MatLib-1.2.2: Nuclear Material Properties Library

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) uses the computer code Fuel Analysis under Steady-state and Transients (FAST) to model steady-state and transient fuel behavior to support regulatory decisions. FAST relies on a material properties library (MatLib) that contains the thermal and mechanical properties of the nuclear materials and coolants of interest to support the U.S. commercial nuclear industry. MatLib contains properties for a variety of nuclear fuels, cladding and other structural materials, gases, and coolants. In this document, material property correlations for the materials contained within MatLib are presented and discussed. When available, comparisons are made between the material property correlations and available data. Additionally, uncertainties are quantified on the material properties, which is then used by the NRC to support uncertainty quantification for best-estimate plus uncertainty safety evaluation reviews. This document describes MatLib-1.2.2, updated from MatLib-1.2.1 to include additional properties for metallic fuel. It is one of a series of documents on FAST; the other documents detail the models used by FAST as well as its integral assessment to experiments and commercial data.

Updates to the n+ 63,65 Cu Evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region [Slides]

This presentation discusses the motivation and background of the n+ 63,65 Cu Evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region which is to study the interaction of neutrons with copper as it is important in nuclear applications since critical assembly configurations include metallic copper as reflector. In support to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP), measurements and related evaluations of 63,65 Cu isotopes were selected to improve the agreement with the benchmarks and to assess the importance of the angular distribution data for reactor calculations. Previous and current evaluation work is supported by an experimental campaign initiated before 2010, the 63,65 Cu R-matrix analysis generated resonance parameters up to 300 keV. However, due to outstanding issues in the benchmark performance, ENDF/B-VIII.0 library released a truncated set of resonance parameters up to 100 keV. The goal of this work is to generate an updated set of resonance parameters in the 100-300 keV range to improve the benchmark performance of 63,65 Cu isotopes. In conclusion, R-matrix analysis to update 63,65 Cu evaluations was performed to simultaneously improve benchmark performance and extend the RRR to 300 keV. The benchmark calculations suggest the increased capture cross sections are beneficial, however, further investigation of the measured capture data is needed to understand the large normalization scaling factor needed to improve the reactivity. Also, the copper-reflected benchmarks indicate the need to further investigate angular distributions and extension of RRR to 300 keV is aided well by level statistics considerations. Work to refine the fit of individual resonances is ongoing.

Core Analysis E-Reports Produced for the Southwest Regional Partnership on Carbon Sequestration for Wells 13-10A, 13-14, and 32-8 of the Farnsworth Unit, Texas

The submission is three electronic reports (e-reports) produced by Terra Tek, a former Schlumberger company, for and under the oversight of the Southwest Regional Partnership on Carbon Sequestration (SWP). The SWP designed and implemented a coring and core analysis program in conjunction with the previous field operator Chaparral Energy, L.L.C. The main SWP contacts who oversaw the coring and core analysis program, including geologic core descriptions and sample selection for testing by the Terra Tek, are listed below in the Authors section. The three reports are for Wells 13-10A, 13-14, and 32-8 of the Farnsworth Unit, TX, a site of the SWP's CO2 storage and enhanced oil recovery project. The e-reports include many data types that are not listed in full detail here, but may include: geomechanical, geochemical, and petrophysical measurements; white light and UV core photos; spectral gamma logs on the core; and Heterogeneous Rock Analysis logs. Fracture core review reports are included for Wells 13-14 and 32-8. The three e-reports each have many subfolders with the various types of data in spreadsheets, pdfs, image files, or other formats. The main e-reports for each well are listed by the well name. The sub-folder “E-Report” for each well has a Report.html file, which, when opened, will have hyperlinks to the various data sets and information. The files in the zipped folder will need to be extracted for the Report.html files to work properly. These authors thank Joseph Hall, a geologist formerly of Chaparral Energy, L.L.C., for assistance in designing the coring program, his geologic expertise of the Farnsworth Unit, and his assistance with characterizing the core. Christopher Gillespie, of Terra Tek at the time, managed the myriad geomechanical, geochemical, and petrophysical measurements provided by Terra Tek for this project. The core from which the samples were collected for this project are housed at the Subsurface Data and Core Libraries of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, Socorro, New Mexico, USA. Funding for this project is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) through the Southwest Regional Partnership on Carbon Sequestration (SWP) under Award No. DE-FC26-05NT42591. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525. These e-reports describe objective technical results and analysis. Any subjective views or opinions that might be expressed in the reports do not necessarily represent the views of the US Department of Energy or the United States Government.

SNL-NJOY-2016

This is a wrapper around the LANL NJOY-2016 code that interfaces with extended code capabilities and minor modification of the LANL NJOY-2016 code that supports modeling radiation damage to materials. The NJOY Nuclear Data Processing System is a modular computer code designed to read evaluated data in ENDF format, transform the data in various ways, and output the results as libraries designed to be used in various applications. The wrapper provided here permits Sandia-specific control parameters to be used in the input data file. The modifications incorporated here enhance the ability of NJOY to address material damage response functions for many materials, e.g. to include the NRT and arc-dpa forms of the damage energy in addition to the default NJOY-2016 implementation of the sharp-threshold Kinchin-Pease threshold energy treatment. All of the modifications provided here are being made available to the GitHub-based NJOY-2016 code. As useful enhancements found here are incorporated into the baseline NJOY-2016 code, they will be eliminated from this version so as to maintain our compatibility with the baseline NJOY-2016 code. Activation Analysis for the Inboard Region of FNSF Using SERPENT

This study describes an application of the SERPENT 2 code with the TENDL-2017 nuclear data library and the latest available model features of the Fusion Energy System Studies–Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF), to evaluate the activation of components after shutdown at 1, 10, and 100 years, assuming a plant lifetime of 8.5 full-power years. The primary parameters evaluated include the specific activity, decay heat, and waste disposal rating (WDR). The specific activity and decay heat are calculated with SERPENT 2 using a 360-deg model of the FNSF, while the WDR is calculated and classified based on the waste disposal limits established by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission under 10 CFR 61.55 as well as by using the Fetter approach. A python-based script developed for a previous high-level waste classification and analysis study was implemented and adapted to this research to calculate the WDR by comparing nuclide concentrations to the values established in 10 CFR 61.55 to generate a waste classification for each component surveyed. As only three short-lived isotopes have limitations for classifications beyond Class A, of which only 63Ni is present in appreciable quantities, there is a limit to the amount that short-lived isotopes contribute to the most significant waste analyzed here. In most cases, a handful of long-lived isotopes can be problematic, such as 59Ni and 94Nb, for example, which are solely responsible for multiple Class C classifications. The results herein reported heavily depend on the specific materials and mass/volume fractions in the specific model used in this study, which has changed and evolved since the inception of the FNSF concept and past studies. Furthermore, the more significant contributions of this study may be the development of a modeling and simulation toolkit and a strategy to perform these calculations, so to help evaluate and optimize future fusion facilities.
