Hemodynamic and autonomic nervous system responses to mixed meal ingestion in healthy young and old subjects and dysautonomic patients with postprandial hypotension

BACKGROUND. Although postprandial hypotension is a common cause of falls and syncope in elderly persons and in patients with autonomic insufficiency, the pathophysiology of this disorder remains unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS. We examined the hemodynamic, splanchnic blood pool, plasma norepinephrine (NE), and heart rate (HR) power spectra responses to a standardized 400-kcal mixed meal in 11 healthy young (age, 26 +/- 5 years) and nine healthy elderly (age, 80 +/- 5 years) subjects and 10 dysautonomic patients with symptomatic postprandial hypotension (age, 65 +/- 16 years). Cardiac and splanchnic blood pools were determined noninvasively by radionuclide scans, and forearm vascular resistance was determined using venous occlusion plethysmography. In healthy young and old subjects, splanchnic blood volume increased, but supine blood pressure remained unchanged after the meal. In both groups, HR increased and systemic vascular resistance remained stable. Forearm vascular resistance and cardiac index increased after the meal in elderly subjects, whereas these responses were highly variable and of smaller magnitude in the young. Young subjects demonstrated postprandial increases in low-frequency HR spectral power, representing cardiac sympatho-excitation, but plasma NE remained unchanged. In elderly subjects, plasma NE increased after the meal but without changes in the HR power spectrum. Patients with dysautonomia had a large postprandial decline in blood pressure associated with no change in forearm vascular resistance, a fall in systemic vascular resistance, and reduction in left ventricular end diastolic volume index. HR increased in these patients but without changes in plasma NE or the HR power spectrum. CONCLUSIONS. 1) In healthy elderly subjects, the maintenance of blood pressure homeostasis after food ingestion is associated with an increase in HR, forearm vascular resistance, cardiac index, and plasma NE. In both young and old, systemic vascular resistance is maintained. 2) Dysautonomic patients with postprandial hypotension fail to maintain systemic vascular resistance after a meal. This impairment in vascular response to meal ingestion may underlie the development of postprandial hypotension. 3) The measurement of mean HR or plasma NE does not adequately characterize autonomic cardiac control. Power spectral analysis suggests an impairment in the postprandial autonomic modulation of HR in healthy elderly and dysautonomic subjects, possibly predisposing to hypotension when vascular compensation is inadequate.

Looking for Interacting Binaries in Old Open Clusters

We requested a 12 ks observation of the old open cluster NGC7142 with the aim to investigate the population of interacting binaries, and compare the properties with those of interacting binaries in other old open clusters. Unfortunately, the observation suffered from long periods of background flaring, and as a result the effective exposure time was shortened to only approximately 25% of the planned exposure. The sensitivity to detect sources in the cluster was therefore much reduced, hampering a useful comparison with other clusters observed with Chandra and XMM. We detect 5 sources (all less than 300 counts) in the full field of view of the detectors; based on the large separations from the cluster center, we expect that at least 3-4 are not associated with the cluster. A brief paper that reports the results is in preparation.

Spitzer IRS Spectroscopy of the 10 Myr-Old EF Cha Debris Disk: Evidence for Phyllosilicate-Rich Dust in the Terrestrial Zone

We describe Spitzer IRS spectroscopic observations of the approx. 10 Myr-old star, EF Chao Compositional modeling of the spectra from 5 micron to 35 micron confirms that it is surrounded by a luminous debris disk with L(sub D)/L(sub *) approx. 10(exp -3), containing dust with temperatures between 225 K and 430 K characteristic of the terrestrial zone. The EF Cha spectrum shows evidence for many solid-state features, unlike most cold, low-luminosity debris disks but like some other 10-20 Myr-old luminous, warm debris disks (e.g. HD 113766A). The EF Cha debris disk is unusually rich in a species or combination of species whose emissivities resemble that of finely-powdered, laboratory-measured phyllosilicate species (talc, saponite, and smectite), which are likely produced by aqueous alteration of primordial anhydrous rocky materials. The dust and, by inference, the parent bodies of the debris also contain abundant amorphous silicates and metal sulfides, and possibly water ice. The dust's total olivine to pyroxene ratio of approx. 2 also provides evidence of aqueous alteration. The large mass volume of grains with sizes comparable to or below the radiation blow-out limit implies that planetesimals may be colliding at a rate high enough to yield the emitting dust but not so high as to devolatize the planetesimals via impact processing. Because phyllosilicates are produced by the interactions between anhydrous rock and warm, reactive water, EF Cha's disk is a likely signpost for water delivery to the terrestrial zone of a young planetary system.

