Timelike form factor for the anomalous process γ⁎π → ππ

The form factor 𝐹 3𝜋 (𝑠, 𝑡, 𝑢) for the anomalous process 𝛾∗𝜋 → 𝜋𝜋 is calculated in the isospin limit for several values of the light current-quark mass (i.e., the pion mass) using Dyson–Schwinger and Bethe–Salpeter equations. Beyond a quark interaction kernel representing gluon-mediated interactions, leading beyond-rainbow-ladder effects at low energies are incorporated by back-coupling pions as explicit degrees of freedom. Building upon an earlier calculation of the quark-photon vertex that captures the branch cut associated with the two-pion threshold and the ρ-meson resonance, the form factor 𝐹 3𝜋 (𝑠, 𝑡, 𝑢) is determined for timelike Mandelstam s. In particular, predictions are made for the kinematics relevant to the Primakoff reaction studied with COMPASS/AMBER at CERN.

Toward the determination of 𝐶⁢𝑃-odd pion-nucleon couplings

The nucleon matrix elements (NMEs) associated with quark chromomagnetic dipole moments (cMDMs) play a crucial role in determining the 𝐶𝑃-odd pion-nucleon couplings induced by quark chromoelectric dipole moments. In recent years, it has been argued that the NMEs of cMDMs can be related to the third moment of the nucleon's higher-twist (specifically, twist-3) parton distribution function (PDF) 𝑒⁡(𝑥), which can, in principle, be measured through dihadron production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes. By applying the spin-flavor expansion to the cMDM operators in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit, where 𝑁 𝑐 is the number of quark colors, we show that the NMEs receive contributions not only from the twist-3 PDF 𝑒⁡(𝑥) but also from an additional, previously neglected nucleon form factor. Incorporating constraints from the spin-flavor expansion, recent experimental data on 𝑒⁡(𝑥), as well as model calculations of 𝑒⁡(𝑥), we estimate the NMEs of the cMDM operators. Our analysis indicates that the NMEs are dominated by the nucleon form factors, and the cMDM contributions to pion-nucleon couplings can be comparable to those from the quark sigma terms.

Dissecting a strongly coupled scalar nucleon

We continue our investigation of the stress within a strongly coupled scalar nucleon, and now dissect the gravitational form factors into contributions from its constituents, the (mock) nucleon and the (mock) pion. The computation is based on a nonperturbative solution of the scalar Yukawa model in the light-front Hamiltonian formalism with a Fock sector expansion, including up to one nucleon and two pions. By employing the “good currents” T i + + , T i + − and T i 12 , we extract the full set of gravitational form factors A i , D i , c ¯ i without the contamination of the spurious form factors and free of uncanceled UV divergences. With these results, we decompose the mass of the system into its constituents and compute the matter and mechanical radii, gaining insights into the strongly coupled system. Gluon moment and parton distribution function of the pion from 𝑁 𝑓 = 2 +1 +1 lattice QCD

We present the first calculation of the pion gluon moment from lattice QCD in the continuum-physical limit. The calculation is done using clover fermions for the valence action with three pion masses, 220, 310 and 690 MeV, and three lattice spacings, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm, using ensembles generated by MILC Collaboration with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ). On the lattice, we nonperturbatively renormalize the gluon operator in RI/MOM scheme using the cluster-decomposition error reduction (CDER) technique to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the renormalization constant. We extrapolate the pion gluon moment to the continuum-physical limit and obtain ⟨𝑥⟩ 𝑔 = 0.394⁢(58) stat+NPR ⁢(39) mixing in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV, with first error being the statistical error and uncertainties in nonperturbative renormalization, and the second being a systematic uncertainty estimating the effect of ignoring quark mixing. Our pion gluon momentum fraction has a central value lower than two recent single-ensemble lattice-QCD results near physical pion mass but is consistent with the recent global fits by JAM and xFitter and with most QCD-model estimates.

$Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$ form factors from lattice QCD and standard-model predictions for $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − and $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢𝛾 decays

We present the first lattice QCD determination of the $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$ vector, axial-vector, and tensor form factors, which are relevant for the theory of rare decays including $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢ℓ + ⁢ℓ − and $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢𝛾. The calculation is performed with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions at three different lattice spacings and pion masses in the range from approximately 430 to 230 MeV. The bottom quark is implemented using an anisotropic clover action. Three-point functions with a wide range of source-sink separations and model averaging are used to extract the ground-state contributions. We fit the dependence of the form factors on the momentum transfer, the pion mass, and the lattice spacing using modified 𝑧 expansions that account for subthreshold branch cuts, and apply dispersive bounds and asymptotic behavior constraints to achieve controlled uncertainties in the full semileptonic kinematic region. Using our form factor results, we present standard model predictions for the $Ξ$$^{−}_{𝑏}$ → $Ξ$ − ⁢𝛾 and $Ξ$$^{−}_{𝑏}$ → $Ξ$ − ⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − branching fractions and two angular observables.

Untangling the heavy-flavor mess: status of the Fermilab-MILC calculation of the $B_{(s)}\to D^{(\ast)}_{(s)}\ellν$ form factors

We present the status of calculations of the form factors of the most relevant heavy-to-heavy and heavy-to-light decay channels. Using seven $N_f = 2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles, with lattice spacings ranging from 0.15 fm down to 0.06 fm, we calculate the form factors of the decays, including correlations among them. More than half of our ensembles feature physical pion masses, and the heavy quarks are simulated at their physical masses using the Wilson-clover action with the Fermilab interpretation. Even though we have recently seen huge qualitative and quantitative leaps in the characterization of heavy-to-heavy decays, these advances have failed to translate into improvements for the inclusive vs exclusive question, or the matter of the Lepton Flavor Universality ratios. In particular, in the $B\to D^{\ast}\ellν$ channel, the current situation of the lattice-QCD form factors is far from clear. Further, the latest lattice-QCD results on the heavy-to-light form factors display unexplained tensions that must urgently be resolved. The work presented here is an attempt to address these issues.

All-loop soft theorem for pions

In this paper we discuss a generalization of the Adler zero to loop integrands in the planar limit of the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM). The Adler zero for integrands is violated starting at the two-loop order and is only recovered after integration. Here we propose a soft theorem satisfied by loop integrands with any number of loops and legs. This requires a generalization of NLSM integrands to an off shell framework with certain deformed kinematics. Defining an , we identify a simple nonvanishing soft behavior of integrands, which we call the . We find that the proposed soft theorem is satisfied by the “surface” integrand of Arkani-Hamed and Figueiredo [], which is obtained from the shifted Tr φ 3 surfacehedron integrand. Finally, we derive an on shell version of the algebraic soft theorem that takes an interesting form in terms of self-energy factors and lower-loop integrands in a mixed theory of pions and scalars. Gauge Theory Bootstrap

We propose the gauge theory bootstrap, a method to compute the pion S matrix that describes the low-energy physics of the strong interaction and other similar gauge theories. The phase shifts of the S 0 , P 1 , and S 2 waves obtained are in good agreement with experimental results. The only numerical inputs are the quark mass m q , the QCD scale Λ QCD , the pion mass m π , and the pion decay constant f π without any other experimental data. We make use of the form-factor bootstrap recently proposed by Karateev, Kuhn, and Penedones together with a finite energy version of the Shifman-Veinshtein-Zakharov sum rules. Kinematically enhanced interpolating operators for boosted hadrons

We propose to use interpolating operators for lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations of highly boosted pions and nucleons with kinematically enhanced ground-state overlap factors at large momentum. Because this kinematic enhancement applies to the signal but not the variance of the correlation function, these interpolating operators can achieve better signal-to-noise ratios at large momentum. We perform proof-of-principle calculations with boosted pions and nucleons using close-to-physical and larger quark masses to explore the utility of our proposal. Results for effective energies and matrix elements, as well as Lanczos ground-state energy estimators, are consistent with theoretical expectations for signal-to-noise improvement at large momenta.

Efficient lattice QCD computation of radiative-leptonic-decay form factors at multiple positive and negative photon virtualities

In previous work [D. Giusti, Methods for high-precision determinations of radiative-leptonic decay form factors using lattice QCD, Phys. Rev. D 107, 074507 (2023)], we showed that form factors for radiative leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons can be determined efficiently and with high precision from lattice QCD using the “three-dimensional (3D) method,” in which three-point functions are computed for all values of the current insertion time and the time integral is performed at the data-analysis stage. Here, we demonstrate another benefit of the 3D method: the form factors can be extracted for any number of nonzero photon virtualities from the same three-point functions at no extra cost. We present results for the $D_s → ℓνγ*$ vector form factor as a function of photon energy and photon virtuality, for both positive and negative virtuality, for a single ensemble with 340 MeV pion mass and 0.11 fm lattice spacing. In our analysis, we separately consider the two different time orderings and the different quark flavors in the electromagnetic current. We discuss in detail the behavior of the unwanted exponentials contributing to the three-point functions, as well as the choice of fit models and fit ranges used to remove them for various values of the virtuality. While positive photon virtuality is relevant for decays to multiple charged leptons, negative photon virtuality suppresses soft contributions and is of interest in QCD-factorization studies of the form factors.

