Synthesis and physical properties of a new layered ferromagnet Cr 1.21 Te 2

Single crystals of a new layered compound, Cr 1.21 Te 2 , were synthesized via a vapor transport method. The crystal structure and physical properties were characterized by single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, zero-field heat capacity, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Cr 1.21 Te 2 , containing two Cr sites, crystalizes in a trigonal structure with a space group P-3 (No. 147). The Cr site in the interstitial layer is partially occupied. Physical property characterizations indicate that Cr 1.21 Te 2 is metallic with hole pockets at the Fermi energy and undergoes a ferromagnetic phase transition at ~ 173 K. The magnetic moments align along the c axis in the ferromagnetic state. Based on low-temperature magnetization, the spin stiffness constant, D, and spin excitation gap, Δ , were estimated according to Bloch's law to be D = 94 ± 17 meV Å 2 and Δ = 0.45 ± 0.33 meV, suggesting its possible application as a low dimensional ferromagnet.

Design principles and physical properties of two-dimensional heterostructured borides

Principles of design to create dynamically stable transition metal-, lanthanide-, and actinide-based low-dimensional borides are presented. A charge transfer analysis of donor metal atoms to electron deficient honeycombed B lattices allows to predict complex covalent heterostructures hosting Dirac states. The applicable guidelines are supported with the analysis of phonon spectra computed with first-principles calculations to demonstrate the physical stability of nanometer-thick heterostructures. Similar or dissimilar layered borides can be stacked on top of each other in a layer-by-layer fashion creating compounds that can be fundamentally different from the individual layers, opening a rich playground to explore novel physical properties and new materials. Functionalities such as multiple Dirac states, highly dispersive electronic bands, and decoupled acoustic-optical phonon branches are studied. The combination of appealing electronic properties and physical realization makes of predicted layered borides promising materials to integrate a new generation of two-dimensional materials.

Impedance Response Influenced by Variability in the Random Distribution of Physical Properties of Coated Materials in Two-Dimensional Space

Heterogeneous physical characteristics of a system featuring a single-layer film on a metallic surface have been explored via its impedance response. The Nyquist plot showed a distorted semicircle, indicative of the system's unique distribution characteristics. Utilizing a copula-based probability method, a two-dimensional deterministic impedance model was successfully integrated, accounting for spatial physical properties such as permittivity and electrical conductivity. This strategy enabled in-depth exploration and mechanistic quantification of a broad spectrum of properties. A quantitative understanding of impedance signal alterations, characterized by normally or log-normally correlated variables, was achieved through the variation in aspect ratio and characteristic frequency of the impedance spectra. Log-normally distributed electrical properties provided a superior representation of the distorted impedance spectra. As coefficient of variation (CV) values fluctuated, the aspect ratio and characteristic frequency showed heightened sensitivity to log-normal permittivity compared to log-normal electrical conductivity. Notably, a marked positive linear correlation between electrical properties resulted in an impedance response that approximated perfect semicircular spectra. The variability in the electrical properties' distribution was demonstrated by considering the correlation coefficient between electrical conductivity and the z-direction position. Furthermore, the highest aspect ratio of the impedance spectra was observed when the electrical conductivity was randomly distributed across the z-direction space.

