Overview of initial research into the effects of strong vortex flow on hybrid rocket combustion and performance

An examination of the effect of vortex flow on hybrid rocket combustion and performance is underway. Emphasis is on response of the fuel regression rate when subjected to vortex flow. Initial results show that there is a definite effect of the vortex on fuel regression rate. Future work will focus on quantitatively measuring this regression rate. This work is part of an overall program to develop an ultra low cost fuel system for hybrid rocket engines.

VII. Plasma Effects

Radio communication with space probes requires sending signals through the Earth's ionosphere and usually the solar wind. During planetary flybys, the signal may also pass through the ionosphere of another planet. These ionized media can perturb the radio signal in a variety of ways. Examples of these perturbations are variations in the electrical length between the spacecraft and the ground station, Faraday rotation of linearly polarized signals, amplitude and phase scintillations, and spectral and angular broadening. These plasma effects can have undesirable influences on telemetry performance and thus need to be understood from a communications engineering viewpoint. The plasma effects are, however, useful from a scientific viewpoint, since the effects on the communications link can often be inverted to estimate the physical conditions in the plasma.

Effects of Ground Boards on Acoustic Signals

Acoustic ground boards are used to provide hard reflective surfaces for microphones when taking outdoor measurements. These boards also have a wide variety of potential impacts on the signal received by the microphones. A comprehensive experimental campaign was completed in which various ground board and microphone configurations were tested to determine their effects on the acoustic signals returned by the microphones. Comparisons are made between these setups and a free-field reference case. Normal impedance testing on various combinations of sand, plywood, and ground board material was also completed.

The Effects of Lunar Dust on EVA Systems During the Apollo Missions

Mission documents from the six Apollo missions that landed on the lunar surface have been studied in order to catalog the effects of lunar dust on Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) systems, primarily the Apollo surface space suit. It was found that the effects could be sorted into nine categories: vision obscuration, false instrument readings, dust coating and contamination, loss of traction, clogging of mechanisms, abrasion, thermal control problems, seal failures, and inhalation and irritation. Although simple dust mitigation measures were sufficient to mitigate some of the problems (i.e., loss of traction) it was found that these measures were ineffective to mitigate many of the more serious problems (i.e., clogging, abrasion, diminished heat rejection). The severity of the dust problems were consistently underestimated by ground tests, indicating a need to develop better simulation facilities and procedures.

Dissociation and Recombination Effects on the Performance of Pulse Detonation Engines

This paper summarizes major theoretical results for pulse detonation engine performance taking into account real gas chemistry, as well as significant performance differences resulting from the presence of ram and compression heating. An unsteady CFD analysis, as well as a thermodynamic cycle analysis, was conducted in order to determine the actual and the ideal performance for an air-breathing pulse detonation engine (PDE) using either a hydrogen-air or ethylene-air mixture over a flight Mach number range from 0 to 4. The results clearly elucidate the competitive regime of PDE application relative to ramjets and gas turbines.

Effects of Motion Fidelity on Pilot Performance Using Mixed-Reality Visuals

This paper investigates the effects of simulator motion fidelity on pilot performance using mixed-reality visuals. In NASA’s Vertical Motion Simulator, eleven pilots flew a lift-plus-cruise electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle in a vertiport approach and landing task under four different motion conditions: no motion, small hexapod motion, large hexapod motion, and full motion. The simulator motion condition statistically significantly affected: 1) the severity of cybersickness, 2) motion ratings, 3) final approach and take-off boundary crossing groundspeeds, 4) longitudinal touchdown point, and 5) battery time remaining after landing. These results suggest that the use of motion systems in simulators with virtual- or mixed-reality visuals is warranted.

Microgravity Effects on Standardized Cognitive Performance Measures

The purpose of this experiment, selected to fly on the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) Spacelab mission, is to determine the effects of microgravity upon the cognitive skills which are critical to successful performance of many tasks on board the Space Shuttle. Six tests from the Unified Tri-service Cognitive Performance Assessment Battery (UTC-PAB) will be administered to the Mission Specialists to fulfill the goals of this experiment. These tests are based upon current theoretical models of human performance and the hypothesized effects of microgravity. The principle objective is the identification of the effects of microgravity upon specific information processing skills affecting performance from those of fatigue and shifts in work/rest cycles. Multiple measures of both short and long term fatigue will be obtained and used as a major independent variable for the analysis of these performance data. Scientific supporting studies will determine optimum practice and performance testing schedules for the astronauts. The same tests will be used post-flight to collect data on the recovery of any cognitive performance impairment compared with pre-flight, baseline levels.

