Research Priorities and Opportunities in United States Wholesale Electricity Markets

The power system is currently undergoing a number of changes, including a rapidly evolving resource mix, growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), more active consumer participation, increased deployment of energy storage and hybrid resources, and more advanced communication and control requirements. These changes in the power system present numerous technical, economic, implementation, and policy challenges and research opportunities for power system operators. To help address these challenges, a collaboration among five research institutions—Argonne National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Electric Power Research Institute, and Johns Hopkins University—has been established to provide technical assistance to the seven U.S. Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs). The 3-year project aims to leverage the advanced methods, tools, datasets, and resources of the collaborators to provide robust analytical support to address the high-priority market challenges that will be faced in the 2- to 10-year time horizon.

Analysis and evaluation of process and equipment in tasks 2 and 4 of the Low Cost Solar Array project

Several experimental and projected Czochralski crystal growing process methods were studied and compared to available operations and cost-data of recent production Cz-pulling, in order to elucidate the role of the dominant cost contributing factors. From this analysis, it becomes apparent that substantial cost reductions can be realized from technical advancements which fall into four categories: an increase in furnace productivity; the reduction of crucible cost through use of the crucible for the equivalent of multiple state-of-the-art crystals; the combined effect of several smaller technical improvements; and a carry over effect of the expected availability of semiconductor grade polysilicon at greatly reduced prices. A format for techno-economic analysis of solar cell production processes was developed, called the University of Pennsylvania Process Characterization (UPPC) format. The accumulated Cz process data are presented.

New results on the radio-far-infrared relation for galaxies

The radio-FIR relation has been decomposed into thermal bremsstrahlung-FIR and synchrotron-FIR relation for a sample of 31 galaxies. Both radio emission components are tightly correlated with the FIR emission for early and late-type spiral as well as irregular galaxies. It follows that any mixture of the radio components produces a tight universal radio-FIR relation. At high radio frequencies, thermal bremsstrahlung can dominate the radio emission over a large range of luminosities so that the slope of the radio-FIR relation approaches that of the thermal bremsstrahlung-FIR relation and is therefore close to unity (0.97 +/- 0.02). At lower frequencies, synchrotron emission dominates and the slope approaches that of the synchrotron-FIR ratio which is significantly steeper than unity (1.33 +/- 0.10). The results are consistent with a scenario in which the FIR luminosities of galaxies scale in direct proportion to the star formation rate.

Comparative Technoeconomic Analysis of Pathways for Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 with Methanol to Produce Methyl Formate

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction has promise as a technology that could help society reach carbon neutrality while producing valuable fuels and chemicals. Herein, the electrochemical synthesis of methyl formate, a product not observed in aqueous CO 2 electrolysis, has been analyzed by a rigorous technoeconomic model to evaluate its commercial viability. Methyl formate synthesis has been demonstrated with high faradaic efficiency through the electroreduction of CO 2 in methanol. Four competing approaches were analyzed: (1) Electroreduction of captured CO 2 in a dual CH 3 OH/H 2 O electrolyzer, (2) Direct electroreduction of flue gas CO 2 in a dual CH 3 OH/H 2 O electrolyzer, (3) Electroreduction of captured CO 2 in a CH 3 OH/CH 3 OH electrolyzer, and (4) Electroreduction of captured CO 2 in a H 2 O/H 2 O electrolyzer with a downstream CH 3 OH reactor. Sensitivity analyses, cost contour plots, and comparison plots were generated. The dual methanol/water electrolysis approach was the most cost-competitive, with a levelized cost of methyl formate below the present market price. Here, the all-methanol electrolysis route was more expensive due to increased methanol consumption and greater distillation costs. Methyl formate production through aqueous CO 2 electrolysis to formic acid with a secondary esterification reaction was by far the most expensive approach, primarily due to the energy-intensive nature of distilling formic acid from water.

Modeling the Cost of Onshore CO2 Pipeline Transport and Onshore CO2 Saline Storage

This paper describes the FECM/NETL CO2 Transport Cost Model (CO2_T_COM), a technoeconomic model of CO2 transport by pipeline, and the FECM/NETL CO2 Saline Storage Cost Model (CO2_S_COM), a technoeconomic model of storage of CO2 in a deep, subsurface saline formation. The results of applying CO2_T_COM to calculate break-even CO2 prices to transport CO2 at different mass flow rates and different distances are presented. Similarly, CO2_S_COM is used to calculate the break-even CO2 price for storing CO2 in 314 potential storage formations across the US. These break-even prices are used to construct cost-supply curves for CO2 storage which are presented on a national and regional basis. CO2_T_COM and CO2_S_COM are the most comprehensive open source technoeconomic models available for analyzing CO2 pipeline transport and CO2 saline storage. To be presented at the SPE?AAPG/SEG Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Conference in Houston, TX, March 11-13, 2024.