pop-cosmos : redshifts and physical properties of KiDS-1000 galaxies

ABSTRACT Principled Bayesian inference of galaxy properties has not previously been performed for wide-area weak-lensing surveys with millions of sources. We address this gap by applying the pop-cosmos generative model to perform spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting for 4 million KiDS (Kilo-Degree Survey)-1000 galaxies. Calibrated on deep COSMOS2020 photometric data, pop-cosmos specifies a physically motivated prior over the galaxy population up to $z \simeq 6$ in stellar population synthesis (SPS) parameter space. Using the Speculator SPS emulator with GPU (graphics processing unit)-accelerated Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling, we perform full posterior inference at 8.2 GPU seconds per galaxy, obtaining joint constraints on galaxy redshifts and physical properties. We validate photometric redshifts against $\sim \!185\,\!000$ KiDS galaxies cross-matched to Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Data Release 1 spectroscopic samples, achieving low bias ($2\times 10^{-3}$), scatter ($\sigma _{\mathrm{MAD}}=0.03$), and outlier fraction (3.2 per cent) for the Bright Galaxy Survey, with comparable performance (bias $3\times 10^{-2}$, $\sigma _{\mathrm{MAD}}=0.05$, 1.0 per cent outliers) for luminous red galaxies (LRGs). Within the LRG sample, we identify massive, dusty, star-forming contaminants at $z \simeq 0.4$ satisfying standard colour selections for quenched populations. We infer trends in stellar mass, star formation, metallicity, and dust across five tomographic redshift bins consistent with established scaling relations. Using specific star formation rate constraints, we identify $\sim$7 per cent of KiDS-1000 galaxies as quenched, versus 37 per cent implied by conservative colour cuts. This enables the construction of weak-lensing samples defined by physical properties while mitigating intrinsic alignment systematics and preserving statistical power. Our analysis validates pop-cosmos out of sample, establishing it as a scalable approach for galaxy evolution and cosmological analyses with photometric surveys.

Physical properties of intergrowth compound Eu 2 CuZn 2 P 3

Here, the physical properties of single-crystalline Eu 2 ⁢CuZn 2 ⁢P 3 were inspected via thermodynamic, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements. Eu 2 ⁢ CuZn 2⁢ P 3 is composed of EuCuP and EuZn 2 ⁢ P 2 motifs stacked in a one-to-one ratio. The magnetic response of Eu 2 ⁢ CuZn 2 ⁢ P 3 is similar to that of EuZn 2 ⁢ P 2 in its A-type antiferromagnetic (semiconducting) state. A Néel temperature of T N = 40.3K is obtained from the specific heat capacity. Single-crystal neutron diffraction reveals a (001) magnetic propagation vector, with primarily in-plane moments coupled along [001] in an up-up-down-down pattern. This spin structure retains the ferromagnetic EuCuP motifs and antiferromagnetic coupling across the EuZn 2 ⁢P 2 motifs. The electrical resistivity is characterized by metallic behavior above 100 K, an increase in ρ upon cooling below ≈ 75K, and a large negative magnetoresistance below T N . First principles calculations evidence a narrow band gap for antiferromagnetic ordering and semimetallic behavior for the ferromagnetic state. This is consistent with the observed effect of magnetic field on the electrical resistivity. Hall effect measurements reveal a field-induced, negative anomalous Hall effect that increases on cooling down to 2 K. Also, an unconventional contribution to the Hall effect dominates the low-field Hall signal, particularly near T N , and is similar in appearance to a topological Hall effect. However, further work is necessary to understand if any of the transport properties have topological origins or if magnetism-induced modifications to the Fermi surface induce these unusual Hall effect signals in this and related materials.

Characterizing Physical Properties of Streambed Interface Sediments Using In Situ Complex Electrical Conductivity Measurements

Streambed sediment physical properties such as surface area, are difficult to quantify in situ but exert a high-level control on a wide range of biogeochemical processes and sorption of contaminants. We introduce the use of complex electrical conductivity (CC) methods (also known as spectral-induced polarization (SIP)) that measure both real and imaginary conductivity to noninvasively and efficiently characterize shallow streambed sediments. We explore the method through synthetic modeling, laboratory, and field measurements to demonstrate the sensitivity of imaginary conductivity to sediment surface area, controlled in part by fine-grained iron oxides produced by anoxic groundwater discharge. Laboratory measurements verify expected relationships between CC parameters and sediment properties. Synthetic modeling using a 1D analytical model illustrates the influence of water layer depth and conductivity on the field CC measurements made at the streambed-stream water interface. Specifically, the inverted sediment imaginary conductivity is less impacted by uncertainty in the water layer depth and conductivity relative to the real conductivity and phase shift. Field CC measurements along a landfill-impacted river reveal discrete streambed zones with enhanced bulk surface area generally corresponding to anoxic groundwater discharge zones with high concentrations of fine-grained iron oxide precipitates.

