Highly Contrasting Static Charging and Bias Stress Effects in Pentacene Transistors with Polystyrene Heterostructures Incorporating Oxidizable N , N '-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aniline Side Chains as Gate Dielectrics

Charge storage and trapping properties of polymer dielectrics govern the charge densities of adjacent semiconductors and greatly influence the on-off switching voltage (threshold voltage, V th ) of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) when the polymers are used as gate insulators. Intentional charging of polymer dielectrics in OFETs can change V th and affect the bias stress. We describe a chemical design and fabrication protocol to construct multilayer-stack dielectrics for pentacene-based OFETs using different polystyrene (PS)-based polymers in each layer, with oxidizable N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)anilino (TPAOMe)-substituted styrene copolymers in arbitrary vertical positions in the stacks. Thermal, byproduct-free crosslinking of benzocyclobutene subunits provides integrity to the multilayer structure by preventing dissolution of the previous deposited layer. Neutron reflectivity data verified the multilayer morphology. We compared the Vth shift before and after charging the stacks by application of ±100V across 0.5-1 µm total film thicknesses. Bias stress was the dominant effect in bilayer devices with a TPAOMe layer in contact with the pentacene, indicated by the direction of V th shift associated with either polarity of external electric field. In structures with no TPAOMe subunit in contact with the pentacene, when charging with -100V on top of the source and drain electrodes, electron injection from pentacene to dielectric was the major charging mechanism, again consistent with the bias stress direction. When charging with +100V, bilayer devices without TPAOMe showed little change in V th , suggesting there was no bias stress effect or charge injection in these devices for this charging polarity. For the bilayer devices with the TPAOMe layer in the bottom, and the trilayer devices with TPOMe in the middle, when +100V was applied, the V th shifts were opposite those expected from bias stress. Dipole formation or partial ionization of chargeable groups at the interface between the dielectric layers are likely polarization mechanisms in these cases. A simple analytical model supports the plausibility of these mechanisms. This work provides examples of both stabilization and shifting of V th , and therefore controlling charge carrier density, in semiconductors overlying the dielectric multilayers.

Direct measurement of the static and transient magneto-optical permittivity of cobalt across the entire M -edge in reflection geometry by use of polarization scanning

The microscopic state of a magnetic material is characterized by its resonant magneto-optical response through the off-diagonal dielectric tensor component ε xy . However, the measurement of the full complex ε xy in the extreme ultraviolet spectral region covering the M absorption edges of 3d ferromagnets is challenging due to the need for either a careful polarization analysis, which is complicated by a lack of efficient polarization analyzers, or scanning the angle of incidence in fine steps. Here, we propose and demonstrate a technique to extract the complex resonant permittivity ε xy simply by scanning the polarization angle of linearly polarized high harmonics to measure the magneto-optical asymmetry in reflection geometry. Because this technique is more practical and faster to experimentally implement than previous approaches, we can directly measure the full time evolution of ε xy (t) during laser-induced demagnetization across the entire M 2,3 absorption edge of cobalt with femtosecond time resolution. We find that for polycrystalline Co films on an insulating substrate, the changes in ε xy are uniform throughout the spectrum, to within our experimental precision. This result suggests that, in the regime of strong demagnetization, the ultrafast demagnetization response is primarily dominated by magnon generation. Here, we estimate the contribution of exchange-splitting reduction to the ultrafast demagnetization process to be no more than 25%.

Static and dynamic properties of atomic nuclei with high-resolution potentials

Here, we compute ground-state and dynamical properties of 4 He and 16 O nuclei using as input high-resolution, phenomenological nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces that are local in coordinate space. The nuclear Schrodinger equation for both nuclei is accurately solved employing the auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo approach. For the 4 He nucleus, detailed benchmarks are carried out with the hyperspherical harmonics method. In addition to presenting results for the binding energies and radii, we also analyze the momentum distributions of these nuclei and their Euclidean response function corresponding to the isoscalar density transition. The latter quantity is particularly relevant for lepton-nucleus scattering experiments, as it paves the way to quantum Monte Carlo calculations of electroweak response functions of 16 O.