Estimating Soil Moisture in a Boreal Old Jack Pine Forest

Polarimetric L- and P-band AIRSAR data, corresponding model simulations, and classification algorithms have shown that in a boreal old jack pine (OJP) stand, the principal scattering mechanism responsible for radar backscatter is the double-bounce mechanism between the tree trunks and the ground.

The Old Imbrium Hypothesis

It is proposed that the order of lunar events was such that the Imbrium event predates the formation of the lunar rock type called KREEP. This hypothesis is used to explain the distribution of KREEP in the regions of Imbrium ejecta and the location of KREEP within the Imbrium and Procellarum mare regions. Model ages of KREEP materials have been previously interpreted to mean that their 'formation' age (time of initial extrusion) is about 4.3 to 4.4 AE. Consequently it is suggested that the Imbrium impact was before 4.3 to 4.4 AE rather than at about 3.9 AE, as is currently believed. This Old Imbrium Hypothesis is not yet proven, but seems to be consistent with a large variety of basic lunar observations.

Identification of 180 million years old, probably unchanged melanine

The comparison of the infrared spectra of recent sepia melanine and of the content of the ink sac of fossilized cuttlefish indicates that the 180 million years old substance is unchanged melanine. Both substances behave identically on heating. Other procedures for identification of melanine are surveyed critically.

Detection of a new extended soft X-ray source H1538-32 - A possible old supernova remnant

The discovery in the Lupus region of a new, extended soft X-ray source, H1538-32, is reported, having a distance of approximately 340 pc, and a luminosity of 1 to 2 x 10 to the 34th ergs/sec. The observed energy spectrum of the source is well fitted either by a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with Gaunt factor but without line emission, or by a coronal plasma model which includes the X-ray emission lines of various elements and the continuum as outlined by Raymond and Smith (1977). On the basis of the extended nature of the source and its thermal spectrum, it is suggested that H1538-32 may be an old supernova remnant.

Detection of periodic light variations in the old nova V 603 Aquilae /1918/

Periodic visible light variations of the old nova V 603 Aql (1918) were detected with the Fine Error Sensor Instrument (FES) aboard the IUE satellite. Continuous observations were carried out during more than two complete cycles. The light curve shows a broad maximum and a pronounced minimum which was covered three times, and is tentatively interpreted as an eclipse of the accretion disk around the white dwarf by the late main sequence component.

Ultraviolet spectroscopy of old novae and symbiotic stars

The IUE spectra are presented for two old novae and for two of the symbiotic variables. Prominent emission line spectra are revealed as a continuum whose appearance is effected by the system inclination. These data provide evidence for hot companions in the symbiotic stars, making plausible the binary model for these peculiar stars. Recent IUE spectra of dwarf novae provide additional support for the existence of optically thick accretion disks in active binary systems. The ultraviolet data of the eclipsing dwarf novae EX Hya and BV Cen appear flatter than for the noneclipsing systems, an effect which could be ascribed to the system inclination.

Amino acids and hydrocarbons approximately 3,800-Myr old in the Isua rocks, southwestern Greenland

Results of an analysis of amino acids and hydrocarbons found in the Isua banded iron formation, which contains the oldest known rocks on earth, are discussed. Similarities are pointed out between the relative amino acid abundances of the Isua rocks and those of lichens found on their surfaces, and a lack of substantial racemization indicated by the low D/L ratios in the 3800-million year old rock samples is noted. Experimental results showing the possibility of amino acid diffusion from lichens into the rocks are presented. Comparisons of the Isua rock amino acid D/L ratios with those reported for samples from other regions indicates that none of the Isua amino acids are older than a few tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand years. Analyses of the saturated hydrocarbons of the Isua samples reveals no odd carbon number preference, which may indicate antiquity, however laboratory experiments have shown that amino acids and aromatic and saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons could not have survived the metamorphic history of the Isua rocks. The evidence presented thus suggests that the amino acids and hydrocarbons found are not of the age of the sediments.
