Inclusive prompt photon-jet correlations as a probe of gluon saturation in electron-nucleus scattering at small x

We compute the differential cross-section for inclusive prompt photon+quark production in deeply inelastic scattering of electrons off nuclei at small x (e + A DIS) in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. The result is expressed as a convolution of the leading order (in the strong coupling α s ) impact factor for the process and universal dipole matrix elements, in the limit of hard photon transverse momentum relative to the nuclear saturation scale Q s,A (x). We perform a numerical study of this process for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), exploring in particular the azimuthal angle correlations between the final state photon and quark. We observe a systematic suppression and broadening pattern of the back-to-back peak in the relative azimuthal angle distribution, as the saturation scale is increased by replacing proton targets with gold nuclei. Our results suggest that photon+jet final states in inclusive e + A DIS at high energies are in general a promising channel for exploring gluon saturation that is complementary to inclusive and diffractive dijet production. They also provide a sensitive empirical test of the universality of dipole matrix elements when compared to identical measurements in proton-nucleus collisions. However because photon+jet correlations at small x in EIC kinematics require jet reconstruction at small k ⊥ , it will be important to study their feasibility relative to photon-hadron correlations.

Structure functions from renormalization group improved small x evolution

Abstract We perform the fit to the structure function $$F_2$$ F 2 data from HERA including terms due to the resummation at small x . The equation for the unintegrated gluon density is solved, previously established within the renormalization group improved small x framework. We find very good description of the structure function $$F_2$$ F 2 and its charm component $$F_2^c$$ F 2 c . The resulting unintegrated gluon density is found to be consistent with the calculations based on similar approaches available in the literature, with only slightly higher intercept value.

Sudakov double logs in single-inclusive hadron production in DIS at small x from the color glass condensate formalism

We investigate the high Q 2 (photon virtuality) limit of single-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small x , using the color glass condensate formalism at next-to-leading order. We focus on the Λ QCD 2 ≪ p h 2 ≪ Q 2 kinematic regime, where p h is the produced hadron transverse momentum, and extract the Sudakov double logarithms. We further argue that compatibility between the color glass condensate calculation and transverse momentum dependent distribution factorization at one-loop order can only be achieved if the small-x evolution is kinematically constrained. Elastic dijet production in electron scattering on a longitudinally polarized proton at small x : A portal to orbital angular momentum distributions

We calculate the elastic production of dijets from electron collisions with a longitudinally polarized proton target at small values of the Bjorken x variable. Building on the pioneering proposals of Hatta [Gluon orbital angular momentum at small- x , .] and Bhattacharya [Signature of the gluon orbital angular momentum, ., Probing the quark orbital angular momentum at electron-ion colliders using exclusive π 0 production, ., and Exploring orbital angular momentum and spin-orbit correlation for gluons at the Electron-Ion Collider, .] for measuring the quark and gluon orbital angular momentum (OAM) distributions, our focus is on both the longitudinal double spin asymmetry (DSA) and longitudinal single spin asymmetry (SSA). We compute the numerators of these asymmetries in the small- x formalism of the light-cone operator treatment. Utilizing the small- x expressions for the OAM distributions derived earlier in Kovchegov and Manley [Orbital angular momentum at small x revisited, .], we demonstrate that the DSA provides a robust probe for both the quark and gluon OAM distributions within the proton. In contrast, we find that while the SSA is also sensitive to the OAM distributions, extraction of the latter from the SSA would require new developments in small- x theory and phenomenology, and is probably not feasible at this point in time. These findings highlight the potential of DSA measurements in elastic dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider to provide the first-ever direct access to the quark and gluon OAM distributions at small x , paving the way for new insights into the proton spin puzzle. Coherent energy loss effects in dihadron azimuthal angular correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering at small x

We perform an exploratory study of the role of coherent, medium-induced energy loss in azimuthal angular correlations in dihadron production in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at small x where the target proton/nucleus is modeled as a Color Glass Condensate. In this approach coherent radiative energy loss is part of the higher order corrections to the leading order dihadron production cross section. We include the effects of both gluon saturation and coherent radiative energy loss and show that radiative cold-matter energy loss has a significant effect on the so-called coincidence probability for the back-to-back production of dihadrons in DIS. In conclusion, we also define a double ratio of coincidence probabilities for a nucleus and proton targets and show that it is very robust against higher order radiative corrections.

