Elucidating the Role of Single-Atom Pd for Electrocatalytic Hydrodechlorination

In this study, we loaded Pd catalysts onto a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support in an atomically dispersed fashion [i.e., Pd single-atom catalysts (SACs) on rGO or Pd 1 /rGO] via a facile and scalable synthesis based on anchor-site and photoreduction techniques. The as-synthesized Pd 1 /rGO significantly outperformed the Pd nanoparticle (Pdnano) counterparts in the electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination of chlorinated phenols. Downsizing Pd nano to Pd 1 leads to a substantially higher Pd atomic efficiency (14 times that of Pdnano), remarkably reducing the cost for practical applications. The unique single-atom architecture of Pd 1 additionally affects the desorption energy of the intermediate, suppressing the catalyst poisoning by Cl – , which is a prevalent challenge with Pdnano. Characterization and experimental results demonstrate that the superior performance of Pd 1 /rGO originates from (1) enhanced interfacial electron transfer through Pd–O bonds due to the electronic metal–support interaction and (2) increased atomic H (H*) utilization efficiency by inhibiting H 2 evolution on Pd 1 . Furthermore, this work presents an important example of how the unique geometric and electronic structure of SACs can tune their catalytic performance toward beneficial use in environmental remediation applications.

Low-temperature dechlorination of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for production of H 2 and carbon materials using liquid metal catalysts

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is ubiquitous in everyday life; however, it is not recycled because it degrades uncontrollably into toxic products above 250°C. Therefore, it is of interest to controllably dechlorinate PVC at mild temperatures to generate narrowly distributed carbon materials. We present a catalytic route to dechlorinate PVC (~90% reduction of Cl content) at mild temperature (200°C) to produce gas H 2 (with negligible coproduction of corrosive gas HCl) and carbon materials using Ga as a liquid metal (LM) catalyst. A LM was used to promote intimate contact between PVC and the catalytic sites. During dechlorination of PVC, Cl is sequestrated in the carbonaceous solid product. Later, chlorine is easily removed with an acetone wash at room temperature. The Ga LM catalyst is reusable, outperforms a traditional supported metal catalyst, and successfully converts (untreated) discarded PVC pipe.

Dehalogenation of Chlorinated Ethenes to Ethene by a Novel Isolate, “ Candidatus Dehalogenimonas etheniformans”

Dehalococcoides mccartyi strains harboring vinyl chloride (VC) reductive dehalogenase (RDase) genes are keystone bacteria for VC detoxification in groundwater aquifers, and bioremediation monitoring regimens focus on D. mccartyi biomarkers. We isolated a novel anaerobic bacterium, “Candidatus Dehalogenimonas etheniformans” strain GP, capable of respiratory dechlorination of VC to ethene. This bacterium couples formate and hydrogen (H2) oxidation to the reduction of trichloro-ethene (TCE), all dichloroethene (DCE) isomers, and VC with acetate as the carbon source. Cultures that received formate and H2 consumed the two electron donors concomitantly at similar rates. A 16S rRNA gene-targeted quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay measured growth yields of (1.2 ± 0.2) × 10 8 and (1.9 ± 0.2) × 10 8 cells per μmol of VC dechlorinated in cultures with H 2 or formate as electron donor, respectively. About 1.5-fold higher cell numbers were measured with qPCR targeting cerA, a single-copy gene encoding a putative VC RDase. A VC dechlorination rate of 215 ± 40 μmol L -1 day -1 was measured at 30°C, with about 25% of this activity occurring at 15°C. Increasing NaCl concentrations progressively impacted VC dechlorination rates, and dechlorination ceased at 15 g NaCl L -1 . During growth with TCE, all DCE isomers were intermediates. Tetrachloroethene was not dechlorinated and inhibited dechlorination of other chlorinated ethenes. Carbon monoxide formed and accumulated as a metabolic by-product in dechlorinating cultures and impacted reductive dechlorination activity. Finally, the isolation of a new Dehalogenimonas species able to effectively dechlorinate toxic chlorinated ethenes to benign ethene expands our understanding of the reductive dechlorination process, with implications for bioremediation and environmental monitoring.

Palladium Single-Atom (In)Stability Under Aqueous Reductive Conditions

Here, we investigate the stability and performance of single-atom Pd on TiO 2 for the selective dechlorination of 4-chlorophenol. A challenge inherent to single atoms is their high surface free energy, which results in a tendency for the surface migration and aggregation of metal atoms. This work evaluates various factors affecting the stability of Pd single-atoms, including atomic dispersion, coordination environment, and substrate properties, under reductive aqueous conditions. The transition from single atoms to clusters vastly enhanced dechlorination kinetics without diminishing carbon–chlorine bond selectivity. X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis using both in situ and ex situ conditions followed the dynamic transformation of single atoms into amorphous clusters, which consist of a unique unsaturated coordination environment and few nanometer diameter. Importantly, the intricate relationship between stability and performance underscores the vital role of detailed characterization to properly determine the true active species for dehalogenation reactions.

