Launch Complex 34 SWMU CC054 Hot Spot Area 6 Expansion - Phase Three Implementation Work Plan

This Hot Spot (HS) Area 6 Air Sparge Expansion – Phase Three Implementation Work Plan (IWP) was prepared by Tetra Tech, Inc., for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under the Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity Contract 80KSC019D0011-80KSC019F0067, for the implementation of an Air Sparging (AS) Interim Measure (IM) at Launch Complex 34 (LC34), located at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS), Florida. LC34 has been designated as Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) CC054 under the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) operating permit. Expansion of the HS 6 IM will include installation of an additional 192 AS wells to depths of approximately 40 feet below land surface (bls) to remediate contaminated groundwater within two areas located west and northeast of the existing HS 6 AS treatment area. These areas were delineated via direct push technology investigations in September and October 2023. The expansion will target “hot spot” concentrations of cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), which are the contaminants of concern in these areas with concentrations greater than 10-times Florida Department of Environmental Protection Natural Attenuation Default Concentrations. The highest cDCE and VC concentrations detected in the proposed phase three expansion area were 58,000 micrograms per liter (μg/L) (32 to 36 feet bls) and 12,000 μg/L (23 to 27 feet bls), respectively. The objective for this expansion is to remediate contaminated groundwater within the treatment zone to support transition to long-term monitoring. This phase three expansion will add an additional 9.4 acres of treatment area to the HS 6 IM, which currently covers approximately 26.9 acres.

The International Space Life Sciences Strategic Planning Working Group

Throughout the 1980s, ESA and the space agencies of Canada, Germany, France, Japan, and the U.S. have pursued cooperative projects bilaterally and multilaterally to prepare for, and to respond to, opportunities in space life sciences research previously unapproachable in scale and sophistication. To cope effectively with likely future space research opportunities, broad, multilateral, coordinated strategic planning is required. Thus, life scientists from these agencies have allied to form the International Space Life Sciences Strategic Planning Working Group. This Group is formally organized under a charter that specifies the purpose of the Working Group as the development of an international strategic plan for the space life sciences, with periodic revisions as needed to keep the plan current. The plan will be policy-, not operations-oriented. The Working Group also may establish specific implementation teams to coordinate multilateral science policy in specific areas; such teams have been established for space station utilization, and for sharing of flight equipment.

Addendum to Air Quality: Decision Support Tools, Partner Plans, Working Groups, Committees

In the original report dated February 11, 2005, the utility of NASA Earth science data in the air quality activities of other agencies and organizations was assessed by reviewing strategic and mission plans and by conducting personal interviews with agency experts to identify and investigate agencies with the potential for partnership with NASA. The overarching agency strategic plans were reviewed and commonalities such as the desire for partnerships and technology development were noted. This addendum to the original report contains such information about the Tennessee Valley Authority and will be inserted as Section 2.6 of "Air Quality: Decision Support Tools, Partner Plans, Working Groups, Committees."

Interim Measures Work Plan: South Repeater Building: Solid Waste Management Unit 121: Hydraulic Containment and Groundwater Treatment System for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Kennedy Space Center, Florida

This document presents the design details of a granular activated carbon (GAC) hydraulic containment and groundwater treatment system Interim Measures Work Plan for the South Repeater Building site (South Repeater, Solid Waste Management Unit 121), located at John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. The interim measures (IM) treatment area includes the source area and downgradient property boundary, which have been impacted by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The objectives of the IM are to treat the source area and mitigate PFAS migration to areas outside of KSC boundaries. This document was prepared by AECOM Technical Services, Inc., for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Contract 80KSC019D0010, Task Order 80KSC021F0096. The IM consists of the installation and operation of 19 extraction wells and an associated groundwater treatment system. A total of 13 wells will be installed to a depth of 34 feet below land surface (bls) to target the upper medium-grained sand with shell layer. A total of six wells will be installed to a depth of 56 feet bls to target the lower layer of poorly graded sand with shell fragments. The system will be designed to operate each extraction well simultaneously using submersible pumps at flow rates of 5 or 10 gallons per minute (gpm), excluding one extraction well with a flow rate of 30 gpm. The extracted groundwater will be conveyed to a groundwater treatment system, where it will be treated via GAC prior to disposal via infiltration. To evaluate treatment system performance, baseline groundwater sampling will be conducted prior to treatment system startup. Performance monitoring will be completed quarterly for the first year. A total of eight performance monitoring wells will be installed to a depth of 12 feet bls, and eight performance monitoring wells will be installed to a depth of 30 feet bls. In addition to the installation of 16 performance monitoring wells, 12 existing monitoring wells will be incorporated into the performance monitoring program.

Geology of Libya Montes and the Interbasin Plains of Northern Tyrrhena Terra, Mars: First Year Results and Second Year Work Plan

The Libya Montes-Tyrrhena Terra highland-lowland transitional zone of Mars is a complex tectonic and erosional region that contains some of the oldest exposed materials on the Martian surface as well as aqueous mineral signatures that may be potential chemical artifacts of early highland formational processes. Our 1:1M scale mapping project includes the geologic materials and landforms contained within MTMs 00282, -05282, -10282, 00277, - 05277, and -10277, which cover the highland portion of the transitional zone. The map region extends from the Libya Montes southward into Tyrrhena Terra and to the northern rim of Hellas basin and includes volcanic rocks of Syrtis Major Planum and a broad lowlying plain (palus) that forms a topographic divide between Isidis and Hellas basins. The objective of this project is to describe the geologic history of regional massif and plains materials by combining geomorphological and compositional mapping observations. This abstract summarizes the technical approaches and interim scientific results of Year 1 efforts and the expected work plan for Year 2 efforts.