A normative price for a manufactured product: The SAMICS methodology. Volume 2: Analysis

The Solar Array Manufacturing Industry Costing Standards provide standard formats, data, assumptions, and procedures for determining the price a hypothetical solar array manufacturer would have to be able to obtain in the market to realize a specified after-tax rate of return on equity for a specified level of production. The methodology and its theoretical background are presented. The model is sufficiently general to be used in any production-line manufacturing environment. Implementation of this methodology by the Solar Array Manufacturing Industry Simultation computer program is discussed.

SAMICS: Input data preparation

The Solar Array Manufacturing Industry Costing Standards (SAMICS) provide standard formats, data, assumptions, and procedures for estimating the price that a manufacturer would have to charge for the product of a specified manufacturing process sequence. A line-by-line explanation is given of those standard formats which describe the economically important characteristics of the manufacturing processes and the technological structure of the companies and the industry. This revision provides an updated presentation of Format A Process Description, consistent with the October 1978 version of that form. A checklist of items which should be entered on Format A as direct expenses is included.

Evaluation of Contrail Reduction Strategies Based on Environmental and Operational Costs

This paper evaluates a set of contrail reduction strategies based on environmental and operational costs. A linear climate model was first used to convert climate effects of carbon dioxide emissions and aircraft contrails to changes in Absolute Global Temperature Potential, a metric that measures the mean surface temperature change due to aircraft emissions and persistent contrail formations. The concept of social cost of carbon and the carbon auction price from recent California's cap-and-trade system were then used to relate the carbon dioxide emissions and contrail formations to an environmental cost index. The strategy for contrail reduction is based on minimizing contrail formations by altering the aircraft's cruising altitude. The strategy uses a user-defined factor to trade off between contrail reduction and additional fuel burn and carbon dioxide emissions. A higher value of tradeoff factor results in more contrail reduction but also more fuel burn and carbon emissions. The strategy is considered favorable when the net environmental cost benefit exceeds the operational cost. The results show how the net environmental benefit varies with different decision-making time-horizon and different carbon cost. The cost models provide a guidance to select the trade-off factor that will result in the most net environmental benefit.

Analysis and evaluation in the production process and equipment area of the low-cost solar array project

The attributes of the various metallization processes were investigated. It is shown that several metallization process sequences will lead to adequate metallization for large area, high performance solar cells at a metallization add on price in the range of $6. to 12. m squared, or 4 to $.8/W(peak), assuming 15% efficiency. Conduction layer formation by thick film silver or by tin or tin/lead solder leads to metallization add-on prices significantly above the $6. to 12/m squared range c.) The wet chemical processes of electroless and electrolytic plating for strike/barrier layer and conduction layer formation, respectively, seem to be most cost effective.

Strong chemical tagging with APOGEE: 21 candidate star clusters that have dissolved across the Milky Way disc

ABSTRACT Chemically tagging groups of stars born in the same birth cluster is a major goal of spectroscopic surveys. To investigate the feasibility of such strong chemical tagging, we perform a blind chemical tagging experiment on abundances measured from APOGEE survey spectra. We apply a density-based clustering algorithm to the 8D chemical space defined by [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Si/Fe], [K/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [Mn/Fe], [Fe/H], and [Ni/Fe], abundances ratios which together span multiple nucleosynthetic channels. In a high-quality sample of 182 538 giant stars, we detect 21 candidate clusters with more than 15 members. Our candidate clusters are more chemically homogeneous than a population of non-member stars with similar [Mg/Fe] and [Fe/H], even in abundances not used for tagging. Group members are consistent with having the same age and fall along a single stellar-population track in log g versus Teff space. Each group’s members are distributed over multiple kpc, and the spread in their radial and azimuthal actions increases with age. We qualitatively reproduce this increase using N-body simulations of cluster dissolution in Galactic potentials that include transient winding spiral arms. Observing our candidate birth clusters with high-resolution spectroscopy in other wavebands to investigate their chemical homogeneity in other nucleosynthetic groups will be essential to confirming the efficacy of strong chemical tagging. Our initially spatially compact but now widely dispersed candidate clusters will provide novel limits on chemical evolution and orbital diffusion in the Galactic disc, and constraints on star formation in loosely bound groups.