Transverse-momentum-dependent pion structures from lattice QCD: Collins-Soper kernel, soft factor, TMDWF, and TMDPDF

We present the first lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculation of the pion valence-quark transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF) within the framework of large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). Using correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge (CG), we computed the quasi-TMD beam function for a pion with a mass of 300 MeV, a fine lattice spacing of 𝑎 =0.06 fm, and multiple large momenta up to 3 GeV. The intrinsic soft functions in the CG approach are extracted from form factors with large momentum transfer, and as a byproduct, we also obtain the corresponding Collins-Soper (CS) kernel. Our determinations of both the soft function and the CS kernel agree with perturbation theory at small transverse separations (𝑏 ⊥ ) between the quarks. At larger 𝑏 ⊥ , the CS kernel remains consistent with recent results obtained using both CG and gauge-invariant TMD correlators in the literature. By combining next-to-leading logarithmic factorization of the quasi-TMD beam function and the soft function, we obtain an 𝑥-dependent pion valence-quark TMDPDF for transverse separations 𝑏 ⊥ ≳1 fm. Interestingly, we find that the 𝑏 ⊥ dependence of the phenomenological parametrizations of TMDPDF for moderate values of 𝑥 are in reasonable agreement with our QCD determinations. In addition, we present results for the transverse-momentum-dependent wave function for a heavier pion with 670 MeV mass.

Nucleon tensor form factors at large N c

We investigate nucleon tensor form factors in the large- N c limit. In this picture, the nucleon emerges as a state of the N c valence quarks, which were bound by pion mean fields that were created by the presence of the valence quarks self-consistently. We find that the tensor charge ( g T u − d = 0.99 ) and the anomalous tensor magnetic moment ( κ T u + d = 7.61 ) are dominated by valence quarks, while the tensor quadrupole moment ( Q T u − d = − 7.02 ) shows significant sea quark effects. We examine how these quantities vary as the average size of the pion mean field is changed, showing interpolation between nonrelativistic quark and Skyrme limits. We also observe that g T u − d and κ T u + d depend weakly on the pion mass. In contrast, Q T u − d exhibits strong enhancement near the chiral limit. The numerical results are in good agreement with available lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) data and provide predictions for unmeasured quantities. 𝐵 → 𝜌⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ Resonance Form Factors from 𝐵→ 𝜋⁢𝜋⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ in Lattice QCD

The decay 𝐵 → 𝜌⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ is an attractive process for determining the magnitude of the smallest Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑏 |, and can provide new insights into the origin of the long-standing exclusive-inclusive discrepancy in determinations of this standard-model parameter. This requires a nonperturbative QCD calculation of the 𝐵 → 𝜌 form factors 𝑉, 𝐴 0 , 𝐴 1 , and 𝐴 12 . The unstable nature of the 𝜌 resonance has prevented precise lattice QCD calculations of these form factors to date. Here, we present the first lattice QCD calculation of the 𝐵 → 𝜌 form factors in which the 𝜌 is treated properly as a resonance in 𝑃-wave 𝜋⁢𝜋 scattering. To this end, we use the Lellouch-Lüscher finite-volume formalism to compute the 𝐵 → 𝜋⁢𝜋 form factors as a function of both momentum transfer and 𝜋⁢𝜋 invariant mass, and then analytically continue to the 𝜌 resonance pole. This calculation is performed with 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors at a pion mass of approximately 320 MeV, and demonstrates a clear path toward results at the physical point.

