Transport barriers to self-propelled particles in fluid flows

Here, we present theory and experiments demonstrating the existence of invariant manifolds that impede the motion of microswimmers in two-dimensional fluid flows. One-way barriers are apparent in a hyperbolic fluid flow that block the swimming of both smooth-swimming and run-and-tumble Bacillus subtilis bacteria. We identify key phase-space structures, called swimming invariant manifolds (SwIMs), that serve as separatrices between different regions of long-time swimmer behavior. When projected into xy space, the edges of the SwIMs act as one-way barriers, consistent with the experiments.

Focused Interest Groups Propel Innovation in the Emerging Data-Driven Hardware Ecosystem

Over the past several decades, the science of electron microscopy (EM) has risen to become one of the cornerstone approaches to understanding material structure, chemistry, and defects at exceptional spatial resolution. This rise can be attributed to the hard work of researchers and companies who have pushed the bounds of instrumentation and analysis, but it is also the result of advocacy by members of professional societies. Furthermore, such advocacy is exemplified by the Aberration Corrected EM (ACEM) focused interest group (FIG) of the Microscopy Society of America (MSA), which has played an important role in facilitating new hardware developments, promoting the exchange of ideas to catalyze discovery, and building the next generation of leaders in electron microscopy. From the early 2000s to the present, aberration correction has moved from proof-of-concept instrumentation to an established technique, providing unprecedented improvements in spatial and chemical resolution for breakthroughs in chemistry, physics, and materials science.

Propelling sustainable energy: Multi-omics analysis of pennycress FATTY ACID ELONGATION1 knockout for biofuel production

Abstract The aviation industry’s growing interest in renewable jet fuel has encouraged the exploration of alternative oilseed crops. Replacing traditional fossil fuels with a sustainable, domestically sourced crop can substantially reduce carbon emissions, thus mitigating global climate instability. Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) is an emerging oilseed intermediate crop that can be grown during the offseason between maize (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max) to produce renewable biofuel. Pennycress is being domesticated through breeding and mutagenesis, providing opportunities for trait enhancement. Here, we employed metabolic engineering strategies to improve seed oil composition and bolster the plant's economic competitiveness. FATTY ACID ELONGATION1 (FAE1) was targeted using CRISPR-Cas 9 gene editing to eliminate very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) from pennycress seed oil, thereby enhancing its cold flow properties. Through an integrated multiomics approach, we investigated the impact of eliminating VLCFAs in developing and mature plant embryos. Our findings revealed improved cold-germination efficiency in fae1, with seedling emergence occurring up to 3 d earlier at 10 °C. However, these alterations led to a tradeoff between storage oil content and composition. Additionally, these shifts in lipid biosynthesis were accompanied by broad metabolic changes, such as the accumulation of glucose and ADP-glucose quantities consistent with increased starch production. Furthermore, shifts to shorter FA chains triggered the upregulation of heat shock proteins, underscoring the importance of VLCFAs in stress signaling pathways. Overall, this research provides crucial insights for optimizing pennycress seed oil while preserving essential traits for biofuel applications.

The Metaproteomics Initiative: a coordinated approach for propelling the functional characterization of microbiomes

Through connecting genomic and metabolic information, metaproteomics is an essential approach for understanding how microbiomes function in space and time. The international metaproteomics community is delighted to announce the launch of the Metaproteomics Initiative (www.metaproteomics.org), the goal of which is to promote dissemination of metaproteomics fundamentals, advancements, and applications through collaborative networking in microbiome research. The Initiative aims to be the central information hub and open meeting place where newcomers and experts interact to communicate, standardize, and accelerate experimental and bioinformatic methodologies in this field. We invite the entire microbiome community to join and discuss potential synergies at the interfaces with other disciplines, and to collectively promote innovative approaches to gain deeper insights into microbiome functions and dynamics.
