Mechanically Accelerated Depolymerization of Entangled Linear Polymer Melts

Mechanical forces can enhance the chemical depolymerization of synthetic polymers when shear flow accelerates chain scission. To quantify the extent of mechanically-accelerated scission, the effect of simple shear flow (duration and strength) with low Weissenberg and Deborah numbers was investigated by considering the impact of applied work in both simple shear and shear dominated mixed flows. Hydrogenated polyisoprene was chosen as a model linear, entangled system. The conditions (strain amplitude, frequency, and shearing time) necessary to increase chain scission were assessed in the rubbery melt. Shear flow accelerated chain scission at higher temperatures, suggesting an activated process. Isothermal scission versus work curves were superposed by applying shift factors a T,S , whose Arrhenius-like temperature dependence gave an apparent activation energy for chain scission of ~ 110 kJ/mol, which is likely a combination of the activation energy of viscosity and bond energy. This work provides a base for quantifying the impact of shear on depolymerization of polymer melts and highlight the connection between viscous dissipation and scission chemistry.

Upcycling Polynorbornene Derivatives into Chemically Recyclable Multiblock Linear and Thermoset Plastics

Synthetic polymers have found widespread use, but their ineffective end-of-life treatment is causing a significant environmental and human health crisis. Here, we demonstrate the upcycling of polynorbornene derivatives (pNBEs) through their deconstruction into distinct oligomeric buildings blocks that can be repolymerized into chemically recyclable pNBEs-like multiblock polymers via dehydrogenative polymerization. The resulting materials exhibit diverse mechanical properties, while integrating high melting temperatures (T m as high as 133 °C). Notably, this method could also enable the selective deconstruction of permanently cross-linked polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) thermosets into telechelic-OH functionalized oligomers, overcoming the significant challenges posed by their robust network structure in recycling and degradation. The resulting pDCPD oligomers can subsequently be repolymerized with macrodiols to create multiblock thermosets with tunable mechanical properties, including Young's modulus and tensile elongation. After use, upcycled plastics could be effectively deconstructed back to the oligomers for recovery and repolymerization. Overall, this work establishes an approach that can be utilized to upcycle pNBEs into previously inaccessible multiblock thermosets and thermoplastics with full recyclability, and may be generalizable to a range of polymers to shift their end-of-life waste disposal toward sustainable recovery and reuse.

Revisiting the activity of two poly(vinyl chloride)- and polyethylene-degrading enzymes

Biocatalytic degradation of non-hydrolyzable plastics is a rapidly growing field of research, driven by the global accumulation of waste. Enzymes capable of cleaving the carbon-carbon bonds in synthetic polymers are highly sought-after as they may provide tools for environmentally friendly plastic recycling. Despite some reports of oxidative enzymes acting on non-hydrolyzable plastics, including polyethylene or poly(vinyl chloride), the notion that these materials are susceptible to efficient enzymatic degradation remains controversial, partly driven by a general lack of studies independently reproducing previous observations. Here, we attempt to replicate two recent studies reporting that deconstruction of polyethylene and poly(vinyl chloride) can be achieved using an insect hexamerin from Galleria mellonella (so-called “Ceres”) or a bacterial catalase-peroxidase from Klebsiella sp., respectively. Reproducing previously described experiments, we do not observe any activity on plastics using multiple reaction conditions and multiple substrate types. Digging deeper into the discrepancies between the previous data and our observations, we show how and why the original experimental results may have been misinterpreted.

Dynamic Implications of Noncovalent Interactions in Amphiphilic Single-Chain Polymer Nanoparticles

Single-chain polymer nanoparticles (SCNPs) combine the chemical diversity of synthetic polymers with the intricate structure of biopolymers, generating versatile biomimetic materials. The mobility of polymer chain segments at length scales similar to secondary structural elements in proteins is critical to SCNP structure and thus function. However, the influence of noncovalent interactions used to form SCNPs (e.g., hydrogen-bonding and biomimetic secondary-like structure) on these conformational dynamics is challenging to quantitatively assess. To isolate the effects of noncovalent interactions on SCNP structure and conformational dynamics, we synthesized a series of amphiphilic copolymers containing dimethylacrylamide and monomers capable of forming these different interactions: (1) di(phenylalanine) acrylamide that forms intramolecular β-sheet-like cross-links, (2) phenylalanine acrylamide that forms hydrogen-bonds but lacks a defined local structure, and (3) benzyl acrylamide that has the lowest propensity for hydrogen-bonding. Each SCNP formed folded structures comparable to those of intrinsically disordered proteins, as observed by size exclusion chromatography and small angle neutron scattering. The dynamics of these polymers, as characterized by a combination of dynamic light scattering and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, was well described using the Zimm with internal friction (ZIF) model, highlighting the role of each noncovalent interaction to additively restrict the internal relaxations of SCNPs. These results demonstrate the utility of local scale interactions to control SCNP polymer dynamics, guiding the design of functional biomimetic materials with refined binding sites and tunable kinetics.

