Fast approximation to supershell partition functions: Explicit forms of the coefficients

In a previous work, we derived a formula for supershell partition functions, which are the cornerstone of the Super-Transition-Array approach to radiative-opacity calculations. The new expression takes the form of a functional of the distribution of energies within the supershell and allows for fast and accurate computations, truncating the number of terms in the expansion. The latter involves coefficients (denoted Γ $k$ ) for which we obtained a recursion relation. In the present short paper, as a complement of the previous one, we give an explicit formula for the coefficients Γ $k$ . Another recursion relation is also provided, as well as an alternative expression involving Bell polynomials. In conclusion, the connections with cycle indexes of permutation groups and with elementary symmetric polynomials are outlined.

Prototype equation of state for phase transition of confined fluids based on the generalized van der Waals partition function

A simple self-consistent prototype equation of state (EOS) based on the Generalized van der Waals (vdW) partition function has been demonstrated to describe the phase transition of simple fluids in nanopores with uniform size. Different from those commonly presented in the literature, the new EOS does not need an auxiliary equation that is conventionally applied to provide the capillary pressure derived from surface tension. Lastly, the encouraging performance of the EOS calls for further extension to applications with more complex fluids and porous media.

The large- N partition function for non-parity-invariant Chern-Simons-matter theories

We extend the Fermi gas approach to a class of ABJM-like necklace quiver theories without parity invariance. The resulting partition function on S 3 retains the form of an Airy function, but now includes a phase that scales as Nk in the large- N limit where k is an overall Chern-Simons level. We demonstrate the presence of this phase both analytically and numerically in the case of a three node quiver.

Restricted Partition Function Semiclassical Transition State Theory (RPF-SCTST): Applications to Reactions Involving Hydrogen Cyanide, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Formaldehyde Oxide

We demonstrate the efficiency of the numerical calculation of thermal semiclassical transition state theory (SCTST) rates across several representative chemical reactions using the restricted partition function (RPF)─viz a function that depends only on the imaginary action associated with a reaction. Here, we treat the potential energy surfaces (PESs) through fourth order expansions around the saddle point and integrate the Hamiltonian up to second order in employing vibrational perturbation theory. We apply this formalism to uni- and bimolecular reactions with different─though relatively high─barrier heights to uncover the influence of the barrier properties, minimal energies, and separability of the rotational motion on rate constants and tunneling corrections. Although all modes are coupled within the RPF, we found in our numerical examples that the rotational component in the absence of significant rotational distortions can be separated from the vibrational contributions. Moreover, a classical treatment of the rotational contribution is adequate over the temperature range from approximately 100 to 1000 K. We also found that the choice of DFT basis set can lead to variations in rate constants of up to an order of magnitude. Lastly, different schemes for counting eligible energy levels result in rate constants that differ by no more than a factor of 2, with the remaining discrepancies attributed to the treatment of near-convergent levels in perturbation theory.

A universal inequality on the unitary 2D CFT partition function

We prove the conjecture proposed by Hartman, Keller and Stoica (HKS) [1]: the grand-canonical free energy of a unitary 2D CFT with a sparse spectrum below the scaling dimension $\frac{c}{12}$ + ϵ and below the twist $\frac{c}{12}$ is universal in the large c limit for all β L β R ≠ 4π 2 . The technique of the proof allows us to derive a one-parameter (with parameter α ∈ (0, 1]) family of universal inequalities on the unitary 2D CFT partition function with general central charge c ⩾ 0, using analytical modular bootstrap. We derive an iterative equation for the domain of validity of the inequality on the (β L , β R ) plane. The infinite iteration of this equation gives the boundary of maximal-validity domain, which depends on the parameter α in the inequality.

Semiclassical transition state theory through the lens of the restricted partition function

The wide adoption of transition state theory in resolving the rates of molecular processes relies on the simplification from reducing the formal and numerical expense of dynamics by a geometric constraint. Such a reduction is at odds with the uncertainty in localization that the uncertainty principle requires. While many forms of semiclassical transition state theory (SCTST) have been aimed at addressing this challenge, a popular approach has relied on resolving the underlying phase space structure of the exact rate formula to leverage Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization. Here, the Hernandez–Miller SCTST reframed the thermal rate formula into an integral of the so-called restricted partition function (RPF) over the action associated with the reaction. The density-of-state SCTST has reframed the rate formula in terms of the instanton’s density of states (DoS). Here, we show the relationship between the RPF-SCTST and the DoS-SCTST and derive the latter from the former. In this way, we help unify these branches of SCTST and provide a clearer formalism for future advances.