Back-to-back inclusive dijets in DIS at small x: gluon Weizsäcker-Williams distribution at NLO

In [1], we performed the first complete computation of the back-to-back inclusive dijet cross-section in Deeply Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at small x Bj to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory (CGC EFT). We demonstrate here that for dijets with relative transverse momentum P ⊥ and transverse momentum imbalance q ⊥ , to leading power in q ⊥ /P ⊥ , the cross-section for longitudinally polarized photons can be fully factorized into the product of a perturbative impact factor and the non-perturbative Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distribution to NLO accuracy. The impact factor can further be expressed as the product of a universal soft factor which resums Sudakov double and single logs in P ⊥ /q ⊥ and a coefficient function given by a remarkably compact analytic expression. We show that in the CGC EFT the WW TMD satisfies a kinematically constrained JIMWLK renormalization group evolution in rapidity. This factorization formula is valid to all orders in Q s /q ⊥ for q ⊥ , Q s << P ⊥ , where Q s is the semi-hard saturation scale that grows with rapidity.

Gluon splitting at small x: a unified derivation for the JIMWLK, DGLAP and CSS equations

We revisit the calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to dijet production in electron-ion collisions at small x. We focus on the back-to-back configuration where the relative transverse momentum P ⊥ of the measured jets is much larger than both their momentum imbalance K ⊥ and the target saturation momentum Q s (x, A). In this regime, we present for the first time a complete calculation of the real NLO corrections, associated with gluon emissions outside the jet cones, at leading power in 1/P ⊥ . Our result exhibits TMD factorisation, with the same hard factor as at tree-level and a NLO correction to the Weiszäcker-Williams (WW) gluon transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution which involves four Wilson-line operators. By studying different kinematical regimes for K ⊥ and for the radiated gluon, we recover all the quantum evolutions that were previously identified for this process at NLO: the B-JIMWLK high-energy evolution and the CSS evolution of the gluon WW TMD, and the DGLAP evolution of the gluon PDF. When both K ⊥ and the transverse momentum transferred by the target are large compared to Q s , all the Wilson-line operators boil down to the unintegrated gluon distribution and our NLO result for the gluon TMD can be used to isolate the transverse-momentum dependent gluon splitting function.

SIDIS at small x at next-to-leading order: Gluon contribution

We calculate the contribution of gluons to single inclusive hadron production at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small x using the color glass condensate formalism. It is shown that the only divergence present is the standard collinear divergence, which is absorbed into scale evolution of quark-hadron fragmentation function. Our calculations are performed at finite N c and we provide general finite N c expressions for the structure of Wilson lines appearing in inclusive dihadron and single hadron production cross sections. We also comment on how one can obtain rapidity distribution of hadron multiplicities from our results. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Back-to-Back Inclusive Dijets in Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x : Complete NLO Results and Predictions

We compute the back-to-back dijet cross section in deep inelastic scattering at small x to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the color glass condensate effective field theory. Our result can be factorized into a convolution of the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function (WW gluon TMD) with a universal soft factor and an NLO coefficient function. The soft factor includes both double and single logarithms in the ratio of the relative transverse momentum P ⊥ of the dijet pair to the dijet momentum imbalance q ⊥ ; its renormalization group (RG) evolution is resummed into the Sudakov factor. Likewise, the WW TMD obeys a nonlinear RG equation in x that is kinematically constrained to satisfy both the lifetime and rapidity ordering of the projectile. Exact analytical expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient function of transversely and longitudinally polarized photons. Our results allow for the first quantitative separation of the dynamics of Sudakov suppression from that of gluon saturation. They can be extended to other final states and provide a framework for precision tests of novel QCD many-body dynamics at the Electron-Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quark Sivers Function at Small-$x$: Leading contribution from the Spin-Dependent Odderon

We present the calculation of the leading contribution to the quark Sivers function at small-Bjorken x as in [1]. This calculation uses the high energy scattering approximation and operator formalism developed in [2,3] to obtain a dominant contribution to the quark Sivers function coming from the spin-dependent odderon, in agreement with the results of [4]. We then calculate this dominant contribution in the diquark model of the proton to obtain a small-x estimate for the Sivers function.

Finite-size effects on small- x evolution and saturation in proton and nuclear targets

Within the color glass condensate effective field theory, we assess the importance of including a finite size for the target on observables sensitive to small- x evolution. To this end, we study the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation with impact-parameter dependence in the initial condition. We demonstrate that neglecting the dependence on the impact parameter can result in overestimated saturation effects for protons, while it has little effect for heavy nuclei at the energies available at current experiments. When fixing the nonperturbative parameters to the energy dependence of the exclusive J / ψ photoproduction cross section with proton targets, predictions for lead targets are not sensitive to the applied running-coupling prescription, the scheme chosen to resum large transverse logarithms in the BK equation, or the infrared regulator in the evolution. Helicity evolution at small x : quark to gluon and gluon to quark transition operators

