R.U.N. Motion VR Boots: Realistic Unimpeded Natural (RUN) Motion Boots for VR gaming in the comfort of your home

Virtual reality (VR) gaming has experienced increasingly widespread adoption in recent years largely due to the development of affordable, consumer-grade headsets equipped with high quality, miniature displays and compact sensors for motion tracking. These devices are now able to provide users with immersive experiences that far surpass what traditional video games can achieve. However, despite these technological strides, a fundamental limitation remains: VR users are unable to move freely in their physical environment without the risk of colliding with real-world obstacles and hazards. This safety concern significantly restricts the level of immersion and natural movement possible in VR gaming.

CRCNS21 Computational Models of Multisensory Integration by Upper Limb in Humanoids and Amputees

This international collaborative research project between Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) investigated how the human brain processes and integrates multiple types of sensory information, such as touch and force, with the goal of improving prosthetic limbs for amputees and advancing sensory capabilities in humanoid robots. The research advanced our understanding of how the brain responds to sensory feedback in upper-limb amputees. Through experiments in which amputees received electrical stimulation while performing phantom hand movements, we demonstrated that sensory feedback activates the cortical sensorimotor and multisensory regions, and that these regions communicate dynamically during stimulation. Experiments with intact-limb participants explored the integration of visual, haptic, and force feedback, as well as in virtual reality motor training, further showing how the brain processes multimodal sensory information. In addition, this research inspired work on examining the reliability of where amputees perceive sensations over time, which contributed to a successful doctoral fellowship for continued investigation. Our collaborators at TUM improved multimodal sensor technology combining tactile and thermal feedback for humanoid robots, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating multiple sensor types into a unified system for detecting and responding to environmental stimuli. The experimental methods and analysis techniques developed across both teams, including functional network analysis and multimodal sensor integration, provide a foundation for future research in prosthetics and robotics. This research benefits the public by generating knowledge about how amputees process restored sensory information. Advances in humanoid sensing contribute to safer human-robot interaction. The project also fostered international collaboration and cross-disciplinary training: one TUM doctoral student spent a summer at JHU working on multimodal sensor integration, while two JHU students traveled to TUM to host workshops on neuromorphic sensory encoding and sensory integration.

Modeling Co2 Flow Through Faulted/Fractured Reservoirs Using Tedfm in Corner-Point Grids

Interest in underground CO2 storage has increased significantly over the last decade, driven by growing concern about global warming and rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Given that CO2 accounts for 80% of these greenhouse gases, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is considered one of the most direct approaches to achieving the net-zero carbon target. Although CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers and depleted gas reservoirs has been studied extensively, most studies use commercial simulators that model faults/fractures by simply modifying the transmissibility in the direction perpendicular to the fault surfaces. This work shows that this simplistic approach ignores the accelerated flow in the directions parallel to the fault plane, leading to significantly higher leakage along the fault surface. To accurately model CO2 flow in faulted reservoirs, we present the first transient embedded discrete-fracture model for corner-point grids (tEDFM-CPG). By comparing the tEDFM-CPG results with high-resolution reference solutions, we show that this approach is accurate and efficient at predicting CO2 flow in faulted/fractured reservoirs. In conclusion, this work presents the use of mixed reality (MR) to efficiently observe CO2 gas migration in the interior of these corner-point grid systems.

Ultra‐Flexible Pixelated Perovskite Photodetectors Enabled by Honeycomb Polymer Grids for High‐Resolution Imaging

Abstract A nature‐inspired fabrication method based on a photolithography‐free flexible polymer grid is reported for high‐resolution pixelation of perovskite photodiode arrays with exceptional mechanical ductility and a morphology resembling that of natural compound eyes. The resulting pixelated perovskite photosensitive layer has a ≈1 µm pixel size with 2000 Pixels per inch (PPI) resolution when fully assembled as a photodetector array, delivering a detectivity of >10 13 Jones while providing cross‐talk free imaging. Using a polymer grid effectively releases stress on the perovskite platform, greatly increasing the mechanical agility of the otherwise brittle perovskite film. This novel fabrication methodology and device design offer new possibilities for applications in robotics, biomedical imaging, and virtual and augmented reality.