Simple Monomers for Precise Polymer Functionalization During Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Controlling the monomer sequence of synthetic polymers is a grand challenge in polymer science. Conventional sequence control has been achieved in dispersed polymers by exploiting the kinetic tendencies of monomers and their order of addition. While the sequence of blocks in multiblock copolymers can be readily tuned using sequential addition of monomers (SAM), control over the sequence distribution is eroded as the targeted block size approaches a single monomer unit (i.e., X n ~ 1) due to the stochastic nature of chain-growth reactions. Thus, unique monomers are needed to ensure precise single additions. Herein, we investigate common classes of cyclic olefin monomers for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to identify monomers for single unit addition during sequential monomer addition synthesis. Through careful analysis of polymerization kinetics, we find that easily synthesized oxanorbornene imide monomers are suitable for single-addition reactions. With the identified monomers, we demonstrate the synthesis of multiblock copolymers containing up to three precise functionalization sites and singly cross-linked four-armed star copolymers. In conclusion, we envision that expanded kinetic analyses of monomer reactivities in ROMP reactions will enable novel polymer synthesis capabilities such as the autonomous synthesis of sequence-defined polymers or one-shot multiblock copolymer syntheses.

RNA–Polymer Conjugates via Direct Incorporation of the Chain Transfer Agent and PET–RAFT Polymerization

Covalent conjugation of RNA with synthetic polymers has emerged as a powerful approach for creating bioconjugates with synergistically enhanced properties. However, conventional methods require solid-phase synthesis to preinstall functional groups in RNA, significantly limiting practical applications. Here, we present a novel approach for synthesizing RNA–polymer conjugates via direct incorporation of chain transfer agent (CTA) into RNA through acylation chemistry and reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. A CTA-functionalized acyl imidazole reagent was synthesized to facilitate direct and covalent modification of various RNAs by reacting with their 2′-hydroxyl groups. Subsequent RAFT polymerization using RNA–CTA as a macro-CTA enabled direct grafting-from RNA, yielding RNA conjugates with controlled molecular weight and low dispersity. Notably, this postsynthetic modification strategy was successfully extended to modify biomass RNA, yielding thermoresponsive conjugates and biodegradable hydrogels. Overall, this advance allowed for the direct modification of synthetic and biomass RNAs, significantly enhancing the accessibility of functional RNA–polymer materials.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels with Broad-Range Tunable Mechanical Properties via the Hofmeister Effect

Hydrogels, exhibiting wide applications in soft robotics, tissue engineering, implantable electronics, etc., often require sophisticately tailoring of the hydrogel mechanical properties to meet specific demands. For examples, soft robotics necessitates tough hydrogels; stem cell culturing demands various tissue-matching modulus; and neuron probes desire dynamically tunable modulus. Herein, a strategy to broadly alter the mechanical properties of hydrogels reversibly via tuning the aggregation states of the polymer chains by ions based on the Hofmeister effect is reported. An ultratough poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel as an exemplary material (toughness 150 ± 20 MJ m -3 ), which surpasses synthetic polymers like poly(dimethylsiloxane), synthetic rubber, and natural spider silk is fabricated. With various ions, the hydrogel's various mechanical properties are continuously and reversibly in situ modulated over a large window: tensile strength from 50 ± 9 kPa to 15 ± 1 MPa, toughness from 0.0167 ± 0.003 to 150 ± 20 MJ m -3 , elongation from 300 ± 100% to 2100 ± 300%, and modulus from 24 ± 2 to 2500 ± 140 kPa. Importantly, the ions serve as gelation triggers and property modulators only, not necessarily required to remain in the gel, maintaining the high biocompatibility of PVA without excess ions. Overall, this strategy, enabling high mechanical performance and broad dynamic tunability, presents a universal platform for broad applications from biomedicine to wearable electronics.

