Encapsulation of highly viscous CO 2 capture solvents for enhanced capture kinetics: Modeling investigation of mass transfer mechanisms

The encapsulation of highly viscous liquid-like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs) inside a gas permeable polymer to form SIPs (Solvent Impregnated Polymers) significantly enhanced the CO 2 capture kinetics of NOHMs, leading to a remarkable 50-fold increase in CO 2 flux compared to the neat NOHMs. To understand the mechanism for enhanced CO 2 mass transfer within these hybrid materials, kinetic modeling of CO 2 uptake into SIPs containing polyethylenimine functionalized NOHMs, denoted NPEI-SIP, was conducted. CO 2 mass transfer into NPEI-SIP films was found to conform, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a diffusion-controlled moving front model. The diffusion-controlled model was also used to simulate CO 2 uptake within a fixed bed containing polydisperse NPEI-SIP particles, and this model accurately predicted experimentally measured breakthrough curves at 25 °C and 50 °C. The 50-fold increase in gas flux was shown to be a consequence of the very large CO 2 permeability within the polymer–solvent composite. Furthermore, the increase in gas flux is also dependent on the diffusion–reaction regime in which the chemical solvent operates, and the largest improvement will occur when immobilizing solvents, such as NOHMs, which operate in the instantaneous-reaction regime. The CO 2 capacity (~3 mol CO 2 /kg) and saturation time (~5 min) of 430 μm SIP particles were comparable to popular CO 2 chemisorption materials such as amine grafted silicates, in spite of the slow kinetics of NOHM-I-PEI in liquid form (CO 2 saturation time ~24 h for a 1 mm thin film).

Ammonium-coordinated exchanger (ACE) functionalized silica sorbents for recovering/removing aqueous anionic contaminants

There are limited studies of functionalized silica anion exchange sorbents used for critical/heavy metal recovery/removal relative to polymeric and other inorganic materials. This work features ammonium-coordinated exchanger (ACE) anion exchange particle sorbents prepared by either acid-washing epoxy-crosslinked polyethylenimine (PEI) hydrogen bonded within/to a silica particle sorbent (two-step method) or reacting a di-chlorinated crosslinker, α,α-dichloro-p-xylene (DPX), with PEI within silica (single-step method). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of -NH 2 + ···Cl - and -NH 3 + ···Cl - groups, which removed oxyanionic species –arsenate, selenate, chromate, sulfate, phosphate, and nitrate– plus bromide from ideal solutions, authentic acid mine drainage (AMD), and authentic flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater. Affinity of the anions for ACE varied across single- and mixed-element solutions. However, affinity for CrO 4 2- was among the highest in both cases. Total anion uptake by the optimized ACE, PEI-E3-HCl_1.1, reached 1.2 mmol anion/g-sorb. (0.56 mmol CrO 4 2- /g), or ∼2.3 mmol negative charge/g-sorb. This was close to the 0.52 mmol CrO 4 2- /g of a commercial anion exchange resin. Near-consistent removal of 20–80 % of each anion from FGD during an eight-cycle adsorption-desorption (1 M NaCl) test predicted good ACE viability for testing under practical conditions at larger scale.

Engineering surface charges of nanofiltration membranes to maximize Li + /Mg 2+ separation properties

Polyamide-based nanofiltration (NF) membranes are attractive for Li + /Mg 2+ separation for lithium recovery from salt brine (containing mainly Mg 2+ ). However, Li + and Mg 2+ have similar hydration radii, resulting in a low separation factor (SF Li/Mg ). Herein, we demonstrate that SF Li/Mg can be significantly enhanced by optimizing the membrane surface positive charges. This results in an unexpected maximum SF Li/Mg at a solution pH slightly below its isoelectric point (IEP). Specifically, NF270 membrane was surface-grafted with 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (META) or polyethylenimine (PEI) using bio-adhesive dopamine, forming a thin, stable, charged layer (20–40 nm) on the surface. The effects of solution pH and surface modification on the surface zeta potential (ZP) and single- and mixed-salt Li + /Mg 2+ separation properties are thoroughly investigated. For example, the META grafting increases the ZP from 9.2 to 16 mV and SF Li/Mg by 130 % from 35 to 80 at pH 4, superior to the state-of-the-art commercial NF membranes. Furthermore, this surface modification occurs at ≈22 °C in aqueous solutions and can be utilized to enhance commercial modules for practical applications.