Experimental Effects of Scaling on the Performance of Ion Rockets Employing Electron-Bombardment Ion Sources

A scaling program was undertaken to establish the relations between performance parameters and the size of the electron bombardment ion source. The experimental results of this investigation are the subject of this paper. Two geometrically similar sources, a 5- and a 20-cm-diameter beam source, were scaled from a 10-cm-diameter source to allow a performance comparison to be made. The three ion sources are compared for ion chamber characteristics and overall engine efficiency. The results of the chamber investigations are compared with scaling variations indicated by simple plasma theory. The effects of size on operating limits are also discussed. Mercury was used as the propellant in this investigation.

The Effects of Gravity on Combustion and Structure Formation During Combustion Synthesis in Gasless Systems

There have been relatively few publications examining the role of gravity during combustion synthesis (CS), mostly involving thermite systems. The main goal of this research was to study the influence of gravity on the combustion characteristics of heterogeneous gasless systems. In addition, some aspects of microstructure formation processes which occur during gasless CS were also studied. Four directions for experimental investigation have been explored: (1) the influence of gravity force on the characteristic features of heterogeneous combustion wave propagation (average velocity, instantaneous velocities, shape of combustion front); (2) the combustion of highly porous mixtures (with porosity greater than that for loose powders), which cannot be obtained in normal gravity; (3) the effect of gravity on sample expansion during combustion, in order to produce highly porous materials under microgravity conditions; and (4) the effect of gravity on the structure formation mechanism during the combustion synthesis of poreless composite materials.

Flight Service Environmental Effects on Composite Materials and Structures

NASA Langley and the U.S. Army have jointly sponsored programs to assess the effects of realistic flight environments and ground-based exposure on advanced composite materials and structures. Composite secondary structural components were initially installed on commercial transport aircraft in 1973; secondary and primary structural components were installed on commercial helicopters in 1979; and primary structural components were installed on commercial aircraft in the mid-to-late 1980's. Service performance, maintenance characteristics, and residual strength of numerous components are reported. In addition to data on flight components, 10 year ground exposure test results on material coupons are reported. Comparison between ground and flight environmental effects for several composite material systems are also presented. Test results indicate excellent in-service performance with the composite components during the 15 year period. Good correlation between ground-based material performance and operational structural performance has been achieved.

Qualification Progress and Mission-Enabling Capabilities of the 12-kW Hall-Effect, Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) Thruster

An update of the 12 kW Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) qualification and flight thruster status is provided. Three flight thrusters completed acceptance testing in 2025 and have been delivered to NASA. Environmental qualification is complete and preparations are under way for long-duration life-demonstration testing. Programmatic lessons learned associated with risk management, contract oversight, and requirement definition during the fabrication and assembly are discussed. In addition, the extensibility of the AEPS thruster to enable a variety of NASA missions is presented.

Erosion, Corrosion and Foreign Object Damage Effects in Gas Turbines [Les consequences de l'endommagement des turbines I gaz par erosion, corrosion et objets étrangers]

The Conference Proceedings contains 31 papers presented at the Propulsion and Energetics Panel Symposium on Erosion, Corrosion and Foreign Object Damage Effects in Gas Turbines which was held from 25-28th April 1994, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Technical Evaluation Report and the Keynote Address are included at the beginning and discussions follow most papers. The Symposium was arranged in the following Sessions: Operational Experience and Requirements (7); Deposition and Erosion (7); Foreign Object Damage (5); Coatings, Repairs and Materials Aspects - 1 (4); Coatings, Repairs and Materials Aspects - 2 (7); and Testing and Certification Procedures (1).

The Entry Plasma Sheath and Its Effects on Space Vehicle Electromagnetic Systems, Volume 1

This symposium is the fourth in a series on the plasma sheath. The first three were held in Boston, Massachusetts, and were sponsored by the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. The papers included in the symposium cover theoretical and experimental results of research and flight tests of many different specific aspects of the general problem of plasma sheath degradation of reentry vehicle electromagnetic systems. Only the newer advances and more recent developments in the field are included in the Fourth Plasma Sheath Symposium, with no particular attempt being made to review the general background and history of the problem or to cover those aspects discussed in the previous symposia. Flight data from both NASA and DOD programs are included.

Ground Slope Effects on Lander Radiator Performance

Two sensitivity studies were performed to examine the drop in radiator heat rejection from slopes. Study #1 used a 5.5m tall reduced order asset to represent a small-lander/rover. Study #2 used a 20m asset represent a tall lander. The assets had body mounted horizontal, 45º inward-tilted, and vertical radiator orientations. The impact of slopes on different radiator orientations and on radiators pointing different directions (i.e., slope verses sun) was investigated. The studies were conducted at a polar location of -82.5ºS to capture the incident solar flux at the northmost, and therefore the hottest, range of potential Artemis landing sites (Mons Mouton Plateau).
