Quantum ghost imaging microscopy depth-of-field study

Quantum ghost imaging approaches have been proposed to enhance biological microscopy, for example, using 2D visible detectors to provide IR images or providing additional dimensions of spatial or spectral information. Toward the goal of making such imaging schemes practical, we compare image quality and depth-of-field between traditional images and ghost images at the same excitation levels. We measure how image quality and depth-of-field depend on the parameters of the entangled light produced using type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). We use a pair of time-synchronized, photon-timing single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array detectors to capture two distinct microscope imaging paths simultaneously on a photon-pair-by-photon-pair basis: one in a traditional imaging pathway and the other a quantum ghost imaging pathway. We calculate the depth-of-field, resolution, contrast, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) through the parameter space of a β-Barium Borate (BBO) type-I bulk non-linear crystal length and angle. Our results provide a basis for choosing parameters for quantum ghost imaging with type-I SPDC sources.

Undulator radiation of single electrons: coherence length and quantum-optical properties

The aims of the CLARA experiment at the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) were to directly measure the coherence length of undulator radiation emitted by a single electron and to test whether the radiation is in a pure classical Glauber coherent state or in a quantum mixture of coherent and Fock states. We used a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to study visible radiation generated by 150-MeV electrons circulating in the ring. The relative delay between the two arms of the MZI was adjusted by varying the length of one of them with a resolution of 10 nm. The intensity of the circulating beam spanned several orders of magnitude, down to single electrons. A pair of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) was placed at the output of the MZI arms to detect photocounts with high efficiency and timing resolution. We describe the observed interference patterns and photocount rates as a function of interferometer delay and discuss their implications.

A review of quantum imaging methods and enabling technologies

The field of quantum imaging has recently seen an explosion of new methods and techniques. At the heart of most quantum imaging approaches are three enabling technologies: the source of the quantum light, the detectors that turn sensing into imaging, and the method by which the quantum nature of light is leveraged to improve the desired measurement. This review addresses the dominant and emerging technologies in each of these components as well as details concerning the implementations of various quantum imaging methods.

An overview of continuous and discrete phasor analysis of binned or time-gated periodic decays

Time-resolved analysis of periodically excited luminescence decays by the phasor method in the presence of time gating or binning is revisited. Analytical expressions for discrete configurations of square gates are derived and the locus of the phasors of such modified periodic single-exponential decays is compared to the canonical universal semicircle. The effects of IRF offset, decay truncation and gate shape are also discussed. Finally, modified expressions for the phase and modulus lifetimes are provided for some simple cases. A discussion of a modified phasor calibration approach is presented.

Measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes precision measurements of the transverse momentum $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$ ($\ell =e,\mu $) and of the angular variable $\phi ^{*}_{\eta }$ distributions of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in a mass range of 66–116 GeV. The analysis uses data from 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,$TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are performed in the same fiducial volumes, corrected for detector effects, and combined. Compared to previous measurements in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,$TeV, these new measurements probe perturbative QCD at a higher centre-of-mass energy with a different composition of initial states. They reach a precision of 0.2$\%$ for the normalized spectra at low values of $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$. The data are compared with different QCD predictions, where it is found that predictions based on resummation approaches can describe the full spectrum within uncertainties.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕ s in B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decays in ATLAS at 13 TeV

A measurement of the B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decay parameters using 80.5 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 Te proton–proton collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase ϕ s , the width difference Δ Γ s between the B$_s^0$ meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Γ s . The values measured for the physical parameters are combined with those from 19.2fb -1 of 7 and 8 Te data, leading to the following: ϕs=-0.087±0.036(stat.)±0.021(syst.)rad ΔΓ s =0.0657±0.0043(stat.)±0.0037(syst.)ps -1 Γ s =0.6703±0.0014(stat.)±0.0018(syst.)ps -1 Results for ϕ s and Δ Γ s are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the ϕ s –Δ Γ s plane. Furthermore the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are measured. ϕ s and Δ Γ s measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.
