Maximizing the grafting of zwitterions onto the surface of ultrafiltration membranes to improve antifouling properties

Superhydrophilic zwitterions have been extensively exploited for surface modification to improve antifouling properties. However, it remains challenging to form layers of <20 nm with high zwitterion content on the surfaces with different degrees of hydrophilicity. We demonstrate that amine-functionalized sulfobetaine (SBAm) can be co-deposited with dopamine on ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, leading to a thickness of 10 nm to 50 nm and an SBAm content of up to 31 mass% in the coating layers. The covalently grafted SBAm is stable underwater and improves the antifouling properties, as evidenced by the lower trans-membrane pressure required to retain targeted water fluxes than that required for the pristine membranes. Finally, the SBAm is also more effective than conventionally used sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) for the zwitterion grafting on the surface to improve antifouling properties

Conjugated Zwitterionic Oligomers as Ligands on Perovskite Nanocrystals: Hybrid Structures with Tunable Interparticle Spacing

Conventional ligands for CsPbBr 3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), composed of polar, coordinating head groups (e.g., ammonium or zwitterionic) and aliphatic tails, are instrumental in stabilizing the NCs against sintering and aggregation. Nonetheless, the aliphatic (insulating) nature of these ligands represents drawbacks with respect to objectives in optoelectronics, and yet removing these ligands typically leads to a loss of colloidal stability. Here, in this paper, we describe the preparation of CsPbBr 3 NCs in the presence of discrete conjugated oligomers that were prepared by an iterative synthetic approach and capped at their chain ends with sulfobetaine zwitterions for perovskite coordination. Notably, these zwitterionic oligofluorenes are compatible with the hot injection and ligand exchange conditions used to prepare CsPbBr 3 NCs, yielding stable NC dispersions with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY, >90%) and spectral features representative of both the perovskite core and conjugated ligand shell. Controlling the chain length of these capping ligands effectively regulated inter-NC spacing and packing geometry when cast into solid films, with evidence derived from both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements.

Ion Specificity Influences on the Structure of Zwitterionic Brushes

Zwitterionic brushes have a wide range of applications, including use as lubricating surfaces and antifouling membranes. In this study, densely end-tethered poly(cysteine methacrylate) (PCysMA) brushes were synthesized using surfaceinitiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET-ATRP). The structure of the PCysMA brushes was investigated using ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity (XRR), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results of these characterization techniques were used to study the effect of SO 4 2– , Cl – , NO 3 – , Br – , and SCN – anions, divalent Ca 2+ and Ba 2+ cations, and trivalent Y 3+ cations on the structure of the PCysMA brushes. The results showed that the PCysMA brushes in solution exhibit an “antipolyelectrolyte” effect to a certain degree, which inversely follows the Hofmeister series of anions. The introduction of divalent cations Ca 2+ and Ba 2+ had a modest impact on the dimensions of the PCysMA brushes, indicating that chelating interactions between the cations and zwitterion units work against the “antipolyelectrolyte” effect. The complexation was even stronger in the presence of trivalent Y 3+ cations, which caused the PCysMA brushes to shrink. These findings highlight the importance of ion specificity to the structure of zwitterionic brushes in aqueous solutions.

Quadrupolar NMR crystallography guided crystal structure prediction (QNMRX-CSP) of zwitterionic organic HCl salts

In this work, we benchmark quadrupolar NMR crystallography guided crystal structure prediction (QNMRX-CSP) for determining the crystal structures of two zwitterionic organic HCl salts, L-ornithine HCl ( Orn ) and L-histidine HCl·H 2 O ( Hist ). These salts present an interesting challenge for QNMRX-CSP, as gas-phase geometry optimizations used to generate starting structures for the organic zwitterionic fragments fail to capture their correct solid-state geometries. To overcome this limitation, geometry optimizations using the COSMO water-solvation model are employed to generate initial structural models. Using this approach, QNMRX-CSP yields structural models of the two zwitterionic organic HCl salts that closely match experimentally determined crystal structures. In addition, the application of QNMRX-CSP to Hist represents a further step toward the de novo structural determination of solvated organic HCl salts, as Hist is the first benchmark system of this type to include a water molecule as a component of its crystal structure. This work is significant for its potential application to the structural determination of active pharmaceutical ingredients, which often feature complex organic components and solvated solid forms.