We include the quark to gluon and gluon to quark shock-wave transition operators into the small Bjorken-x evolution equations for helicity in the flavor-singlet channel derived earlier in [1,2,3]. While such transitions do not affect the large-N c version of the evolution equations for helicity, the large-N c & N f equations are affected. (N c and N f are the numbers of quark colors and flavors, respectively.) We derive the corresponding corrected large-N c & N f equations for the polarized dipole amplitudes contributing to the flavor-singlet quark and gluon helicity distributions in the double-logarithmic approximation (DLA), resumming powers of α s ln 2 (1/x) with αs the strong coupling constant. We solve these equations iteratively and extract the polarized splitting functions up to four loops. We show that our splitting functions agree with the fixed-order perturbative calculations up to and including the existing three-loops results [4,5,6,7]. Similar to the large-Nc helicity evolution in the shock-wave approach [8], our large-N c & N f small-x splitting functions agree with those obtained in the infrared evolution equations framework from [9, 10] up to three loops, but appear to slightly disagree at four loops.

Small-x structure of oxygen and neon isotopes as seen by the Large Hadron Collider

Results on collisions of O-16 nuclei performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have been presented for the first time at Quark Matter 2023 by the STAR collaboration. O-16+O-16 collisions are also expected to take place in the near future at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at much higher beam energies. We explore the potential of beam-energy-dependent studies for this system to probe small-x dynamics and QCD evolution. We perform 3+1D IP-Glasma simulations to predict the rapidity dependence of the initial geometry of light-ion collisions, focusing on O-16+O-16 and Ne-20+Ne-20 collisions at root s(NN) = 70 GeV and 7 TeV. The choice of Ne-20 is motivated by its strongly elongated geometry, which may respond differently to the effect of the high-energy evolution compared to the more spherical O-16. We find that smearing induced by soft gluon production at high energy causes mild variations in the initial-state eccentricities as a function of the collision energy. These effects could be resolved in future experiments and deserve further investigation.

Unveiling the sea: universality of the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions at small x

Within the Colour Glass Condensate effective theory, we demonstrate that back-to-back dijet correlations in dilute-dense collisions involving a small-quark from the nuclear target can be factorised in terms of universal transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) for the sea quarks. Two building blocks are needed to construct all these TMDs at the operator level: the sea quark TMD operator which appears in semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) or in the Drell-Yan process and the elastic-matrix for a quark-antiquark dipole. Compared to SIDIS, the saturation effects are stronger for dijet production in forward proton-nucleus collisions, due to additional scattering in the initial and final state, effectively resulting in a larger value for the nuclear saturation momentum.

Unified description of DGLAP, CSS, and BFKL evolution: TMD factorization bridging large and small x

This paper introduces a transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization scheme designed to unify both large and small Bjorken-x regimes. We compute the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics (QCD) corrections to the gluon TMD operator for an unpolarized hadron within this proposed scheme. This leads to the emergence of a new TMD evolution, incorporating those in transverse momentum, rapidity, and Bjorken-x. When matched to the collinear factorization scheme, our factorization scheme faithfully reproduces the well-established Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi and Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) evolutions. Conversely, matching with high-energy factorization not only yields the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov evolution but also reveals distinctive signatures of CSS logarithms. The development of this novel TMD factorization scheme, capable of seamlessly reconciling disparate Bjorken-x regimes and faithfully reproducing established QCD evolution equations, has the potential to significantly advance our comprehension of high-energy processes and three-dimensional parton structures of hadrons. ν-point energy correletors with F AST EEC: Small-x physics from LHC jets

In recent years, energy correlators have emerged as a powerful tool for studying jet substructure, with promising applications such as probing the hadronization transition, analyzing the quark-gluon plasma, and improving the precision of top quark mass measurements. The projected N-point correlator measures correlations between N final-state particles by tracking the largest separation between them, showing a scaling behavior related to DGLAP splitting functions. These correlators can be analytically continued in N, commonly referred to as ν-correlators, allowing access to non-integer moments of the splitting functions. Of particular interest is the ν → 0 limit, where the small momentum fraction behavior of the splitting functions requires resummation. Originally, the computational complexity of evaluating ν-correlators for M particles scaled as 2 2M , making it impractical for real-world analyses. However, by using recursion, we reduce this to M 2M , and through the FastEEC method of dynamically resolving subjets, M is replaced by the number of subjets. This breakthrough enables, for the first time, the computation of ν-correlators for LHC data. In practice, limiting the number of subjets to 16 is sufficient to achieve percent-level precision, which we validate using known integer-ν results and convergence tests for non-integer ν. We have implemented this in an update to FastEEC and conducted an initial study of power-law scaling in the perturbative regime as a function of ν, using CMS Open Data on jets. The results agree with DGLAP evolution, except at small ν, where the anomalous dimension saturates to a value that matches the BFKL anomalous dimension.
