Estimate of Lorentz force effects on charged particles

Thermonuclear (TN) fusion reaction between deutrons are D + D → T + P D + D → 3 He + n where P is the proton, D is the deuteron, T is the triton, n is the neutron, and 3 He is the helion. They are born with high energies (0.82 MeV for 3 He, 1.01 MeV for T, 3.02 MeV for P, and 2.45 MeV for n). The charged particles slow down due to the drag force (stopping power). While slowing down, the charged particles deposit their energy, which may affect the TN burn characteristics. When magnetic field is present, the velocity of the charged particle would be affected due to the Lorentz force, which can affect the stopping of the charged particle. As a consequence, TN burn characteristics may change, Our purpose is to asses the importance of the Lorentz force in stopping of the charged particle, based on a simple comparison between the Lorentz force and stopping power.

Distortions in charged-particle images of laser direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions

Energetic charged particles generated by inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions encode information about the spatial morphology of the hotspot and dense fuel during the time of peak fusion reactions. The knock-on deuteron imager (KoDI) was developed at the Omega Laser Facility to image these particles in order to diagnose low-mode asymmetries in the hotspot and dense fuel layer of cryogenic deuterium–tritium ICF implosions. However, the images collected are distorted in several ways that prevent reconstruction of the deuteron source. In this paper, we describe these distortions and a series of attempts to mitigate or compensate for them. We present several potential mechanisms for the distortions, including a new model for scattering of charged particles in filamentary electric or magnetic fields surrounding the implosion. Particle-tracing is used to create synthetic KoDI data based on the filamentary field model that reproduces the main experimentally observed image distortions. We conclude that the filamentary scattering model best matches the observed image distortions. Finally, we discuss potential impacts of filamentary fields on other charged-particle diagnostics.

System-size dependence of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV for pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions

We present the first systematic comparison of the charged-particle pseudorapidity densities for three widely different collision systems, pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb, at the top energy of the Large Hadron Collider ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV) measured over a wide pseudorapidity range (-3.5 < η < 5), the widest possible among the four experiments at that facility. The systematic uncertainties are minimised since the measurements are recorded by the same experimental apparatus (ALICE). The distributions for p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions are determined as a function of the centrality of the collisions, while results from pp collisions are reported for inelastic events with at least one charged particle at midrapidity. The charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are, under simple and robust assumptions, transformed to charged-particle rapidity densities. This allows for the calculation and the presentation of the evolution of the width of the rapidity distributions and of a lower bound on the Bjorken energy density, as a function of the number of participants in all three collision systems. We find a decreasing width of the particle production, and roughly a smooth ten fold increase in the energy density, as the system size grows, which is consistent with a gradually higher dense phase of matter

Studying charm hadronisation into baryons with azimuthal correlations of Λ$^+_c$ with charged particles in pp collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The distribution of angular correlations between prompt charm hadrons and primary charged particles in pp collisions is sensitive to the charm-quark hadronisation process. In this letter, charm-baryon correlations are measured for the first time by studying the azimuthal-angle difference between charged particles and prompt Λ$^+_c$ baryons produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV, with the ALICE detector. Λ$^+_c$ baryons are reconstructed at midrapidity (|𝑦| < 0.5) in the transverse-momentum interval 3 < 𝑝 T < 16 GeV/𝑐, and correlated with charged particles with 𝑝 T > 0.3 GeV/𝑐 and pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.8. For 3 < 𝑝$^{Λ{^{+}_{c} ,D}}_{T}$ < 5 GeV/𝑐, the comparison with published measurements of D-meson and charged-particle correlations in the same collision system hints at a larger number of low-momentum particles associated with Λ$^+_c$-baryon triggers than with D-meson triggers, both in the collinear and opposite directions with respect to the trigger particle. These differences can be quantified by the comparison of the properties of the near- and away-side correlation peaks, and are not reproduced by predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, generally underpredicting the associated particle yields at 𝑝$^{assoc}_{T}$ < 1 GeV/𝑐. This tension between Λ$^+_c$-baryon and D-meson associated peak yields could suggest a modified fragmentation of the charm quark, or a different hadronisation process, when a charm baryon is produced in the final state.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle intra-jet properties in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton–proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region (|η| < 0.9) using the sequential recombination anti-k T algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the trans verse momentum (p T ) interval 5–110 GeV/c. The high multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintilla tor detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet p T in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation function variables z ch and ξ ch are measured for different jet-p T intervals. Jet-p T independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-z ch values. The observed “hump-backed plateau” structure in the ξ ch distribution indicates suppression of low-p T particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmen tation probability of low-z ch particles accompanied by a suppression of high-zch particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more promi nent for low-p T jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet p T . These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation.

