Fault Detection on Seismic Structural Images Using a Nested Residual U-Net

Automatic identification of faults on seismic structural images is a challenging yet crucial task in quantitative seismic interpretation. Human picking or attribute-based fault detection methods may misidentify faults on noisy, complex seismic images. In this work, we develop a new automatic fault detection method using a nested residual U-shaped convolutional neural network. Each of the encoders and decoders in this neural network is a residual U-Net, leading to a nested architecture. The final fault map results from the fusion of three fault maps with low, medium, and high fault resolutions. We demonstrate the excellent fault-detection capability of our nested neural network using a series of synthetic and field seismic images. We find that our approach produces clearer and more interpretable fault maps than the current state-of-the-art U-Net fault detection method, particularly on noisy seismic images. Our new automatic fault detection method can facilitate reliable quantitative seismic interpretation on field seismic images.

Band structure and Fermi surface nesting in LaSb 2

Here we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic structure of the charge density wave (CDW) system LaSb 2 . This compound is among an interesting group of materials that manifests both a CDW transition and lower temperature superconductivity. We find the DFT calculations to be in good agreement with our ARPES data. The Fermi surface of LaSb 2 consists of two small hole pockets close to Γ and four larger pockets near the Brillouin zone boundary. The key features of the Fermi surface do not vary significantly with temperature. A saddle point is present at -0.19 eV below the Fermi level at Γ. Saddle points in the band structure have more pronounced effects on materials properties when they are located closer to the Fermi level, making doped LaSb 2 compounds a potential interesting subject of future research. Multiple peaks are present in the generalized, electronic susceptibility calculations, indicating the presence of three possible nesting vectors. We were not able to detect any signatures of the CDW transition at 355 K down to the lowest temperature of 7 K, pointing to the subtle nature of this transition. This is unusual, given that such a high transition temperature is expected to be associated with the presence of a large CDW gap. This is confirmed through investigation of the Fermi surface and through analysis of momentum distribution curves. It is possible that changes are subtle and occur below current sensitivity of our measurements.

Modeling household-level party composition behavior for multiparty activities: a random parameter nested logit modeling approach

This study presents findings of a household-level party composition model for multiparty activities. It exploits data from a comprehensive Household Travel Survey conducted by Chicago Metropolitan Agency of Planning. The study estimates a random parameter nested logit model to capture households’ unobserved preference heterogeneity and non-proportional substitution patterns in terms of activity party composition for multiparty activities. A wide variety of household demographics, activity attributes and residential neighborhood characteristics are examined in this paper. The magnitude of the impacts of the determinants are tested in this study by analyzing the elasticity of the variables, which suggests that household demographics and attributes of the multiparty activities have significant effects on the household-level activity party composition. Residential neighborhood characteristics, although somewhat less impactful, still play a meaningful role. This model will be implemented within the POLARIS transportation systems simulator to improve the activity generation modeling workflow, and the prediction accuracy of various activity-travel components.

Analysis of interstellar fragmentation structure based on IRAS images

The goal of this project was to develop new tools for the analysis of the structure of densely sampled maps of interstellar star-forming regions. A particular emphasis was on the recognition and characterization of nested hierarchical structure and fractal irregularity, and their relation to the level of star formation activity. The panoramic IRAS images provided data with the required range in spatial scale, greater than a factor of 100, and in column density, greater than a factor of 50. In order to construct a densely sampled column density map of a cloud complex which is both self-gravitating and not (yet?) stirred up much by star formation, a column density image of the Taurus region has been constructed from IRAS data. The primary drawback to using the IRAS data for this purpose is that it contains no velocity information, and the possible importance of projection effects must be kept in mind.

The panoramic IRAS images provided data with the required range in spatial scale, greater than a factor of 100, and in column density, greater than a factor of 50. In order to construct densely sampled column density maps of star-forming clouds, column density images of four nearby cloud complexes were constructed from IRAS data. The regions have various degrees of star formation activity, and most of them have probably not been affected much by the disruptive effects of young massive stars. The largest region, the Scorpius-Ophiuchus cloud complex, covers about 1000 square degrees (it was subdivided into a few smaller regions for analysis). Much of the work during the early part of the project focused on an 80 square degree region in the core of the Taurus complex, a well-studied region of low-mass star formation.

