Performance Assessment of Pakistani Central Receiver Plant Case Study Using Aimpoint Strategy Optimization Tools

Pakistan has a high potential for both photovoltaic and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) deployment to meet its energy requirements. Previous feasibility studies have shown that a variety of CSP technologies are both technically and economically viable in the Pakistani climate and can significantly mitigate the country's current lack of grid reliability. This work aims to enhance the performance of a previously designed Central Receiver System (CRS) plant for Pakistan using state-of-the-art aimpoint optimization methods. Results from our case study show that optimized aiming strategies have increased practicality due to their adherence to flux limitations on the receiver, and offer ~2.4% more thermal energy delivered to the receiver for the Pakistani case study compared to modern performance characterization software, translating to up to 149 additional hours of nameplate-capacity production to address the shortfall in an electricity-starved market.

Adaptive control of wave energy converters

A wave energy capture system deployed in water converts mechanical motion induced by waves in the water to electrical energy. A controller of the wave energy capture system receives input regarding real-time wave conditions in a vicinity of the wave energy capture system. The controller applies a control model to the received input to select a value of a control parameter for the wave energy capture system, where the control model includes a model that has been trained using machine learning to take wave condition data as input and to output control parameter values selected based on the wave condition data in order to increase an amount of energy captured by the wave energy capture system. The controller implements the selected value of the control parameter on the wave energy capture system.

Software defined networking moving target defense honeypot

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and storage media for thwarting cyber-attacks and data theft. A computing system receives packets and compares with a configuration resource. The computing system determines that the packet does not match the configuration resource and transmits a packet to a decoy environment via an SDN switch. The decoy environment is configured to generate time-out, service unavailable, or restricted access messages. In some embodiments, the computing system determines the packet does match the configuration and transmits the packet to a production network via an SDN switch. The SDN switch is communicatively connected to the decoy environment through a first channel and communicatively connected to a production environment through a separate second channel. The computing system is further configured to create and transmit to the SDN switch, rules to manage transmitting the packet to either the decoy environment or the production environment.

National Weather Service Radiosonde Evaluation Field Campaign Report

The purpose of the campaign was to perform a full evaluation of participating vendor’s radiosondes to qualify for potential use in the National Weather Service (NWS) upper air field operations. The NWS has specific requirements that vendors systems were evaluated against to determine if the vendor’s radiosonde performs within specifications. For this evaluation, the NWS was pursuing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) ground/tracking systems in the 403 MHz frequency band over the previously used Telemetry Receiving System (TRS) and house-built software using the 1680 MHz frequency. The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory served as the warm and dry test region. The radiosondes were assessed for precision of the radiosonde (unit under test versus itself) and accuracy of the radiosonde’s humidity measurements (unit under test versus a cryogenic frostpoint hygrometer [CFH]).

Remote quantum state transfer for qubits with different frequencies

A quantum communication system includes a first quantum transceiver, a second quantum transceiver, and a quantum communication mediator (QCM) system. The transceivers have different resonant frequencies or physical systems. The QCM system receives an initial quantum signal from the first quantum transceiver. The QCM system transfers a quantum state of the initial quantum signal to a first mechanical signal and then from the first mechanical signal to a first pair of optical signals by way of a first three-wave mixing process. The QCM transfers the quantum state to a second pair of optical signals from the first pair by way of a four-wave mixing process. The QCM transfers the quantum state from the second pair of optical signals to a second mechanical signal by way of a second three-wave mixing process. The QCM transfers the quantum state from the second mechanical signal to a final quantum signal by mechanical transduction.

Computed axial lithography optimization system

A system for determining a light intensity field for use in manufacturing a 3D object from a volume of material. The system receives a 3D specification of a 3D geometry for the 3D object that specifies voxels within the volume that contain material that is to be part of the 3D object. The system employs a cost function for effectiveness of a light intensity field in manufacturing the 3D object. The cost function may be an adjoint of an Attenuated Radon Transform that models an energy dose that each voxel would receive during manufacture of the 3D object using the light intensity field. The system applies an optimization technique that employs the cost function to generate a measure of the effectiveness of possible light intensity fields and outputs an indication of a light intensity field that will be effective in manufacturing the 3D object.

