5G Securely Energized and Resilient: (5G-SER) (Final Report)

NREL's work on 5G integration with physical power systems (versus simulated systems demonstrated in task 3) under 5G-Securely Energized and Resilient (5G-SER) achieved a major milestone in with the completion of Task 4 activities. After many months (6+) of planning and development along with scaling challenges along the way, a full 5G end-to-end network with physical hardware components (physical inverter, physical power panel, physical battery, etc.) was deployed in a containerized environment. In parallel, a distributed controls architecture for a microgrid powering 5G resources was also successfully modified from its previous instantiation for a simulated environment to work with these physical components. These accomplishments set the stage to use newly setup 5G technology with physical microgrid components to test the feasibility of 5G wireless with physical systems to enable resilient communications between controls and distributed solar and storage resources while exploring ways to configure 5G components to survive power disturbances. The results detailed in the report below show that even utilizing physical components, 5G wireless systems were able to provide resilient results that were similar to the results from the simulated environment Task 3).

Effectiveness and Long-Term Effects of SER+ FELIZ(mente): A School-Based Mindfulness Program for Portuguese Elementary Students

School-based mindfulness programs (SBMPs) have gained global popularity. Yet, there is a need for more rigorous procedures to develop and assess them. This study aimed to address these limitations by examining the effectiveness of a Portuguese SBMP, called SER + FELIZ(mente). The final sample included 190 third and fourth-graders: 99 in the SBMP group and 91 in a wait-list group. Effects on attentional control, emotional regulation and wellbeing were examined in the short term (T2) and 6 months later (T3). We also tested the moderating role of age, gender, and baseline scores. Using a multilevel modeling approach, results showed a clear benefit of SBMP on emotional wellbeing at T2 but not T3. Despite SBMP students surpassing wait-list students in attentional control, cognitive reappraisal, and social wellbeing at T2, these effects were due to a levelling off among SBMP students, coupled with a decline among wait-list students from T1 to T2. These effects were moderated by age at T3. While universal improvements were limited, our SBMP seemed to have acted as a shield against school stressors (i.e., likely, test anxiety at T2). This opens a new avenue for research concerning the role of SBMPs in preventing (rather than repairing) mental-health issues in elementary students.

Electro–Oxidation of Nitroxide Radicals: Adsorption–Mediated Charge Transfer Probed Using SERS and Potentiometry

Organic compounds containing nitroxide radicals such as 4–hydroxy–2,2,6,6–tetramethylpiperidine–1–oxyl (4–hydroxy–TEMPO) are redox–active and are of interest for potential applications in redox flow batteries. The mechanisms governing charge–transfer reactions of such compounds are not well understood. Specifically, the anodic charge transfer coefficient (αa) corresponding to the electro–oxidation of 4–hydroxy–TEMPO in an aqueous medium is ~0.9, i.e., αa deviates considerably from the expected value (0.5) for a symmetric single–step one–electron transfer redox reaction. In a previous publication (J. Electrochem. Soc., 2020, 167, 143505), we have proposed a reaction mechanism to explain such asymmetric behavior by invoking adsorption–desorption processes. In the proposed mechanism, reversible oxidation of 4–hydroxy–TEMPO leads to the adsorption of the oxidation product, which then undergoes slow rate–limiting desorption from the electrode surface. In the present contribution, supporting evidence is provided for this mechanism. In situ surface–enhanced Raman spectroscopy combined with density functional theory simulations are employed to confirm the presence of surface–adsorbed species at a Au electrode during electro–oxidation of 4–hydroxy–TEMPO. Furthermore, we employ chronopotentiometry to track the gradual re–equilibration of the electrode–electrolyte interface following the electro–oxidation of 4–hydroxy–TEMPO. Analysis of the chronopotentiometry data further suggests the presence of adsorbed species, which were previously proposed and are now confirmed by direct spectroscopic evidence.

SERS-based ssDNA composition analysis with inhomogeneous peak broadening and reservoir computing

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy employed in conjunction with post-processing machine learning methods is a promising technique for effective data analysis, allowing one to enhance the molecular and chemical composition analysis of information rich DNA molecules. In this work, we report on a room temperature inhomogeneous broadening as a function of the increased adenine concentration and employ this feature to develop one-dimensional and two dimensional chemical composition classification models of 200 long single stranded DNA sequences. Afterwards, we develop a reservoir computing chemical composition classification scheme of the same molecules and demonstrate enhanced performance that does not rely on manual feature identification.

Identification of Serine-Containing Microcystins by UHPLC-MS/MS Using Thiol and Sulfoxide Derivatizations and Detection of Novel Neutral Losses

Microcystins (MCs) are hepatotoxic cyclic heptapeptides produced by cyanobacteria, and their structural diversity has led to the discovery of more than 300 congeners to date. However, with known amino acid combinations, many more MC congeners are theoretically possible, suggesting many remain unidentified. Herein, two novel serine (Ser)-containing MCs were putatively identified in a Lake Erie cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB), using high-resolution UHPLC-MS as well as thiol and sulfoxide derivatization procedures. These MCs contain an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl on methyl dehydroalanine (Mdha) residue that undergoes Michael addition to produce a thiol-derivatized MC. Derivatization reactions using various thiolation reagents were followed by MS/MS, and two Python codes were used for data analysis and structural elucidation of MCs. Two novel MCs containing Ser at position 1 (i.e., next to Mdha) were putatively identified as [Ser 1 ]MC-RR and [Ser 1 ]MC-YR. Using thiol- and sulfoxide-modified [Ser 1 ]MCs, identifications were confirmed by the observation of specific neutral losses of the oxidized thiols or sulfoxides in CID-MS/MS spectra in both positive and negative electrospray ionization (ESI) modes. These novel neutral losses are unique for MCs with Mdha and an adjacent Ser residue. In conclusion, data suggest that a gas-phase reaction occurs between oxygen from adjacent Ser residue and sulfur of the Mdha-bonded thiol or sulfoxide, which leads to the formation and detection of stable cyclic MC ions in MS/MS spectra at m/z values corresponding to the loss of oxidized thiols or oxidized sulfoxides from Ser 1 -containing MCs.

Beyond the Charge Transfer Mechanism for 2D Materials-Assisted Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively implemented as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, enabling trace-molecule detection for broad applications. However, the accurate understanding of the mechanism remains elusive because most theoretical explanations are still phenomenological or qualitative based on simplified models and rough assumptions. To advance the development of 2D material-assisted SERS, it is vital to attain a comprehensive understanding of the enhancement mechanism and a quantitative assessment of the enhancement performance. Here, the microscopic chemical mechanism of 2D material-assisted SERS is quantitatively investigated. The frequency-dependent Raman scattering cross sections suggest that the 2D materials’ SERS performance is strongly dependent on the excitation wavelengths and the molecule types. By analysis of the microscopic Raman scattering processes, the comprehensive contributions of SERS can be revealed. Beyond the widely postulated charge transfer mechanisms, the quantitative results conclusively demonstrate that the resonant transitions within 2D materials alone are also capable of enhancing the molecular Raman scattering through the diffusive scattering of phonons. Furthermore, all of these scattering routines will interfere with each other and determine the final SERS performance. Our results not only provide a complete picture of the SERS mechanisms but also demonstrate a systematic and quantitative approach to theoretically understand, predict, and promote the 2D materials SERS toward analytical applications.