Polymer Macrocycles: A novel topology to control dynamics of rubbery materials

We have successfully made synthetic polymer rings that are larger than previously reported having entanglement numbers as high as $Z_w$≈300 if the rings entangled as do linear chains. The synthesis was carried out using reversible radical recombination polymerization (R3P) of dithiols which produces a polymer with a very small persistence length. The reported results show surprising dilute solution behaviors due to the fact that polymeric rings expand more than their linear counterparts for polymer chains having a large number of persistence lengths, as developed in this study. The results strongly argue for a systematic investigation of the dilute solution properties of rings having different persistence lengths in different quality solvents, where the theta-condition should lead to results that are independent of the persistence length. For the rheological investigations related to chain entanglements, the polyDODT rings could be diluted so that the rheological data covered from less than one entanglement spacing relative to the linear counterpart to a value of $Z_w$=300. Importantly, because we were able to dilute extremely high entanglement number polyDODT rings to a similar entanglement number as those reported for polystyrene rings that were highly purified using LCCC, we demonstrated that the dynamics of the polyDODT rings virtually overlaps with the dynamics of the polystyrene rings which is very strong evidence that these high molecular weight polyDODT rings are of high purity. Our results demonstrate that the onset of entanglement in rings, as evidenced by the appearance of a rubbery plateau $G_N^0$ and by the onset of a strong power-law dependence of the viscosity on molecular weight (η~$M_w^{5.8}$) or entanglement number (η~$Z_w^{5.8}$), occurs at much higher molecular weights or polymer concentrations than is the case for linear chains. These results should serve as a benchmark for future investigations of the behavior of entangled, circular macromolecules.

Self-Assembly of Repetitive Segment and Random Segment Polymer Architectures

Recent advances in chemical synthesis have created new methodologies for synthesizing sequence-controlled synthetic polymers, but rational design of monomer sequence for desired properties remains challenging. In this work, we synthesize periodic polymers with repetitive segments using a sequence-controlled ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) method, which draws inspiration from proteins containing repetitive sequence motifs. The repetitive segment architecture is shown to dramatically affect the self-assembly behavior of these materials. In this work, our results show that polymers with identical repetitive sequences assemble into uniform spherical nanoparticles after thermal annealing, whereas copolymers with random placement of segments with different sequences exhibit disordered assemblies without a well-defined morphology. Overall, these results bring a new understanding to the role of periodic repetitive sequences in polymer assembly.

Bidirectional Suzuki Catalyst Transfer Polymerization of Poly( p -phenylene)

Suzuki catalyst transfer polymerization (SCTP) has emerged as an effective method for accessing length-controlled π-conjugated poly(p-phenylene). Regio-controlled functional group sequencing along the backbone and the chain ends of synthetic polymers remains a challenge for the successful integration of organic semiconductors in sensors and electronic devices. Here, we report a bidirectional SCTP system based on dinuclear palladium(II) initiators. Functional groups transferred during the initiation and termination steps unlock independently addressable synthetic handles at the polymer core and respective chain ends. These functional groups open opportunities for late-stage regio-controlled and chemoselective derivatizations. Control over key polymer parameters, including molecular weight (M n ), dispersity ( Đ = M w /M n ), degree of polymerization ( DP ), termination efficiency, and functional group interconversion, is corroborated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and NMR spectroscopy. The modular design of SCTP initiators, in combination with commercially available terminating groups, represents a highly flexible toolbox for late-stage polymer conjugation, e.g., chemoselective anchoring groups for integration with functional electronics or bioorthogonal conjugation for molecular sensing.

We describe synthetic methods for multiple library sizes and structures as well as characterization methods to rapidly generate data sets, including tools that can be adapted from biological workflows. We further highlight relevant insights from statistics and machine learning to aid in data featurization, representation, and analysis. This Perspective acts as a “user guide” for researchers interested in leveraging high-throughput screening toward the design of multifunctional polymers and predictive modeling of structure–property relationships in soft materials.

Tailoring Hierarchical Structure and Rare Earth Affinity of Compositionally Identical Polymers via Sequence Control

Macromolecule sequence, structure, and function are inherently intertwined. While well-established relationships exist in proteins, they are more challenging to define for synthetic polymer nanoparticles due to their molecular weight, sequence, and conformational dispersities. Furthermore, to explore the impact of sequence on nanoparticle structure, we synthesized a set of 16 compositionally identical, sequence-controlled polymers with distinct monomer patterning of dimethyl acrylamide and a bioinspired, structure-driving di(phenylalanine) acrylamide (FF). Sequence control was achieved through multiblock polymerizations, yielding unique ensembles of polymer sequences which were simulated by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Systematic analysis of the global (tertiary- and quaternary-like) structure in this amphiphilic copolymer series revealed the effect of multiple sequence descriptors: the number of domains, the hydropathy of terminal domains, and the patchiness (density) of FF within a domain, each of which impacted both chain collapse and the distribution of single- and multichain assemblies. Furthermore, both the conformational freedom of chain segments and local-scale, β-sheet-like interactions were sensitive to the patchiness of FF. To connect sequence, structure, and target function, we evaluated an additional series of nine sequence-controlled copolymers as sequestrants for rare earth elements (REEs) by incorporating a functional acrylic acid monomer into select polymer scaffolds. We identified key sequence variables that influence the binding affinity, capacity, and selectivity of the polymers for REEs. Collectively, these results highlight the potential of and boundaries of sequence control via multiblock polymerizations to drive primary sequence ensembles hierarchical structures, and ultimately the functionality of compositionally identical polymeric materials.