In situ calibration of charged particle spectrometers on the OMEGA Laser Facility using 241 Am and 226 Ra sources

Charged particle spectrometry is a critical diagnostic to study inertial-confinement-fusion plasmas and high energy density plasmas. The OMEGA Laser Facility has two fixed magnetic charged particle spectrometers (CPSs) to measure MeV-ions. In situ calibration of these spectrometers was carried out using 241 Am and 226 Ra alpha emitters. The alpha emission spectrum from the sources was measured independently using surface-barrier detectors (SBDs). The energy dispersion and broadening of the CPS systems were determined by comparing the CPS measured alpha spectrum to that of the SBD. The calibration method significantly constrains the energy dispersion, which was previously obtained through the measurement of charged particle fusion products. Overall, a small shift of 100 keV was observed between previous and the calibration done in this work.

Search for heavy long-lived charged particles with level-1 trigger scouting data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV

A search for heavy long-lived charged particles at the LHC is presented. Particles interacting with the CMS muon detector across several bunch crossings are searched for using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV collected with the CMS detector in 2024, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb$^{-1}$. This is the first search relying on the novel level-1 trigger scouting data set collected without any trigger selection, allowing correlations between bunch crossings to be analyzed. The results are interpreted as upper limits on the cross sections of several benchmark processes with pair production of heavy long-lived charged particles. Upper limits on the fiducial cross section of a heavy long-lived charged particle with $p_\mathrm{T}$$\gt$ 500 GeV and $\lvertη\rvert$$\lt$ 0.83 are also set in different ranges of $β=v/c$. This analysis is a crucial proof of concept for the level-1 trigger data scouting system and complements existing searches for heavy long-lived charged particles by extending the sensitivity to lower $β$ values.

Forward rapidity $J/ψ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The production of J/ψ is measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity at forward rapidity in proton-proton (pp) collisions at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed via their decay into dimuons in the rapidity interval (2.5 < y < 4.0), whereas the charged-particle multiplicity density (dN ch /dη) is measured at midrapidity (|η| <; 1). The production rate as a function of multiplicity is reported as the ratio of the yield in a given multiplicity interval to the multiplicity-integrated one. This observable shows a linear increase with charged-particle multiplicity normalized to the corresponding average value for inelastic events (dN ch /dη/$\langle$dN ch /dη$\rangle$), at both the colliding energies. Measurements are compared with available ALICE results at midrapidity and theoretical model calculations. First measurement of the mean transverse momentum ($\langle$p T $\rangle$) of J/ψ in pp collisions exhibits an increasing trend as a function of dN ch /dη/$\langle$dN ch /dη$\rangle$ showing a saturation towards high charged-particle multiplicities.

Pseudo-rapidity distributions of charged particles in asymmetric collisions using Tsallis thermodynamics

Abstract The pseudo-rapidity distributions of the charged particles produced in the asymmetric collision systems p+Al, p+Au and$$^3$$ 3 He+Au at$$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}} = 200$$ s NN = 200 GeV are evaluated in the framework of a fireball model with Tsallis thermodynamics. The fireball model assumes that the experimentally measured particles are produced by fireballs following the Tsallis distribution and it can effectively describe the experimental data. Our results as well as previous results for d+Au collisions at$$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}} = 200$$ s NN = 200 GeV and p+Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}} = 5.02$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV validate that the fireball model based on Tsallis thermodynamics can provide a universal framework for pseudo-rapidity distribution of the charged particles produced in asymmetric collision systems. We predict the centrality dependence of the total charged particle multiplicity in the p+Al, p+Au and$$^3$$ 3 He+Au collisions. Additionally, the dependences of the fireball model parameters ($$y_{0a}$$ y 0 a ,$$y_{0A}$$ y 0 A ,$$\sigma _{a}$$ σ a and$$\sigma _{A}$$ σ A ) on the centrality and system size are studied.

