Gain optimization with nonlinear controls

An algorithm has been developed for the analysis and design of controls for nonlinear systems. The technical approach is to use statistical linearization to model the nonlinear dynamics of a system. A covariance analysis is performed to determine the behavior of the dynamical system and a quadratic cost function. Expressions for the cost function and its derivatives are determined so that numerical optimization techniques can be applied to determine optimal feedback laws. The primary application for this report is centered about the design of controls for nominally linear systems but where the controls are saturated or limited by fixed constraints. The analysis is general however and numerical computation requires only that the specific nonlinearity be considered in the analysis.

Implementation of Nonlinear Control Laws for an Optical Delay Line

This paper discusses the implementation of a globally stable nonlinear controller algorithm for the Real-Time Interferometer Control System Testbed (RICST) brassboard optical delay line (ODL) developed for the Interferometry Technology Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The control methodology essentially employs loop shaping to implement linear control laws. while utilizing nonlinear elements as means of ameliorating the effects of actuator saturation in its coarse, main, and vernier stages. The linear controllers were implemented as high-order digital filters and were designed using Bode integral techniques to determine the loop shape. The nonlinear techniques encompass the areas of exact linearization, anti-windup control, nonlinear rate limiting and modal control. Details of the design procedure are given as well as data from the actual mechanism.

A design methodology for nonlinear systems containing parameter uncertainty: Application to nonlinear controller design

A design methodology capable of dealing with nonlinear systems, such as a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS), containing parameter uncertainty is discussed. The methodology was applied to the design of discrete time nonlinear controllers. The nonlinear controllers can be used to control either linear or nonlinear systems. Several controller strategies are presented to illustrate the design procedure.

Spacecraft nonlinear control

The feedback linearization technique is applied to the problem of spacecraft attitude control and momentum management with control moment gyros (CMGs). The feedback linearization consists of a coordinate transformation, which transforms the system to a companion form, and a nonlinear feedback control law to cancel the nonlinear dynamics resulting in a linear equivalent model. Pole placement techniques are then used to place the closed-loop poles. The coordinate transformation proposed here evolves from three output functions of relative degree four, three, and two, respectively. The nonlinear feedback control law is presented. Stability in a neighborhood of a controllable torque equilibrium attitude (TEA) is guaranteed and this fact is demonstrated by the simulation results. An investigation of the nonlinear control law shows that singularities exist in the state space outside the neighborhood of the controllable TEA. The nonlinear control law is simplified by a standard linearization technique and it is shown that the linearized nonlinear controller provides a natural way to select control gains for the multiple-input, multiple-output system. Simulation results using the linearized nonlinear controller show good performance relative to the nonlinear controller in the neighborhood of the TEA.

Synthesis of nonlinear control strategies from fuzzy logic control algorithms

Fuzzy control has been recognized as an alternative to conventional control techniques in situations where the plant model is not sufficiently well known to warrant the application of conventional control techniques. Precisely what fuzzy control does and how it does what it does is not quite clear, however. This important issue is discussed and in particular it is shown how a given fuzzy control scheme can resolve into a nonlinear control law and that in those situations the success of fuzzy control hinges on its ability to compensate for nonlinearities in plant dynamics.

Nonlinear system controller design based on domain of attaction: An application to CELSS analysis and control

Nonlinear system controller design based on the domain of attraction is presented. This is particularly suited to investigating Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) models. In particular, the dynamic consequences of changes in the waste storage capacity and system mass, and how information is used for control in CELSS models are examined. The models' high dimensionality and nonlinear state equations make them difficult to analyze by any other technique. The domain of attraction is the region in initial conditions that tend toward an attractor and it is delineated by randomly selecting initial conditions from the region of state space being investigated. Error analysis is done by repeating the domain simulations with independent samples. A refinement of this region is the domain of performance which is the region of initial conditions meeting a performance criteria. In nonlinear systems, local stability does not insure stability over a larger region. The domain of attraction marks out this stability region; hence, it can be considered a measure of a nonlinear system's ability to recovery from state perturbations. Considering random perturbations, the minimum radius of the domain is a measure of the magnitude of perturbations for which recovery is guaranteed. Design of both linear and nonlinear controllers are shown. Three CELSS models, with 9 to 30 state variable, are presented. Measures of the domain of attraction are used to show the global behavior of these models under a variety of design and controller scenarios.

Neural networks for function approximation in nonlinear control

Two neural network architectures are compared with a classical spline interpolation technique for the approximation of functions useful in a nonlinear control system. A standard back-propagation feedforward neural network and a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) neural network are presented, and their results are compared with a B-spline interpolation procedure that is updated using recursive least-squares parameter identification. Each method is able to accurately represent a one-dimensional test function. Tradeoffs between size requirements, speed of operation, and speed of learning indicate that neural networks may be practical for identification and adaptation in a nonlinear control environment.

A system identification model for adaptive nonlinear control

A system identification model that combines generalized-spline function approximation with a nonlinear control system is described. The complete control system contains three main elements: a nonlinear-inverse-dynamic control law that depends on a comprehensive model of the plant, a state estimator whose outputs drive the control law, and a function approximation scheme that models the system dynamics. The system-identification task, which combines an extended Kalman filter with a function approximator modeled as an artificial neural network, is considered. The results of an application of the identification techniques to a nonlinear transport aircraft model are presented.

Suboptimal design of a class of nonlinear controllers.

A systematic design procedure is presented for suboptimal nonlinear controller synthesis. Such a control yields faster response characteristics than are normally possible with a linear controller. The technique is geared to single-input linear systems where excursions of one state variable are of more importance than others. Design steps are formulated in terms of readily applicable algebraic equations. The proposed method is applied to several design examples and the advantages are shown by comparison with the results obtained from existing techniques.

The Kronecker indices of affine-nonlinear control systems

The Kronecker indices of smooth affine-nonlinear control systems presently defined are noted to determine the collection of controllable linear systems that are obtainable on the basis of local feedback equivalences and state-space reductions. Because attention is given to the invariants of systems under equivalences, and the behavior of these invariants under mappings that arise from state submersions, local representations of systems are used wherever possible to render cases more accessible.
