Technological Developments of NexGen Micro-Shutter Array (NGMSA) for the Future Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) Flagship Mission

We present the most up to date advancements in production, design, and performance of the NexGen Micro-Shutter Array (NGMSA) for Multi-object Spectroscopy (MOS), intended for the future Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) Flagship. A microshutter array functions as a programmable slit mask, to generate slits corresponding to sparsely distributed sources in the field of view of a telescope. In contrast to the magnetic/electrostatic microshutter arrays used in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the NGMSA is fully operated by electrostatics, simplifying overall system. Our small pilot array proved its capability from FORTIS sounding rocket mission in 2019. As we are switching to a larger HWO flight size array process, we encounter multiple processing related issues. Also, there has been individual shutter level issue that impairs operation and performance. We will discuss those problems and strategies to overcome the challenges to achieve an on/off contrast of >1e5 with near 100% shutter operability.

Camera shutter is actuated by electric signal

Rotary solenoid energized by an electric signal opens a camera shutter, and when the solenoid is de-energized a spring closes it. By the use of a microswitch, the shutter may be opened and closed in one continuous, rapid operation when the solenoid is actuated.

Use of color-coded sleeve shutters accelerates oscillograph channel selection

Sleeve-type shutters mechanically adjust individual galvanometer light beams onto or away from selected channels on oscillograph papers. In complex test setups, the sleeve-type shutters are color coded to separately identify each oscillograph channel. This technique could be used on any equipment using tubular galvanometer light sources.

Shutter mechanism for spacecraft spectrophotometer

A shutter mechanism is described for the backscatter ultraviolet spectrophotometer experiment on the Nimbus D satellite. The purpose of the experiment is to determine spatial distribution of atmospheric ozone from measurements of ultraviolet radiation backscattered by the earth's atmosphere. The system consists of two independent, rotary cylinder shutters, controlled by a dual star Geneva mechanism, and driven by a single stepper motor. A single driver controls a combination of two independently driven Geneva stars. Design considerations involved the use of low friction, nonmetallic materials.

Rotary solenoid shutter drive assembly and rotary inertia damper and stop plate assembly

A camera shutter assembly composed of a pair of superposed opaque planar shutter blades, each having an aperture and being arranged for reciprocal linear movement is disclosed. A pair of rotary solenoids, each connected to one of the blades by a linkage and arranged to be actuated separately at a predetermined interval is provided. An inertia damper and stop plate is built into each solenoid to prevent rebound.

Shutters and slats for the integral sunshade of an optical reception antenna

Optical reception antennas used at a small Sun-Earth-probe angle (small solar elongation E) require sunshading to prevent intolerable scattering of light from the surface of the primary mirror. An integral sunshade consisting of hexagonal tubes aligned with the segmentation of a large mirror was proposed for use down to E = 12 degrees. For smaller angles, asterisk-shaped vanes inserted into the length of the hexagonal tubes would allow operation down to about 6 degrees with a fixed obscuration of 3.6 percent. Two alternative methods are investigated to extend the usefulness of the integral sunshade to smaller angles by adding either variable-area shutters to block the tube corners that admit off-axis sunlight or by inserting slats (partial vanes) down the full length of some tubes. Slats are effective for most operations down to 6 degrees, and obscure only 1.2 percent. For E between 10.75 and 12 degrees, shutters cause even less obscuration.

A Low Power Cryogenic Shutter Mechanism for Use in Infrared Imagers

This paper discusses the requirements, design, operation, and testing of the shutter mechanism for the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). The shutter moves a mirror panel into or out of the incoming light path transitioning IRAC between data acquisition and calibration modes. The mechanism features a torsion flexure suspension system, two low-power rotary actuators, a balanced shaft, and a variable reluctance position sensor. Each of these items is discussed along with problems encountered during development and the implemented solutions.

Structural Analysis of a Magnetically Actuated Silicon Nitride Micro-Shutter for Space Applications

Finite element models have been created to simulate the electrostatic and electromagnetic actuation of a 0.5 micrometers silicon nitride micro-shutter for use in a spacebased Multi-object Spectrometer (MOS). The microshutter uses a torsion hinge to go from the closed, 0 degree, position, to the open, 90 degree position. Stresses in the torsion hinge are determined with a large deformation nonlinear finite element model. The simulation results are compared to experimental measurements of fabricated micro-shutter devices.

The Design of a Remotely Operated Shutter (ROS) for Thermal Vacuum Testing

Space-flight hardware is required to meet specific outgassing criteria under vacuum conditions in order to reduce the risk of contaminating sensitive optics and spacecraft components. Under certain circumstances, it is desirable to measure the contamination levels that are being released from all surfaces of the test payload. This certification is often accomplished with a Total Outgassing Measurement (TOM) box. The TOM box has one 103.2 square centimeter (16 square inch) opening and one 4.84 square centimeter (0.75 square inches) opening. The larger opening allows contaminants to easily escape the box during the hardware bakeout phase. The smaller opening provides a limited conductance path for outgassed contaminants during the certification phase. A Thermoelectric Quartz Crystal Microbalance (TQCM) monitors the contamination levels inside the box to provide the total outgassing measurement. During transition from the bakeout phase to the certification phase, the TOM box is reconfigured to close the larger opening. For previous certifications, the vacuum chamber was returned to ambient conditions and the larger conductance port was closed manually. The ROS system eliminates the need to enter the chamber by remotely closing the large TOM box opening. Substantial schedule and cost savings are achieved through the use of this system. The ROS system consists of three main components; a shutter, a motion actuator, and an actuator controller. Each of these components was selected or designed to operate in an extreme-temperature and vacuum environment while providing a high level of reliability. Different types of motion actuators were considered for driving the shutter. Design parameters for the actuator included material properties, force capability, reliability, and cost.

Light shift measurements in a Cesium Fountain without the use of mechanical shutters

We present measurements confirming operation of a cesium fountain frequency standard with light shift below 10^-15 (and with evidence suggesting it is several orders of magnitude below this level) but without the use of mechanical shutters. Suppression of the light shift is realized using a master-slave laser configuration by reducing the overall optical power delivered to the physics package as well as spoiling the injection of the slave, causing it to lase far off resonance (1-2 nm) as proposed by the authors several years ago [l]. In the absence of any mitigation, this (AC Stark) shift, due to near-resonant laser light reaching the atoms during their microwave interrogation period, is the largest shift in such frequency standards (2x10^-11 for Our fountain). Mechanical shutters provided adequate light attenuation but have been prone to failure.

Active pixel sensor array with electronic shuttering

An active pixel cell includes electronic shuttering capability. The cell can be shuttered to prevent additional charge accumulation. One mode transfers the current charge to a storage node that is blocked against accumulation of optical radiation. The charge is sampled from a floating node. Since the charge is stored, the node can be sampled at the beginning and the end of every cycle. Another aspect allows charge to spill out of the well whenever the charge amount gets higher than some amount, thereby providing anti blooming.