Online Static Load Model Estimation in Distribution Systems: Preprint

The paper focuses on parameter identification for time varying voltage dependent polynomial load models, namely the constant impedance (Z), constant current (I), and constant power (P), in the distribution systems. Typically, parameter identification has been done for aggregated loads at substations for the transmission planning studies. Given the higher voltage volatility faced by active distribution systems, this paper takes the load model estimation to the distribution networks. The paper assumes the presence of measurements at the distribution nodes from various sources, each at varying temporal resolutions. Least squares estimation (LSE) method with bounded variables is used to convert the measurements into ZIP parameter estimations for loads at various locations of the feeder. The results and discussions focus on some of the estimation issues faced in a distribution system due to varying voltage sensitivities of loads along a feeder, measurement resolution, impact of window size and sampling rate of measurement data, and the use of dynamic simulations to create synthetic measurement data in the absence of real ones.

Static Corrosion Summary: Static Corrosion Testing, Haynes 230 Recession Rate, Chloride Salts

In this project, the best material and processes that we have available now are used build a pump for validation testing and to be able to provide a quotation for a pump for the Gen3 CSP Phase 3 test facility. Enough high temperature and aged material data is collected to be able to safely design a pump with a high level of confidence of good performance. Manufacturing processes for the nano-composite material including spray coating and joining methods are investigated. These processes enable application of this novel material to pump components.

A quasi-static particle-in-cell algorithm based on an azimuthal Fourier decomposition for highly efficient simulations of plasma-based acceleration: QPAD

The three-dimensional (3D) quasi-static particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm is a very efficient method for modeling short-pulse laser or relativistic charged particle beam–plasma interactions. In this algorithm, the plasma response, i.e., plasma wave wake, to a non-evolving laser or particle beam is calculated using a set of Maxwell’s equations based on the quasi-static approximate equations that exclude radiation. The plasma fields are then used to advance the laser or beam forward using a large time step. The algorithm is many orders of magnitude faster than a 3D fully explicit relativistic electromagnetic PIC algorithm. It has been shown to be capable to accurately model the evolution of lasers and particle beams in a variety of scenarios. Additionally, at the same time, an algorithm in which the fields, currents and Maxwell equations are decomposed into azimuthal harmonics has been shown to reduce the algorithmic complexity of a 3D explicit PIC algorithm to that of a 2D algorithm when the expansion is truncated while maintaining accuracy for problems with near azimuthal symmetry. This hybrid algorithm uses a PIC description in r–z and a gridless description in . We describe a novel method that combines the quasi-static and hybrid PIC methods. This algorithm expands the fields, charge and current density into azimuthal harmonics. A set of the quasi-static field equations is derived for each harmonic. The complex amplitudes of the fields are then solved using the finite difference method. The beam and plasma particles are advanced in Cartesian coordinates using the total fields. Details on how this algorithm was implemented using a similar workflow to an existing quasi-static code, QuickPIC, are presented. The new code is called QPAD for QuickPIC with Azimuthal Decomposition. Benchmarks and comparisons between a fully 3D explicit PIC code (OSIRIS), a full 3D quasi-static code (QuickPIC), and the new quasi-static PIC code with azimuthal decomposition (QPAD) are also presented.

Performance tradeoffs in static and dynamic load balancing strategies

The problem of uniformly distributing the load of a parallel program over a multiprocessor system was considered. A program was analyzed whose structure permits the computation of the optimal static solution. Then four strategies for load balancing were described and their performance compared. The strategies are: (1) the optimal static assignment algorithm which is guaranteed to yield the best static solution, (2) the static binary dissection method which is very fast but sub-optimal, (3) the greedy algorithm, a static fully polynomial time approximation scheme, which estimates the optimal solution to arbitrary accuracy, and (4) the predictive dynamic load balancing heuristic which uses information on the precedence relationships within the program and outperforms any of the static methods. It is also shown that the overhead incurred by the dynamic heuristic is reduced considerably if it is started off with a static assignment provided by either of the other three strategies.
