Optimizing Alabama’s CO 2 Storage in Shelby County (Project OASIS): Task 4.0 Deliverable – Geologic Analysis Report

Project OASIS (Optimizing Alabama’s CO 2 Storage in Shelby County) is a geologic and reservoir characterization study designed to evaluate deep saline formations for potential long-term carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) storage in central Alabama near the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) and Alabama Power’s Plant Gaston. The project centers on the Cambro-Ordovician Knox Group and underlying strata such as the Conasauga and Rome Formations, which were investigated through the drilling of two stratigraphic test wells to obtain electronic well logs, core, and sidewall core plugs. These data provide direct measurements of porosity, permeability, and lithologic variability critical for reservoir characterization. Complementing the well program, a limited 2D seismic survey was acquired to help select the site for Westover #2, and a more regional Seismic Exchange (SEI) seismic survey was licensed and interpreted to define structural and stratigraphic frameworks in a new Static Earth Model (SEM), map reservoir continuity, and identify potential sealing intervals. Integrated with geologic and reservoir modeling, these datasets form the basis for evaluating storage capacity, injectivity, and containment.

OASIS: Offsetting Active Reconstruction Attacks in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) has garnered significant attention for its potential to protect user privacy while enhancing model training efficiency. For that reason, FL has found its use in various domains, from health care to industrial engineering, especially where data cannot be easily exchanged due to sensitive information or privacy laws. However, recent research has demonstrated that FL protocols can be easily compromised by active reconstruction attacks executed by dishonest servers. These attacks involve the malicious modification of global model parameters, allowing the server to obtain a verbatim copy of users' private data by inverting their gradient updates. Tackling this class of attack remains a crucial challenge due to the strong threat model. In this paper, we propose a defense mechanism, namely OASIS, based on image augmentation that effectively counteracts active reconstruction attacks while preserving model performance. We first uncover the core principle of gradient inversion that enables these attacks and theoretically identify the main conditions by which the defense can be robust regardless of the attack strategies. We then construct our defense with image augmentation showing that it can undermine the attack principle. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate the efficacy of the defense mechanism highlighting its feasibility as a solution.

Perennial Antarctic lake ice: an oasis for life in a polar desert

The permanent ice covers of Antarctic lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys develop liquid water inclusions in response to solar heating of internal aeolian-derived sediments. The ice sediment particles serve as nutrient (inorganic and organic)-enriched microzones for the establishment of a physiologically and ecologically complex microbial consortium capable of contemporaneous photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, and decomposition. The consortium is capable of physically and chemically establishing and modifying a relatively nutrient- and organic matter-enriched microbial "oasis" embedded in the lake ice cover.

OASIS Observation and Analysis of Smectic Islands in Space

The Observation and Analysis of Smectic Islands in Space (OASIS) project comprises a series of experiments that will probe the interfacial and hydrodynamic behavior of freely suspended liquid crystal films in space. These are the thinnest known stable condensed phase structures, making them ideal for studies of fluctuation and interface phenomena. The experiments seek to verify theories of coarsening dynamics, hydrodynamic flow, relaxation of hydrodynamic perturbations, and hydrodynamic interactions of a near two-dimensional structure. The effects of introducing islands or droplets on a very thin bubble will be studied, both as controllable inclusions that modify the flow and as markers of flow.

On-orbit/On-surface Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (OSAM) Architecture Simulation System (OASiS)

On-orbit/on-surface servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (OSAM) –recently renamed“in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing”(ISAM) –will aid in the development of vital research-enabling structuresin space, such as the In-space Assembled Telescope, the Lunar Gateway, and the Lunar Safe Haven. As these structures become larger and more complex, developers will need new methods for verifying and validating their OSAM mission architectures at full-scale prior to launch, without paying for extensive facility upgrades or additional hardware prototypes. Under the OSAM Architecture Simulation System (OASiS) project, modular OSAM modeling and simulation capabilities were developed to help rapidly prototype and evaluate OSAM technologies and operational concepts.Theywerethenusedto demonstrate and evaluate data from the simulation of a simpleOSAM operation against ananaloghardware setup. Using collected test data, the teamevaluatedthe accuracy of the simulation environment against the behavior of real hardwareandgainedinsight on how to further improve OSAM modeling and simulation. With thesenewcapabilities and many more to come, developers will be able to test complex OSAM operations on multiple scales, iterate on technology designs faster, achieve higher operational accuracy, and ultimately reduce mission development costs. A comprehensive, high-fidelity simulation environment will ensure the successful servicing, assembly, and manufacturing of structures that help us study and explore our universe.

Sedimentology and geochemistry of a perennially ice-covered epishelf lake in Bunger Hills Oasis, East Antarctica

A process-oriented study was carried out in White Smoke lake, Bunger Hills, East Antarctica, a perennially ice-covered (1.8 to 2.8 m thick) epishelf (tidally-forced) lake. The lake water has a low conductivity and is relatively well mixed. Sediments are transferred from the adjacent glacier to the lake when glacier ice surrounding the sediment is sublimated at the surface and replaced by accumulating ice from below. The lake bottom at the west end of the lake is mostly rocky with a scant sediment cover. The east end contains a thick sediment profile. Grain size and delta 13C increase with sediment depth, indicating a more proximal glacier in the past. Sedimentary 210Pb and 137Cs signals are exceptionally strong, probably a result of the focusing effect of the large glacial catchment area. The post-bomb and pre-bomb radiocarbon reservoirs are c. 725 14C yr and c. 1950 14C yr, respectively. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the east end of the lake is >3 ka BP, while photographic evidence and the absence of sediment cover indicate that the west end has formed only over the last century. Our results indicate that the southern ice edge of Bunger Hills has been relatively stable with only minor fluctuations (on the scale of hundreds of metres) over the last 3000 years.

Astrometric discovery of GJ 802b : in the Brown Dwarf Oasis?

The Stellar Planet Survey is an ongoing astrometric search for giant planets and brown dwarfs around a sample of ~30 M dwarfs. We have discovered several low-mass companions by measuring the motion of our target stars relative to their reference frames. The lowest mass discovery thus far is GJ 802b, a companion to the M5 dwarf GJ 802A. The orbital period is 3.14 +/-0:03 yr, the system mass is 0:214 +/- 0:045 M(circled dot operator), and the semimajor axis is 1:28+/- 0:10 AU or 81 + 6 mas. Imaging observations indicate that GJ 802b is likely to be a brow with the astrometrically determined mass 0:058 +/- 0:021 M(circled dot operator) (1 (sigma) limits). The remaining uncertainty in the orbit is the eccentricity that is now loosely constrained. We dis the system age limits the mass and the prospects of further narrowing the mass range when e is more precisely determined.