Physical properties of YbFe 5 P 3 with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure

We report basic physical properties of the quasi-one-dimensional heavy-fermion compound Yb Fe 5 P 3 . Its magnetic susceptibility follows a modified Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperatures with a Weiss temperature between - 5 and - 21 K depending on the direction of the applied magnetic field. Our single crystals of Yb Fe 5 P 3 are good metals with a room-temperature resistivity of ~ 140 μ Ω cm and a residual resistivity of less than 2 μ Ω cm. Below ~ 2 K the resistivity reflects the presence of strong quantum fluctuations, which is supported by specific heat measurements that show a similar strong enhancement in C / T at low temperatures reaching 1.5 J/mol K 2 below T = 0.5 K. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 80 mK. Magnetic fields up to 8 T rapidly suppress the magnetic fluctuations, while resistivity measurements under pressures up to 2.54 GPa indicate the enhancement of quantum fluctuations, although still no order is observed down to 0.3 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest the presence of electronically quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Fermi surface sheets together with three-dimensional electronic pockets. We suggest that the quasi-1D nature of this compound leads to an extended regime of large quantum fluctuations within the paramagnetic state prior to reaching a magnetic instability.

It also plays a key role in the determination of physical properties in strongly correlated electron systems where the Fermi energy lies in multiple bands. Here we report a thorough investigation of a rarely studied 4d perovskite oxide LaRuO 3 by a suite of measurements including transport, magnetization, specific heat, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity, and neutron and x-ray diffraction. Our results are consistent with theoretical predictions, which makes LaRuO 3 an exemplary Hund metal.

Physical Properties of Half-Heusler Antiferromagnet MnPtSn Single Crystal

Herein we report the growth of ternary half-Heusler MnPtSn single crystals and detailed study on its structural and physical properties. MnPtSn single crystal has a larger lattice parameter than that in polycrystal and it exhibits antiferromagnetism with transition temperature T N at about 215 K, distinctly different from the ferromagnetism of MnPtSn polycrystal. Hall resistivity measurement indicates that the dominant carriers are hole-type and the nearly temperature-independent carrier concentration reaches about 2.86 × 10 22 cm –3 at 5 K. Moreover, the carrier mobility is also rather low (4.7 cm 2 ·V –1 s –1 at 5 K). The above results strongly suggest that the significant Mn/Sn anti-site defects, i.e., the content of Mn in MnPtSn single crystal, play a vital role on structural, magnetic and transport properties

Structural and physical properties of 99 complex bulk chalcogenides crystals using first-principles calculations

Chalcogenide semiconductors and glasses have many applications in the civil and military fields, especially in relation to their electronic, optical and mechanical properties for energy conversion and in enviormental materials. However, they are much less systemically studied and their fundamental physical properties for a large class chalcogenide semiconductors are rather scattered and incomplete. Here, we present a detailed study using well defined first-principles calculations on the electronic structure, interatomic bonding, optical, and mechanical properties for 99 bulk chalcogenides including thirteen of these crytals which have never been calculated. Due to their unique composition and structures, these 99 bulk chalcogenides are divided into two main groups. The first group contains 54 quaternary crystals with the structure composition (A2BCQ4) (A = Ag, Cu; B = Zn, Cd, Hg, Mg, Sr, Ba; C = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se, Te), while the second group contains scattered ternary and quaternary chalcogenide crystals with a more diverse composition (AxByCzQn) (A = Ag, Cu, Ba, Cs, Li, Tl, K, Lu, Sr; B = Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Ga, In, P, As, La, Lu, Pb, Cu, Ag; C = Si, Ge, Sn, As, Sb, Bi, Zr, Hf, Ga, In; Q = S, Se, Te; x=1, 2, 3; y=0, 1, 2, 5; z=0, 1, 2 and n=3, 4, 5, 6, 9). Moreover, the total bond order density (TBOD) is used as a single quantum mechanical metric to characterize the internal cohesion of these crystals enabling us to correlate them with the calculated properties, especially their mechanical properties. This work provides a very large database for bulk chalcogenides crucial for the future theoretical and experimental studies, opening opportunities for study the properties and potential application of a wide variety of chalcogenides.