Molecular understanding of ion transport in a zwitterionic electrolyte

Zwitterions (ZIs) are unique molecules that carry both positive and negative charges, resulting in overall charge neutrality and high dielectric constants. These distinctive properties have enabled broad applications of zwitterionic functionality, including the emerging use of ZIs in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. As a contribution to this developing field, we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the ion transport mechanisms in amorphous mixtures of a zwitterionic liquid containing a range of LiTFSI salt concentrations. Furthermore, the local coordination environment around the Li + ions plays a strong role in governing ionic conductivity, as well as the enhancement of Li + transport numbers with increasing salt concentration. Addition of small amounts of water leads to increased conductivity and ion mobilities due to the water coordinating with the Li + ions, which reduces direct interactions with larger charged species.

Free flow cell electrophoresis using zwitterionic buffer

Studies of a zwitterionic buffer formulated for cell electrophoresis were done using the McDonnell-Douglas Continuous Flow Electrophoresis System. Standard buffers were analyzed for their stability in the electrical field and the results showed that both buffers tested were inherently unstable. Further, titration studies showed that the standards buffers buffered poorly at the pH employed for electrophoresis. The zwitterionic buffer buffered well at its nominal pH and was shown to be stable in the electrical field. Comparative studies of the buffer with standard cell separation buffers using formalin fixed rabbit and goose red blood cells showed that the zwitterionic buffer gave better resolution of the fixed cells. Studies with viable hybridoma cells showed that buffer Q supported cell viability equal to Hank's Balanced Salt Solution and that hybridoma cells in different stages of the growth cycle demonstrated reproducible differences in electrophoretic mobility.

Chemical-Free Lithium Separation from High-Salinity Brines Using Model-Informed and Machine Learning-Optimized Multi-Column Zwitterionic Chromatography

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technologies often struggle to produce high-purity lithium salts from high-salinity brines, as current approaches require chemical-based elution, regeneration, and precipitation steps, resulting in significant environmental footprints. A novel salt fractionation approach using carboxybetaine resin, known as zwitterionic chromatography (ZIC), has demonstrated that lithium ions can be separated from divalent cations under high-salinity conditions using only water as eluent, with no regeneration required. To enable continuous and scalable deployment of this approach, we developed a chemical-free Multi-column Zwitterionic Chromatography (MZC) process and its theoretical and process models. To predict and optimize this nontraditional separation system, we introduced a novel anti-Langmuir isotherm, and the isotherm parameters were estimated through a machine learning-driven optimization based on artificial neural network ensembles with numerical feasibility assessment. Using machine learning-driven optimization, the MZC process achieved 98.0% lithium recovery, 99.5 % Li/(Li + Mg + Ca) purity, a 31.3% productivity increase, and a 33% reduction in water use compared to batch operation. The proposed MZC process enables lithium separation at $0.6-1.2 kg-1 Li, with costs dominated by resin manufacturing, while offering lower separation costs and carbon footprint compared with conventional carbonation. Overall, these findings position the MZC process as an effective polishing step within scalable and sustainable lithium production pipelines.

A Novel Zwitterionic Chromatography Approach to Separate Lithium from Unconventional Resources

Lithium (Li) is a key element for clean energy technologies, and, accordingly, the global lithium demand has been increasing rapidly. Therefore, to meet the Li demand and maintain supply chain stability, it is critical to develop efficient lithium extraction technologies that allow exploitation of unconventional lithium resources, such as geothermal brines and inland brine streams. However, the recovery of Li from these resources is challenging due to low Li concentration, low ratios of Li/Na, Li/Mg, or Li/Ca, and complex feed compositions. To address this, we introduced a new Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) process using Zwitterionic Chromatography (ZIC) to separate Li from other salts. Since salts are partitioned on ZIC under water elution, no reagent chemicals are needed, and the Li separation is not limited by the adsorption capacity. We prepared 13 different zwitterionic (ZI) resins to investigate the salt retention on various ZI groups and then screened out promising sorbents for efficient Li separation. It was found that salt retention was synergistically affected by the pore size and ZI configurations. Using carboxybetaine (QAC3CA) sorbents, multicomponent separations showed that Li can be partitioned from divalent salts or Na with selectivities of 1.8 or 1.9, respectively. Although the selectivity is relatively low, in real brine tests, Li was separated from Ca and Mg with 79.2 % yield, showing the potential for a continuous process to achieve high productivity and high yield. Simulation studies suggest the salt elution mechanism is related to the hydration reaction energy and the effective hydrated radius of cations.

