Olefin oligomerization by main group Ga 3+ and Zn 2+ single site catalysts on SiO 2

In heterogeneous catalysis, olefin oligomerization is typically performed on immobilized transition metal ions, such as Ni 2+ and Cr 3+ . Here we report that silica-supported, single site catalysts containing immobilized, main group Zn 2+ and Ga 3+ ion sites catalyze ethylene and propylene oligomerization to an equilibrium distribution of linear olefins with rates similar to that of Ni 2+ . The molecular weight distribution of products formed on Zn 2+ is similar to Ni 2+ , while Ga 3+ forms higher molecular weight olefins. In situ spectroscopic and computational studies suggest that oligomerization unexpectedly occurs by the Cossee-Arlman mechanism via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and β-hydride elimination elementary steps. Initiation of the catalytic cycle is proposed to occur by heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene, which occurs at about 250 °C where oligomerization is catalytically relevant. This work illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for development of new oligomerization processes.

Tetrahedral Zn 2+ doping LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 improves discharge capacity retention by altering surface Ni valence during cycling and preventing oxygen evolution

5 mol-% Zn 2+ was added to the co-precipitation synthesis of LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC622) to understand Zn's effect on the structural and electronic properties of NMC622. Zn is determined to successfully dope into the NMC crystal lattice as there is an increase in d-spacing along the [003], [104], and [110] directions and an increase in molar volume (100.75 cm 3 mol -1 for NMC622 and 101.00 cm 3 mol -1 for Zn-NMC). Through XPS, Zn is determined to dope on the tetrahedral 6c Wyckoff site in the NMC structure and TEM-EDS reveals that despite a slight ZnO impurity phase, 1.4 mol-% Zn successfully dopes into the crystal structure. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry shows a suppressed anodic wave associated with oxygen evolution and EIS demonstrates that Zn-doped NMC decreases charge transfer resistance and increases Li diffusion by an order of magnitude. After the formation cycles, NMC has a higher 1 C accessible capacity, 141 mAh/g, over Zn-NMC (132 mAh/g), but after long term cycling Zn-NMC has a higher accessible capacity (117 mAh/g compared to 96 mAh/g for NMC) and increases discharge capacity retention by 18% leading to longer cycle life.

Localization of Zn 2+ ions affects the structural folding and mechanics of Nereis virens Nvjp-1

Several biological organisms utilize metal-coordination bonds to produce remarkable materials, such as the jaw of the marine worm Nereis virens, where metal-coordination bonds yield remarkable hardness without mineralization. Though the structure of a major component of the jaw, the Nvjp-1 protein, has recently been resolved, a detailed nanostructural understanding of the role of metal ions on the structural and mechanical properties of the protein is missing, especially with respect to the localization of metal ions. In this work, atomistic replica exchange molecular dynamics with explicit water and Zn 2+ ions and steered molecular dynamics simulations were used to explore how the initial localization of the Zn 2+ ions impacts the structural folding and mechanical properties of Nvjp-1. We found that the initial distribution of metal ions for Nvjp-1, and likely for other proteins with high amounts of metal-coordination, has important effects on the resulting structure, with larger metal ion quantity resulting in a more compact structure. These structural compactness trends, however, are independent from the mechanical tensile strength of the protein, which increases with greater hydrogen bond content and uniform distribution of metal ions. Our results indicate that different physical principles underlie the structure or mechanics of Nvjp-1, with broader implications in the development optimized hardened bioinspired materials and the modeling of proteins with significant metal ion content.

Fluorinated Interphase Enables Reversible Zn 2+ Storage in Aqueous ZnSO 4 Electrolytes

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) using ZnSO 4 aqueous electrolytes complement Li-ion batteries and offer high safety, low cost, and scalability. However, an inferior cycle life, attributed to the generation of basic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) on the cathode during cycling, hampers the development of AZIBs. Although Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 (Zn(OTf) 2 ) electrolytes demonstrate exceptional performance, their higher cost in comparison to ZnSO 4 offsets their electrochemical stability benefits. Toward this end, we propose a fluorinated interphase strategy to achieve a stable battery with ZnSO 4 electrolytes by in situ pre-constructing the cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) of ZnOTf-LDH on the cathode surface. Unlike ZnSO 4 - LDH, which obstructs the diffusion channel of zinc ions, ZnOTf-LDH facilitates the desolvation of zinc ions, thereby enhancing the cycling stability (over 50 cycles at a low current density of 200 mA g -1 ). Further, this work offers valuable insights into the degradation mechanism of AZIBs and provides an effective approach for developing stable and low-cost AZIBs.