The electro-physical properties of Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 n-type conductivity single crystals with relatively low resistivity were studied. The determined resistivity of semiconductor single crystals Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 n-type conductivity is equal to ρ≈2 Ω-cm at 293K. The activation energy of dark conductivity, measured from the temperature dependence of the resistivity of the In/Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 /In structure, is equal to ΔE≈0.11eV. From optical measurements of the absorption coefficient from the energy of photons in the region of large α, the band-gap width of the single crystal was found, which is equal to E g =1.53eV. Diode structures of Ni/Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 /In obtained by vacuum sputtering of Ni on the surface of a single crystal n-Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 were manufactured and studied. Phase composition of polycrystalline HfNx (0.45 ≤ x ≤ 1.60) and effects of low-energy ion irradiation on microstructure, texture, and physical properties

We have investigated the phase composition of HfNx as a function of x and the effects of low-energy ion irradiation on the microstructure and physical properties of polycrystalline layers grown on SiO2 at 350 °C by ultrahigh vacuum reactive dc magnetron sputtering of Hf in mixed N2/Ar discharges. X-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry results show that the phases obtained in polycrystalline HfNx layers with increasing x are hcp-structure α-Hf:N (x ≲ 0.6); multiphase mixtures consisting of α-Hf, NaCl-structure δ-HfN, rhombohedral ɛ-Hf3N2, and/or ζ-Hf4N3 (0.6 ≲ x ≲ 0.9); δ-HfN single phase (0.9 ≲ x ≲ 1.3); and mixtures of δ-HfN and higher nitrides (x ≳ 1.3). HfNx layers with 0.9 ≲ x ≲ 1.2 grown under mild ion irradiation (incident ion energy Ei ≃ 7 eV and ion-to-Hf flux ratios Ji/JHf = 1−3) are underdense with mixed orientation, low in-plane stress, and rough surface morphology due to limited adatom mobilities resulting in kinetic roughening and atomic shadowing during film growth. However, the use of intense ion irradiation (Ei = 25 eV and Ji/JHf = 4−20) results in HfNx layers, which are fully dense with strongly 111-oriented texture, compressive in-plane stress, and smooth surfaces due to ion irradiation enhanced adatom surface mobilities. In addition, the latter films have lower resistivity and higher hardness. For stoichiometric δ-HfN layers, ρ decreases from 69.7 to 35.2 μΩ cm and H increases from 22.1 to 27.4 GPa, with increasing ion-irradiation intensity. However, for HfNx layers with 1.2 ≲ x ≲ 1.6, the correspondingly higher steady state atomic N surface coverages during deposition alter growth kinetics in favor of 001 texture with a fully dense structure and compressive in-plane stress.

Colloquium : Physical properties of group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers

The state-of-the-art knowledge of ferroelectric and ferroelastic group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers is surveyed. These semiconductors feature remarkable structural and mechanical properties, such as a switchable in-plane spontaneous polarization, soft elastic constants, structural degeneracies, and thermally driven two-dimensional structural transformations. Additionally, these 2D materials display selective valley excitations, valley Hall effects, and persistent spin helix behavior. After a description of their Raman spectra, a discussion of optical properties arising from their lack of centrosymmetry (such as an unusually strong second-harmonic intensity, large bulk photovoltaic effects, photostriction, and tunable exciton binding energies) is provided as well. Here, the physical properties observed in these materials originate from (correlate with) their intrinsic and switchable electric polarization, and the physical behavior hereby reviewed could be of use in nonvolatile memory, valleytronic, spintronic, and optoelectronic devices: these 2D multiferroics enrich and diversify the 2D material toolbox.

Structural and physical properties of two distinct 2D lead halides with intercalated Cu( II )