Development of an Energy Efficient and Cost Effective Autonomous Vehicle Research Platform

Commercialization of autonomous vehicle technology is a major goal of the automotive industry, thus research in this space is rapidly expanding across the world. However, despite this high level of research activity, literature detailing a straightforward and cost-effective approach to the development of an AV research platform is sparse. To address this need, we present the methodology and results regarding the AV instrumentation and controls of a 2019 Kia Niro which was developed for a local AV pilot program. This platform includes a drive-by-wire actuation kit, Aptiv electronically scanning radar, stereo camera, MobilEye computer vision system, LiDAR, inertial measurement unit, two global positioning system receivers to provide heading information, and an in-vehicle computer for driving environment perception and path planning. Robotic Operating System software is used as the system middleware between the instruments and the autonomous application algorithms. After selection, installation, and integration of these components, our results show successful utilization of all sensors, drive-by-wire functionality, a total additional power* consumption of 242.8 Watts (*Typical), and an overall cost of $118,189 USD, which is a significant saving compared to other commercially available systems with similar functionality. This vehicle continues to serve as our primary AV research and development platform.

Design Evaluation of a Next-Generation High-Temperature Particle Receiver for Concentrating Solar Thermal Applications

High-temperature particle receivers are being developed to achieve temperatures in excess of 700 °C for advanced power cycles and solar thermochemical processes. This paper describes designs and features of a falling particle receiver system that has been evaluated and tested at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. These advanced designs are intended to reduce heat losses and increase the thermal efficiency. Novel features include aperture covers, active air flow, particle flow obstructions, and optimized receiver shapes that minimize advective heat losses, increase particle curtain opacity and uniformity, and reduce cavity wall temperatures. Control systems are implemented in recent on-sun tests to maintain a desired particle outlet temperature using an automated closed-loop proportional–integral–derivative controller. These tests demonstrate the ability to achieve and maintain particle outlet temperatures approaching 800 °C with efficiencies between 60 and 90%, depending on incident power, mass flow, and environmental conditions. Lessons learned regarding the testing of design features and overall receiver operation are also presented.

Chiral kinematic theory and converse vortical effects

Response theories in condensed matter typically describe the response of an electron fluid to external electromagnetic fields, while perturbations on neutral particles are often designed to mimic such fields. Here, we study the response of fermions to a space-time-dependent velocity field, thereby sidestepping the issue of gauge charge. First, we use a semiclassical chiral kinematic theory to obtain the local density of current and extract the orbital magnetization. The theory immediately predicts a "converse vortical effect," defined as an orbital magnetization driven by linear velocity. It receives contributions from magnetic moments on the Fermi surface and the Berry curvature of the occupied bands. Then, transcending semiclassics via a complementary Kubo formalism reveals that the uniform limit of a clean system receives only the Berry curvature contribution while other limits sense the Fermi surface magnetic moments too. We propose CoSi as a candidate material and suggest magnetometry of a sample under a thermal gradient to detect the effect. Overall, our study sheds light on the effects of a space-time-dependent velocity field on electron fluids and paves the way for exploring quantum materials using new probes and perturbations.

Thermal shock resistance of multilayer silicon carbide receiver tubes for 800°C molten salt concentrating solar power application

CSP power tower receiver systems during rapid transient weather periods can be vulnerable to thermal shock conditions from rain that which can facilitate the onset of leaks and failures that can have catastrophic consequences. Silicon carbide (SiC) materials have attractive receiver application characteristics for being light weight, having high-strength and excellent thermal shock resistance performance which make them a particularly good fit for receiver absorber materials in CSP. In this investigation, the performance characteristics of Ceramic Tubular Products (CTP) SiC ceramic matrix composite (CMC), multilayered tubes were explored with respect to thermal shock performance for solar receiver applications in next generation CSP plants. Here, thermal shock testing was performed at the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Solar Furnace facility using a dynamic stage and thermal shock tube test setup. The tubes tested under incident solar heat flux of 100 W/cm2 were heated with inner tube temperatures reaching approximately 800 °C, with outer temperatures exceeding or just reaching 1000 El for the multilayer and monolithic SiC tubes respectively. The tubes were then quenched with simulated rain. The tubes were then cooled and subjected to hoop stress analysis using an Instron device to assess their subsequent mechanical strength. Furthermore, the on-sun study experimental results indicate an average of 24.2% and 97% higher hoop strength for the CMC tubes than those composed of monolithic SiC and aluminum oxide (A1203) respectively.

Ray-tracing analysis for cross-polarization scattering diagnostic on MAST-upgrade spherical tokamak

A combined Doppler backscattering/cross-polarization scattering (DBS/CPS) system is being deployed on MAST-U for simultaneous measurements of local density turbulence, turbulence flows, and magnetic turbulence. In this design, CPS shares the probing beam with the DBS and uses a separate parallel-viewing receiver system. In this study, we utilize a modified GENRAY 3D ray-tracing code to simulate the propagation of the probing and scattered beams. The contributions of different scattering locations along the entire beam trajectories are considered, and the corresponding local B̃ wavenumbers are estimated using the wavevector matching criterion. The wavenumber ranges of the local B̃ that are detectable to the CPS system are explored for simulated L- and H-mode plasmas.