A multi-phase-field model of topological pattern formation during electrochemical dealloying of binary alloys

Porous metal structures produced by electrochemical dealloying have been extensively studied for use in various applications that require high surface areas. A new comprehensive multi-phase-field (MPF) model is proposed to study topological porous patterns formed by spontaneously etching a bulk binary alloy that involves electrochemical reactions, bulk and surface diffusion, ion transport, applied electrode potential, and charge conservation. The governing equations for the alloy-porous cluster-electrolyte system account for a generalized Butler-Volmer electrochemical reaction and are in accordance with the classical nucleation theory. Based on a quantitative examination of the effects of electrode potential and precursor composition, the simulation results reproduce typical phenomena including passive surface dealloying, active porosity evolution, critical potential, and characteristic length scale in two-dimension (2-D) and three-dimension (3-D). To consider more complicated dealloying systems, the evolutions of a bimodal porous metal structure, nanocomposite, and nested porous network with a structured hierarchy are investigated. Finally, the proposed model can be a useful tool for understanding and predicting the morphology evolution of diverse porous structures during electrochemical dealloying.

Assessing the efficiency implications of renewable fuel policy design in the United States

Abstract Obligated parties have chosen to comply with the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) by increasing the blending of biomass‐based biodiesel beyond originally targeted levels rather than increasing blending/consumption of ethanol to targeted levels that would have required pricing higher blends of ethanol (E85) at or below an energy‐equivalent level to E10. This paper develops a welfare‐economic framework to analyze the extent to which the nested design and the accompanying cellulosic waiver credit and biodiesel tax credit contributed to a compliance strategy by blenders that favored blending of biodiesel instead of inducing consumption of E85, and its implications for social welfare.

Experimental inference of flux tunneling between magnetic island chains in tokamaks

We report confinement bifurcations due to flux tunneling in magnetic islands in toroidal plasmas. This occurs in 2/1 islands, triggered by decoupling of non-overlapping adjacent 5/2 islands. While subject to electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD), the temperature at the 2/1 O-point is flat before but peaks after decoupling. Here, this is shown to be due to a bifurcation from stochastic to nested magnetic structure, caused by the removal of flux tunneling through intersecting manifolds of overlapping heteroclinic tangles. 2/1 island stability correlates with coupling events in an ITER baseline scenario plasma where ECCD can not stabilize the coupled islands, showing the critical impact of flux tunneling on disruption avoidance in tokamaks.

Evaluating Awkward Arrays, uproot, and coffea as a query platform for High Energy Physics Data

Query languages for High Energy Physics (HEP) are an ever present topic within the field. A query language that can efficiently represent the nested data structures that encode the statistical and physical meaning of HEP data will help analysts by ensuring their code is more clear and pertinent. As the result of a multi-year effort to develop an in-memory columnar representation of high energy physics data, the NumPy, Awkward Array, and uproot Python packages present a mature and efficient interface to HEP data. Atop that base, the coffea package adds functionality to launch queries at scale, manage and apply experiment-specific transformations to data, and present a rich object-oriented columnar data representation to the analyst. Recently, a set of Analysis Description Language (ADL) benchmarks has been established to compare HEP queries in multiple languages and frameworks. In this paper we present these benchmark queries implemented within the coffea framework and discuss their readability and performance characteristics. We find that the columnar queries perform as well or better than the implementations given in previous studies.

Phase transitions of correlations in black hole geometries

We study the holographic realization of optimized correlation measures—measures of quantum correlation that generalize elementary entropic formulas—in two-dimensional thermal states dual to spacetimes with a black hole horizon. We consider the symmetric bipartite optimized correlation measures: the entanglement of purification, Q-correlation, R-correlation, and squashed entanglement, as well as the mutual information, a nonoptimized correlation measure, and identify the bulk surface configurations realizing their geometric duals over the parameter space of boundary region sizes and the black hole radius. This parameter space is divided into phases associated with given topologies for these bulk surface configurations, and first-order phase transitions occur as a new topology of bulk surfaces becomes preferred. The distinct phases can be associated with different degrees of correlation between the boundary regions and the thermal environment. The Q-correlation has the richest behavior, with a structure of nested optimizations leading to two topologically distinct bulk surface configurations being equally valid as geometric duals at generic points in the phase diagram.