Effective removal of trace-level toxic metals from flue gas desulfurization wastewater using SiO 2 supported hydrogel sorbent

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater generated from coal-fired power plants contain potentially harmful heavy metal pollutants that pose a threat to public health and clean water. In this work, we present a water stable polyethylenimine-n,n’-methylenebisacrylamide (PEI-MBAA) functionalized SiO 2 solid sorbent material (PMS-1.2/1/4) and investigate its metal adsorption kinetics, selectivity, regenerability, and space velocity. The kinetic studies of six of the toxic heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Se, and Hg) prepared with single elements in Milli-Q water showed the effect of chemical bonding and intraparticle mass transfer resistance on the sorption process. The selectivity studies demonstrated the significant adsorption efficiency toward trace-level heavy metals (Se, Cd, U, Al, etc.) from authentic industrial FGD wastewater. Through five consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles with the FGD (uptake)-citrate (release)-based buffer pair, the sorbent showed high heavy metal removal ability and good reusability. The maximum flow rate for the removal of Se from industrial FGD wastewater was determined to be as high as 8 bed volumes/minute of the sorbent bed. Finally, the results demonstrate the PMS-1.2/1.4 sorbent is a promising candidate for the removal of heavy metals from practical aqueous solutions.

Influence of Clay size on corrosion protection by Clay nanocomposite thin films

In this work, the influence of clay platelet size on the corrosion barrier performance of highly-aligned polymer clay nanocomposite (PCN) thin films was examined. Layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of alternating branched polyethylenimine (PEI) and either laponite (LAP), montromorillonite (MMT) or vermiculite (VMT) clay platelets were assembled on mild steel plates to obtain 20 bilayer (BL) films and cross-linked using glutaraldehyde after deposition. The clay platelets were chosen based on their aspect ratio, approximately 30:1, 400:1, and 2000:1, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the coated steel plates during immersion showed corrosion rates and coating permeability followed LAP > MMT > VMT for up to 7 days of exposure in 0.6 M NaCl. The PEI/VMT films, ~250 nm thick, slowed corrosion by a factor of >1000 compared to bare steel. The results support the premise that high aspect ratio clay platelets can improve the corrosion barrier efficacy of LbL PCN films by decreasing film permeability and provide exceptional protection to steel in saline environments compared to other thin multilayer coatings and pretreatments.

Chemiresistor sensor based on ion-imprinted polymer (IIP)-functionalized rGO for Cd(II) ions in water

This study reports the design and development of a novel chemiresistor (CR) sensor using ion imprinted polymer (IIP)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) [IIP/rGO-CR] for cadmium ions (Cd(II)) determination in water. The sensor consisted of a CR transducer made of rGO channel bridging source and drain electrodes prepared by self-assembly and thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) on Au interdigitated electrodes chip fabricated on Si/SiO 2 substrate. The IIP was then grafted on rGO using surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with polyethylenimine (PEI) and methylacrylic acid (MAA) as dual functional monomers and Cd(II) ions as template through UV light-initiated copolymerization. The IIP functionalized on rGO acted as an effective recognition element that modulated the resistance of rGO-CR upon binding of Cd(II), enabling Cd(II) detection at ppb level in aqueous solutions. The prepared IIP/rGO-CR sensor worked effectively in the linear range of 2~200ppb and achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.83 ppb, which is lower than the World Health Organization guidelines of 3ppb for drinking water quality. The developed sensor of IIP/rGO-CR showed a high selectivity against a variety of trace and heavy metal ions found in water and good stability for up to 60 days when stored at room temperature for Cd(II) determination in water. Further, the sensor was successfully applied to analyzing Cd(II) spiked in tap, lake and river waters with a 94.5%–113.5% recovery, demonstrating a high degree of accuracy even in complex water samples. Finally, our results illustrated that the CR sensor of IIP functionalized rGO provides a potential platform for sensitive, robust and low-cost environmental analysis of Cd(II) in water.

