Design of microwave broadband CMOS transmitter and receiver circuits for MIR and ECEI plasma diagnostics

To efficiently determine the plasma electron density fluctuations using the MIR diagnostic technique, a 55–75 GHz 65 nm-CMOS transmitter has been developed where four separate intermediate frequency (IF) signals are up-converted, amplified, and then combined to generate an 8-tone RF output; a broadband 90 nm-CMOS receiver has also been constructed, which consists of an RF-low noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, and IF amplifier. The circuits and their corresponding modules will soon be deployed on the DIII-D and NSTX-U fusion devices. A 110–140 GHz 65 nm-CMOS receiver has also been designed, which is suitable for measuring the deep-core temperature fluctuations in the DIII-D tokamak using the electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic system. In addition to the RF-LNA/balun, mixer, and IF amplifier, an LO balun/tripler and driving amplifier are now included in this highly integrated circuit chip. By adopting the microwave and millimeterwave system-on-chip concept in the front-end system design, this paper demonstrates that compact transmitter and receiver modules can be easily built, which, in turn, facilitates array implementation and maintenance.

A 20 Gbps PAM4 data transmitter ASIC for particle physics experiments

We present the design and test results of a novel data transmitter ASIC operating up to 20.48 Gbps with 4-level Pulse-Amplitude-Modulation (PAM4) for particle physics experiments. This ASIC, named GBS20, is fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS technology. Two serializers share a 5.12 GHz Phase Locked Loop (PLL) clock. The outputs from the serializers are combined into a PAM4 signal that directly drives a Vertical-Cavity-Surface-Emitting-Laser (VCSEL). The input data channels, each at 1.28 Gbps, are scrambled with an internal 2$^{7}$-1 Pseudo-Random Binary Sequence (PRBS), which also serves as a frame aligner. GBS20 is tested to work at 10.24 and 20.48 Gbps with a VCSEL-based Transmitter-Optical-Subassembly (TOSA). The power consumption of GBS20 is below 238 mW and reduced to 164 mW in the low-power mode.

Harvesting Wave Energy to Power Acoustic Transmitters Using Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Wave energy has the largest reserves and widest distribution among blue energy sources. However, the conversion and utilization of ocean wave energy are challenging. In this work, we developed a contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with a simple structure for harvesting wave energy and powering marine sensors and transmitters and performed detailed electrical characterization under controlled laboratory conditions. A prototype power management circuit (PMC) was implemented to improve the output performance of the TENG. The output from the PMC could charge up a storage capacitor for powering sensors and electronics. Eventually, the TENG was integrated within a water-proof enclosure and tested using a custom-built wave simulator to evaluate the device performance in a more representative scenario. The device sustainably powered up an array of 27 LEDs and was able to charge up a capacitor up to 1.8 V for driving an acoustic transmitter. The results demonstrate that TENG technology shows great promise in harvesting low-frequency ocean wave energy.

New method for the determination of photoabsorption from transmittance measurements in the extreme ultraviolet

We have developed a new method for the determination of photoabsorption at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths longer than 20 nm, where reliable refractive index values are sparse or non-existent. Our method overcomes the obstacle of multiple reflections that occur inside thin films in this spectral range, which up until now has prevented the accurate determination of photoabsorption from transmittance measurements. We have derived a mathematical expression that is independent of internal reflection amplitudes, while taking advantage of the transmittance oscillations stemming from such reflections. The method is validated on measurements of aluminum thin films. This advance will enable accurate refractive index values for many important materials for optical instrumentation, thus facilitating high-priority research on topics including coherent light sources, planetary and solar physics, and semiconductor manufacturing.

An Acoustic Transmitter with Intelligent ON/OFF Mechanisms and Quasi-location Awareness

We successfully demonstrated an acoustic transmitter with intelligent ON/OFF mechanisms and quasi-location awareness. The prototype transmitter has (1) the ability (radio frequency-enabled ON/OFF) to turn the tag on and off when it passes through a passive integrated transponder antenna and (2) the ability to detect significant salinity changes (i.e. from freshwater to sea water and vice versa) and turn itself off and on, respectively. Such a device would greatly enhance the capabilities of the acoustic telemetry-based fish tracking systems.

Deficiency in transmitter release triggers homeostatic transcriptional changes that increase presynaptic excitability

Weakening of synaptic transmission at theDrosophilalarval neuromuscular junction triggers two forms of homeostatic compensation, one that increases the probability of glutamate release per action potential (P r ) and another that increases motoneuron (MN) activity. We investigated the molecular changes in MNs that underlie the increase in MN activity. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis on MNs whose glutamate release is weakened by knockdown of components of the MN transmitter release machinery reveals a reduction in expression of a group of genes that encode potassium channels and their positive modulators. These results identify a mechanism of compensation for weakened synaptic transmission by MNs, which engages a transcriptional program in those cells to increase firing and, thereby, ensure sufficient locomotory drive.

Dual-polarization O-band silicon photonics transmitter with an integrated tunable laser, Mach-Zehnder modulators, and SOAs

Presented is an O-band silicon photonics dual-polarization coherent/IMDD modulator integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers and tunable laser to enhance the short-reach link budget. The laser demonstrated output power >6 dBm and a <250 kHz linewidth over a 14 nm tuning range. Modulators paired with custom 64 Gbaud QPSK drivers exhibited improved analog link sensitivity compared to similar devices without integrated gain sections. They also demonstrated 53 Gbaud dual-polarization PAM4 operation when characterized with a linear driver and MaxLinear 100G/lane DSP board. Both optical links achieved BERs at the KP4-FEC threshold and overall transmitter assembly energy consumption <6.9 pJ/bit without any thermal control when at steady room temperatures.

Wireless System Development for GaN-Based Transmitters for Advanced Nuclear Reactor Environments

The market for consumer electronics is dominated by Si-based electronics. Many Si-based complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) devices are reaching their limitations in terms of switching frequencies, voltages, currents, and temperatures. Furthermore, these devices are widely known to be susceptible to ionizing radiation and neutrons. Advanced nuclear reactors, especially microreactors and small modular reactors, require wireless electronics that can survive larger neutron and gamma doses than Si CMOS. Because of their size, electronics will need to be placed closer to the reactor cores, and cabling capabilities may be limited. However, GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) have been shown to switch faster with higher gains, and they can achieve current and voltage limits beyond traditional Si CMOS. However, they have less market maturity and have undergone less testing. These GaN HEMTs have been shown to survive ionizing radiation with little effects, but the effects of neutron radiation remain widely unknown. In this report, a wireless electronic system capable of supporting multiple radiation-hardened (rad-hard) sensors is presented. The proposed transmission scheme was designed to be simple to increase the likelihood of success in the immature GaN HEMT process and in high-radiation environments. The transmission system was tested using software-defined radios to emulate the transmission scheme before the transmitter circuitry in the GaN process was developed.