Mechanistic Studies of Ligand Substitution, Linkage Isomerism, and Insertion Reactions in Electron Rich Pd(II) Complexes of a Zwitterionic Diimine Ligand

We have prepared cationic palladium complexes possessing a new zwitterionic ligand bis-N,N’–1-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridyl) oxalamide [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(L)] + [BArF] - , (BArF=3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 C 6 H 3 , L=NCMe, CO). The structure of [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(CO)] + [BArF] - was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) indi-cates this N ^ N zwitterionic ligand is more electron-donating relative to bidentate diimine ligands. Low temperature NMR analysis shows the existence of linkage isomers with the N ^ N isomer the most stable. Structures were assigned using NMR and DFT analysis. Barriers to interconversion of isomers are ΔG ‡ = 10-12 kcal/mol. Kinetics of acetoni-trile displacement from [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(NCCH 3 )] + [BArF] - by CD 3 CN, ethylene and t Bu 3 P were measured and mechanisms of exchange determined. The ethylene complex, [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(C 2 H 4 )] + was generated at -45 °C, and the barrier of migrato-ry insertion determined at 0 °C (ΔG ‡ = 23.4 kcal/mol) and compared to related diimine complexes. The methyl carbonyl complex undergoes migratory insertion in the presence of CO at -70 to -55 °C (ΔG ‡ = ca. 15.7 kcal/mol) to yield the acyl carbonyl complex. Furthermore, the neutral bis-trimethylsilylmethyl complex [(N ^ N)Pd(CH 2 SiMe 3 ) 2 was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. It displays dynamic behavior at very low temperatures in the NMR spectrum (-90 °C, ΔG ‡ =7.9 kcal/mol) which, supported by DFT analysis, is ascribed to rotation of the bulky -CH 2 SiMe 3 groups.

Simple Bioparticle Filtration Device Based on an Ultralow-Fouling Zwitterionic Polyurethane Membrane for Rapid Large-Volume Separation of Plasma and Viruses from Whole Blood

Plasma separation from whole blood is oftent required as an essential first step when performing blood tests with a viral assay. However, developing a point-of-care plasma extraction device with a large output and high virus recovery remains a significant obstacle to the success of on-site viral load tests. Here, we report a portable, easy-to-use, cost-efficient, membrane-filtration-based plasma separation device that enables rapid large-volume plasma extraction from whole blood, designed for point-of-care virus assays. The plasma separation is realized by a low-fouling zwitterionic polyurethane-modified cellulose acetate (PCBU-CA) membrane. The zwitterionic coating on the cellulose acetate membrane can decrease surface protein adsorption by 60% and increase plasma permeation by 46% compared with a pristine membrane. The PCBU-CA membrane, with its ultralow-fouling properties, enables rapid plasma separation. The device can yield a total of 1.33 mL plasma from 10 mL whole blood in 10 min. The extracted plasma is cell-free and exhibits a low hemoglobin level. In addition, our device demonstrated a 57.8% T7 phage recovery in the separated plasma. The results of real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed that the nucleic acid amplification curve of the plasma extracted by our device is comparable to that obtained by centrifugation. With its high plasma yield and good phage recovery, our plasma separation device provides an excellent replacement for traditional plasma separation protocols for point-of-care virus assays and a broad spectrum of clinical tests.