Accessing pluripotent materials through tempering of dynamic covalent polymer networks

Pluripotency, which is defined as a system not fixed as to its developmental potentialities, is typically associated with biology and stem cells. Here, inspired by this concept, we report synthetic polymers that act as a single “pluripotent” feedstock and can be differentiated into a range of materials that exhibit different mechanical properties, from hard and brittle to soft and extensible. To achieve this, we have exploited dynamic covalent networks that contain labile, dynamic thia-Michael bonds, whose extent of bonding can be thermally modulated and retained through tempering, akin to the process used in metallurgy. In addition, we show that the shape memory behavior of these materials can be tailored through tempering and that these materials can be patterned to spatially control mechanical properties.

Recycling of Printed Circuit Boards to Recover Critical Materials

The printed circuit board (PCB), a central component of most electronic devices, represents a significant fraction of the electronic product waste stream. The complex composition of PCBs, consisting of metals, polymers, and fiberglass, requires specialized recovery steps to reclaim valuable and critical materials and the safe disposal of brominated compounds. In this review paper, we describe the current state of critical material recovery and traditional recycling technologies and identify key obstacles to large-scale implementation. Metals present at high concentrations, such as copper, lead, and iron, are conventionally recovered from PCBs using hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, or electrometallurgical processes. Hydrometallurgical methods achieve high selectivity through chemical leaching but pose significant challenges for effluent and reagent recovery. Pyrometallurgical methods facilitate rapid metal separation through smelting but require substantial energy and may release harmful gases. Electrometallurgical techniques produce high-purity metals but are constrained by pretreatment requirements and the consumption of energy. The non-metallic fraction of PCB waste is recycled using thermochemical conversion, microwave-aided heating, and direct recycling of epoxy–fiberglass composites, enabling material or energy recovery. The recovered polymer from direct recycling may have reduced mechanical strength and poor compatibility with new polymer matrices, and the resulting products from the thermal conversion suffer from incomplete conversion, degradation of quality, and residual contamination, as compared to synthetic polymers. Recent process developments have focused on extracting rare earth and supply-critical materials present at lower concentrations in the waste stream. The literature on existing and emerging approaches for recycling PCB wastes is reviewed to identify sustainable, economically viable, and environmentally responsible strategies for the recovery and reuse of critical materials from waste streams.

Exact statistics of helical wormlike chains with twist-bend coupling

Here, we present a solution for the Green's function for the general case of a helical wormlike chain with twist-bend coupling and demonstrate the applicability of our solution for evaluating general structural and mechanical chain properties. We find that twist-bend coupling renormalizes the persistence length and the force-extension curves relative to wormlike chains. Analysis of intrinsically twisted polymers shows that incorporation of twist-bend coupling results in the oscillatory behavior in principal tangent correlations that are observed in some studies of synthetic polymers. The exact nature of our solution provides a framework to evaluate the role of twist-bend coupling on polymer properties, such as DNA bound to histones and motivates the reinterpretation of existing biopolymer experimental data.

Production and Evaluation of Fluorophore-Doped Polymer Substrates to Screen for Plastic-Degrading Enzymes

Fast and sensitive analytical methods are the key to efficient screening of plastic-degrading enzymes. Here, we present a streamlined and affordable approach to assess the enzymatic deconstruction of insoluble synthetic polymers by blending them with a fluorescent dye, rhodamine 6G, and we evaluate this screening method using poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) as a model material. Our results indicate that enzymatic depolymerization of the rhodamine-doped PET can be observed in a high-throughput fashion by following release of the fluorophore. The fluorescence data obtained during the hydrolysis of rhodamine-doped PET by 14 PET hydrolases, produced with a robotic platform, correlated with the quantitative chromatographic analysis of PET degradation products. Remarkably, the use of the rhodamine-loaded PET substrate resulted in negligibly low background signals even when detecting PETase activity in crude cell lysates, suggesting suitability for screening of a wide variety of samples. Encouraged by these results, we next produced a selection of polyethylene- and nylon-based materials loaded with rhodamine 6G. While rapid leaching of fluorophore observed with nylon substrates limits the utility of the method for detecting nylonase activity, the rhodamine-loaded polyethylene showed promising performance in passive diffusion tests, indicating that this latter substrate may be used to screen for polyolefin-degrading enzymes.
