Welding skate with computerized controls

New welding skate concept for automatic TIG welding of contoured or double-contoured parts combines lightweight welding apparatus with electrical circuitry which computes the desired torch angle and positions a torch and cold-wire guide angle manipulator.

An optical absorption cell with vapor cross flow.

Description of a water vapor cross flow system that simulates meteorological conditions and effectively curbs any disturbing effects of walls and vacuum connections in an optical absorption cell. Vapor equilibrium is established within 30 min. A 6.3 micron infrared beam traverses the pressure, temperature, and humidity controlled vapor column. The effect of these thermodynamic parameters can be examined.

Closed-circuit television welding- electrode guidance system

Closed-circuit TV camera is mounted parallel to electrode and moves along with it. Camera is scanned along seam so seam is viewed parallel with scan lines on TV monitor. Two fiber optics illuminators are attached to guidance system; they illuminate seam for TV camera.

Thermodynamic derivatives of infrared absorptance

Calculation of the concentration, pressure, and temperature dependence of the spectral absorptance of a vibrational absorption band. A smooth thermodynamic dependence was found for wavelength intervals where the average absorptance is less than 0.65. Individual rotational lines, whose parameters are often well known, were used as bases in the calculation of medium resolution spectra. Two modes of calculation were combined: well-separated rotational lines plus interaction terms, or strongly overlapping lines that were represented by a compound line of similar shape plus corrections. The 1.9- and 6.3-micron bands of H2O and the 4.3-micron band of CO2 were examined in detail and compared with experiment.

6.3-micron water-vapor-band derivatives

Measurement of the absorptance in the 6.3-micron band of a 1-m column of water vapor as a function of concentration c, pressure p, and temperature T. From the measured absorptance, the first derivatives with respect to c, p, and T, as well as the second derivatives with respect to cc, pp, cp, and pT have been obtained. These experimental results have been compared with values calculated from the line parameters of the 720 strongest rotational lines in the band.

Evaluation of a method to shield a welding electron beam from magnetic interference

It is known that electron beams are easily deflected by magnetic and electrostatic fields. Therefore, to prevent weld defects, stray electromagnetic fields are avoided in electron beam welding chambers if at all possible. The successful results of tests conducted at MSFC to evaluate a simple magnetic shield made from steel tubing are reported. Tests indicate that this shield was up to 85 percent effective in reducing magnetic effects on the electron beam of a welding machine. In addition, residual magnetic fields within the shield were so nearly uniform that the net effect on the beam alignment was negligible. It is concluded that the shield, with the addition of a tungsten liner, could be used in production welding.

Computerized adaptive control weld skate with CCTV weld guidance project

This report summarizes progress of the automatic computerized weld skate development portion of the Computerized Weld Skate with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Arc Guidance Project. The main goal of the project is to develop an automatic welding skate demonstration model equipped with CCTV weld guidance. The three main goals of the overall project are to: (1) develop a demonstration model computerized weld skate system, (2) develop a demonstration model automatic CCTV guidance system, and (3) integrate the two systems into a demonstration model of computerized weld skate with CCTV weld guidance for welding contoured parts.