EyeON

EyeON: Eye on Operational technology Software Supply Chain attacks have risen drastically over the past few years, none more well-known and impactful than the SolarWinds compromise. Criminal organizations inserted an attack vector into a specific version of the source code, giving themselves an air of credibility. Once news broke on SolarWinds, identifying compromised sites was very difficult, even knowing the culprit update. Software Bills of Materials (SBOM) have been touted as the solution to reclaiming control of your software supply chain. Deployment of SBOMs has been slow, however, due to conflicting standards, opaque storage requirements, and vendor adoption. Additionally, the path from obtaining an SBOM and securing your supply chain is unclear; how can an SBOM library be leveraged to provide insight to your attack surface? The EyeON tool, sponsored by Department of Energy Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (DoE CESER), aims to address these gaps by providing an encapsulated solution to tracking which updates have been installed in an enterprise, and alerting system administrators to vulnerabilities as they become known. Similar to a virus scanner, EyeON is a command line tool to parse either a single file, nested directory structure, or filesystem. It collects data such as signature (hashes), version information, VirusTotal tags, compiler, compilation date, and code signing information. Users will anonymously submit scan data periodically to DoE CESER, who will then compile a database of known software products employed by Critical Infrastructure and broadcast alerts based on discovered flaws as they arise.

FY2022 Status Update: A Probabilistic Model for Stress Corrosion Cracking of SNF Dry Storage Canisters

Understanding the potential risk of stress corrosion cracking of spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters has been identified as a knowledge gap for determining the safety of long-term interim storage of spent nuclear fuel. To address this, the DOE is funding a multi-lab DOE effort to understand the timing, occurrence, and consequences of potential canister SCC. Sandia National Laboratories has developed a probabilistic model for canister penetration by SCC. This model has been continuously updated at SNL since 2014. Model uncertainties are treated using a nested loop structure, where the outer loop accounts for uncertainties due to lack of data and the inner aleatoric loop accounts for uncertainties due to variation in nature. By separating uncertainties into these categories, it is possible to focus future work on reducing the most influential epistemic uncertainties. Several experimental studies have already been performed to improve the modeling approach through expanded process understanding and improved model parameterization. The resulting code is physics-based and intended to inform future work by identifying (1) important modeling assumptions, (2) experimental data needs, and (3) necessary model developments. In this document, several of the sub-models in the probabilistic SCC model have been exercised, and the intermediate results, as the model progresses from one sub-model to the next, are presented. Evaluating the sub-models in this manner provides a better understanding of sub-model outputs and has identified several unintended consequences of model assumptions or parameterizations, requiring updates to the modeling approach. The following updates have been made, and future updates have been identified.

DICOMs, Missiles, and Metadata: The U.S. Nuclear Weapons Program Leverages a Medical Standard

Digital Imagine and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images, although most commonly used in medical settings, have been widely adopted by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) for capturing images of the internal components in a nuclear weapon. DICOMs, a lesser-known file format that combine nested metadata structures with complex image data-including multiple planes, frames, and high resolution-require the creation of access copies to support usability within the DOE. Used primarily for ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)’s DICOM images and corresponding image metadata must be accessible to scientists and researchers via our institutional centralized databases. This paper describes the author's creation of a Python script that converts DICOM images into accessible, archive-friendly TIFF files while preserving key image data and metadata.

Simplifying Analysis of Hierarchical HDF5 and NetCDF4 Files with Xarray-Datatree

NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) contains thousands of Earth science datasets from satellites, models, and field campaigns. EOSDIS data are stored in formats that are well supported by the Earth Science community. These formats include the Hierarchical Data Format (HDF), with derivative flavors such as HDF-5 and the Network Common Data Format (NetCDF-4). The HDF specification allows for a directory-like hierarchy within a single file, known as "groups". Observational data and associated metadata within a single file can be distributed amongst multiple internal groups, which can also be nested to multiple levels. Working with datasets that have a group hierarchical structure can be difficult because of the nested structure of groups. Widely used packages, such as xarray, have data models that do not accommodate the hierarchical structure within HDF files, requiring users to traverse the file and open different HDF groups as separate, unrelated objects. Xarray-datatree is a Python package developed to solve the difficulty of traversing HDFs with a hierarchical group structure by creating a tree-like hierarchical data structure in xarray. The tree-like structure allows each group to be accessed once a DataTree object is instantiated. The migration of xarray-datatree into the xarray core library will reduce barriers to accessing Earth science data by eliminating the need to understand and traverse the specific hierarchy of a grouped HDF file.

Method for forming an electrical interconnect

A method including forming an interconnect in a metal member. The interconnect includes multiple repeating, nested V-shaped structures forming a continuous central portion. A vertex of each of the multiple repeating, nested V-shaped structures adjoins a next vertex of a next V-shaped structure of the multiple repeating, nested V-shaped structures. The method further includes separating the interconnect from the metal member.
