Entanglement Enabled Intensity Interferometry of different wavelengths of light

Highlights: • We use quantum entanglement to erase the color of photons for a new imaging method. • Can achieve higher resolution imaging by accessing hidden phase information. • We detail practical experimental designs to implement our theoretical protocols. We propose methods to perform intensity interferometry of photons having two different wavelengths. Distinguishable particles typically cannot interfere with each other, but we overcome that obstacle by processing the particles via entanglement and projection so that they lead to the same final state at the detection apparatus. Specifically, we discuss how quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals can be used to convert a quantum superposition of light of different wavelengths onto a common wavelength, while preserving the phase information essential for their meaningful interference. We thereby gain access to a host of new observables, which can probe subtle frequency correlations and entanglement. Further, we generalize the van Cittert–Zernike formula for the intensity interferometry of extended sources, demonstrate how our proposal supports enhanced resolution of sources with different spectral character, and suggest potential applications.

Flat nonlinear optics with intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces

Nonlinear intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces produce some of the strongest second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses reported for condensed matter systems at infrared frequencies. These metasurfaces are fabricated as two-dimensional arrays of nanoresonators from multi-quantum-well semiconductor heterostructures, designed to produce strong nonlinear responses associated with intersubband transitions. By optimally coupling the optical modes of the nanoresonators to vertically polarized intersubband transitions in semiconductor heterostructures, one can boost the nonlinear response associated with intersubband transitions, make intersubband transitions interact with free-space radiation at normal incidence, and hence produce optically thin flat nonlinear optical elements compatible with free-space optical setups. As a result of the strong nonlinear response in these systems, significant nonlinear conversion efficiencies (>0.1 %) can be attained in deeply subwavelength optical films using modest pumping intensities of only 10–100 kW/cm 2 . Subwavelength metasurface thickness relaxes phase-matching constraints limiting the operation of bulk nonlinear crystals. Furthermore, the amplitude and phase of the nonlinear optical response in intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces can be tailored for a specific pump wavelength and a nonlinear process of interest through the co-optimization of quantum engineering of electron states in semiconductor heterostructures and photonic engineering of the metasurface nanoresonators design. Additionally, an applied voltage can dynamically control the amplitude and phase of the nonlinear optical response at a nanoresonator level. Here, we review the current state of the art in this rapidly expanding field, focusing on nonlinear processes supporting second-harmonic generation, saturable absorption, and optical power limiting.

Vacuum deposition of χ(2) nonlinear organic single crystal films on silicon

Integrating second order nonlinear (χ(2)) optical materials on chip is an ongoing challenge for Si photonics. Noncentrosymmetric molecular crystals have the potential to deliver high χ(2) nonlinearity with good thermal stability, but so far have been limited to growth from solution or the melt, which are both difficult to control and scale up in manufacturing. Here, we show that large (>100 μm) single crystal domains of the nonlinear molecule 2-[3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene] malononitrile (OH1) can be grown monolithically on either glass or Si via vacuum evaporation, followed by a short thermal annealing step. The crystallites are tens of nanometer thick and exhibit strong second harmonic generation with their primary χ(2) tensor component lying predominantly in plane. Remarkably, we find that a single domain can grow uninterrupted through nearby channels etched on a Si wafer, which may provide a path to integrate OH1 on Si or Si3N4 waveguides for a broad range of χ(2)-based photonic integrated circuit functionality.

457-nm radiation source based on a diode laser for precision spectroscopy of magnesium atoms

We report on the development of a highly stable source of 457-nm radiation based on a diode laser and a tapered amplifier operating in a double-pass scheme. The diode laser frequency was stabilised by a high-Q reference Fabry – Perot interferometer and doubled in a PPSLT nonlinear crystal placed in an enhancement cavity. At a maximum output power of 200 mW at a wavelength of 457 nm, the laser linewidth was less than 5 kHz. The radiation source operation was demonstrated in experiments on precision spectroscopy of cold magnesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap. (lasers)

Symmetric second-harmonic generation in sub-wavelength periodically poled thin film lithium niobate

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second-harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with the poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this paper, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in a thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370 nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but could also enable submicron ferrolectric domain structures to be leveraged in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

Generation of ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet radiation

The paper describes nonlinear optical techniques that use phase-matched mixtures of metal vapors and inert gases, or, in certain cases, only inert gases for the generation of ultraviolet radiation. These systems are transparent where nonlinear crystals are opaque and their high ionization permits optical power densities of 10 to the 10 or 10 to the 11 W/sq cm to be utilized. An experiment designed to convert incident 1.064 micron radiation to 3547 A radiation is described as are experiments designed to generate vacuum ultraviolet at 1773, 1520, 1182 and 887 A. Theoretical considerations on the use of this nonlinear optical technique for the generation of soft X-rays are presented and the construction of a vacuum ultraviolet holographic grating with a fringe spacing of 836 A is reported on.

Colossal Terahertz Emission with Ultrafast Tunability Based on Van der Waals Ferroelectric NbOI 2

Abstract Terahertz (THz) technology is critical for quantum material physics, biomedical imaging, ultrafast electronics, and next‐generation wireless communications. However, standing in the way of widespread applications is the scarcity of efficient ultrafast THz sources with on‐demand fast modulation and easy on‐chip integration capability. Here the discovery of colossal THz emission is reported from a van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectric semiconductor NbOI 2 . Using THz emission spectroscopy, a THz generation efficiency an order of magnitude higher than that of ZnTe, a standard nonlinear crystal for ultrafast THz generation is observed. The underlying generation mechanisms associated are further uncovered with its large ferroelectric polarization by studying the THz emission dependence on excitation wavelength, incident polarization, and fluence. Moreover, the ultrafast coherent amplification and annihilation of the THz emission and associated coherent phonon oscillations by employing a double‐pump scheme are demonstrated. These findings combined with first‐principles calculations, inform a new understanding of the THz light–matter interaction in emergent vdW ferroelectrics and pave the way to develop high‐performance THz devices on them for quantum materials sensing and ultrafast electronics.

