Alignment of Polarization against an Electric Field in van der Waals Ferroelectrics

Polarization in ferroelectrics can be switched in the direction of an applied electric field by dipole reorientation, enabling numerous applications and fundamental phenomena. In this study, we demonstrate that, in the van der Waals (vdW) layered ferrielectric Cu In P 2 S 6 , a unique mechanism exists where polarization aligns against the direction of the applied electric field, seemingly in violation of the fundamental properties of a dipolar solid. The mechanism is the result of the electric field driving the Cu atoms unidirectionally across the vdW gaps, which is distinctively different from dipole reorientation. The crossing of Cu atoms is the fundamental process of ionic conductivity, yet it is compatible with the existence of polarization. These phenomena are confirmed by nanoscale imaging and spectroscopy of ferroelectric capacitors, coupled with dynamic density-functional-theory simulations. The symbiotic relationship of ferroelectric and ionic phenomena enables alternative approaches to control polarization and necessitates a change in perspective on nucleation, domain-wall dynamics, and other ferroelectric and electromechanical characteristics in material systems where ionic and ferroelectric phenomena manifest.

Free-electron crystals for enhanced X-ray radiation

Abstract Bremsstrahlung—the spontaneous emission of broadband radiation from free electrons that are deflected by atomic nuclei—contributes to the majority of X-rays emitted from X-ray tubes and used in applications ranging from medical imaging to semiconductor chip inspection. Here, we show that the bremsstrahlung intensity can be enhanced significantly—by more than three orders of magnitude—through shaping the electron wavefunction to periodically overlap with atoms in crystalline materials. Furthermore, we show how to shape the bremsstrahlung X-ray emission pattern into arbitrary angular emission profiles for purposes such as unidirectionality and multi-directionality. Importantly, we find that these enhancements and shaped emission profiles cannot be attributed solely to the spatial overlap between the electron probability distribution and the atomic centers, as predicted by the paraxial and non-recoil theory for free electron light emission. Our work highlights an unprecedented regime of free electron light emission where electron waveshaping provides multi-dimensional control over practical radiation processes like bremsstrahlung. Our results pave the way towards greater versatility in table-top X-ray sources and improved fundamental understanding of quantum electron-light interactions.

Effects of drifts on scrape-off layer transport in W7-X

Abstract Drifts affect particle, momentum, and energy transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of tokamaks and stellarators, altering plasma flows and creating asymmetries between divertors. To understand how drifts affect SOL transport in the W7-X island divertor, an experiment was performed to compare plasmas with matched core parameters but opposite magnetic field directions, and therefore opposite drift transport directions. Parallel flow measurements made with coherence imaging spectroscopy are interpreted with the aid of a diagnostic forward model and a 1D simple SOL model that includes the E × B drift. In low-density plasmas ( n ‾ e < 2 × 10 19 m −3 ), the poloidal E × B drift induces a large poloidal density asymmetry within the island SOL, as measured by divertor Langmuir probes. This in turn causes the parallel flow stagnation point to shift from the position halfway between targets to the X-point in the drift direction, leading to near-unidirectional flow throughout the SOL. As density increases, the effects of the poloidal E × B drift decrease substantially, resulting in a smaller density asymmetry and the development of a counter-streaming flow pattern. For the entire density range probed in this experiment ( n ‾ e = 1.5 − 6 × 10 19 m −3 ), the experimental observations are more consistent with the effects of the poloidal E × B drift than the radial E × B drift.

10° off-axis testing of CFRP using DIC: A study on strength, strain and modulus

For the determination of the shear properties such as strength, strain and modulus of unidirectionally reinforced composites, nearly a dozen measurement techniques exist, several of which have found their way into standards. One non-standardized method for sheet materials is the 10° off-axis tensile test of unidirectional coupons. The current work focuses on the experimental investigation of tensile testing of CFRP-UD coupon specimens using the 10° off-axis test and DIC strain mapping to measure the full-field deformation response. A sensitivity analysis on the measured stresses, strains and moduli is performed by varying the aspect ratio of the specimens and the location of strain measurement. Test related uncertainties such as the loading angle and specimen preparation details are investigated and quantified with the help of these full-field DIC measurements.
