X-ray Security Imaging on Personal Dosimetry [Slides]

Federal regulations mandate that personal dosimetry devices — like optically stimulated luminescence (OSLs) — must be worn by all US Department of Energy (DOE) and associated radiation workers to track their occupational dose. Unfortunately, the inadvertent passage of OSLs through x-ray security scanners can compromise their validity. With the advent of high energy, advanced resolution security technology used in airports, this once insignificant issue now requires that Radiological Control (RadCon) be able to accurately discern non-occupational dose to effected OSLs. This presentation will discuss the principles, methods, and, rather surprising, models for establishing the corrective dose estimates at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), and its implication across the DOE.

Wishart5* 1Idaho National Laboratory; 2The University of Iowa; 3Hunter College; 4Oak Ridge National Laboratory; 5Brookhaven National Laboratory; 6University of Notre Dame Abstract: The solvated (eS–) is a powerful reducing agent and one of the primary products of molten salt radiolysis. In these extreme high-temperature environments, the eS– can initiate cascades of redox processes that significantly alter the physical and chemical properties of a molten salt, posing challenges for molten salt reactor (MSR) performance and longevity. Consequently, mastering the fundamental behavior of the eS– could enable the design of specific molten salt mixtures with tailored Lewis acidities for controlling the speciation and chemical reactivity of the eS–, thereby mitigating its overall impact on MSR technologies. Here, we use time-resolved electron pulse radiolysis techniques for determining chemical kinetics and transient absorption spectra, combined with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to explore the influence of multivalent metal cations on the fundamental speciation and distribution of eS– coordination environments.

The advent of third-harmonic-generation laser systems: personal recollections

In the mid to late 1970s there was considerable debate as to which laser technology should be pursued—glass lasers (1-μm wavelength) or CO 2 lasers (10 μm). Based on target-physics considerations, theorists were advocating for shorter wavelengths. The physics understanding was confirmed by exciting results from the group at the École Polytechnique, who observed close to 100% target absorption with just a few joules of fourth-harmonic energy. These results motivated the leadership at LLE to plan similar experiments at the third harmonic, with a few more joules. This presentation covers a small time period from 1979 to 1980 during which highly efficient Third-Harmonic Generation (THG) became understood theoretically and demonstrated experimentally, leading to the worldwide adoption of THG with glass lasers for fusion research.

1994 SEMCOG Household-Based Person Trip Survey

The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments contracted with the Applied Management & Planning Group to conduct a travel behavior survey of 7,361 households from March 28, 1994, to June 10, 1994. The primary purpose of this study was to provide the council with a new database of travel behavior to assist in updating the region's transportation models. This data collection includes demographic, socioeconomic, travel, and mobile source emissions models for projecting future patterns of development, travel, congestion, and air pollution. Information about household characteristics and travel was collected using a one-day, activity-focused diary and a separate household survey. In an activity diary, respondents recorded 65,535 trips during the assigned the day.