Beating absorption in solid-state high harmonics

Since the new millennium coherent extreme ultra-violet and soft x-ray radiation has revolutionized the understanding of dynamical physical, chemical and biological systems at the electron’s natural timescale. Unfortunately, coherent laser-based upconversion of infrared photons to vacuum-ultraviolet and soft x-ray high-order harmonics in gaseous, liquid and solid targets is notoriously inefficient. In dense nonlinear media, the limiting factor is strong re-absorption of the generated high-energy photons. Here we overcome this limitation by generating high-order harmonics from a periodic array of thin one-dimensional crystalline silicon ridge waveguides. Adding vacuum gaps between the ridges avoids the high absorption loss of the bulk and results in a ~ 100-fold increase of the extraction depth. As the grating period is varied, each high harmonic shows a different and marked modulation, indicating their waveguiding in the vacuum slots with reduced absorption. Looking ahead, our results enable bright on-chip coherent short-wavelength sources and may extend the usable spectral range of traditional nonlinear crystals to their absorption windows. Potential applications include on-chip chemically-sensitive spectro-nanoscopy.

Experimental generation of polarization entanglement from spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by spatiotemporally highly incoherent light

Here, we investigate the cross influence of the pump coherence on the entanglement produced from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in different degrees of freedom (DOFs). We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization entanglement from SPDC pumped by a spatiotemporally highly incoherent (STHI) light-emitting diode. Our quantum state tomography measurements using multimode collection fibers to avoid postselection yield a two-qubit state with the concurrence of 0.531 ± 0.006 and purity of 0.647 ± 0.005, in excellent agreement with our theoretically predicted concurrence of 0.552 and purity of 0.652. We find that using an STHI pump reduces the entanglement and purity of the output polarization two-qubit state due to a coupling between the spatiotemporal and polarization DOFs introduced by the birefringence and dispersion of the nonlinear crystal. The viability of SPDC with STHI pumps is important for two reasons: (i) STHI sources are ubiquitous and available at a wider range of wavelengths than lasers, and (ii) the generated STHI polarization-entangled two-photon states could potentially be useful in long-distance quantum communication schemes due to their robustness to scattering.

Seamless aperture and length enlargement of single crystalline materials for high-energy laser applications

An optically seamless method for increasing the aperture or length of nonlinear materials has been developed, which is suitable for optics in high energy laser systems and other applications. Differences between aperture and length scaling are analyzed. Bonding of component pairs of a nonlinear crystal, lithium tri-borate, is experimentally demonstrated by GAMDAN Optics Inc. and tested at the Laboratory of Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester. Here, a bonded crystal is shown to deliver beam quality and second harmonic conversion efficiency that is equivalent to that of a monolithic crystal of similar dimensions.

Lightwave-electronic harmonic frequency mixing

Electronic frequency mixers are fundamental building blocks of electronic systems. Harmonic frequency mixing in particular enables broadband electromagnetic signal analysis across octaves of spectrum using a single local oscillator. However, conventional harmonic frequency mixers do not operate beyond hundreds of gigahertz to a few terahertz. If extended to the petahertz scale in a compact and scalable form, harmonic mixers would enable field-resolved optical signal analysis spanning octaves of spectra in a monolithic device without the need for frequency conversion using nonlinear crystals. Here, we demonstrate lightwave-electronic harmonic frequency mixing beyond 0.350 PHz using plasmonic nanoantennas. We demonstrate that the mixing process enables complete, field-resolved detection of spectral content far outside that of the local oscillator, greatly extending the range of detectable frequencies compared to conventional heterodyning techniques. Our work has important implications for applications where optical signals of interest exhibit coherent femtosecond-scale dynamics spanning multiple harmonics.

Quantum-enhanced phase imaging without coincidence counting

Quantitative phase imaging provides a way to image transparent objects, such as biological cells, and measure their thickness. We report on a phase-imaging method that achieves twice the phase shift and approximately 1.7 times the spatial resolution of an equivalent spatially and temporally coherent classical quantitative phase-imaging system by using quantum interference between successive spontaneous parametric downconversion events in a nonlinear crystal. Furthermore, our method is approximately 1000 times faster than imaging the parametric downconversion photons in coincidence, which requires measurement times on the order of tens of hours. Our method may be useful for imaging sensitive transparent objects that require low illumination intensities at near-infrared and longer illumination wavelengths, such as photosensitive biological samples.

Diode pumped solid-state laser oscillators for spectroscopic applications

The rapid improvement in diode laser pump sources has led to the recent progress in diode laser pumped solid state lasers. To date, electrical efficiencies of greater than 10 percent were demonstrated. As diode laser costs decrease with increased production volume, diode laser and diode laser array pumped solid state lasers will replace the traditional flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG laser sources. The use of laser diode array pumping of slab geometry lasers will allow efficient, high peak and average power solid state laser sources to be developed. Perhaps the greatest impact of diode laser pumped solid state lasers will be in spectroscopic applications of miniature, monolithic devices. Single-stripe diode-pumped operation of a continuous-wave 946 nm Nd:YAG laser with less than 10 m/w threshold was demonstrated. A slope efficiency of 16 percent near threshold was shown with a projected slope efficiency well above a threshold of 34 percent based on results under Rhodamine 6G dye-laser pumping. Nonlinear crystals for second-harmonic generation of this source were evaluated. The KNbO3 and periodically poled LiNbO3 appear to be the most promising.
