Evolution of the ATLAS TDAQ online software framework towards Phase-II upgrade: Use of Kubernetes as an orchestrator of the ATLAS Event Filter computing farm

The ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN continuously evolves its TDAQ system to meet the challenges of new physics goals and technological advancements. As ATLAS prepares for the Phase-II Run 4 of the LHC, significant enhancements in the TDAQ Controls and Configuration (TDAQ-CC) tools have been designed to ensure efficient data collection, processing, and management. This abstract presents the evolution of ATLAS TDAQ-CC system leading up to Phase-II Run 4. As part of the evolution towards Phase-II, Kubernetes has been chosen to orchestrate the Event Filter (EF) farm. By leveraging Kubernetes, ATLAS can dynamically allocate computing resources, scale processing capacity in response to changing data taking conditions and ensure high availability of data processing services. The integration of the Kubernetes with the TDAQ Run Control framework enables perfect synchronisation between the experiment’s data acquisition components and the computing infrastructure. We will discuss the architectural considerations and implementation challenges involved in Kubernetes integration with the ATLAS TDAQ-CC system. We will highlight the benefits of using Kubernetes as an EF farm orchestrator, including improved resource utilization, enhanced fault tolerance, and simplified deployment and management of data processing workflows. In addition, we will report on the extensive testing of Kubernetes that was conducted using a farm of 2500 servers within the experiment data taking environment, demonstrating its scalability and robustness in handling the demands of the ATLAS TDAQ system for Phase-II. The adoption of Kubernetes represents a significant step forward in the evolution of ATLAS TDAQ-CC system, aligning with industry best practices in container orchestration.

Bringing heterogeneity to the CMS software framework [Slides]

Co-processors or accelerators like GPUs and FPGAs are becoming more and more popular. CMS' data processing framework (CMSSW) implements multi-threading using Intel TBB utilizing tasks as concurrent units of work. We have developed generic mechanisms within the CMSSW framework to interact effectively with non-CPU resources and configure CPU and non-CPU algorithms in a unified way. As a first step to gain experience, we have explored mechanisms for how algorithms could offload work to NVIDIA GPUs with CUDA.

GstLAL: A software framework for gravitational wave discovery

The GstLAL library, derived from Gstreamer and the LIGO Algorithm Library, supports a stream-based approach to gravitational-wave data processing. Although GstLAL was primarily designed to search for gravitational-wave signatures of merging black holes and neutron stars, it has also contributed to other gravitational-wave searches, data calibration, and detector-characterization efforts. GstLAL has played an integral role in all of the LIGO-Virgo collaboration detections, and its low-latency configuration has enabled rapid electromagnetic follow-up for dozens of compact binary candidates.

A Software Rejuvenation Framework for Distributed Computing

A performability-oriented conceptual framework for software rejuvenation has been constructed as a means of increasing levels of reliability and performance in distributed stateful computing. As used here, performability-oriented signifies that the construction of the framework is guided by the concept of analyzing the ability of a given computing system to deliver services with gracefully degradable performance. The framework is especially intended to support applications that involve stateful replicas of server computers.

F Prime: An Open-Source Framework for Small-Scale Flight Software Systems

Developing flight software for small-scale missions such as CubeSats and SmallSats is challenging. These missions typically have ambitious goals, modest budgets, and tight schedules. To meet these challenges, a good flight software framework is essential. Frameworks can provide an architecture, infrastructure, tools, and reusable software components, all of which can help developers deliver their code on time and on budget. In this paper we present F Prime, a free, open-source flight software framework developed at JPL and tailored to small-scale systems such as CubeSats, SmallSats, and instruments. F Prime comprises several elements: (1) an architecture that decomposes flight software into discrete components with well-defined interfaces; (2) a C++ framework that provides core capabilities such as message queues and threads; (3) tools for specifying components and connections and automatically generating code; (4) a growing collection of ready-to-use components; and (5) tools for testing flight software at the unit and integration levels. We describe the F Prime framework and tools and present our experience using them. We describe several enhancements to the framework currently underway in the areas of software design, software verification, and ground data systems for testing.

Distributed Computing Framework for Synthetic Radar Application

We are developing an extensible software framework, in response to Air Force and NASA needs for distributed computing facilities for a variety of radar applications. The objective of this work is to develop a Python based software framework, that is the framework elements of the middleware that allows developers to control processing flow on a grid in a distributed computing environment. Framework architectures to date allow developers to connect processing functions together as interchangeable objects, thereby allowing a data flow graph to be devised for a specific problem to be solved. The Pyre framework, developed at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and now being used as the basis for next-generation radar processing at JPL, is a Python-based software framework. We have extended the Pyre framework to include new facilities to deploy processing components as services, including components that monitor and assess the state of the distributed network for eventual real-time control of grid resources.

Water Network Tool for Resilience (WNTR)

The Water Network Tool for Resilience (WNTR) is an open source Python package designed to simulate and analyze resilience of water distribution networks. The United States Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories, developed WNTR to integrate critical aspects of resilience modeling for water distribution networks into a single software framework. The software includes capability to: • Generate water network models • Modify network structure and operations • Assign fragility and survival curves to network components • Model disruptive events such as power outages, earthquakes, fires, pipe breaks, and contamination incidents • Model response and repair strategies • Simulate hydraulics and water quality • Evaluate resilience using a wide range of metrics • Integrate dependency with other critical infrastructure and supply chains • Analyze results and generate graphics SAND2019-450 M