Measurement of ψ (2S) production as a function of charged-particle pseudorapidity density in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p–Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV with ALICE at the LHC

Production of inclusive charmonia in pp collisions at center-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV and p–Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV is studied as a function of charged-particle pseudorapidity density with ALICE. Ground and excited charmonium states (J/ψ, ψ(2S)) are measured from their dimuon decays in the interval of rapidity in the center-of-mass frame 2.5 < y cms < 4.0 for pp collisions, and 2.03 < y cms < 3.53 and –4.46 < y cms < –2.96 for p–Pb collisions. The charged-particle pseudorapidity density is measured around midrapidity (|η| < 1.0). In pp collisions, the measured charged-particle multiplicity extends to about six times the average value, while in p-Pb collisions at forward (backward) rapidity a multiplicity corresponding to about three (four) times the average is reached. The ψ(2S) yield increases with the charged-particle pseudorapidity density. The ratio of ψ(2S) over J/ψ yield does not show a significant multiplicity dependence in either colliding system, suggesting a similar behavior of J/ψ and ψ(2S) yields with respect to charged-particle pseudorapidity density. Results for the ψ(2S) yield and its ratio with respect to J/ψ agree with available model calculations.

Two bright, optically clear, intrinsic fast-neutron and charged-particle detector materials for neutron imaging and other applications

Two optically clear, bright, scintillating ZnS materials have been identified that, like previous opaque ZnS scintillators, are excellent charged particle detectors. We show that ZnS is a good fast-neutron-to charged-particle converter making optically clear ZnS an intrinsic fast-neutron detector that does not require layering or mixing of converter materials and scintillator materials, and removes the limitations imposed by opaque ZnS scintillator materials used for more than a century. Thermal neutron detection using optically clear 6 LiF or 10 BN and clear ZnS may benefit from improved spatial resolution and light transmission. Properties and tests of clear scintillating ZnS are described. Fast-neutron imaging applications benefit from increased efficiency of these scintillators, minimal scattering in the scintillator, and increased useful detector volume. Charged particle and fast-neutron detectors have numerous applications in nuclear non-proliferation and security, nuclear and particle physics, and non-destructive testing and environmental measurements.

Pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles in pp($\bar p$), p(d)A and AA collisions using Tsallis thermodynamics

The pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles measured in p + p($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions for energies ranging from $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{N}}}=23.6$ GeV to 13 TeV and A + A collisions at RHIC and LHC are investigated in the fireball model with Tsallis thermodynamics. We assume that the rapidity axis is populated with fireballs following q-Gaussian distribution and the charged particles follow the Tsallis distribution in the fireball. We also extend the fireball model to asymmetric collision systems, i.e. d + Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{N}}}=200$ GeV and p + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{N}}}=5.02$ TeV, by taking into account the asymmetric geometry configuration. The model can fit the experimental data well for all the collision systems and centralities investigated. The collision energy and centrality dependence of the model parameters for the symmetric (asymmetric) collision system, i.e. the central position y 0 (y 0a , y 0A ) and its width σ (σ a , σ A ) of the fireball distribution, are also investigated and discussed. Furthermore, our results suggest that the fireball model with Tsallis thermodynamics can be used as a universal framework for the pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles in high energy collisions at RHIC and LHC.

Review of the first charged-particle transport coefficient comparison workshop

We present the results of the first Charged-Particle Transport Coefficient Code Comparison Workshop, which was held in Albuquerque, NM October 4–6, 2016. In this first workshop, scientists from eight institutions and four countries gathered to compare calculations of transport coefficients including thermal and electrical conduction, electron–ion coupling, inter-ion diffusion, ion viscosity, and charged particle stopping powers. In this paper, we give general background on Coulomb coupling and computational expense, review where some transport coefficients appear in hydrodynamic equations, and present the submitted data. Large variations are found when either the relevant Coulomb coupling parameter is large or computational expense causes difficulties. Understanding the general accuracy and uncertainty associated with such transport coefficients is important for quantifying errors in hydrodynamic simulations of inertial confinement fusion and high-energy density experiments.

