The possible participation of esters as well as amides in prebiotic polymers.

Demonstration that alpha-hydroxy acids may have participated in the formation of prebiological polymers in a manner similar to the participation of alpha-amino acids. Ex periments are described which indicate that the system for forming peptide bonds in present-day biological organisms is equally competent in forming ester and polyester bonds. In particular, the experiments described are directed toward answering questions regarding the action of peptidyl transferase in ester formation. Also, an attempt is made to determine whether a complete protein synthetic system can operate with transfer RNA molecules which have alpha-hydroxyl acids attached to them instead of alpha-amino acids, using both synthetic and natural mRNA. The ability of ribosomal peptidyl transferase to catalyze the formation of an ester bond as well as its normal product, the peptide bond, is demonstrated.

Photodetachment of electrons from amide and arsenide ions - The electron affinities of NH2., and AsH2.

The relative cross section for the gas-phase photodetachment of electrons has been determined for NH2(-) in the wavelength region of 1195 to 1695 nm and for AsH2(-) in the region from 620 to 1010 nm. An ion cyclotron resonance spectrometer was used to generate, trap, and detect negative ions. A 1000-W xenon arc lamp with a grating monochromator was used as the light source, except for one series of experiments in which a tunable laser was employed. Single sharp thresholds were observed in both cross sections, and the following electron affinity values were determined: 0.744 (plus or minus 0.022) eV for NH2. and 1.27 (plus or minus 0.03) eV for AsH2.

Oxidative peptide /and amide/ formation from Schiff base complexes

One hypothesis of the origin of pre-modern forms of life is that the original replicating molecules were specific polypeptides which acted as templates for the assembly of poly-Schiff bases complementary to the template, and that these polymers were then oxidized to peptide linkages, probably by photo-produced oxidants. A double cycle of such anti-parallel complementary replication would yield the original peptide polymer. If this model were valid, the Schiff base between an N-acyl alpha mino aldehyde and an amino acid should yield a dipeptide in aqueous solution in the presence of an appropriate oxidant. In the present study it is shown that the substituted dipeptide, N-acetyl-tyrosyl-tyrosine, is produced in high yield in aqueous solution at pH 9 through the action of H2O2 on the Schiff-base complex between N-acetyl-tyrosinal and tyrosine and that a great variety of N-acyl amino acids are formed from amino acids and aliphatic aldehydes under similar conditions.

Multiepoch VLBI observations of 4C 39.25 - Superluminal motion amid stationary structure

Eight VLBI maps of the quasar 4C 39.25 are presented, covering the time interval November 1979 to July 1985. During this period the compact components at the eastern and western ends of the source remained roughly stationary with respect to each other. A third component emerged from the western component in 1982 and proceeded to move (relative to the other two components) eastward at a rate of 0.16 + or - 0.02 marcsec per year. This corresponds to an average apparent speed between 3.2c and 8.4c for Hubble's constant between 100 and 50 km/s Mpc and q0 between 1 and 0. This superluminal motion contrasts with the stationary structure observed in the 1970s and also still observed between the eastern and western ends of the source. Possible explanations include superluminal feeding of a stationary compact counterpart to a classical radio lobe, an obstacle in a relativistic jet, a relativistic jet which alternatively expands and contracts owing to gradients in the confining pressure, and gravitational lensing of the compact radio emission.

Simultaneous Detection And Estimation Amid Strong Dynamical Effects

Effective signal-to-noise ratio several decibels greater than in previous schemes. Proposed for digital processing of received noisy, binary-phase-modulated radio signal for simultaneous detection of binary modulation and estimation of Doppler phase, frequency, and frequency derivative. Intended for use where relative motion between transmitter and receiver includes large velocities, strong accelerations, and/or intense jerks, resulting in possibly large Doppler frequency shifts with respect to time. Improves reception in radar, mobile/satellite communications, and navigation systems.

Tracking Steady Light Sources Amid Luminous Transients

The Transient Event Rejection for Acquisition and Tracking (TERAT) algorithm governs operation of image-data-acquisition and -processing system. TERAT processes digitized image data to acquire (that is, identify) candidate steady source of light, validate candidate source, and track validated source, all in presence of real or apparent luminous transients represented in image data. Source of light tracked could be star or distant luminous beacon. Transients caused by impacts of ionizing radiation on imaging array of photodetectors or by unsteady light sources not meant to be tracked. TERAT functions with limited data-processing resources. TERAT algorithm currently operational on NASA's TOPEX mission.