Comparing Zwitterionic and PEG Exteriors of Polyelectrolyte Complex Micelles

A series of model polyelectrolyte complex micelles (PCMs) was prepared to investigate the consequences of neutral and zwitterionic chemistries and distinct charged cores on the size and stability of nanocarriers. Using aqueous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, we synthesized a well-defined diblock polyelectrolyte system, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine methacrylate)-block-poly((vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium) (PMPC-PVBTMA), at various neutral and charged block lengths to compare directly against PCM structure–property relationships centered on poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly((vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium) (PEG-PVBTMA) and poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(l-lysine) (PEG-PLK). After complexation with a common polyanion, poly(sodium acrylate), the resulting PCMs were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We observed uniform assemblies of spherical micelles with a diameter ~1.5–2× larger when PMPC-PVBTMA was used compared to PEG-PLK and PEG-PVBTMA via SAXS and DLS. In addition, PEG-PLK PCMs proved most resistant to dissolution by both monovalent and divalent salt, followed by PEG-PVBTMA then PMPC-PVBTMA. All micelle systems were serum stable in 100% fetal bovine serum over the course of 8 h by time-resolved DLS, demonstrating minimal interactions with serum proteins and potential as in vivo drug delivery vehicles. This thorough study of the synthesis, assembly, and characterization of zwitterionic polymers in PCMs advances the design space for charge-driven micelle assemblies.

Synthesis of Zwitterionic CsPbBr 3 Nanocrystals with Controlled Anisotropy using Surface‐Selective Ligand Pairs

Abstract Mechanistic studies of the morphology of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP‐NCs) are hampered by a lack of generalizable suitable synthetic strategies and ligand systems. Here, the synthesis of zwitterionic CsPbBr 3 NCs is presented with controlled anisotropy using a proposed “surface‐selective ligand pairs” strategy. Such a strategy provides a platform to systematically study the binding affinity of capping ligand pairs and the resulting LHP morphologies. By using zwitterionic ligands (ZwL) with varying structures, majority ZwL‐capped LHP NCs with controlled morphology are obtained, including anisotropic nanoplatelets and nanorods, for the first time. Combining experiments with density functional theory calculations, factors that govern the ligand binding on the different surface facets of LHP‐NCs are revealed, including the steric bulkiness of the ligand, the number of binding sites, and the charge distance between binding moieties. This study provides guidance for the further exploration of anisotropic LHP‐NCs.

A Solid State Zwitterionic Plastic Crystal With High Static Dielectric Constant

Solid materials with a high dielectric constant have a wide range of applications in the energy storage field. In this research, an imidazolium-based zwitterion is designed, synthesized, and confirmed to have a plastic crystal phase based on the following experimental and computational evidence: (i) the presence of long-range order with weak intermolecular forces and competing attractive-repulsive interactions along different crystallographic directions; (ii) the observation of more than one endotherm on heating including a solid-solid phase transition at T s-s = −26 °C and melting of the plastic crystal at T m = 72°C; (iii) a low entropy of fusion at melting (2.1 JK −1 mol −1 ); (iv) a strongly anisotropic morphology; (v) relatively fast dynamics originating from short-range degrees of freedom. Furthermore, it exhibits a very high dielectric constant in the plastic crystal solid state (147 at −10°C and 103 at 70°C) due to the rotational degrees of freedom of plastic crystals that arise from weak net intermolecular interactions of zwitterions due to only having two carbons between the anion and cation. This material conveniently remains in the plastic crystal phase within 50 K of ambient temperature. This discovery opens new opportunities in the search for solid-state high dielectric constant materials.

Novel Zwitterionic Polyurethane-in-Salt Electrolytes with High Ion Conductivity, Elasticity, and Adhesion for High-Performance Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

