Intelligent process mapping through systematic improvement of heuristics

The present system for automatic learning/evaluation of novel heuristic methods applicable to the mapping of communication-process sets on a computer network has its basis in the testing of a population of competing heuristic methods within a fixed time-constraint. The TEACHER 4.1 prototype learning system implemented or learning new postgame analysis heuristic methods iteratively generates and refines the mappings of a set of communicating processes on a computer network. A systematic exploration of the space of possible heuristic methods is shown to promise significant improvement.

Hot Deformation and Processing Maps of B{sub 4}C/6061Al Nanocomposites Fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering

We developed 3 vol.% B{sub 4}C/6061Al nanocomposites by spark plasma sintering. We then characterized their flow and hot deformation behaviors using isothermal compression tests at deformation temperatures of 673-823 K and strain rates of 0.001-1 s{sup −1}. Results indicated that their steady flow characteristic can be described by the Zener–Hollomon parameter (Z) as a hyperbolic-sine function of flow stress. Based on pinning effect from B{sub 4}C nanoparticles, the estimated activation energy was calculated to be 274.80 kJ/mol. At the unstable deformation condition (723 K/1 s{sup −1}) with high Z, flow localization appeared; the main softening mechanisms involved are dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization (DRX). At the stable deformation condition (823 K/0.001 s{sup −1}) with low Z, adequate DRX occurred. Based on the processing map and microstructure evolution, the optimum hot working conditions for B{sub 4}C/6061Al nanocomposites were determined to be a deformation temperature of 773-823 K and a strain rate of 0.001-0.003 s{sup −1}. These working conditions were verified by a hot extrusion test.

Mapping Process Model Results to Fracture Model Initial Conditions for Adhesive Bonding

A systematic approach is proposed for mapping adhesive bonding process outcomes to initial conditions for progressive damage analysis (PDA). Herein, two mapping procedures are developed: 1) direct mapping for residual stresses, strains, and deformations obtained from a process model; and 2) functional mapping for quantities such as bondline thickness, degree of cure, and porosity that are assumed to have a functional relationship with fracture toughness but are not discretely modeled in the PDA. The spatial distribution of functionally mapped quantities may be determined by process modeling or inspection. The functional maps between the quantity of interest and fracture toughness may be obtained from independent lower-scale numerical simulations or empirical test campaigns. The proposed mapping procedure links the adhesive bonding process to the structural performance. Therefore, by accounting for the effects of bondline nonuniformities in structural analysis, analytical predictive accuracy can be improved, and off-nominal conditions can be evaluated. The mapping procedures are demonstrated and verified with example problems.

Friction Stir Process Mapping Methodology

In FSW (friction stir welding), the weld process performance for a given weld joint configuration and tool setup is summarized on a 2-D plot of RPM vs. IPM. A process envelope is drawn within the map to identify the range of acceptable welds. The sweet spot is selected as the nominal weld schedule. The nominal weld schedule is characterized in the expected manufacturing environment. The nominal weld schedule in conjunction with process control ensures a consistent and predictable weld performance.

Discrimination of basic silicate rocks by recognition maps processed from aerial infrared data.

A method is presented which can be used to map silicate rock-type from aerial infrared data. The method has been partially tested over a sand quarry at Mill Creek, Oklahoma, in which highly siliceous targets were discriminated from nonsilicates in the scene. The technique is currently being tested experimentally on basic silicates. On the basis of the Mill Creek results and theoretical considerations, percent SiO2 differences as small as 14% should be detectable with the University of Michigan's currently available detectors.

The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the Risk Management Framework (RMF) codified in National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-37r1 for the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). This document, while accurate, is not an authoritative source on the management of federal information systems. However, the concepts and process discussed herein are representative of the data points used to compare the RMF with NIST’s Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity , otherwise known as the cybersecurity framework .

Domain knowledge-informed, process-mapping AI graph for designing Fe-based alloys

<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Continuous improvement in efficiency of a power plant relies on designing materials for use at increasingly higher temperature and/or pressure, for 100,000s hours of operation. Due to complexity, non-linearity and high-dimensionality of the problem, traditional Machine Learning (ML) approaches require unreasonably large datasets for the data-driven model development. Science-based material and process engineering complements hard data with, sometimes soft and intuitive, empirical domain knowledge. Artificial Intelligence (AI) was used in this study to incorporate such knowledge into computational graph architecture (process-mimicking artificial neuron design, causal layer and graph structures, ensemble modeling of latent states) and learning procedures (variable transformation, fuzzy physics pre-training and freezing of deep layers, virtual microstructure representation, and adversarial multi-objective optimization). The first alloys design pathways suggested by the AI tool (pyroMind) passed a preliminary engineering review on soundness and transparency.</span>

Designing alloys with process-mapping AI pre-trained on empirical knowledge

<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Accelerated materials design should match the recent trends in the product development cycles. Materials data analytics can be used to significantly shorten development time of specialized alloys needed for next generation energy applications. However, it faces a challenge of scarce data available for training ML models. Incorporation of the domain knowledge into deep-learning graph structure via fuzzy pre-training and causal process imitation presents a viable approach to developing accurate data-driven models and reliable alloy design tools, with limited datasets. Artificial Intelligence (AI) was used in this study to incorporate such knowledge in the domain-specific computational tool, pyroMind. The tool provides not only novel design ideas but also their interpretation via physics and engineering concepts.</span>

Mapping Process to Pattern in the Landscape Change of the Amazonian Frontier

Changes in land use and land cover are dynamic processes reflecting a sequence of decisions made by individual land managers. In developing economies, these decisions may be embedded in the evolution of individual households, as is often the case in indigenous areas and agricultural frontiers. One goal of the present article is to address the land use and land-cover decisions of colonist farmers in the Amazon Basin as a function, in part, of household characteristics. Another goal is to generalize the issue of tropical deforestation into a broader discussion on forest dynamics. The extent of secondary forest in tropical areas has been well documented in South America and Africa. Agricultural-plot abandonment often occurs in tandem with primary forest clearance and as part of the same decision-making calculus. Consequently, tropical deforestation and forest succession are not independent processes in the landscape. This article presents a framework that integrates them into a model of forest dynamics at household level, and in so doing provides an account of the spatial pattern of deforestation that has been observed in the Amazon's colonization frontiers.