3d gravity from Virasoro TQFT: Holography, wormholes and knots

We further develop the description of three-dimensional quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of Virasoro TQFT formulated in our previous paper [SciPost Phys. 15, 151 (2023)]. We compare the partition functions computed in the Virasoro TQFT formalism to the semiclassical evaluation of Euclidean gravity partition functions. This matching is highly non-trivial, but can be checked directly in some examples. We then showcase the formalism in action, by computing the gravity partition functions of many relevant topologies. For holographic applications, we focus on the partition functions of Euclidean multi-boundary wormholes with three-punctured spheres as boundaries. This precisely quantifies the higher moments of the structure constants in the proposed ensemble boundary dual and subjects the proposal to thorough checks. Finally, we investigate in detail the example of the figure eight knot complement as a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that the Virasoro TQFT partition function is identical to the partition function computed in Teichmüller theory, thus giving strong evidence for the equivalence of these TQFTs. We also show how to produce a large class of manifolds via Dehn surgery on the figure eight knot.

Precision microstate counting for the entropy of wrapped M5-branes

We study the large N expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3- manifold, M 3 . Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of PSL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on M 3 . Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large N limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in 1/N . Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order N 3 and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the log N -terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in 1/N provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Microscopic entropy of rotating electrically charged AdS 4 black holes from field theory localization

We employ supersymmetric localization to determine the exact partition function of 3d N = 2 gauge theories on a background given by a round S 2 fibered over a circle and certain complexified background fields. The Coulomb branch localization locus includes monopole configurations, and the partition function reduces to a matrix model. We consider the partition function of the ABJM theory on this background as an explicit case. We verify that the large-N limit of the ABJM theory partition function produces, in the Cardy limit, the entropy function of the dual rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS 4 supersymmetric black holes and thus provides a microscopic explanation for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

On the computation of moments in the Super-Transition-Arrays model for radiative opacity calculations

In the Super-Transition-Array statistical method for the computation of radiative opacity of hot dense matter, the moments of the absorption or emission features involve partition functions with reduced degeneracies, occurring through the calculation of averages of products of subshell populations. Here, in the present work, we discuss several aspects of the computation of such peculiar partition functions, insisting on the precautions that must be taken in order to avoid numerical difficulties. In a previous work, we derived a formula for supershell partition functions, which takes the form of a functional of the distribution of energies within the supershell and allows for fast and accurate computations, truncating the number of terms in the expansion. The latter involves coefficients for which we obtained a recursion relation and an explicit formula. We show that such an expansion can be combined with the recurrence relation for shifted partition functions. We also propose, neglecting the effect of fine structure as a first step, a positive-definite formula for the Super-Transition-Array moments of any order, providing an insight into the asymmetry and sharpness of the latter. The corresponding formulas are free of alternating sums. Several ways to speed up the calculations are also presented.

Scattering neutrinos, spin models, and permutations

We consider a class of Heisenberg all-to-all coupled spin models inspired by neutrino interactions in a supernova with N degrees of freedom. These models are characterized by a coupling matrix that is relatively simple in the sense that there are only a few, relative to N , nontrivial eigenvalues, in distinction to the classic Heisenberg spin-glass models, leading to distinct behavior in both the high-temperature and low-temperature regimes. When the momenta of the neutrinos are uniform and random in directions, we can calculate the large- N partition function for the quantum Heisenberg model. In particular, the high-temperature partition function predicts a non-Gaussian density of states, providing interesting counterexamples showing the limits of general theorems on the density of states for quantum spin models. We can repeat the same argument for classical Heisenberg models, also known as rotor models, and we find the high-temperature expansion is completely controlled by the eigenvalues of the coupling matrix, and again predicts non-Gaussian behavior for the density of states as long as the number of eigenvalues does not scale linearly with N . Indeed, we derive the amusing fact that these partition functions are essentially the generating function for counting permutations in the high-temperature regime. Finally, for the case relevant to neutrinos in a supernova, we identify the low-temperature phase as a unique state with the direction of the momenta of the neutrino dictating its coherent state in flavor-space, a state we dub the “flavor-momentum-locked” state. Dynamical edge modes and entanglement in Maxwell theory

Abstract Previous work on black hole partition functions and entanglement entropy suggests the existence of “edge” degrees of freedom living on the (stretched) horizon. We identify a local and “shrinkable” boundary condition on the stretched horizon that gives rise to such degrees of freedom. They can be interpreted as the Goldstone bosons of gauge transformations supported on the boundary, with the electric field component normal to the boundary as their symplectic conjugate. Applying the covariant phase space formalism for manifolds with boundary, we show that both the symplectic form and Hamiltonian exhibit a bulk-edge split. We then show that the thermal edge partition function is that of a codimension-two ghost compact scalar living on the horizon. In the context of a de Sitter static patch, this agrees with the edge partition functions found by Anninos et al. in arbitrary dimensions. It also yields a 4D entanglement entropy consistent with the conformal anomaly. Generalizing to Proca theory, we find that the prescription of Donnelly and Wall reproduces existing results for its edge partition function, while its classical phase space does not exhibit a bulk-edge split.