This study presents a novel polymer-in-salt (PIS) zwitterionic polyurethane-based solid polymer electrolyte (zPU-SPE) that offers high ionic conductivity, strong interaction with electrodes, and excellent mechanical and electrochemical stabilities, making it promising for high-performance all solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). The zPU-SPE exhibits remarkable lithium-ion (Li+) conductivity (3.7 × 10⁻⁴ S cm−1 at 25 °C), enabled by exceptionally high salt loading of up to 90 wt.% (12.6 molar ratio of Li salt to polymer unit) without phase separation. It addresses the limitations of conventional SPEs by combining high ionic conductivity with a Li+ transference number of 0.44, achieved through the incorporation of zwitterionic groups that enhance ion dissociation and transport. The high surface energy (338.4 J m−2) and elasticity ensure excellent adhesion to Li anodes, reducing interfacial resistance and ensuring uniform Li+ flux. When tested in Li||zPU||LiFePO₄ and Li||zPU||S/C cells, the zPU-SPE demonstrated remarkable cycling stability, retaining 76% capacity after 2000 cycles with the LiFePO4 cathode, and achieving 84% capacity retention after 300 cycles with the S/C cathode. Molecular simulations and a range of experimental characterizations confirm the superior structural organization of the zPU matrix, contributing to its outstanding electrochemical performance. The findings strongly suggest that zPU-SPE is a promising candidate for next-generation ASSLBs.

Charge Tethering Drives Intermediate-Range Order and Slow Dynamics in Zwitterionic Liquids

We have synthesized and characterized a family of zwitterionic liquids (ZwLs) based on the poly(ethylene oxide) imidazolium cation and the alkyl sulfonate anion. To better rationalize ZwLs′ structural behavior and networkforming properties, we have computationally studied them in contrast to isostructural but chemically untethered ionic liquid (IL) analogues. Perhaps surprisingly, it is the molecular liquids and not the ILs that show the most selfassembly and intermediate-range order associated with scattering prepeaks; the ZwLs display also the slowest dynamics. This is consistent with prior work showing the importance of networks in considering the viscoelastic relaxation of liquids. We find that, because of their significantly large molecular dipoles, these zwitterions are versatile network-building blocks that result in highly viscous liquids. From a structural perspective, networks in these ZwLs sit somewhere in between what would be true chemical connectivity and the Coulombic networks observed in ionic liquids.

Quantification of zwitterion betaine in betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and its influence on liquid–liquid equilibrium with water

In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed as extractants for separation of metals, including rare earth elements. In particular, protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([HBet][TFSI]) exhibits liquid–liquid phase behavior with water that can be tuned by complexation with various metals. Here we show that previously undetected neutral zwitterionic betaine formed during the IL synthesis can affect the phase behaviour. Traditional synthesis of protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide results in significant amounts of neutral zwitterionic betaine impurity, which dramatically affects phase behavior.

Interaction-based ion selectivity exhibited by self-assembled, cross-linked zwitterionic copolymer membranes

Significance The separation of ions is challenging yet crucial for providing access to safe water resources as well as recovering valuable ions from water and wastewater. Yet, membranes rarely exhibit selectivity between ions of similar charge and size. We demonstrate that membranes, prepared by a fully scalable method that uses self-assembling zwitterionic copolymers, exhibit exceptional selectivity between salt anions of similar size and charge. We show that this unusual capability is derived from selective zwitterion–ion interactions occurring within the nanochannels, similarly to biological ion channels. We further demonstrate these membranes exhibit Cl − /F − permselectivity more than twice the values reported in previous studies, with applications in treating groundwater streams to prevent fluorosis and in wastewater treatment.

Influence of Grafting Density and the Ionic Environment on the Structure of Zwitterionic Brushes

Zwitterionic polymer brushes possess a high potential for applications as surface coatings, e.g., in antifouling applications. Their complex association behavior due to the coexistence of oppositely charged groups on the same monomeric unit allows for a broad variation of polarity, hydrophilicity, and the antipolyelectrolyte effect with the variation of the surrounding environment. In this study, planar polysulfobetaine brushes were investigated with neutron reflectometry (NR) and neutron spin–echo spectroscopy under grazing incidence (GINSES) to explore the brush structure and its inner dynamics perpendicular to the substrate. In particular, the effects of the substrate–initiator system and ionic strength on the structure were investigated with neutron reflectometry and a swelling by a factor of 3–5 was found in the presence of aqueous NaCl and MgCl 2 solutions compared to the dry state. During the data analysis, the applicability of a model-free evaluation was also demonstrated for the investigated polysulfobetaine brushes. Furthermore, it was found with GINSES that in contrast to neutral brushes, these polysulfobetaine brushes do not show the typical concentration fluctuations in the nanosecond time range when partially swollen with salt-free water.