Transition metal cation intercalation between the layers of two-dimensional (2D) metal halides is an underexplored research area. In this work we focus on the synthesis and physical property characterizations of two layered hybrid lead halides: a new compound [Cu(O 2 C–CH 2 –NH 2 ) 2 ]Pb 2 Br 4 and the previously reported [Cu(O 2 C–(CH 2 ) 3 –NH 3 ) 2 ]PbBr 4 . These compounds exhibit 2D layered crystal structures with incorporated Cu 2+ between the metal halide layers, which is achieved by combining Cu(II) and lead bromide with suitable amino acid precursors. The resultant [Cu(O 2 C–(CH 2 ) 3 –NH 3 ) 2 ]PbBr 4 adopts a 2D layered perovskite structure, whereas the new compound [Cu(O 2 C–CH 2 –NH 2 ) 2 ]Pb 2 Br 4 crystallizes with a new structure type based on edge-sharing dodecahedral PbBr5O3 building blocks. [Cu(O 2 C–CH 2 –NH 2 ) 2 ]Pb 2 Br 4 is a semiconductor with a bandgap of 3.25 eV. It shows anisotropic charge transport properties with a semiconductor resistivity of 1.44 × 10 10 Ω cm (measured along the a-axis) and 2.17 × 10 10 Ω cm (along the bc-plane), respectively. The fabricated prototype detector based on this material showed response to soft low-energy X-rays at 8 keV with a detector sensitivity of 1462.7 μCGy –1 cm –2 , indicating its potential application for ionizing radiation detection. Finally, these encouraging results are discussed together with the results from density functional theory calculations, optical, magnetic, and thermal property characterization experiments.

The chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanides: Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy

The fundamental redox chemistry and valence electronic structure of the lanthanides in molecular complexes and extended solids continues to be a fertile area of research. The contemporary understanding of the accessible oxidation states of the lanthanide elements and the variability in their electronic structure is the result of several paradigm shifts. While the lanthanide elements have already found widespread use in technical and consumer applications, the continued reevaluation of basic redox properties is a central chemical concern to establish a more complete description of periodic properties. This fundamental understanding of valence electronic structure as it is derived from oxidation state and coordination environment is essential for the continued development of lanthanides in quantum information science and quantum materials research. This review presents the chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanide ions in extended solids and molecules with a focus on the elements apart from cerium: praseodymium, neodymium, terbium, and dysprosium.

Physical Properties of Moist, Fermented Corn Kernels

A novel approach to producing corn stover biomass feedstock has been investigated. In this approach, corn grain and stover are co-harvested at moisture contents much less than typical corn silage. The grain and stover are conserved together by anaerobic storage and fermentation and then separated before end use. When separated from the stover, the moist, fermented grain had physical characteristics that differ from typical low-moisture, unfermented grain. A comprehensive study was conducted to quantify the physical properties of this moist, fermented grain. Six corn kernel treatments, either fermented or unfermented, having different moisture contents, were used. Moist, fermented kernels (26 and 36% w.b. moisture content) increased in size during storage. The fermented kernels’ widths and thicknesses were 10% and 15% greater, respectively, and their volume was 28% greater than the dry kernels (15% w.b.). Dry basis particle density was 9% less for moist, fermented kernels. Additionally, the dry basis bulk density was 29% less, and the dry basis hopper-discharged mass flow rate was 36% less. Moist, fermented grain had significantly greater kernel-to-kernel coefficients of friction and angles of repose compared to relatively dry grain. The friction coefficient on four different surfaces was also significantly greater for fermented kernels. Fermented corn kernels had lower individual kernel rupture strengths than unfermented kernels. These physical differences must be considered when designing material handling and processing systems for moist, fermented corn grain.

Cosmic Reionization on Computers: Statistics, Physical Properties, and Environments of Lyman Limit Systems at z ~ 6

Lyman limit systems (LLSs) are dense hydrogen clouds with high enough H i column densities to absorb Lyman continuum photons emitted from distant quasars. Their high column densities imply an origin in dense environments; however, the statistics and distribution of LLSs at high redshifts still remain uncertain. In this paper, we use self-consistent radiative transfer cosmological simulations from the Cosmic Reionization on Computers (CROC) project to study the physical properties of LLSs at the tail end of cosmic reionization at z ~ 6. We generate 3000 synthetic quasar sight lines to obtain a large number of LLS samples in the simulations. In addition, with the high physical fidelity and resolution of CROC, we are able to quantify the association between these LLS samples and nearby galaxies. Our results show that the fraction of LLSs spatially associated with nearby galaxies increases with H i column density. Moreover, we find that LLSs that are not near any galaxy typically reside in filamentary structures connecting neighboring galaxies in the intergalactic medium (IGM). This quantification of the distribution and association of LLSs to large-scale structure informs our understanding of the IGM–galaxy connection during the "Epoch of Reionization," and provides a theoretical basis for interpreting future observations.