Signal detection amid noise with known statistics

Conventional methods of signal detection are based on the comparison of a local signal-to-noise ratio S/N to some threshold value. We present a new method that compares instead the histogram of the data with the one expected for background noise alone. Signals are detected from discrepancies between the two. We expect it to be applicable in the detection of signals from any data whose background statistics is known. To illustrate the method, we apply it to the case of photon-limited imaging data where the underlying background is Poissonian. Numerical simulations are used to check the efficiency of our method, finding that for signals with low S/N (less than 5), it detects signals with a higher degree of reliability than the conventional method.

Clean Air Slots Amid Dense Atmospheric Pollution in Southern Africa

During the flights of the University of Washington's Convair-580 in the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000) in southern Africa, a phenomenon was observed that has not been reported previously. This was the occurrence of thin layers of remarkably clean air, sandwiched between heavily polluted air, which persisted for many hours during the day. Photographs are shown of these clean air slots (CAS), and particle concentrations and light scattering coefficients in and around such slot are presented. An explanation is proposed for the propensity of CAS to form in southern Africa during the dry season.

Clean Air Slots Amid Atmospheric Pollution

Layering in the Earth's atmosphere is most commonly seen where parts of the atmosphere resist the incursion of air parcels from above and below - for example, when there is an increase in temperature with height over a particular altitude range. Pollutants tend to accumulate underneath the resulting stable layers. which is why visibility often increases markedly above certain altitudes. Here we describe the occurrence of an opposite effect, in which stable layers generate a layer of remarkably clean air (we refer to these layers as clean-air 'slots') sandwiched between layers of polluted air. We have observed clean-air slots in various locations around the world, but they are particularly well defined and prevalent in southern Africa during the dry season August-September). This is because at this time in this region, stable layers are common and pollution from biomass burning is widespread.

Clean Air Slots Amid Atmospheric Pollution

This article investigates the mechanism for those layers in the atmosphere that are free of air borne pollution even though the air above and below them carry pollutants. Atmospheric subsidence is posed as a mechanism for this phenomenon.

Poly-phenylated diamines and their use as polycondensation monomers in the synthesis of polyamide, poly(amide-imide), and polyimide polymers

New polyphenylated polynuclear aromatic diamines, such as 1,3-bis[4-aminophenyl]-2,3,5-triphenylbenzene, a process for their manufacture and their use as polycondensation components for the manufacture of polyamide, polyamide-imide and polyimide polymers are described. The polymers obtained with the aromatic diamines according to the invention are readily soluble, rigid-rod polymers and are distinguished by outstanding modulus, tensile compression strength, energy absorption, coefficient of expansion and electrical properties.

A Measurement of Water Vapour amid a Largely Quiescent Environment on Europa

Previous investigations proved the existence of local density enhancements in Europa’s atmosphere, advancing the idea of a possible origination from water plumes. These measurement strategies, however, were sensitive either to total absorption or atomic emissions, which limited the ability to assess the water content. Here we present direct searches for water vapour on Europa spanning dates from February 2016 to May 2017 with the Keck Observatory. Our global survey at infrared wavelengths resulted in non-detections on 16 out of 17 dates, with upper limits below the water abundances inferred from previous estimates. On one date (26 April 2016) we measured 2,095 ± 658 tonnes of water vapour at Europa’s leading hemisphere. We suggest that the outgassing ls than previously estimated, with only rare localized events of stronger activity.

Preparation and Characterization of Polyimide/Organoclay Nanocomposites

Organically modified montmorrrillonite clay, containing a long chain aliphatic quarternary ammonium cation, was used to prepare polyimide/organoclay hybrids. Several approaches were examined in an attempt to achieve fully exfoliated nanocomposites. These included simple mixing of the clay in a pre-made high molecular weight poly(amide acid) solution; simple mixing followed by sonication of the organoclay/poly(amide acid) solutions; and the preparation of high molecular weight poly(amide acid)s in the presence of the organoclay dispersed in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The best results were obtained using the in-situ polymerization approach. The resulting nanocomposite films (both amide acid and imide), containing 3-8% by weight of organoclay, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thin film tensile properties. A significant degree of dispersion was observed in the nanocomposite films of the amide acid and the imide. After thermal treatment of amide acid films to effect imidization, in both air and nitrogen, the films were visually darker than control films without clay and the level of clay dispersion appeared to have decreased. In the latter case, the separation between the layers of the clay decreased to a spacing less than that present in the original organoclay. These observations suggest that thermal degradation of the aliphatic quarternary ammonium cation occurred likely during thermal treatment to effect imidization and solvent removal. These thermal degradation effects were less pronounced when thermal treatment was performed under nitrogen. The polyimide/organoclay hybrid films exhibited higher room temperature tensile moduli and lower strength and elongation to break than the control films.
