Large plasmaspheric electric fields at L approximately 2 measured by the S3-3 satellite during strong geomagnetic activity

Large plasmaspheric electric fields at L is approximately 2 measured by the S3-3 satellite during strong geomagnetic activity are reported. Since these measurements have amplitudes comparable to those of the local corotation electric field, during such events the plasmasphere is expected to get strongly altered event at such low L-values. Furthermore, those measurements could contribute to the understanding of the physics of the convection/electric field penetration to the low latitude plasmaphere as well as the disturbed dynamo, during strong geomagnetic activity. For this purpose, critical parameters related to geomagnetic activity are also presented for the reported electric field events.

Accessing Data Stored in Amazon S3 Using the Hyrax OPeNDAP Server

For three years we have been investigating data storage and retrieval in the Amazon Cloud, striving to optimize both storage structures and (cache-enhanced retrieval processes. These optimizations are hidden from data users, who simply employ the Data Access Protocol (DAP), a popular, Web-based Application Programmer Interface (API) developed by OPeNDAP. We present our collected findings and their realization in the Hyrax data server. Specific techniques include caching data on spinning disk; accessing sharded data in place; optimizing the organizational structures for data within the flat key-value space of Simple Storage Service (S3); and employing an API extension that permits simultaneous operations on many datasets in a single request.

A Ceph S3 Object Data Store for HEP

We present a novel data format design that obviates the need for data tiers by storing individual event data products in column objects. The objects are stored and retrieved through Ceph S3 technology, with a layout designed to minimize metadata volume and maximize data processing parallelism. Performance benchmarks of data storage and retrieval are presented.

Materials Data on S3(NCl)2 by Materials Project

S3N2Cl2 crystallizes in the monoclinic P2_1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent N4+ sites. In the first N4+ site, N4+ is bonded in a bent 120 degrees geometry to two S2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.57 Å) and one longer (1.64 Å) N–S bond length. In the second N4+ site, N4+ is bonded in a bent 120 degrees geometry to two S2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.56 Å) and one longer (1.62 Å) N–S bond length. There are three inequivalent S2- sites. In the first S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted water-like geometry to two N4+ and two equivalent Cl1- atoms. There are one shorter (2.76 Å) and one longer (3.53 Å) S–Cl bond lengths. In the second S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one N4+ and two equivalent Cl1- atoms. There are one shorter (2.93 Å) and one longer (3.48 Å) S–Cl bond lengths. In the third S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted water-like geometry to one N4+ and three Cl1- atoms. There are a spread of S–Cl bond distances ranging from 2.22–3.55 Å. There are two inequivalent Cl1- sites. In the first Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one S2- atom. In the second Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to six S2- atoms.

Structural dynamics in the water and proton channels of photosystem II during the S2 to S3 transition

Abstract Light-driven oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is catalyzed by the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in Photosystem II (PS II). This multi-electron, multi-proton catalysis requires the transport of two water molecules to and four protons from the OEC. A high-resolution 1.89 Å structure obtained by averaging all the S states and refining the data of various time points during the S 2 to S 3 transition has provided better visualization of the potential pathways for substrate water insertion and proton release. Our results indicate that the O1 channel is the likely water intake pathway, and the Cl1 channel is the likely proton release pathway based on the structural rearrangements of water molecules and amino acid side chains along these channels. In particular in the Cl1 channel, we suggest that residue D1-E65 serves as a gate for proton transport by minimizing the back reaction. The results show that the water oxidation reaction at the OEC is well coordinated with the amino acid side chains and the H-bonding network over the entire length of the channels, which is essential in shuttling substrate waters and protons.

N-S3 Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) Cosimulation Framework [SWR-24-54]

This is a vehicular networking simulator designed to enable synchronized network simulation with vehicle traffic simulation software. The communications model is based on the 3GPP LTE-V2X Mode 4 protocol, but includes several other wireless network protocol models as well. This simulator includes both a V2X network simulation implemented in ns-3 as well as an interface to automatically configure, run, and interact with a set of ns-3 instances based on network size and available hardware. This software has been tested with Aimsun NEXT 2.0 simulator (with V2X SDK), but uses a generic interface for compatibility with any comparable vehicle traffic simulator across the HELICS co-simulation framework. This software is intended as a generalized extension to vehicle traffic simulation, and does not model any vehicle traffic on its own.

CORRIGENDUM to Figures S3-S4 of "Quasi-stationary Planetary Scale Waves in Modern Climate Models"

In addition to fixing the color-coding legend, the new figures plot Fourier phase in a more easily recognizable format: polar coordinates rather than Cartesian coordinates. The same phase data is displayed—indicating the position of the first ridge to the east of the prime meridian—but the new plots avoid unphysical jumps, e.g. from +180° to -180° as longitude increases across the International Dateline. A slight disadvantage of the new format is that each hemisphere requires a separate plot. The wavenumber-1 Northern Hemisphere phase plots give, in effect, a view from above the North Pole, with Eurasia at the top and North America at the bottom. Wavenumber-1 Southern Hemisphere plots give an analogous view from the South Pole. Plots for higher wavenumbers, however, wrap around at fractions of 360° (180°, 120°, ...) and cannot be interpreted as a geographical view.