Stability of Metal–Organic Framework-Supported Amines under Exposure to Ozone Generated from Air

Amine compounds supported on porous materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising performance for direct air capture (DAC) due to their enhanced affinity for CO 2 . Although features such as adsorption capacity and selectivity are paramount in these composites, their long-term stability has a major impact on the operating cost of DAC systems. In this work, changes in carbon capture performance, crystallinity, porosity and chemical environment of the constituting atoms of MOF-amine composites are explored after exposure to ozone and NOx impurities generated from corona discharge applied to air. From the obtained results, the stabilities of Mg 2 (dobpdc) (dobpdc 4– = 4,4′-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3′-dicarboxylate) grafted with ethylenediamine (en), N-methylethylenediamine (men), and N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (dmen), as well as MIL-101(Cr) MOF impregnated with polyethylenimine (PEI), are compared. A negative effect in the overall CO 2 adsorption capacity is observed for all MOF composites after exposure, as well as a decrease in the adsorption step pressure of CO 2 for Mg 2 (dobpdc) amine-grafted composites, as shown via dynamic gravimetric adsorption experiments. Spectroscopic analyses indicate that oxidation of amine groups through the formation of nitro functional groups occurs as well as a decrease in the electron-donation interaction between the supported amines and the metal nodes of the MOFs.

Gold-Nanocluster-Mediated Delivery of siRNA to Intact Plant Cells for Efficient Gene Knockdown

RNA interference, which involves the delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA), has been used to validate target genes, to understand and control cellular metabolic pathways, and to use as a "green" alternative to confer pest tolerance in crops. Conventional siRNA delivery methods such as viruses and Agrobacterium -mediated delivery exhibit plant species range limitations and uncontrolled DNA integration into the plant genome. Here, we synthesize polyethylenimine-functionalized gold nanoclusters (PEI-AuNCs) to mediate siRNA delivery into intact plants and show that these nanoclusters enable efficient gene knockdown. We further demonstrate that PEI-AuNCs protect siRNA from RNase degradation while the complex is small enough to bypass the plant cell wall. Consequently, AuNCs enable gene knockdown with efficiencies of up 76.5 ± 5.9% and 76.1 ± 9.5% for GFP and ROQ1, respectively, with no observable toxicity. Our data suggest that AuNCs can deliver siRNA into intact plant cells for broad applications in plant biotechnology.

Photoreactive Capture and Conversion of Dilute Carbon Dioxide into Synthetic Natural Gas

This study introduces a photoreactive system that integrates the capture of dilute CO 2 streams with their catalytic conversion to synthetic natural gas (CH 4 ), utilizing a Ru nanoparticle (NP)-doped TiO 2 composite loaded with linear polyethylenimine (L-PEI) and enhanced with plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN). This light-driven approach mitigates challenges that have plagued traditional thermal reactive carbon capture (RCC) methods, such as CO 2 slip and amine degradation. We demonstrate that L-PEI enables stable CO 2 capture and conversion, achieving ~70% conversion of captured CO 2 to CH 4 across multiple reaction cycles using nonflammable forming gas (~5% H 2 ) as the reductant. In contrast, branched PEI (B-PEI)-loaded composites exhibited significant catalyst deactivation after several RCC cycles. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging confirms that significant sintering of the Ru NPs occur in the B-PEI sample under RCC conditions, whereas their size remains stable in more rigid L-PEI composites. Technoeconomic analysis (TEA) estimates that CH 4 production using this system could cost less than $\$$5/kg based on current electrocatalytic H 2 prices. These results represent one of the most promising demonstrations of amine-based RCC employing dilute CO 2 sources to date.