Ground electronic state description of thiourea coordination in homoleptic Zn 2+ , Ni 2+ and Co 2+ complexes using sulfur K -edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was employed to experimentally characterize the coordinative bond between the thiourea (TU) or thiocarbamide ligand and transition metal (TM) ions Zn 2+ , Co 2+ and Ni 2+ in distorted tetrahedral and octahedral homoleptic coordination environments. Comparisons of XAS spectra of the free TU ligand and [Zn(TU) 4 ] 2+ , [Co(TU) 4 ] 2+ and [Ni(TU) 6 ] 2+ complexes clearly identify spectral features unique to TM 2+ –S(TU) bonding. Quantitative analysis of pre-edge intensities describes the covalency of Ni 2+ —S(TU) and Co 2+ —S(TU) bonding to be at most 21% and 9% as expressed by the S 3p contributions per TM 3d electron hole. Using relevant Ni 2+ complexes with dithiocarbamate and thioether ligands, we evaluated the empirical S 1s → 3p transition dipole integrals developed for S-donor ligands and their dependence on heteroatom substitutions. With the aid of density functional theory-based ground electronic state calculations, we found evidence for the need of using a transition dipole that is dependent on the presence of conjugated heteroatom (N) substitution in these S-donor ligands.

Affinity for OH – Produces Four-Coordinated Zn 2+ Impurities in Hydrated Amorphous Calcium Carbonate

Using ab initio based molecular dynamics and electronic structure calculations, we show that Zn impurities in hydrated amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) have a much lower coordination number than other divalent impurities due to covalent interactions between the 3d Zn shell and the oxygen atoms of the carbonate and water groups. Further, the local structure around Zn in ACC, including the predicted low coordination number, is confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy of synthetic Zn-bearing ACC. The strong Zn–O chemical interaction leads to substantial water dissociation and slightly disrupts the hydrogen bonding network. Implications of Zn 2+ incorporation for ACC stability are discussed.

Beyond single tetrahedron physics of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11

Recently, a new class of quantum magnets, the so-called breathing pyrochlore spin systems, have attracted much attention due to their potential to host exotic emergent phenomena. Here, we present magnetometry, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, muon-spin relaxation, and polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 . We interpret these results using a simplified toy model and provide insight into the low-energy physics of this system beyond the single tetrahedron physics proposed previously.

One-electron redox kinetics of aqueous transition metal couples Zn 2+/+ , Co 2+/+ , and Ni 2+/+ using pulse radiolysis

The one-electron redox potentials for aqueous metal couples Co 2+/+ and Ni 2+/+ have been investigated by using pulse radiolysis using their reactions with a series of reference compounds to establish the most positive upper limits of E 0 . Experiments with Zn + were also carried out to confirm the characteristic shape of the expected reduction kinetics. Both formate ions and t-BuOH were employed to scavenge ˙OH radicals and ˙H atoms. Kinetics and fitted first and second order reaction rates have been reported for reactions with methyl viologen, fluorescein, Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ , Co(en) 3 2+ , Co(sepulcrate) 3+ , Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , Cr(bpy)33+, and Ni(Me 6 [14]4,11-dieneN4) 2+ . Previous work demonstrated that both Co 2+ and Ni 2+ can be reduced by CO 2 ˙- radicals, giving a negative E 0 limit of -1.9 V vs. SHE. A definite reaction of Ni + with fluorescein di-anions provides a new upper limit of the Ni 2+/+ couple as -0.906 V vs. SHE. The reaction of Co + with Ru(bpy) 3 2+ has been confirmed, giving E 0 = -1.3 V vs. SHE as a rigorous upper limit of the Co 2+/+ couple. In the case of Co 2+/+ , kinetics were complicated by a self-catalyzed metal clustering phenomenon. Initiation rate constants of this process have also been reported.

