OptiMX

OptiMX is a GUI-oriented program with principal aim to be an easy to use, yet comprehensive, interactive accelerator optics design and analysis tool. It was originally developed starting in the 1990s as an MS Windows centric application using the commercial Borland OWL framework. In the spring of 2014, a decision was made to port OptiM to Qt, a modern, portable and open framework. As much as possible, the original interface was preserved. While a significant amount of refactoring was required, the underlying physics has been for the most, left unchanged. The custom plots of the original application have been replaced with functional equivalents based on a stable and well-established library (qwt). With very few minor exceptions the new refactored OptiMX should be a drop-in replacement for the original OWL version.

Convective and Turbulent Motions in Nonprecipitating Cu. Part II: LES Simulated Cloud Represented by a Starting Plume

The dynamic structure of a small trade wind cumulus (Cu) is analyzed using a novel approach. Cu developing in a shear-free environment is simulated by 10-m-resolution LES model with spectral bin microphysics. The aim is to clarify the dynamical nature of cloud updraft zone (CUZ) including entrainment and mixing in growing Cu. The validity of concept stating that a cloud at developing state can be represented by a parcel or a jet is tested. To investigate dynamical entrainment in CUZ performed by motions with scales larger than the turbulence scales, the modeled fields of air velocity were filtered by wavelet filter that separated convective motions from turbulent ones. Two types of objects in developing cloud were investigated: small volume ascending at maximal velocity (point parcel) and CUZ. It was found that the point parcel representing the upper part of cloud core is adiabatic. The motion of the air in this parcel ascending from cloud base determines cloud-top height. The top-hat (i.e., averaged) values of updraft velocity and adiabatic fraction in CUZ are substantially lower than those in the point parcel. Evaluation of the terms in the dynamical equation typically used in 1D cloud parcel models show that this equation can be applied for calculation of vertical velocities at the developing stage of small Cu, at least up to the heights of the inversion layer. Dynamically, the CUZ of developing cloud resembles the starting plume with the tail of nonstationary jet. Both the top-hat vertical velocity and buoyancy acceleration linearly increase with the height, at least up to the inversion layer. An important finding is that lateral entrainment of convective (nonturbulent) nature has a little effect on the top-hat CUZ velocity and cannot explain the vertical changes of conservative variables qt and θl. In contrast, entrained air lifting inside CUZ substantially decreases top-hat liquid water content and its adiabatic fraction. Possible reasons of these effects are discussed.

Packaging Capacity Calculation: Pu Oxide Packaging Options with the 2 Quart SAVY Container

This calculation supports programmatic efforts to Dilute and Dispose Pu. Metal is to be oxidized at LANL, then transported to SRS for dilution at SRS. Ultimately, the diluted oxide will be disposed of at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Currently 3013 containers are used to package the oxide, which are placed in to 9975 Type B shipping containers. The Oxide Packaging Technology Maturation Plan determined that a transition to the used of 2-qt SAVY containers placed in 9977 would increase efficiency in shipping and handling and increase programmatic flexibility. The 2-quart SAVY container meets DOE M 441.1 and TA-55 Documented Safety Analysis requirements for handling and storage of Pu oxide at LANL.

Corrosion Analysis of 121103072 (SAVY-4000)

A surveillance feedlist for fiscal year (FY) 2022 was developed with the intent to target containers with contents known to generate corrosive gasses. One SAVY-4000 (hereafter “SAVY”) container with a serial number 121103072 was selected due to the reasonable wattage and known molten salt extraction (MSE) material corrosive behavior. The material was measured at 3.08 W with approximately 200 g of material placed inside of the SAVY for 6.07 years. The inner packaging configuration included a ¼ Qt stainless steel slip top inner container and a sPVC bag-out bag enclosing the inner container. Visual observations of the container during retrieval revealed several concerning features on the exterior of the container, notably on the lid. Fig. 1 shows the container lid along with an inset image further magnifying the features of interest. The corroded tamper indicating device (TID) wire and the corroded radioactive material tag wire indicated that corrosive gas species for steel were produced during storage. Although the TID wire and rad tag wire are not the same composition as the SAVY body and lid, these are often used as an indicator of potential corrosion inside of the SAVY container. The oxide residing inside of the filter holes and significant buildup around one hole provided further evidence supporting the presence of corrosive species inside of the container.

Geant4 Visualization

Geant4 offers versatile visualization tools to study detector geometry, particle trajectories, and hits. These tools support both interactive and batch modes (e.g., vis.mac). With a unified interface, Geant4 integrates various graphics systems such as G4VisExecutive, OpenGL, Qt, HepRApp, DAWN, VTK, and ToolsSG. Advanced examples, including the ICRP145 Human Phantoms and the gMocren tool, highlight its applications in medical research and simulation and as well as radiation protection and shielding studies. These features make Geant4 a robust framework for exploring particle interactions and supporting domain-specific use cases.

LHC Event Generation in the Exascale Era

MCFM is a dedicated Monte-Carlo simulation program for collider phenomenology at highest energies. Designed during the Tevatron era, it has successfully incorporated the latest developments needed for LHC precision calculations and remained on the forefront of collider phenomenology. The Fortran code includes interfaces to modern PDF and loop reduction libraries but has been unchanged structurally compared to the earlier versions. Parallel computing has been enabled using OpenMP and MPI. MCFM provides numerically highly stable one-loop amplitudes and superior phase-space efficiency, leading to excellent performance in NXLO calculations using jettiness or qT subtraction techniques for IR regularization.
