Digital CODEC for real-time processing of broadcast quality video signals at 1.8 bits/pixel

Advances in very large scale integration and recent work in the field of bandwidth efficient digital modulation techniques have combined to make digital video processing technically feasible an potentially cost competitive for broadcast quality television transmission. A hardware implementation was developed for DPCM (differential pulse code midulation)-based digital television bandwidth compression algorithm which processes standard NTSC composite color television signals and produces broadcast quality video in real time at an average of 1.8 bits/pixel. The data compression algorithm and the hardware implementation of the codec are described, and performance results are provided.

Flared-cone turnstile antenna

Antenna could be used in any application where increased ultrahigh frequency beamwidth is desired. Possible applications include aircraft, communication links, ground omniranges, and satellites. It is also possible that antenna could be adapted for use in television transmission and receiving.

Skylab Experiment M516 - Crew Activities/Maintenance Study

Skylab required daily movement about the interior of a 340 cu m vehicle and the handling and transfer of numerous loose items. Planned and unplanned maintenance tasks were also included in the daily routine of activity. Experiment M516, Crew Activities/Maintenance Study, involved an investigation of crew activity during routine daily operations. The overall objective was to secure in-flight data relevant to the performance of tasks in the weightless environment. This paper will present an evaluation of man's ability to handle and transport items of various sizes and masses (logistics management) and to make equipment repairs (maintenance). Results and conclusions are based on subjective crew comments, motion-picture film, and television transmissions.

Apollo Soyuz test project press kit: USA-USSR

The goals and program of the mission are described. Operations from preflight crew training through splashdown are included. Spacecraft and launch vehicle configurations are given. The 27 joint and unilateral experiments to be performed are described. A flight plan and a schedule of activities is included, together with brief crew biographies. The ground support system is discussed; it includes control centers in Houston and Moscow, and an ATS satellite to relay ground-air-ground communications. The global tracking network and the television transmission system are also described.

SETI - A preliminary search for narrowband signals at microwave frequencies

In the search for intelligent signals of extraterrestrial origin, certain forms of signals merit immediate and special attention. Extremely narrowband signals of spectral width similar to our own television transmissions are most favored energetically and least likely to be confused with natural celestial emission. A search of selected stars has been initiated using observational and data processing techniques optimized for the detection of such signals. These techniques allow simultaneous observation of 10 to the 5th to 10 to the 6th channels within the observed spectral range. About two hundred nearby (within 80 LY) solar type stars have been observed at frequencies near the main microwave transitions of the hydroxyl radical. In addition, several molecular (hydroxyl) masers and other non-thermal sources have been observed in this way in order to uncover any possible fine spectral structure of natural origin and to investigate the potential of such an instrument for radioastronomy.

Beyond the supercomputer

A NASA-directed development of massively parallel processor (MPP) computers is outlined, noting intended applications for data processing for near term earth resource and environment mapping, radar, and television transmissions. The MPP is designed to perform 100 billion operations/sec to obtain satisfactory image processing, while separate processing units correct distortions, register images, calculate correlation functions, and classify multispectral characteristics. Arrays of 1s and 0s will be manipulated in analog-to-digital conversions generating separate planes corresponding to powers of binaries. Data wires are replaced by fiber-optic tubes or thousands of wires, and single logic gates are replaced by thousands of logic gates and every memory element by thousands of memory elements. Features of the interconnections and the images control processor units are detailed, along with implementation of sliders for program flexibility.

Iowa satellite project ISAT-1

Satellite systems to date have been mainly scientific in nature. Only a few systems have been of direct use to the public such as for telephone or television transmission. Space enterprises have remained a mystery to the general public and beyond the reach of the small business community. The result is a less than supportive public when it comes to space activities. The purpose of the ISAT-1 program is to develop a small and relatively inexpensive satellite that will serve the State of Iowa, primarily for educational purposes. It will provide products, services, and activities that will be educational, practical, and useful for a large number for people. The emphasis is on public awareness, 'space literacy', and routine practical applications rather than high technology. The initial conceptual design phase was complete when the current team took over the project. Some areas of the conceptual design were taken a little farther, but for the most part this team started at the detailed design stage.

The Spaceflight Revolution Revisited

This essay will first consider whether technological breakthroughs in space technology and the rational motives of ordinary institutions have the capacity to break out of this relatively static situation. Then we will survey the roles that social movements of various kinds might play and conclude with an examination of one particular nascent movement that might possibly build the foundation for a spacefaring civilization. A third of a century ago, practical nuclear fission rockets were under development, but this approach now seems environmentally unacceptable. It is hard to devise a more environmentally benign propellant than the hydrogen and oxygen used by the main engines of the Space Shuttle. There is some hope that nanotechnology will save the day with materials based on carbon nanotubes that are vastly stronger yet lighter than metals.6 However, the X-33 failure shows that it is not easy to work with radically new structural materials in demanding aerospace applications, and we may be many decades away from being able to manufacture propellant tanks, wings, and other large structures from carbon nanotubes. Satellites in low-Earth and synchronous orbit are of great importance in the collection and distribution of information, thus essential to the information economy. The wide range of civilian applications includes telephone, data transmission, television, navigation, weather observation, agriculture monitoring, and prospecting for natural resources.8 The technology is largely perfected, and incremental progress can be achieved by improvement in information systems and simply by investing in more relatively small satellites of the kinds we already have.

Carrier - Interference ratios for frequency sharing between satellite systems transmitting frequency modulated and digital television signals

As the data rates required for digitally encoded television are reduced, satellite systems employing the transmission of digitally encoded television will become attractive. It is likely that television transmitted in this format will be adjacent to or in the same frequency band as television transmissions in other modulation formats, so a knowledge of carrier to interference power ratios as a function of assessed picture quality will be required for frequency sharing between these different modulation formats. This paper presents the results of subjective and quantitative tests describing the results of interference to a particular digital television system from a frequency modulated (FM) television system, and for interference to an FM television system from a digital television system.

Digital compression algorithms for HDTV transmission

Digital compression of video images is a possible avenue for high definition television (HDTV) transmission. Compression needs to be optimized while picture quality remains high. Two techniques for compression the digital images are explained and comparisons are drawn between the human vision system and artificial compression techniques. Suggestions for improving compression algorithms through the use of neural and analog circuitry are given.