Physics-Informed Recurrent Neural Networks to Predict Reactor Operations of the AGN-201 Nuclear Reactor

4 page paper submitted to ANS Student conference. Summary of paper similar to the following abstract: The ability to predict how a reactor will operate, understand when anomalous conditions arise, and ensure a reactor is being operated as expected is crucial for deploying new nuclear facilities. Digital twins serve as a unique solution to recognizing reactor behavior; however, they require data to be useful. For next-generation reactors, this data may not currently be available. To explore how synthetic physics-informed reactor data can be used to predict reactor operations, a recurrent neural network was implemented for the Idaho State University AGN-201 digital twin. The goal of this work is to determine how synthetic data can be used to train a recurrent neural network model for predicting the reactor power of the AGN-201. The recurrent neural network was validated using both synthetic and real operational data. We envision this approach will help bridge the gap between the virtual and physical sides of a digital twin, where reactor physics models based on as-built data can be corrected for actual operating parameters to ensure the virtual model mirrors reality.

Augmented Reality Technologies for Radiation Safety Training: A Systematic Review of Sensor Integration and Visualization Approaches

This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review examining the application of augmented reality (AR) and sensor technologies for visualizing ionizing radiation in virtual training environments. The review methodology involved systematic identification and analysis of the relevant literature based on predetermined criteria including publication type, year of publication, application domain, and technological approach. The literature search encompassed publications from 2011 to 2021 across four major academic databases: Web of Science, Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, and Scopus. Through rigorous screening following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 23 research articles met the inclusion criteria for detailed analysis. From 404 initial database records, 360 were excluded during title/abstract screening (primarily for lacking AR components, radiation focus, or training applications) and 4 during full-text assessment (all for lacking sensor integration). The findings reveal that AR-based ionizing radiation visualization has been successfully implemented across diverse domains, including nuclear facility operations, medical procedures, CERN research activities, and educational and monitoring applications. The analysis identified multiple dimensions of impact, encompassing distinct benefits, emerging opportunities, and implementation challenges associated with AR deployment for ionizing radiation training. Each of these dimensions is comprehensively examined and documented within this review. Additionally, this study identifies critical research gaps that currently limit the full potential of AR technology in supporting ionizing radiation training programs. These gaps are systematically analyzed and discussed to establish clear directions for future research endeavors in this emerging field.

A Digital Twin Framework for Liquid-cooled Supercomputers as Demonstrated at Exascale

We present ExaDigiT, an open-source framework for developing comprehensive digital twins of liquid-cooled supercomputers. It integrates three main modules: (1) a resource allocator and power simulator, (2) a transient thermo-fluidic cooling model, and (3) an augmented reality model of the supercomputer and central energy plant. The framework enables the study of "what-if" scenarios, system optimizations, and virtual prototyping of future systems. Using Frontier as a case study, we demonstrate the framework's capabilities by replaying six months of system telemetry for systematic verification and validation. Such a comprehensive analysis of a liquid-cooled exascale supercomputer is the first of its kind. ExaDigiT elucidates complex transient cooling system dynamics, runs synthetic or real workloads, and predicts energy losses due to rectification and voltage conversion. Throughout our paper, we present lessons learned to benefit HPC practitioners developing similar digital twins. We envision the digital twin will be a key enabler for sustainable, energy-efficient supercomputing.

Sim2Real Autonomous Robotic Exploration [Poster]

Autonomous robots offer promising solutions for exploration in environments that are inaccessible or hazardous to humans. Despite this, physical training of such robots is often constrained by safety risks, high cost or limited accessibility. This project presents an end-to-end simulation to reality pipeline leveraging Nvidia Isaac Sim and Boston Dynamics' Spot to enable autonomous navigation in indoor environments. A reinforcement learning policy is first trained using Nvidia Isaac Lab to establish Spot's locomotion pattern. Virtual LiDAR sensors are then integrated to perform SLAM-based navigation using simulated odometry. Finally, the simulated navigation scheme is transferred to a physical Spot robot to inspect and record images of a real-world room by repeating the learnt trajectory. The proposed framework highlights the potential of scalable training in simulation and reliable deployment in physical environments. Future directions include dynamic trajectory generation in unseen and challenging environments and integration of environmental sensing like temperature, radiation or humidity via sensor and material simulation.