Controlling selectivity for dechlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) with (xantphos)RhCl

Reaction of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with 5 equiv. of triethyl silane in THF, in the presence of in situ generated (xantphos)RhCl catalyst, results in partial reduction of PVC via hydrodechlorination to yield poly(vinyl chloride-co-ethylene). Increasing catalyst loading or using N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) as a solvent both diminished selectivity for hydrodechlorination, promoting competitive dehydrochlorination reactions. Reaction of PVC with 2 equiv. of sodium formate in THF in the presence of (xantphos)RhCl affords excellent selectivity for hydrodechlorination along with complete PVC dechlorination, yielding polyethylene-like polymers. Higher catalyst loadings were necessary to activate PVC towards reduction in this case. In contrast, reaction of PVC with 1 equiv. of NaH in DMA, in the presence of (xantphos)RhCl, exhibited good selectivity for dehydrochlorination, as well as much higher reaction rates. These results combined shed light on the interplay between critical reaction parameters that control PVC's mode of reactivity.

Fluidized bed coal desulfurization

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted on two high volatile bituminous coals in a bench scale batch fluidized bed reactor. Chemical pretreatment and posttreatment of coals were tried as a means of enhancing desulfurization. Sequential chlorination and dechlorination cum hydrodesulfurization under modest conditions relative to the water slurry process were found to result in substantial sulfur reductions of about 80%. Sulfur forms as well as proximate and ultimate analyses of the processed coals are included. These studies indicate that a fluidized bed reactor process has considerable potential for being developed into a simple and economic process for coal desulfurization.

Modulating Iron Crystals with Lattice Chalcophile‐Siderophile Elements for Selective Dechlorinations Over Hydrogen Evolution

Selective dechlorination of organic chlorides over hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a challenge because of their coincidence. Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nFe 0 ) draws a promising picture of in situ groundwater dechlorination, but its indiscriminate reactivity limits the application. Here, nFe 0 crystals are designed with electron shuttles and improved hydrophobic nature based on elemental chalcophile-siderophile characteristics, where chalcophile-siderophile S served as a bridge to allow impregnating nFe 0 crystals with weakly siderophile and strongly chalcophile Cu. Even impregnations of lattice chalcophile-siderophile elements into the nFe 0 crystals are evidenced at both intraparticle and individual-particle levels. The modulated Fe microenvironment and physicochemical properties broke the reactivity-selectivity-longevity-stability trade-off. Compared to nFe 0 , superhydrophobic Cu─S─nFe 0 with lattice expansion promoted dechlorination by 20-fold but inhibited HER by 150-fold, utilizing ≈80–100% electrons from the Fe 0 reservoir. This work demonstrates the concept of engineering nFe 0 lattice with tunable structure-property relationships, mimicking reductive dehalogenases by selectively interacting with halocarbon functional groups for efficient dehalogenation and sustainable groundwater remediation.

Enhanced Catalytic Dechlorination of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and H2 Production Enabled by Synergistic Gaδ+/Ga0 Active Sites in Liquid Metal Particles

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is ubiquitous yet challenging to recycle due to its tendency to thermally decompose above 250 °C, releasing toxic, corrosive chlorinated compounds, and its inability to melt. Here, we report a catalytic strategy for PVC upcycling at 160 °C using gallium liquid metal particles (Ga-LMP) featuring a dynamic Ga-GaOOH core–shell architecture. These catalysts enable concurrent dechlorination and hydrogen evolution, yielding up to 7% H2 (based on initial hydrogen atoms in PVC) along with a highly dechlorinated (>95%) carbonaceous solid and aqueous HCl. Mechanistic investigations combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state NMR, inelastic neutron scattering, and ab initio molecular dynamics reveal a synergistic interplay between Gaδ+ sites in the GaOOH shell and metallic Ga0 in the core. Cationic Ga initiates C–Cl bond activation and HCl formation, while progressive reduction of the shell exposes Ga0 sites that promote C–H activation and H2 evolution. Control experiments with a Ga salt and bulk Ga liquid metal confirmed that neither oxidation state alone can achieve both transformations efficiently. This work establishes a dynamic dual-site paradigm for liquid metal catalysis, in which the in situ evolution and coexistence of oxidized and metallic species enable sequential and cooperative bond activation pathways. These findings provide a general design principle for novel liquid metal catalysts that target challenging polymer transformations under mild conditions.