Transport of polymer-coated metal–organic framework nanoparticles in porous media

Abstract Injecting fluids into deep underground geologic structures is a critical component to development of long-term strategies for managing greenhouse gas emissions and facilitating energy extraction operations. Recently, we reported that metal–organic frameworks are low-frequency, absorptive-acoustic metamaterial that may be injected into the subsurface to enhance geophysical monitoring tools used to track fluids and map complex structures. A key requirement for this nanotechnology deployment is transportability through porous geologic media without being retained by mineral-fluid interfaces. We used flow-through column studies to estimate transport and retention properties of five different polymer-coated MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles (NP) in siliceous porous media. When negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate coated nanoparticles (NP-PSS-70K) were transported in 1 M NaCl, only about 8.4% of nanoparticles were retained in the column. Nanoparticles coated with polyethylenimine (NP-PD1) exhibited significant retention (> 50%), emphasizing the importance of complex nanoparticle-fluid-rock interactions for successful use of nanofluid technologies in the subsurface. Nanoparticle transport experiments revealed that nanoparticle surface characteristics play a critical role in nanoparticle colloidal stability and as well the transport.

A chemical switch enabled autonomous two-stage crosslinking polymeric binder for high performance silicon anodes

Silicon (Si) is a promising high-capacity anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, the drastic volumetric changes of Si upon lithiation/delithiation hinder the practical use of Si anodes. Although adhesive polymeric binders, such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), mitigate this issue, the cycling performance of the fabricated Si anodes is still far from meeting the criteria of practical applications. In this study, we present a novel polymeric binder system for Si anodes consisting of PAA, a chemical switch (ammonia, NH 3 ), and a crosslinker (branched polyethylenimine, PEI). The crosslinking between PAA and PEI is switched off in the slurry, which can then be turned on during electrode drying. Interestingly, the crosslinking reaction consists of two stages: ionic cross-linking (PAA-PEI-i) and covalent crosslinking (PAA-PEI-c) at a higher temperature (e.g., 130 °C). In half-cells, Si anodes fabricated using the PAA-PEI-c binder show a 67% increase in capacity retention compared to PAA anodes over 150 cycles at C/3 rate. The PAA-PEI-c binder also outperforms PAA in full cells. In addition, the chemical switch controlled crosslinking binder system also facilitates the slurry making process by avoiding early crosslinking. This system requires no additional steps compared to the conventional electrode lamination process, showing enormous potential for direct adoption in large-scale manufacturing.

Thermal conductivity of multilayer polymer-nanocomposite thin films

The development of electrical insulators that are thermally conducting is critical for thermal management applications in many advanced electronics and electrical devices. Here, we synthesized polymer nanocomposite (PNC) films composed of polymers [polyethylenimine, poly(vinylamine), poly(acrylic acid), and poly(ethylene oxide)] and dielectric fillers (montmorillonite clay and hexagonal boron nitride) by layer-by-layer technique. The cross-plane thermal conductivity (k⊥) of the film was measured by the 3ω method. The effect of various factors such as film growth, filler type, filler volume fraction, polymer chemical structures, and temperature on the thermal conductivity is reported. The k⊥ of PNCs with thickness from 37 nm to 1.34 μm was found to be in the range of 0.11 to 0.21 ± 0.02 W m−1 K−1. The k⊥ values were found to be lower than the constituent polymer matrix. The experimental result is compared with existing theoretical models of nanocomposite systems to get insight into heat transfer behavior in such layered films composed of dielectrics and polymers.

Carbon capture in polymer-based electrolytes

Nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) have been proposed as excellent electrolytes for combined CO 2 capture and electrochemical conversion due to their conductive nature and chemical tunability. However, CO 2 capture behavior and transport properties of these electrolytes after CO 2 capture have not yet been studied. Here, we use a variety of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to explore the carbon speciation and transport properties of branched polyethylenimine (PEI) and PEI-grafted silica nanoparticles (denoted as NOHM-I-PEI) after CO 2 capture. Quantitative 13 C NMR spectra collected at variable temperatures reveal that absorbed CO 2 exists as carbamates (RHNCOO – or RR'NCOO – ) and carbonate/bicarbonate (CO 3 2– /HCO 3 – ). The transport properties of PEI and NOHM-I-PEI studied using 1 H pulsed-field-gradient NMR, combined with molecular dynamics simulations, demonstrate that coulombic interactions between negatively and positively charged chains dominate in PEI, while the self-diffusion in NOHM-I-PEI is dominated by silica nanoparticles. These results provide strategies for selecting adsorbed forms of carbon for electrochemical reduction.

