LHC.

Oxidation Temperature-Dependent Electrochemical Doping of WO 3 Deposited via Atomic Layer Deposition

Silicon-based photoelectrochemical devices show promise for the performance of light-driven CO 2 reduction but suffer from instability under photoelectrochemical conditions relevant to CO 2 reduction. Coating silicon electrodes with thin layers of metal oxides has shown promise to passivate unstable silicon surfaces, and many different metal oxides can be deposited on silicon using various techniques. In this study, we investigate the fundamental photoelectrochemical performance of WO 3 -coated silicon photoelectrodes, which were generated by oxidation of W-metal films deposited via atomic layer deposition on both degenerately doped (nSi + ) and low-doped (pSi) silicon. Two different oxidation temperatures were investigated (400 and 600 °C), and it was found that the monoclinic phase of WO 3 predominates at both temperatures but that more grain boundaries are present in the 600 °C film. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the stoichiometry of both films was found to be 1:3 W:O, and low electron energy loss experiments indicate band gaps of 3.0 and 3.1 eV for 400 and 600 °C films, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that the electron transfer kinetics increased after continued redox cycling, particularly for the material produced at 400 °C. X-ray photoelectron spectra suggest that the observed increase in electrode conductivity is due to the formation of oxygen vacancies in the film. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated that charge transport through the films was impacted by the grain boundaries that formed during oxidation of the film. Photoelectrochemical studies on pSi/WO 3 electrodes were highly variable, only producing a photocurrent and photovoltage with some samples. Our best sample, formed at 400 °C, produced a photovoltage of 180 mV, which is lower than what has previously been reported for WO 3 -coated silicon (500 mV). We hypothesize that the variability in photoelectrochemical experiments arose from a roughened WSiO x interface that is generated during film preparation. WO 3 shows promise as a metal oxide coating for silicon, but our results suggest that formation of a high-quality interface between Si and WO 3 is vital for best performance.

High n -type conductivity and carrier concentration in Si-implanted homoepitaxial AlN

We demonstrate Si-implanted AlN with high conductivity (>1 Ω -1 cm -1 ) and high carrier concentration (5 × 101 8 cm -3 ). This was enabled by Si implantation into AlN with a low threading dislocation density (TDD) (<10 3 cm -2 ), a non-equilibrium damage recovery and dopant activation annealing process, and in situ suppression of self-compensation during the annealing. Low TDD and active suppression of V Al -nSi Al complexes via defect quasi Fermi level control enabled low compensation, while low-temperature, non-equilibrium annealing maintained the desired shallow donor state with an ionization energy of ~70 meV. The realized n-type conductivity and carrier concentration are over one order of magnitude higher than that reported thus far and present a major technological breakthrough in doping of AlN.

Probing neutrino mass models through resonances at neutrino telescopes

We study the detection prospects of relatively light charged scalars in radiative Majorana neutrino mass models, such as the Zee model and its variants using scalar leptoquarks, at current and future neutrino telescopes. In particular, we show that these scalar mediators can give rise to Glashow-like resonance features in the ultrahigh energy (UHE) neutrino event spectrum at the IceCube neutrino observatory and its high-energy upgrade IceCube-Gen2. The same scalars can also give rise to observable nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSIs), and we show that the UHE neutrinos provide a complementary probe of NSI. We also discuss an interesting possibility of producing such resonances by incoming sterile neutrino components in the case where neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac particles.

NOvA in 10 Minutes

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based at Fermilab, IL, USA, that observes $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu) \to \nu_\mu\ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ disappearance and $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu) \to \nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ appearance oscillations from a beam of muon neutrinos (anti-neutrinos) provided by the Fermilab's NuMI beamline. The experiment consists of two functionally identical active liquid scintillattor tracking calorimeters, both situated 14.6 mrad off-axis to the beam direction. The detectors are made out of extruded PVC cells arranged in alternating horizontal and vertical planes for 3-dimensional reconstruction of neutrino events. The NOvA experiment has a wide-ranging scientific program that includes studying standard 3-flavor neutrino oscillations, resolution of neutrino mass orderings, measuring the CP-violating phase, $\delta_{CP}$, beyond standard model (BSM) phenomenon such as non-standard interactions (NSI) and sterile neutrino searches, neutrino-nucleus cross-section measurements, exotics, astrophysics and more. The NOvA experiment leverages its identical detector technology to mitigate systematic uncertainties for its neutrino oscillation analysis. This talk will provide an overview of the experiment's detector design and the data-driven techniques used by the experiment in its neutrino oscillation analysis.

Standard and Non-Standard Neutrino Oscillations at the NOvA Experiment

Initially believed to be massless, the discovery of neutrino oscillations proved that neutrinos have masses, a feature not anticipated by the Standard Model of Elementary Particles. Investigations of the existence of the so-called physics Beyond the Standard Model is a subject of active effort in the field of particle physics. Interactions of neutrinos with matter are well described by the Standard Model, however in the presence of new physics our knowledge and ability to measure the standard neutrino oscillation parameters may be affected. Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) may arise as a subleading effect to the neutrino oscillation framework by introducing additional parameters resulting from a generalized matter potential.
