Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 2: System engineering, part 1, final report

All elements of the TDRS system were studied with emphasis on the design of a 3-axis stabilized satellite, and a telecommunication system optimized for support of low and medium data rate user spacecraft constrained to be launched on a Delta 2914. The research is reported to upgrade the spacecraft design to provide telecommunications support low, medium and high data rate users, considering launches with the Atlas/Centaur and the space shuttle. Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 5: TDRS spacecraft design, part 1

A dual spin stabilized TDR spacecraft design is presented for low data rate (LDR) and medium data rate (MDR) user spacecraft telecommunication relay service. The relay satellite provides command and data return channels for unmanned users together with duplex voice and data communication channels for manned user spacecraft. TDRS/ground links are in the Ku band. Command links are provided at UHF for LDR users and S band for MDR users. Voice communication channels are provided at UHF/VHF for LDR users and at S band for MDR users. The spacecraft is designed for launch on the Delta 2914 with system deployment planned for 1978. This volume contains a description of the overall TDR spacecraft configuration, a detailed description of the spacecraft subsystems, a reliability analysis, and a product effectiveness plan.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study, part 1. Volume 1: Summary volume

Study efforts directed at defining all TDRS system elements are summarized. Emphasis was placed on synthesis of a space segment design optimized to support low and medium data rate user spacecraft and launched with Delta 2914. A preliminary design of the satellite was developed and conceptual designs of the user spacecraft terminal and TDRS ground station were defined. As a result of the analyses and design effort it was determined that (1) a 3-axis-stabilized tracking and data relay satellite launched on a Delta 2914 provides telecommunications services considerably in excess of that required by the study statement; and (2) the design concept supports the needs of the space shuttle and has sufficient growth potential and flexibility to provide telecommunications services to high data rate users. Recommendations for further study are included.

Analysis of Formation Flying in Eccentric Orbits Using Linearized Equations of Relative Motion

Geometrical methods for formation flying design based on the analytical solution to Hill's equations have been previously developed and used to specify desired relative motions in near circular orbits. By generating relationships between the vehicles that are intuitive, these approaches offer valuable insight into the relative motion and allow for the rapid design of satellite configurations to achieve mission specific requirements, such as vehicle separation at perigee or apogee, minimum separation, or a specific geometrical shape. Furthermore, the results obtained using geometrical approaches can be used to better constrain numerical optimization methods; allowing those methods to converge to optimal satellite configurations faster. This paper presents a set of geometrical relationships for formations in eccentric orbits, where Hill.s equations are not valid, and shows how these relationships can be used to investigate formation designs and how they evolve with time.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 4: TDRS system operation and control and telecommunications service system, part 1

Major study areas treated in this volume are: 1) operations and control and 2) the telecommunication service system. The TDRS orbit selection, orbital deployment, ground station visibility, sequence of events from launch to final orbit position, and TDRS control center functions required for stationkeeping, repositioning, attitude control, and antenna pointing are briefly treated as part of the operations and control section. The last topic of this section concerns the operations required for efficiently providing the TDRSS user telecommunication services. The discussion treats functions of the GSFC control and data processing facility, ground station, and TDRS control center. The second major portion of this volume deals with the Telecommunication Service System (TSS) which consists of the ground station, TDRS communication equipment and the user transceiver. A summary of the requirements and objectives for the telecommunication services and a brief summary of the TSS capabilities is followed by communication system analysis, signal design, and equipment design. Finally, descriptions of the three TSS elements are presented.

Satellite Power Systems (SPS) concept definition study. Volume 5: Special emphasis studies

Satellite configurations based on the Satellite Power System baseline requirements were analyzed and a preferred concept selected. A satellite construction base was defined, precursor operations incident to establishment of orbital support facilities identified, and the satellite construction sequence and procedures developed. Rectenna construction requirement were also addressed. Mass flow to orbit requirements were revised and traffic models established based on construction of 60 instead of 120 satellites. Analyses were conducted to determine satellite control, resources, manufacturing, and propellant requirements. The impact of the laser beam used for space-to-Earth power transmission upon the intervening atmosphere was examined as well as the inverse effect. The significant space environments and their effects on spacecraft components were investigated to define the design and operational limits imposed by the environments on an orbit transfer vehicle. The results show that LEO altitude 300 nmi and transfer orbit duration 6 months are preferrable.
