NACA Flight-Path Angle and Air-Speed Recorder

A new trailing bomb-type instrument for photographically recording the flight-path angle and air speed of aircraft in unaccelerated flight is described. The instrument consists essentially of an inclinometer, air-speed meter and a film-drum case. The inclinometer carries an oil-damped pendulum which records optically the flight-path angle upon a rotating motor-driven film drum. The air-speed meter consists of a taut metal diaphragm of high natural frequency which is acted upon by the pressure difference of a Prandtl type Pitot-static tube. The inclinometer record and air-speed record are made optically on the same sensitive film. Two records taken by this instrument are shown.

F-104 low-gravity calibration tests for materials processing in space precursory experiments

A precursory low-gravity flight experiment in an F-104 aircraft was conducted to check out the vehicle as a suitable flight test carrier for microgravity experiments. Calibration experiment verification tests in the F-104 were completed. Three flight parabolas were flown. The test data shows all the test parameters recorded by telemetry to have reasonable values. Photographic records are clear and distinct.Solidification modes were the same as those observed in other low gravity environments. The F-104 has been proven to be a useful test bed for low gravity experiments which require less than 60 seconds of low g time.

Project Fire photographic summary and record of reentry phenomena at hyperbolic velocities

Project Fire was undertaken by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to measure the total and radiative heating experienced by a blunt body reentering the earth's atmosphere at 11 300 meters per second. This report presents a photographic record of the Fire II spacecraft during its reentry. The photographs were clear enough to establish the times of major events, and they show that adequate-separation was maintained between the reentry package and the spent Antares. This report also identifies operational problems encountered in spacecraft reentry at hyperbolic velocities and presents the solutions satisfactorily employed.

An experimental investigation of the chopping of helicopter main rotor tip vortices by the tail rotor. Part 2: High speed photographic study

The interaction of a free vortex and a rotor was recorded photographically using oil smoke and stroboscopic illumination. The incident vortex is normal to the plane of the rotor and crosses the rotor plane. This idealized aerodynamic experiment most nearly corresponds to helicopter flight conditions in which a tip vortex from the main rotor is incident upon the tail rotor while hovering. The high speed photographs reveal important features not observed using conventional photography where the image is the time average of varying instantaneous images. Most prominent is the strong interaction between the rotor tip vortex system and the incident vortex, resulting in the roll-up of the incident vortex around the (stronger) tip vortices and the resulting rapid destabilization of the deformed incident vortex. The viscous interaction is clearly shown also. Other forms of instabilities or wave-like behavior may be apparent from further analysis of the photographs.

The N.A.C.A. Photographic Apparatus for Studying Fuel Sprays from Oil Engine Injection Valves and Test Results from Several Researches

Apparatus for recording photographically the start, growth, and cut-off of oil sprays from injection valves has been developed at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. The apparatus consists of a high-tension transformer by means of which a bank of condensers is charged to a high voltage. The controlled discharge of these condensers in sequence, at a rate of several thousand per second, produces electric sparks of sufficient intensity to illuminate the moving spray for photographing. The sprays are injected from various types of valves into a chamber containing gases at pressures up to 600 pounds per square inch. Several series of pictures are shown. The results give the effects of injection pressure, chamber pressure, specific gravity of the fuel oil used, and injection-valve design, upon spray characteristics.

Electrophoretic purification of cells in space - Evaluation of results from STS-3

The procedure and results of Electrophoresis Equipment Verification Test, designed to examine electrophoretic behavior of animal cells is suspension more concentrated than possible on earth and flown on the Shuttle flight STS-3, were discussed. Ground-based laboratory values of electrophoretic mobilities of a mixture of human and rabbit aldehyde-fixed red blood cells (RBC) were compared with those recorded at 11 minute intervals on the Shuttle STS-3. RBC migration and separation observed through photographic records were not as expected. However, cell mobilities and migrating band profiles were consistent with the results of laboratory simulation experiments. It was concluded that zero G electrophoresis of very high concentrations (1 x 10 to the 9th) is possible and similar to electrophoresis of normal cell concentrations on earth.

SEC Vidicon spectra of Geminid meteors, 1972

The SEC Vidicon, a low light level closed circuit television system, was used to obtain 137 spectrographic records of meteors at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona, during the Geminid meteor shower in December 1972. Seven of the best Geminid meteor spectra are studied here in detail. The near infrared, out to wavelengths near 9000 A, is recorded for the first time for Geminids. The spectra, in general, exhibit the elements previously found in photographic records of this shower but show a surprising frequency of occurrence of the forbidden green line of O I at 5577 A. This line is normally absent from meteors moving as slowly as the Geminids (36 km/sec) and its presence in these records may be due to the added sensitivity available with the SEC Vidicon. The average green line duration in Geminid meteors with a luminosity near zero absolute visual magnitude is 0.73 sec at a mean height of 95 km, 11 km lower than the green line peak in Perseid meteors of the same luminosity.

Spectrographic studies: Electron induced luminescence in optical materials

The spectral luminescence induced in UV grade sapphire, MgF2 and LiF2, three fused silicas, and three Corning glasses, by 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 MeV electrons was recorded. In the wavelength range from the LiF UV cutoff to the near visible, a plane-grating spectrograph with photographic recording at resolutions of 0.8 and 1.6 nm was utilized. Qualitative results based on relative density tracings of seven of the nine materials obtained from preliminary plates are given.

Project Echo: Boresight Cameras for Recording Antenna Pointing Accuracy

Motion picture cameras equipped with telephoto lenses were installed on the transmitting and receiving antennas at Holmdel, New Jersey. When the Echo satellite was visible, a camera obtained a photographic record of the pointing accuracy of the antenna. These data were then used to correlate variations of signal strength with deviations in antenna pointing angle.

Relevance of ERTS to the State of Ohio

The author has identified the following significant results. A significant result was the fabrication of an image transfer and comparison device. To avoid problems and high costs encountered in manual drafting methods, Battelle staff members have fabricated an inexpensive, yet effective, technique for transferring ERTS-1 analysis displays from the Spatial Data 32-Color Viewer to maps and/or aircraft imagery. In brief, the image transfer-comparison device consists of a 2-way mirror which functions similar to a zoom transfer scope. However, the device permits multiuser viewing and real time photographic recording (35-mm and Polaroid) of enhanced ERTS-1 imagery superimposed over maps and aircraft photography. Thirty-five mm, 70 mm, and 4 in. x 5 in. photographs are taken of 80% of the TV screen of the Spatial Data Density Slicing Viewer. The resulting black and white and color imagery is then used in transparent overlays, viewgraphs, 35-mm and 70-mm transparencies, and paper prints for reports and publications. Annotations can be added on the TV screen or on the finished product.
