Measurements of Higgs boson production by gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion using and vector-boson using $H$ → $WW*$ → $evμv$ decays in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in proton-proton collisions is measured in the $H$ → $WW*$ → $evμv$ decay channel. The Large Hadron Collider delivered proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The total cross sections for Higgs boson production by gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion times the $H$ $\rightarrow$ $WW$* branching ratio are measured to be 12.0 ± 1.4 and ${0.75}_{- 0.16}^{+ 0.19}$ pb, respectively, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 10.4 ± 0.6 and 0.81 ± 0.02 pb. Higgs boson production is further characterized through measurements of Simplified Template Cross Sections in a total of 11 kinematic fiducial regions.

A search for decays of the Higgs boson to invisible particles in events with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$

A search for decays to invisible particles of Higgs bosons produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson, which both decay to a fully hadronic final state, has been performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb -1 . The 95% confidence level upper limit set on the branching fraction of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to invisible particles, B(H → inv), is 0.54 (0.39 expected), assuming standard model production cross sections. The results of this analysis are combined with previous B(H → inv) searches carried out at $\sqrt{s} = 7$, 8, and 13 TeV in complementary production modes. The combined upper limit at 95% confidence level on B(H → inv) is 0.15 (0.08 expected).

Vector magnetometer design study: Analysis of a triaxial fluxgate sensor design demonstrates that all MAGSAT Vector Magnetometer specifications can be met

The design of the vector magnetometer selected for analysis is capable of exceeding the required accuracy of 5 gamma per vector field component. The principal elements that assure this performance level are very low power dissipation triaxial feedback coils surrounding ring core flux-gates and temperature control of the critical components of two-loop feedback electronics. An analysis of the calibration problem points to the need for improved test facilities.

A non-Fermi model of cosmic ray acceleration - The Vector-V x Vector-B

The Fermi model of cosmic ray acceleration is incomplete and frequently internally inconsistent in situations in which particles gradient B or curvature drift in a Vector-V x Vector-B electric field while interacting with moving magnetic field irregularities. In such situations particles can gain orders of magnitude more energy per reflection than predicted by the Fermi model.

On orthogonal expansions of the space of vector functions which are square-summable over a given domain and the vector analysis operators

The Hilbert space L2(omega) of vector functions is studied. A breakdown of L2(omega) into orthogonal subspaces is discussed and the properties of the operators for projection onto these subspaces are investigated from the standpoint of preserving the differential properties of the vectors being projected. Finally, the properties of the operators are examined.

Strategies for vectorizing the sparse matrix vector product on the CRAY XMP, CRAY 2, and CYBER 205

Large, randomly sparse matrix vector products are important in a number of applications in computational chemistry, such as matrix diagonalization and the solution of simultaneous equations. Vectorization of this process is considered for the CRAY XMP, CRAY 2, and CYBER 205, using a matrix of dimension of 20,000 with from 1 percent to 6 percent nonzeros. Efficient scatter/gather capabilities add coding flexibility and yield significant improvements in performance. For the CYBER 205, it is shown that minor changes in the IO can reduce the CPU time by a factor of 50. Similar changes in the CRAY codes make a far smaller improvement.

Search for single production of vector-like quarks decaying into Wb in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for singly produced vector-like quarks Q , where Q can be either a T quark with charge +2/3 or a Y quark with charge ₋4/3, is performed in proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb ₋1 , recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The analysis targets Q → Wb decays where the W boson decays leptonically. No crtical deviation from the expected Standard Model background is observed. Upper limits are set on the QWb coupling strength and the mixing between the Standard Model sector and a singlet T quark or a Y quark from a ( B, Y ) doublet or a ( T, B, Y ) triplet, taking into account the interference effects with the Standard Model background. The upper limits set on the mixing angle are as small as |sin θ L | = 0.18 for a singlet T quark of mass 800 GeV, |sin θ R | = 0.17 for a Y quark of mass 800 GeV in a ( B, Y ) doublet model and |sin θL| = 0.16 for a Y quark of mass 800 GeV in a ( T, B, Y ) triplet model. Within a ( B, Y ) doublet model, the limits set on the mixing parameter |sin θ R | are comparable with the exclusion limits from electroweak precision observables in the mass range between about 900 GeV and 1250 GeV.

Predicting Reaction Products and Automating Reactive Trajectory Characterization in Molecular Simulations with Support Vector Machines

A machine learning-based methodology for the prediction of chemical reaction products, along with automated elucidation of mechanistic details via phase space analysis of reactive trajectories, is introduced using low-dimensional heuristic models and then applied to ab initio computer simulations of the photodissociation of acetaldehyde, an important chemical system in atmospheric chemistry. Our method is centered around training Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to identify optimal separatrices that delineate the regions of phase space that lead to different chemical reaction products. In contrast to the more common “black box” type machine learning methodologies for analyzing chemical simulation data, this SVM-based methodology allows for mechanistic insight to be gleaned from further analysis of the positioning of the phase space points used to train the SVM with respect to the separatrices. For example, a pair of phase space points that are in close proximity to each other but on opposite sides of a separatrix may be situated on opposite sides of a transition state, while phase space points occurring early in a simulation that are distant from a separatrix are likely to belong to trajectories that are highly biased toward the product state associated with the basin of attraction to which they belong. In addition to inferring mechanistic details about multiple-pathway chemical reactions, our method can also be used to increase reactive trajectory sampling efficiency in molecular simulations via rejection sampling, with trajectories leading to undesired product states being identified and terminated early in the simulation rather than being carried to completion.

The SAMEX Vector Magnetograph: A Design Study for a Space-Based Solar Vector Magnetograph

This report presents the results of a pre-phase A study performed by the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) for the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) to develop a design concept for a space-based solar vector magnetograph and hydrogen-alpha telescope. These are two of the core instruments for a proposed Air Force mission, the Solar Activities Measurement Experiments (SAMEX). This mission is designed to study the processes which give rise to activity in the solar atmosphere and to develop techniques for predicting solar activity and its effects on the terrestrial environment.

Measurement of VH, H → $b\bar{b}$ production as a function of the vector-boson transverse momentum in 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottomquark pairs and an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z , decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum. The measurements are performed in kinematic fiducial volumes defined in the ‘simplified template cross-section’ framework. The results are found using 79.8 fb ₋1 of proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. All measurements are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions, and limits are set on the parameters of an effective Lagrangian sensitive to modifications of the Higgs boson couplings to the electroweak gauge bosons.

Search for vector-boson resonances decaying to a top quark and bottom quark in the lepton plus jets final state in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for new charged massive gauge bosons, is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Data were collected in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of . This analysis searches for W' bosons in the W' → t$\bar{b}$ ecay channel in final states with an electron or muon plus jets. The search covers resonance masses between 0.5 and 5.0 TeV and considers right-handed W' bosons. No significant deviation from the Standard Model (SM) expectation is observed and upper limits are set on the W' → t$\bar{b}$ cross section times branching ratio and the W' boson effective couplings as a function of the W' boson mass. For right-handed W' bosons with coupling to the SM particles equal to the SM weak coupling constant, masses below 3.15 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. This search is also combined with a previously published ATLAS result for W' → t$\bar{b}$ in the fully hadronic final state. Using the combined searches, right-handed bosons with masses below 3.25 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.