Helium-4 gravitational form factors: Exchange currents

We evaluate the leading exchange corrections to the helium-4 gravitational form factors (GFFs) to momenta of the order of the nucleon mass. We use both the K-harmonic method with simple pair nucleon potential, and a Jastrow trial function using the Argonne 𝑣 14 potential, to evaluate the helium-4 GFFs. The exchange current contributions include the pair interaction, plus the seagull and the pion exchange interactions, modulo the recoil corrections. To estimate the off-shellness of the pion nucleon coupling in this momenta range, we discuss the results using either the pseudoscalar (PS) or pseudovector (PV) pion-nucleon couplings. When the PV coupling is used, the pair diagram contribution is higher order in the nonrelativistic expansion. The results for the helium-4 A-GFF are comparable to those given by the impulse approximation, especially for the PS coupling using both the K-harmonic method and variational method. The exchange current contributions with the PS coupling for the charge form factor of helium-4, yield better agreement with the existing data over a broad range of momenta, especially when the Argonne 𝑣 14 potential including the D-wave admixture is used.

Bootstrapping gauge theories

We consider asymptotically free gauge theories with gauge group S U ( N c ) and N f quarks with mass m q ≪ Λ QCD that undergo chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. We propose a bootstrap method to compute the S matrix of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pions) that dominate the low-energy physics. For the important case of N c = 3 , N f = 2 , a numerical implementation of the method gives the phase shifts of the S 0 , P 1 and S 2 waves in good agreement with experimental results. The method incorporates gauge theory information ( N c , N f , m q , Λ QCD ) by using the form-factor bootstrap recently proposed by Karateev, Kuhn and Penedones together with a finite energy version of the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (SVZ) sum rules. At low energy we impose constraints from chiral symmetry breaking. The only low-energy numerical inputs are the pion mass m π and the quark and gluon condensates. Lattice calculation of light meson radiative leptonic decays

In this work, we perform a lattice QCD calculation of the branching ratios and the form factors\r\nof radiative leptonic decays P →ℓνℓγ (P= π,K) using Nf = 2+1 domain wall fermion ensembles\r\ngenerated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations at the physical pion mass. We adopt the\r\ninfinite-volume reconstruction (IVR) method, which extends lattice data to infinite volume and\r\neffectively controls the finite-volume effects. This study represents a first step toward a complete\r\ncalculation of radiative corrections to leptonic decays using the IVR method, including both real\r\nphoton emissions and virtual photon loops. For decays involving a final-state electron, collinear\r\nradiative corrections, enhanced by the large logarithmic factors such as ln(m2\r\nπ/m2e) and ln(m2K/m2e), can reach the level of O(10%) and are essential at the current level of theoretical and experimental precision. After including these corrections, our result for π →eνeγ agrees with the PIBETA measurement; for K →eνeγ, our results are consistent with the KLOE data and exhibit a 1.7σtension with E36; and for K →µνµγ, where radiative corrections are negligible, our results confirm the previously observed discrepancies between lattice results and the ISTRA/OKA measurements at large photon energies, and with the E787 results at large muon–photon angles.

Kaon leptonic and semileptonic decays with $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ fermions

Precision tests of the Standard Model (SM) currently show a deficit in first-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) unitarity. In this talk, we discuss progress towards a correlated analysis of the lattice-QCD inputs needed to test this relation with kaon data using highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) on the MILC $N_{f}=2+1+1$ configurations. We present the status of a new analysis of light-meson decay constant data where chiral-continuum fits are guided by staggered chiral perturbation theory (SChPT). The goal of SChPT is twofold: it allows us to use data not only at physical pion mass but also at unphysical masses. Moreover, it provides values of ChPT low energy constants (LECs) as well as their correlations. We also present a reanalysis of our previous kaon semileptonic form factor calculation, aiming to estimate correlations between the form factor and light-meson decay constants. We discuss the new methodology, new data included, and present some preliminary results.

Nonlocal chiral contributions to generalized parton distributions of the proton at nonzero skewness

We compute the one-loop contributions to spin-averaged generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the proton from pseudoscalar mesons with intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states at nonzero skewness. Our framework is based on nonlocal covariant chiral effective theory, with ultraviolet divergences regularized by introducing a relativistic regulator derived consistently from the nonlocal Lagrangian. Using the splitting functions calculated from the nonlocal Lagrangian, we find the nonzero skewness GPDs from meson loops by convoluting with the phenomenological pion GPD and the generalized distribution amplitude, and verify that these satisfy the correct polynomiality properties. We also compute the lowest two moments of GPDs to quantify the meson loop effects on the Dirac, Pauli, and gravitational form factors of the proton.