CO2 Sorption in Aminopolymer-Based Direct Air Capture Composites Through Fluorescent Detection

Aminopolymer-mesoporous oxide composites are becoming widely recognized for their ability to adsorb CO2 directly from the air. However, a better fundamental understanding of the nature of these materials under different environmental operating conditions will be necessary before they become ubiquitous in industrial direct air capture (DAC) systems. For example, gas diffusion in general is coupled with polymer segmental mobility in these composites; diffusion is therefore affected by interactions of the polymer with the pore wall of the mesoporous oxide, by the relative humidity of the air, and by electrostatic crosslinks that develop as a function of CO2 sorption. Disentangling these and additional complicated effects in order to better optimize operating conditions is a major challenge for the field. Here, we present a method for quantifying the adsorption of CO2 and moisture in a polyethylenimine (PEI) - Al2O3 composite using infrared sensing while we simultaneously monitor polymer mobility with a fluorescent probe molecule doped into the composite. Both the fluorescence intensity and shape of the emission spectra are strongly dependent on the mobility of the supporting medium. We monitor the polymer mobility and CO2 adsorption kinetics across a series of different relative humidities (RH) with this technique, and we observed that the relative difference between polymer mobility and sorption kinetics from one RH to the next are quite dramatic. We interpret these results and discuss how they can be used to inform the design of more efficient DAC systems for real-world operating conditions.

Ultra-selective membrane composed of charge-stabilized fixed carrier and amino acid-based ionic liquid mobile carrier for highly efficient carbon capture

Membrane technology has been extensively studied for CO 2 capture applications, especially for flue gas sources. In the past decades, facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) have made breakthroughs overcoming the permeance-selectivity trade-off upper bound restricting traditional CO 2 separation membranes, but are still facing challenges towards practical applications, including limited performance, such as insufficient CO 2 /N 2 selectivity to achieve 95 % CO 2 dry-base purity by one step separation, and long-term stability. Herein, we designed and fabricated a novel FTM structure containing an ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium aminoacetate, [Emim][Gly]) as mobile CO 2 -carrier and a polymeric amine (polyethyleneimine, PEI) as fixed CO 2 -carrier. In this study, the fixed carrier is confined within a carbon nanotube (CNT) framework of 230 nm thickness via electrostatic forces adjusted by a polyelectrolyte (polystyrene sulfonate, PSS), while the mobile carrier diffuses freely within the CNT framework. After optimization of the membrane recipe and spray-coating fabrication procedure, following our previous work, the resulting CNT-PSS-PEI ~ IL membranes demonstrated an ultra-high CO 2 /N 2 selectivity up to 1,000 with CO 2 permeance up to 2,400 GPU (Gas Permeation Unit, 1 GPU = 3.348 × 10 -10 mol·s -1 ·m -2 ·Pa -1 ) under vacuum operation condition. Furthermore, one 100-cm 2 flat sheet membrane sample was prepared and exhibited one-stage CO 2 enrichment from 15 % to 95 % purity (dry-base) for the first time amongst all reported CO 2 separation membranes. The membrane retained a stable performance over 50-h operation period under vacuum condition. The extraordinary CO 2 separation performance illustrates the great potential of the CNT-PSS-PEI ~ IL membranes for flue gas carbon capture application.

Highly Rectifying Fluidic Diodes Based on Asymmetric Layer-by-Layer Nanofilms on Nanochannel Membranes

Nanochannel-based fluidic diodes display ion selectivity and ion-current rectification (ICR), which may prove important in energy harvesting and biosensors. This paper reports asymmetric functionalization of the outer surface of a flexible nanochannel polymer membrane to create fluidic diodes that give ICR. Layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption with cross-linking of only the underlying part of the polyelectrolyte nanofilm leads to a porosity step across the film. The combination of a high effective surface-charge density and the porosity step in the film leads to a remarkable maximum ICR factor of ~200 with a pH gradient across the film. Incorporation of pH-sensitive polyelectrolyte components enables the ICR factor to increase an order of magnitude on going from pH 8 to pH 3. Furthermore, the coated membrane shows excellent anion-selectivity. Thus, LbL adsorption with partial cross-linking provides a simple method for creating coated nanochannel membranes that serve as pH-responsive ionic diodes for potential chemical/biosensors.
