Two Neptunium(III) Mellitate Coordination Polymers: Completing the Series Np–Cf of Trans-Uranic An(III) Mellitates

For this work, two neptunium(III) mellitates, 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 9 ·1.5H 2 O (Np-1α) and 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O (Np-1β), have been synthesized from 237 NpCl 4 (dme) 2 by reduction with KC 8 and subsequent reaction with an aqueous solution of mellitic acid (H 6 mell). Characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy confirms that the neptunium is in its +3 oxidation state and both polymorphs are isostructural to the previously reported plutonium mellitates. Of the two morphologies, Np-1α is indefinitely stable in air, while Np-1β slowly oxidizes over several months. This is due to the change in the energy of the metal-ligand charge-transfer absorption exhibited by these compounds attributed to differing numbers of carboxylate bonds to Np(III), where in Np-1β the energy is low enough to result in spontaneous oxidation.

Coupled Cluster Study of the Interactions of AnO 2 , AnO 2 + , and AnO 2 2+ (An = U, Np) with N 2 and CO

We report thermochemical and spectroscopic properties for actinyl complexes involving UO 2 2+/1+/0 and NpO 2 2+/1+/0 with N 2 and CO, together with the UO 2 -O 2 , UO 2 + -O 2 , and UO 2 + -NO complexes, have been studied for the first time using an accurate composite coupled cluster approach. Two general bonding motifs were investigated, end-on (η 1 ) and side-on (η 2 ) relative to the metal center of the actinyls. For end-on CO complexes, both C-coordinated (An-C) and O-coordinated (An-O) structures were examined, with the former always being lower in energy. All of the η 1 complexes were calculated to be stable, with dissociation energies ranging from 2 to 36 kcal/mol, except for that of UO 2 + -O 2 (the η 1 orientation for UO 2 + -NO was not amenable to single reference coupled cluster). In agreement with a previous study, the η 2 structure for UO 2 + -O 2 was calculated to be relatively strongly bound, by 22.3 kcal/mol in this work. The closely related NO complex, however, had a calculated dissociation energy of just 4.0 kcal/mol. The binding energy of O 2 to neutral UO 2 in a η 2 orientation was calculated to be very strong, 75.4 kcal/mol, and strongly resembled a UO 2 + (O 2 – ) complex at equilibrium. The N–N and C–O bonds were found to be somewhat activated for all the side-on (η 2 ) neutral An(IV) complexes, with stretching frequencies of N 2 or CO being red-shifted by as much as 480 cm –1 with a 0.06 Å bond length elongation. Dissociation energies for the η 1 complexes are strongly correlated with the extent of electron transfer from ligand to actinyl. The nature of bonding in the actinyl complexes is examined using natural resonance theory (NRT). The correlation between bonding motif and small molecule activation is in agreement with experiments in condensed phases.

Oscillator strengths and collision strengths for some ions of oxygen and sulphur

Collision strengths for electron impact excitation of the O II, O III, S II and S III for some transitions in the ultraviolet of the type ns(sup 2) np(sup q) yields ns np(sup q +1), ns(sup 2) np(sup q) yields ns(sup 2) np(sup q-1) (n+1)s and 3s2 3p(sup q) yields 352 3p(sup q -1) 3d are calculated in a close coupling approximation for an energy rate up to one million K. Configuration interaction target wave functions which give oscillator strengths accurate to 10% for O II and O III, and 20-30% for S II and S III, are used in the expansion. Accurate knowledge of the electron impact excitation cross sections is particularly significant for a proper interpretation of the combined ultraviolet observations of the Voyager UVS and IUE results on properties of the Io plasma torus.

Ion-Specific Effects on PuO 2 Nanoparticle Aggregation and Dissolution in Concentrated Electrolytes

Hydrolytic PuO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are a dominant aqueous Pu-bearing phase in high ionic strength nuclear wastes, yet their reactivity in nonideal brines remains poorly constrained. We quantify how electrolyte identity and concentration control PuO 2 NP aggregation and ligand-assisted dissolution in acidic, high salinity solutions (NaCl, NaNO 3 , NaClO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , Na 2 C 2 O 4 up to 5 M). A multitechnique workflow combining liquid scintillation counting (operationally defined aqueous [Pu]), scattering/electrokinetic measurements (aggregate size and zeta potential), and spectroscopy (UV–vis, XPS, Raman) resolves electrolyte-dependent partitioning between colloidal and molecular Pu species. Weakly coordinating anions (ClO 4 – , Cl – , NO 3 – ) largely preserve the (aggregated) nanoparticulate fraction but generate distinct dissolved species at high concentration, i.e., Pu(IV)–nitrato complexes in NaNO 3 and Pu(VI)–chloro complexes in NaCl. In contrast, stronger ligands substantially perturb PuO 2 NP stability: sulfate promotes partial dissolution to Pu(IV)–sulfate complexes at low concentration but reduces aqueous [Pu] at higher sulfate levels via secondary Pu(IV) sulfate formation, whereas oxalate drives strong dissolution to aqueous Pu–oxalate complexes. Aged NPs show similar trends with reduced aqueous fractions and more dominant aggregation mechanisms. In conclusion, these spectroscopically constrained speciation data provide a foundation for incorporating PuO 2 NP reactivity into thermodynamic and reactive transport models for high salinity waste and brine environments.