On the New Oxyarsenides Eu 5 Zn 2 As 5 O and Eu 5 Cd 2 As 5 O

The new quaternary phases Eu5Zn2As5O and Eu5Cd2As5O have been synthesized by metal flux reactions and their structures have been established through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both compounds crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63, Z = 4; Pearson symbol oC52), with unit cell parameters a = 4.3457(11) Å, b = 20.897(5) Å, c = 13.571(3) Å; and a = 4.4597(9) Å, b = 21.112(4) Å, c = 13.848(3) Å, for Eu5Zn2As5O and Eu5Cd2As5O, respectively. The crystal structures include one-dimensional double-strands of corner-shared MAs4 tetrahedra (M = Zn, Cd) and As–As bonds that connect the tetrahedra to form pentagonal channels. Four of the five Eu atoms fill the space between the pentagonal channels and one Eu atom is contained within the channels. An isolated oxide anion O2– is located in a tetrahedral hole formed by four Eu cations. Applying the valence rules and the Zintl concept to rationalize the chemical bonding in Eu5M2As5O (M = Zn, Cd) reveals that the valence electrons can be counted as follows: 5 × [Eu2+] + 2 × [M2+] + 3 × [As3–] + 2 × [As2–] + O2–, which suggests an electron-deficient configuration. The presumed h+ hole is confirmed by electronic band structure calculations, where a fully optimized bonding will be attained if an additional valence electron is added to move the Fermi level up to a narrow band gap (Eu5Zn2As5O) or pseudo-gap (Eu5Cd2As5O). In order to achieve such a formal charge balance, and hence, narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in Eu5M2As5O (M = Zn, Cd), europium is theorized to be in a mixed-valent Eu2+/ Eu3+ state.

Steric control of mesocate and helicate formation: Bulky pyrrol-2-yl Schiff base complexes of Zn 2+

Regioisomerism about a phenyl spacer alters the number of nuclei which participate in self-assembly with pyrrole/schiff base ditopic ligands. The bulky benzyl ester substituents favor formation of di- and tetranuclear (but not trinuclear) complexes. Here the resulting unusual tetranuclear zinc molecular square is characterized and helicate versus mesocate formation is discussed.

Programmable hydrogels by combining persistent and transient dynamic bonds

Out-of-equilibrium chemistry is currently being applied to polymer systems to mimic the autonomous behavior of biological materials. In this study, hydrogels with self-healing properties were developed that combine persistent crosslinks from dynamic metal-ligand coordination with transient crosslinks from dynamic anhydride bonds. Polymers containing terpyridine ligands and carboxylic acid groups were synthesized and crosslinked with divalent metal ions (Fe 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cu 2+ ). The coordination bonds from terpyridine–metal coordination impart persistent stability, while transient anhydrides formed on treatment with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) temporarily increase crosslink density. Distinct behaviors are observed depending on the choice of metal, with Ni 2+ forming robust, stable networks; Zn 2+ creating moderately dynamic gels; and Cu 2+ yielding highly dynamic, soft materials. Treatment with EDC increased storage moduli significantly, with transient effects lasting up to 280 min depending on the metal ion. Self-healing experiments demonstrated independent contributions from metal coordination and transient anhydrides, enabling recovery of stress and strain under varying conditions. Additionally, complex and reversible 2D stiffness patterns were generated by spatially controlled EDC treatment of Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ hydrogel films, demonstrating programmability and reusability.

Electroreduction-Driven Formation and Connectivity of Polyoxometalate Coordination Networks

We present the synthesis of metal oxide coordination networks based on Preyssler-type polyoxoanions ([NaP 5 W 30 O 110 ] 14– and [NaP 5 MoW 29 O 110 ] 14– ) bridged with metal–aquo complexes ([M(H 2 O) n ] m+ , M m+ = Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ , Y 3+ ), induced by electrochemical reduction. Networks bridged with first-row transition metals are isostructural with a previously reported Co-bridged structure, while the Y 3+ -bridged structure is new. All networks feature an uncommon binding motif of the metal cation to the oxygen atoms at cap positions, which we hypothesize is due to increased electron density at the cap upon reduction. Oxidation of a Zn 2+ -bridged network resulted in a new structure in which Zn 2+ –O cap bonds are lost, indicating the importance of reduction in the connectivity of these polyoxometalate-based coordination networks.

Structure–Activity Relationships for Ethanol Dehydrogenation to Acetaldehyde by Silica-Supported Zinc Oxide Catalysts