Gas-rich meteorites - Possible evidence for origin on a regolith

The asymmetry of irradiation features of grains in the Kapoeta and Fayetteville meteorites suggests irradiation on a regolith before meteorite formation. Chondrules and broken grains require approximately 10,000 years of irradiation time between formation or fracturing and compaction into the meteorite. Shock erasure of tracks from irradiated Kapoeta feldspars requires a severe shock event during or after meteorite formation.

Study Non-Conventional Deep Eutectic Electrolytes for Lithium Ion Batteries [Poster]

In the field of energy storage, electrolytes are the materials or liquids used to transport ions or redox active chemicals to facilitate an electrochemical process. While conventional electrolytes are generally inexpensive and work well with lithium-ion batteries, they have many shortfalls however, such as corrosion of the cell, flammability, toxicity, price, and incompatibility with other metals. Our work highlights the formation of a novel deep eutectic electrolyte (DEE) based on methyl carbamate and lithium salts. This DEE shows good cycling performance with the potential for low temperature operation. This study provides insights into a relatively unexplored field of non-conventional electrolyte systems.

Phase 2 of the Array Automated Assembly Task for the Low Cost Solar Array Project

Two process specifications supplied by contractors were tested. The aluminum silk screening process resulted in cells comparable to those from sputtered Al. The electroless plating of contacts specification could be used only with extensive modification. Several experiments suggest that there is some degradation of the front junction during the Al back surface field (BSF) fabrication. A revised process sequence was defined which incorporates Al BSF formation. A cost analysis of this process yielded a selling price of $0.75/watt peak in 1980.

Recommendations concerning satellite-acquired earth resource data: 1982 report of the Data Management Subcommittee of the GEOSAT Committee, Incorporated

End user concerns about the content and accessibility of libraries of remote sensing data in general are addressed. Recommendations pertaining to the United States' satellite remote sensing programs urge: (1) the continuation of the NASA/EROS Data Center program to convert pre-1979 scenes to computer readable tapes and create a historical archive of this valuable data; (2) improving the EROS archive by adding geologically interesting scenes, data from other agencies (including previously classified data), and by adopting a policy to retire data from the archive; (3) establishing a computer data base inquiry system that includes remote sensing data from all publically available sources; (4) capability for prepurchase review and evaluation; (5) a flexible price structure; and (6) adoption of standard digital data products format. Information about LANDSAT 4, the status of worldwide LANDSAT receiving stations, future non-U.S. remote sensing satellites, a list of sources for LANDSAT data, and the results of a survey of GEOSAT members' remote sensing data processing systems are also considered.

Effect of oxidative breakers on organic matter degradation, contaminant mobility and critical mineral release during shale-fracturing fluid interactions in the Marcellus Shale

Oil and gas production from organic-rich shale formations has become viable through advancements in multistage hydraulic fracturing. However, fluctuations in oil and gas prices, coupled with the sharp decline in gas production after the initial days of fracturing operations, drive operators to devise strategies for enhancing hydrocarbon production. The use of highly reactive fracturing fluids that include strong oxidizing agents, also known as breakers, can potentially increase well productivity. The oxidative breakers are used to reduce the viscosity of gel-based fluids after the proppant is transported into fracture zones of the target formation. These breakers can also degrade the organic matter, enhancing the release of hydrocarbons. However, chemical byproducts generated by the interaction of oxidative breakers with the shale matrix have not been extensively studied. Here, this study investigated the fluid-rock interactions between Marcellus Shale and synthetic hydraulic fracturing fluid (HFF) solutions comprising three different oxidative breakers, i.e., ammonium persulfate, sodium bromate, and sodium hypochlorite, commonly used in the Appalachian Basin, USA. Our results demonstrate that the type of oxidizing breakers used in the HFF controlled the type and amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) produced. In all HFF reacted effluents, we observed the transformation of VOCs and the presence of organic acids in variable amounts. However, effluents from HFF containing sodium bromate and sodium hypochlorite breakers showed the presence of several halogenated organic compounds. Changes in major ions and mineralogy indicate that carbonate dissolution and barite precipitation were ubiquitous in all shale reacted effluents. Our results also demonstrate that the addition of oxidative breakers increased the concentration of several major and trace elements in the effluents. These elements fall under the critical mineral (CM) or critical element category due to their high demand in emerging technologies and susceptibility to supply chain disruption due to variety of factors. However, before oxidative breakers can be used at a larger field scale to enhance the release and recovery of CM and hydrocarbons, a better understanding is required of the potential environmental impacts associated with the generation and transformation of contaminants during breaker-fluid-rock interaction.