Geology of Libya Montes and the Interbasin Plains of Northern Tyrrhena Terra, Mars: Project Introduction and First Year Work Plan

The highland-lowland boundary (HLB) of Mars is interpreted to be a complex tectonic and erosional transition that may hold evidence for past geologic processes and environments. The HLB-abutting margin of the Libya Montes and the interbasin plains of northern Tyrrhena Terra display an exceptional view of the earliest to middle history of Mars that has yet to be fully characterized. This region contains some of the oldest exposed materials on the Martian surface as well as aqueous mineral signatures that may be potential chemical artifacts of early highland formational processes. However, a full understanding of the regions geologic and stratigraphic evolution is remarkably lacking. Some outstanding questions regarding the geologic evolution of Libya Montes and northern Tyrrhena Terra in-clude: Does combining geomorphology and composition advance our understanding of the region s evolution? Can highland materials be subdivided into stratigraphically discrete rock and sediment sequences? What do major physiographic transitions imply about the balanced tectonism, climate change, and erosion? Where is the erosional origin and what is the post-depositional history of channel and plains units? When and in what types of environments did aqueous mineral signatures arise? This abstract introduces the geologic setting, science rationale, and first year work plan of a recently-funded 4-year geologic mapping proposal (project year = calendar year). The objective is to delineate the geologic evolution of Libya Montes and northern Tyrrhena Terra at 1:1M scale using both classical geomorphological and compositional mapping techniques. The funded quadrangles are MTMs 00282, -05282, -10282, 00277, -05277, and -10277.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 4: Life sciences

The findings of the Life Sciences working group of the space shuttle payload planning activity are presented. The objectives of the Life Sciences investigations are: (1) to continue the research directed at understanding the origin of life and the search for extraterrestrial evidence of life, (2) biomedical research to understand mechanisms and provide criteria for support of manned flight, (3) technology development for life support, protective systems, and work aids for providing environmental control, and (4) to study basic biological functions at all levels or organization influenced by gravity, radiation, and circadian rhythms. Examples of candidate experimental schedules and the experimental package functional requirements are included.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 2: Atmospheric and space physics

The findings of the Atmospheric and Space Physics working group of the space shuttle mission planning activity are presented. The principal objectives defined by the group are: (1) to investigate the detailed mechanisms which control the near-space environment of the earth, (2) to perform plasma physics investigations not feasible in ground-based laboratories, and (3) to conduct investigations which are important in understanding planetary and cometary phenomena. The core instrumentation and laboratory configurations for conducting the investigations are defined.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 3: High energy astrophysics

The findings of the High Energy Astrophysics working group of the space shuttle payload planning activity are presented. The objectives to be accomplished during space shuttle missions are defined as: (1) X-ray astronomy, (2) hard X-ray and gamma ray astronomy, and (3) cosmic ray astronomy. The instruments and test equipment required to accomplish the mission are identified. Recommendations for managing the installation of the equipment and conducting the missions are included.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 5: Solar physics

The findings of the Solar Physics working group of the space shuttle payload planning activity are presented. The areas to be investigated by the solar physics experiments are: (1) the production of mechanical energy in the subphotospheric layers and its transport and dissipation in the upper layers of the atmosphere, (2) the mass flux from the subphotospheric layers into the chromosphere and corona and beyond the solar wind, (3) solar activity and its relationship to magnetic fields, and (4) the production of solar flares. The approach to be followed in conducting the experiments and the equipment required are defined.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 6: Communications and navigation

The findings of the Communications and Navigation working group of the space shuttle payload planning activity are presented. The basic goals to be accomplished are to increase the use of space systems and to develop new space capabilities for providing communication and navigation services to the user community in the 1980 time period. Specific experiments to be conducted for improving space communication and navigation capabilities are defined. The characteristics of the experimental equipment required to accomplish the mission are discussed.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 7: Earth observations

The findings of the Earth Observations working group of the space shuttle payload planning activity are presented. The objectives of the Earth Observation experiments are: (1) establishment of quantitative relationships between observable parameters and geophysical variables, (2) development, test, calibration, and evaluation of eventual flight instruments in experimental space flight missions, (3) demonstration of the operational utility of specific observation concepts or techniques as information inputs needed for taking actions, and (4) deployment of prototype and follow-on operational Earth Observation systems. The basic payload capability, mission duration, launch sites, inclinations, and payload limitations are defined.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups. Volume 8: Earth and ocean physics

The findings and recommendations of the Earth and Ocean Physics working group of the space shuttle payload planning activity are presented. The requirements for the space shuttle mission are defined as: (1) precision measurement for earth and ocean physics experiments, (2) development and demonstration of new and improved sensors and analytical techniques, (3) acquisition of surface truth data for evaluation of new measurement techniques, (4) conduct of critical experiments to validate geophysical phenomena and instrumental results, and (5) development and validation of analytical/experimental models for global ocean dynamics and solid earth dynamics/earthquake prediction. Tables of data are presented to show the flight schedule estimated costs, and the mission model.

The space shuttle payload planning working groups: Executive summaries

The findings of a space shuttle payload planning group session are presented. The purpose of the workshop is: (1) to provide guidance for the design and development of the space shuttle and the spacelab and (2) to plan a space science and applications program for the 1980 time period. Individual groups were organized to cover the various space sciences, applications, technologies, and life sciences. Summaries of the reports submitted by the working groups are provided.