Pseudorapidity densities of charged particles with transverse momentum thresholds in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ and 13 TeV

The pseudorapidity density of charged particles with minimum transverse momentum (p T ) thresholds of 0.15, 0.5, 1, and 2 GeV/c is measured in pp collisions at the center of mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. The study is carried out for inelastic collisions with at least one primary charged particle having a pseudorapidity (η) within ± 0.8 and p T larger than the corresponding threshold. In addition, measurements without p T - thresholds are performed for inelastic and nonsingle-diffractive events as well as for inelastic events with at least one charged particle having |η| < 1 in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV for the first time at the LHC. These measurements are compared to the pythia 6, pythia 8, and epos-lhc models. In general, the models describe the η dependence of particle production well. However, discrepancies are observed for the highest transverse momentum threshold (p T > 2 GeV/c), highlighting the importance of such measurements for tuning event generators. The new measurements agree within uncertainties with results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments obtained at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV .

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle production in pp, p–Pb, Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC

Multiplicity (N ch ) distributions and transverse momentum (p T ) spectra of inclusive primary charged particles in the kinematic range of |η| < 0.8 and 0.15 GeV/c < p T < 10 GeV/c are reported for pp, p–Pb, Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair ranging from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV up to 13 TeV. A sequential two-dimensional unfolding procedure is used to extract the correlation between the transverse momentum of primary charged particles and the charged-particle multiplicity of the corresponding collision. This correlation sharply characterises important features of the final state of a collision and, therefore, can be used as a stringent test of theoretical models. The multiplicity distributions as well as the mean and standard deviation derived from the p T spectra are compared to state-of-the-art model predictions. Providing these fundamental observables of bulk particle production consistently across a wide range of collision energies and system sizes can serve as an important input for tuning Monte Carlo event generators.

J/ψ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 8.16 TeV

Inclusive J /ψ yields and average transverse momenta in p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 8 . 16 TeV are measured as a function of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density with ALICE. The J /ψ mesons are reconstructed at forward (2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53) and backward ( - 4 . 46 < y cms < - 2 . 96) center-of-mass rapidity in their dimuon decay channel while the charged-particle pseudorapidity density is measured around midrapidity. The J /ψ yields at forward and backward rapidity normalized to their respective average values increase with the normalized charged-particle pseudorapidity density, the former showing a weaker increase than the latter. The normalized average transverse momenta at forward and backward rapidity manifest a steady increase from low to high charged-particle pseudorapidity density with a saturation beyond the average value.

This is the first search at the LHC for new particles with a charge between 𝑒/3 and 0.9⁢𝑒, including an extension of previous results at a charge of 2⁢𝑒/3. Masses up to 640 GeV and charges as low as 𝑒/3 are excluded at 95% confidence level. These are the most stringent limits to date for the considered Drell-Yan-like production mode.

A review on charged-particle transport modeling for laser direct-drive fusion

Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) with the laser-indirect-drive scheme has recently made a tremendous breakthrough recently after decades of intensive research effort. Taking this success to the next step, the ICF community is coming to a general consensus that laser direct-drive (LDD) fusion might be the viable way for enabling inertial fusion energy (IFE) and high-gain targets for other applications. Designing and understanding LDD fusion targets heavily rely on radiation-hydrodynamic code simulations, in which charged-particle transport plays an essential role in modeling laser-target energy coupling and bootstrap heating of fusion-produced α-particles. To better simulate charged-particle transport in LDD targets, over the past four decades the plasma physics community has advanced transport calculations from simple plasma physics models to sophisticated computations based on first-principles methods. In this review, we give an overview of the current status of charged-particle transport modeling for LDD fusion, including what challenges we still face and the possible paths moving forward to advance transport modeling for ICF simulations. We hope this review will provide a summary of exciting challenges to stimulate young minds to enter the field, facilitate further progress in understanding warm-dense matter physics, and ultimately bridge toward the success of reliable LDD fusion designs for IFE and other high-gain ICF applications.