Silica-supported ZnO efficiently catalyzes the nonoxidative dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde, which is relevant for production of 1,3-butadiene from bioethanol. Characterization with in situ spectroscopies under dehydrated conditions (high sensitivity-low energy ion scattering (HS-LEIS), diffuse reflectance (DR) UV–vis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS), inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and UV Raman), and ammonia adsorption probed by temperature-programmed desorption followed by DRIFTS and mass spectrometry (DRIFTS-MS NH 3 -TPD), and DFT calculations revealed that the supported ZnO x phase was present as isolated surface ZnO x sites on SiO 2 , with the vast majority coordinated by two siloxane bonds and one silicon atom with two nonbridging oxygens ((≡SiO) 2 Zn 2+ O 2 Si=), anchored at 4-, 5-, and 6-membered siloxane rings. A minor fraction of surface ZnO x sites possessed Lewis acidity, and even fewer sites possessed a Bro̷nsted acidic Zn(OH) + Si moiety. Ethanol temperature-programmed surface reaction-mass spectrometry (TPSR-MS) with various oxidative or ethanol reaction pretreatments indicated that only sites with Lewis and Bro̷nsted acidic character (Zn(OH) + Si) were active for ethanol dehydrogenation, while the majority surface (≡SiO) 2 Zn 2+ O 2 Si= sites were inactive. Greater heterogeneity among all surface ZnO x sites, as assessed by in situ DR UV–vis spectroscopy, was associated with a greater number of ZnO x sites that were active for ethanol dehydrogenation as well as lower enthalpic barriers for acetaldehyde production among the most active surface ZnO x sites. Turnover frequencies and the apparent activation energy for ethanol dehydrogenation were determined from steady-state kinetics. Together, these findings suggested that anchoring inactive surface (≡SiO) 2 Zn 2+ O 2 Si= sites on the silica support caused a greater number of active surface ZnO x sites to adopt a more strained configuration, promoting ethanol dehydrogenation catalysis. Pretreatments and catalysts that promoted desorption of ethanol during TPSR, taken as a marker of surface dehydroxylation, were associated with an increased number of the most active surface (Zn(OH) + Si) sites. Such findings suggested that inactive surface ZnO x sites were activated for ethanol dehydrogenation by dehydroxylation of the support and/or decreased coordination to hemilabile siloxane ligands.

Exchange-Mediated Transport in Battery Electrolytes: Ultrafast or Ultraslow?

Understanding the mechanisms of charge transport in batteries is important for the rational design of new electrolyte formulations. Persistent questions about ion transport mechanisms in battery electrolytes are often framed in terms of vehicular diffusion by persistent ion–solvent complexes versus structural diffusion through the breaking and reformation of ion–solvent contacts, i.e., solvent exchange events. Ultrafast two-dimensional (2D) IR spectroscopy can probe exchange processes directly via the evolution of the cross-peaks on picosecond time scales. However, vibrational energy transfer in the absence of solvent exchange gives rise to the same spectral signatures, hiding the desired processes. Here we employ 2D IR on solvent resonances of a mixture of acetonitrile isotopologues to differentiate chemical exchange and energy-transfer dynamics in a comprehensive series of Li + , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Ba 2+ bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide electrolytes from the dilute to the superconcentrated regime. No exchange phenomena occur within at least 100 ps, regardless of the ion identity, salt concentration, and presence of water. All of the observed spectral dynamics originate from the intermolecular energy transfer. These results place the lower experimental boundary on the ion–solvent residence times to several hundred picoseconds, much slower than previously suggested. With the help of MD simulations and conductivity measurements on the Li + and Zn 2+ systems, we discuss these results as a continuum of vehicular and structural modalities that vary with concentration and emphasize the importance of collective electrolyte motions to ion transport. These results hold broadly applicable to many battery-relevant ions and solvents.

Fe-N 4 O-C Nanoplates Covalently Bonding on Graphene for Efficient CO 2 Electroreduction and Zn-CO 2 Batteries

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction into value-added products holds great promise in moving toward carbon neutrality but remains a grand challenge due to lack of efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, the nucleophilic substitution reaction is elaborately harnessed to synthesize carbon nanoplates with a Fe-N 4 O configuration anchored onto graphene substrate (Fe-N 4 O-C/Gr) through covalent linkages. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the unique configuration of Fe-N 4 O with one oxygen (O) atom in the axial direction not only suppresses the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, but also facilitates the desorption of *CO intermediate compared with the commonly planar single-atomic Fe sites. The Fe-N 4 O-C/Gr shows excellent performance in the electroreduction of CO 2 into carbon monoxide (CO) with an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 98.3% at -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high turnover frequency of 3511 h -1 . Furthermore, as a cathode catalyst in an aqueous zinc (Zn)-CO 2 battery, the Fe-N 4 O-C/Gr achieves a high CO Faradaic efficiency (≈91%) at a discharge current density of 3 mA cm -2 and long-term stability over 74 h. Here this work opens up a new route to simultaneously modulate the geometric and electronic structure of single-atomic catalysts toward efficient CO 2 conversion.
